5A New Mexico High School Basketball Week 3 Rankings (December 9)
The top-ranked Volcano Vista Hawks (3-0 overall) are off to a dominant start, continuing their reign as two-time defending state champions. Last week, they posted decisive wins over La Cueva (69-48) and Valley (79-34) to remain at the top of the NMPreps Power 12 Rankings.
Sandia (4-0 overall), ranked No. 2, put together an impressive 3-0 week. The Matadors defeated Atrisco Heritage (69-61) at home before heading south to Las Cruces, where they secured victories over Mayfield (71-49) and Centennial (80-74).
Hobbs (5-0 overall) rounds out the top three after a stellar showing at the Artesia City of Champions Tournament. The Eagles opened their week with a win over Centennial (64-42) before defeating Rio Rancho (68-48), Carlsbad (62-52), and Artesia (81-65) to take the tournament title and remain unbeaten.
Rounding Out the Top Five: Organ Mountain surged to No. 4 this week, climbing from No. 7. The Knights (2-0 overall) started the season strong, edging Del Norte (62-59) and delivering an emphatic upset over Atrisco Heritage (83-61). Cleveland (2-0 overall) holds steady at No. 5 after wins over Los Lunas (72-40) and Clovis (71-69) in a dramatic buzzer-beater finish.
Movement and Shake-Up
Atrisco Heritage (2-2 overall) experienced a significant fall from No. 4 after losses to Sandia (69-61) and Organ Mountain (83-61). Albuquerque and Eldorado swapped spots at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively. Albuquerque beat Eldorado 77-71 last week.
Alamogordo (2-2 overall) dropped out of the rankings entirely after starting the season with narrow wins over Silver (57-51) and Deming (57-48 in overtime), followed by blowout losses to Carlsbad (55-21) and Rio Rancho (65-48).
Santa Fe (3-0 overall) moved up from No. 12 to No. 11 after winning their home Capital City Invite. The Demons defeated Santa Fe Indian (49-47), Los Alamos (63-44), and picked up a resume-boosting overtime victory over Farmington (63-61).
