Week 1: What to Watch Tuesday and Wednesday Night

The 2015-2016 basketball season is underway we take a look at the Tuesday and Wednesday night slate of games across the state of New Mexico.

FIRST HALF OF THE WEEK'S BIG THREE

Border Game: Onate (0-0) vs EP Americas (TX)- The Onate Knights who will be a top ten preseason ranked team hits the scene on Tuesday Night. The Knights who had a stellar off-season will be on the watch for every team in the state. The Knights are highlighted by NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball Candidate Johnny McCants (2016/6'3"/Forward) who is regarded as the top prospect from the 2016 class. Also, the anticipation of Joe Saterfield (a possible transfer from Centennial High School).

Northern Game: No. 20 Capital Jaguars (0-0) vs. Santa Fe Indian (0-0) - It's not going to be the decorated "Big Three" game but this one will provide lots of scoring and one fast, uptempo games. Capital also brings it's own candidate for NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball in Eric Coca (2016/Guard). Santa Fe Indian will also be a team on the rise in 4A basketball. Head Coach Ceci Moses has the Braves running and this could be a game to keep an eye on. No, not ready to call the upset, but we wouldn't be completely shocked if it's close.

We're Intrigued For Some Reason: Santa Teresa (0-0) vs. Alamogordo (0-0) - Neither team is ranked in the Top-25, Santa Teresa came in 47th on our ranking while Alamogordo was spotted at No. 38. The reason we are intrigued with this contest because we know little about the Desert Warriors who are always a well coached team that plays to it's strengths. On the other side it's the introduction of Tom Shields as the head coach of a talented Alamogordo Tigers. Both coaches work the ball around and could be too close to comfort for the 6A Tigers against the 5A Desert Warriors. Expect a game in the 40's to low 50's.

GRINE'S TAKING THESE THREE IN THE BIG THREE

Onate, Capital and Santa Teresa. The Knights of Onate are too talented to not start off with a bang. Capital has a killer duo and Santa Teresa is my upset pick of the three.

Record (0-0)

THREE PLAYERS TO KEEP AN EYE ON

Tomas Cano, Gadsden High School: The guard will be one of the highest ranked Panthers and under the spotlight each week. Had a big 20-point game last week against Centennial.

Johnny McCants, Onate High School: When you are given this much praise, we will all have eyes on each game McCants plays. The last star to nearly win the NMPreps.com Mr. Basketball was runner-up Tim Jacobs (New Mexico Lobos player).

Eric Coca, Capital High School: Coca has been talked up, much like McCants, and now is the time to prove why he should be a NMPreps.com candidate. Each night he will have to live up to the hype and the Jaguars are a state title favorite to most, so now is the time to answer with a bang in week one.
