I do believe we are going to get athletics in the spring. With vaccinations; if we can show decreases in deaths and rates, regardless of raw data we are going to play. It’s not going to look like what we have had in the past but it will be something to build on.
Every decision a human being makes has an alternative that didn’t happen. I can tell you that officials have to consider all alternatives before acting. Long term consequences are something that , unfortunately, very few have taken into consideration.
To my fellow coaches....what are you really willing to give up? Here is a reality you may not have thought of. Are you willing to say let’s just get back to normal! In doing so, are you willing to pay $300 more in health insurance every month for the rest of your career? Are you willing to take a 10% ding on your pay to contribute more to your retirement? Are you willing to have an additional 5-10 years added to your retirement age?
Covid in economic terms is a negative externalitiy. The more people who get sick and the more people who die create what you call deadweight in financial terms. Too much deadweight can cause economic conditions which take years if not decades to correct.
The course of the virus is not sustainable economically. Too many states are looking out for today and neglecting tomorrow. We keep bragging about Texas....they are looking at a reduction in state revenue by 20% two years from now. This will be a result of their Covid response. New Mexico has dodged some major economic deadweight. You may not see it but most of you will benefit as will your children and their potential college funds. When these “bills” come due, states who can claim freedom now will be the first ones to make education cuts and athletic cuts in the future. Their tracks are simply not sustainable. At some point you have to pay.
Me personally....I like to pay now. I don’t like high interest and surprises in the future. Come see me 4 or 5 years from now and brag how good Texas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas are doing. Their teachers won’t be making squat. They will be in completely underfunded schools. Their pensions for teachers, police, and other government employers will be running dry.
It’s the sad reality of where we are.
