Overview

Since taking over in 2012/2013 head coach Travis Julian has not only placed the Los Lunas Tigers on the 5A map, he has them as the contender in waiting each season. The Tigers went 21-10 last season and return one of the teams with the most depth. They return four players ranked in the NMPreps.com Top 100 Players from 2015/2016 in Martin Trujillo, Kayden Walker and Hunter Wisneski along with a sophomore who could be one of the best in Zanen Zeller.

Coming in at number two is the Roswell Coyotes who lost next level talent Daniel Amador (New Mexico Junior College) but return Chris Mesquita and Garrett Smothermon who helped contribute to a 23-6 season in 2015/2016. At number three is the Artesia Bulldogs who are quick to rise in the rankings with the addition of a next level talent in Bryce McAllister who moved from Carlsbad.

Rounding out the top-5 is the 2016 runner up in Capital High School who will hand over the steering wheel to Jeremy Anaya, a point guard that could keep them at the top even with the graduation to Eric Coca (Northern New Mexico College). Grants has plenty of holes to fill but have one of the top guards in Matt Vail that could keep them in the mix, they also lost a college player in Richie Lucero (Fort Lewis College).

Number six comes down from 6A in the Alamogordo Tigers who made a splash of a hire in bringing former Cliff coach Brian Shock to town. The Cliff Cowboys won the past two state championships in 1A basketball and bring a talented roster that underachieved last season. Defending state champ Espanola Valley checks in at 8 with coaching questions, Goddard has only been getting better they check in at 7.
