Matchups To Watch
Battle of the South: Chapter 2
Carlsbad at Hobbs
The last time these two teams met Carlsbad got the edge on Hobbs, but the Lady Eagles are looking to turn that story around tonight. Carlsbad will have their toughest test again as the regular season district title is on the line. A loss and Hobbs will force a one-game playoff for first in district. Regardless of wins and losses these two teams could possibly have the #1 and #2 seed locked up. (Unless of course West Mesa has something to say about that?)
Defending Home
Cleveland at Volcano Vista
The Lady Hawks are in charge of their own fate right now with Rio Rancho dropping one to Cibola. If the Lady Hawks can get the back-to-back wins they'll be in the playoff for first place in district against Rio Rancho. For VV though, these last two teams have been pesky to put away, but with both matchups being played at home, the Lady Hawks should feel confident closing out district. (Home record for VV? 4-2. Only losses to Las Cruces and Cibola)
A Golden Opportunity
Gallup at Kirtland Central
With Bloomfield losing three straight, Kirtland Central finds themselves atop the District 1-5A standings. A win against a tough Gallup team tonight at home seals the regular season district title for the Lady Broncos. This time of season though anything can happen. (Bloomfield needs a win vs. Farmington and a Gallup win to force a playoff for first place)
Chaos on the Horizon?
Roswell at Lovington
Roswell got on the road to Goddard and came up short. Now with the district regular season title in the balance, the Wildcats have a chance to introduce some chaos to 5A. Unfortunately for Lovington they won't be much of a beneficiary of that chaos as point differential shows them well behind that of Goddard and Roswell. Still, who doesn't like some early madness in February?
(Roswell hasn't lost to Lovington since the district tournament championship two years ago)
Playoff Positioning
Las Cruces at Mayfield
For LC, they must WIN OR Lose by 7 OR LESS to secure third place in district. For Mayfield, they must win by 8 OR MORE to secure third place in district. A loss by Mayfield and a Centennial win drops the Lady Trojans to fifth place.
Onate at Centennial
Onate can't better their position with a win, but Centennial has a lot to lose if they don't at least get the win. Although last week's loss to Las Cruces hurt, Centennial can still move up from fifth to fourth with a Las Cruces win over Mayfield. If there's a three-way tie, the Lady Hawks unfortunately come up on the short end due to point differential (-13).
Navajo Prep at Wingate
Navajo Prep has fallen off substantially since winning 9 of their first 12 games. The Lady Eagles have lost 6 of their last 9 games and if they want to improve their playoff position they'll need a 10+ point win against Wingate to push them ahead of the Lady Bears for second place.
Ruidoso at Moriarty
Now this game won't do much for Ruidoso but if there's anyone cheering loud for the Lady Warriors it's Portales. A Moriarty win would lead to a tie between Portales and Moriarty which the Lady Pintos own due to point differential. But a loss to Ruidoso would help the Lady Rams secure second place and a better playoff seed.
Bubble Teams
Aztec at Miyamura
The Lady Patriots are still in a position to move up despite losing their last five games. They can swap places with fifth place Aztec if they can get the win by 3 or more points. A Lady Patriots win could definitely shakeup the 5A double-digit seed projections and doom Aztec's playoff hopes.
Grants at Belen
Both teams have played up and down in district, but Belen still has a chance to swap places with Grants for third place. That kind of move could also cause chaos in the 5A projections but it'll take a 10+ point win by the Lady Eagles to make it a reality.
