Preview: The Rockets have won 11 in a row and defeated the Del Norte Knights in two quick games last week to advance to the Class 5A Quarterfinals under Head Coach Alan Edmonson. A loaded roster that everyone in the state tournament is eager to watch takes on the defending state champ Academy. Likely on the mound is Junior Standout Cal Villarreal who is committed to New Mexico State, against Del Norte this past weekend he racked up 10 strikeouts. Derek Farmer had a very impressive series in round throwing out two baserunners from the catcher’s position and racking up 2 RBIs. The defending state champ Academy will likely throw junior pitcher Thomas Braybrooks, one of the most feared pitchers in Class 5A, earlier this year Braybrooks shutout 6A power Eldorado, with the Chargers winning 6-1. The Chargers are 13-14-1 on the year and beat Farmington in 3 games in the first round of play. Jake Wyly homered, Jon Saiz had 3 RBI’s, and Seth Jones earned a save all against the Scorpions.

Other notable players include Elijah Gamboa and Logan Klunder. Artesia is a very dangerous opponent and is the only team in New Mexico to beat both No. 1 seeded Rio Rancho from Class 6A and No. 1 seeded Goddard from Class 5A. Yes, they are that good. They defeated Miyamura in two games last weekend and are led by Cody Fuentes who is batting .415 from the plate with 31 runs scored, Jharyss Granger who is batting .368 with 29 RBI’s, and JR Bustamonte who is just a freshman is 5-2 on the year with two no-hitters.

Preview: The Sundevils continue to power their way through Class 4A now with a record of 24-4 on the season after taking two from NMMI in the opening round. This past weekend Beau Wlliams was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Harris McConnell was 7 for 9 in the series with 7 RBIs, Joe Martinez was 3 for 3 with two doubles, and Mikey Snow had 3 hits. It’s a team loaded with talent from head to toe, big favorite to advance against Silver. The Colts are 18-11 under Claudie Thompson after defeating Ruidoso the No. 8 seed in three games. The Pick: Sandia Prep

No. 4 Taos vs. No. 5 Robertson - May 12th - At Rio Rancho - At 4PM
Preview: The Taos Tigers are 17-10 on the season and will take on district rival Robertson on Thursday at Rio Rancho. The Tigers looked impressive in round one scoring a total of 24 runs against Hatch Valley. This season ironically, it’s Robertson that has had the edge in this series winning 2 out of 3 games. The Cardinals defeated St. Michael’s in two games and now sit with a record of 18-8. For the Cardinals watch for Senior Brandon Trujillo who is a Utility Player and for 1B Francisco Arguello. The Pick: Robertson

No. 3 Hope vs. No. 6 Cobre - May 12th - At Rio Rancho - At 1PM
Preview: The Hope Christian Huskies are 19-8 on the year under Head Coach Glen Copeland after defeating Pojoaque in two games in round one. Taking on Cobre will present a challenge, however Hope is a favorite to at least reach the title game and has the talent edge in this quarterfinal match up. Senior Standout and New Mexico State Commit Joe Standley is batting .614 from the plate with 23 RBIs and a state leading 11 home runs. Ryan Villegas has 27 RBIs, Sophomore Aiden McNichol has 21 RBIs. No. 1 Texico vs. No. 9 Eunice - May 11th - Time 7PM - At Cleveland

Preview: The No. 1 ranked Wolverines now 22-4 on the year blew past No. 16 Tohatchi in the first round of the state tournament winning 13-0. The Wolverines will try to beat Eunice for the fourth time this season, winning earlier match ups: 11-1, 10-0, and 3-1. Watch for Eastern New Mexico Commit Tanner Dickerman, Sophomore Nathan Phipps, and Freshman Dalton Thatcher. Eunice is 8-15 on the year after beating Mesilla Valley in round one last week 6-1. As mentioned Eunice has not beat Texico all season long and will again have their work cut out for them. Watch for Bryce Jenkins who is batting .262 with 16 RBIs and for Freshman Logan Gaskins who is batting .246 with 7 RBIs. The Pick: Texico

No. 4 Estancia vs. No. 5 Laguna Acoma - May 11th - 4PM - At Cleveland
Preview: Estancia scored an unbelievable 20 runs against Navajo Prep last week in the first round. In their last 5 games, they have scored 59 runs (that’s nearly a 12 per game average). Freshman Dusty Oberg is batting .559 from the plate with 33 RBIs, Senior Adam Lujan is batting .445 from the plate with 17 RBIs. It’s likely that everyone is taking Laguna Acoma more serious after they defeated Santa Rosa last week 12-8. The Hawks have won 11 games in a row and have a roster loaded with upper class men, in-fact the Hawks have a combined 12 seniors and juniors on the team. The Hawks have only lost two games all year long, this game is likely going to be much better than people think. The Pick: Estancia

No. 3 Lordsburg vs. No. 6 Pecos - May 11th - 1PM - At Cleveland
Preview: Lordsburg is playing like the Lordsburg we thought they would be in the preseason defeating the Clayton Yellowjackets 13-1 in round one. Johnny Plowman threw a 3-hitter and had 6 strikeouts last week, Greg Cuevas had 2 RBIs, and Jacob Esquivel had two singles, a double, and 4 RBIs. Pecos now 15-10 on the season controlled the entire game against Raton in round one thanks to some wonderful pitching from Arturo Achuleta who had 10 K’s on the mound and also had 2 RBIs at the plate. Very good match up indeed. The Pick: Lordsburg

These two teams met back in late March with Dexter barely pulling out the victory 9-8 in extra innings. The Wildcats are 10-11 and riding a three game winning streak after beating Capitan 20-3 last weekend. Jacob Padilla was hot for Tularosa hitting two singles, a double, and recording 4 RBIs. The Pick: Dexter

No. 3 Floyd vs. No. 6 Magdalena - May 11th - At 10AM - At Rio Rancho
Preview: The Floyd Broncos are riding a 14 game winning streak heading into the playoffs and ended the year beating Gateway 25-2. On the year the Broncos have marquee wins over Dora, Grady, Gateway, and Logan. Magdalena is a dangerous six seed winning their last 10 games in a row and have plenty of experience on this year’s team once again. This match up is the best match up of the 4 taking place on Wednesday. Watch for Junior Lane Lopez who is batting .480 from the plate with 31 runs scored, Senior Matt Martinez who is hitting .379 with 12 RBIs, and Jeremiah Torres who leads the team in RBI’s with 27.
