NMPreps publisher Joshua Grine highlights the top New Mexico high school basketball games to watch tonight. Stay tuned to NMPreps for in-depth coverage of high school hoops across the state.

Atrisco Heritage (7-2) at Eldorado (3-3), 1 PM

This is a quality Albuquerque matchup, with both teams averaging around 71 points per game and featuring fast-paced, high-tempo offenses. The game carries significant implications for seeding, as both teams could end up on the cusp of earning a top-eight state tournament seed.

Prediction: Atrisco Heritage 75, Eldorado 68

Cleveland (6-0) at Organ Mountain (4-2), 1:30 PM

Cleveland narrowly escaped Las Cruces High last night with a 62-59 win during their two-day trip to southern New Mexico. Now, they face a top-ten-ranked Organ Mountain team eager to bounce back from a two-game losing streak. Expect a tight game that could be decided by late-game offensive execution, as both teams play with similar styles and pacing.

Prediction: Organ Mountain 61, Cleveland 58

Artesia (4-2) at Valley (4-3), 2 PM

This is a fantastic Saturday afternoon matchup for high school basketball fans in New Mexico. Artesia, a preseason favorite to win it all, is still proving their championship potential. Meanwhile, Valley has emerged as a team capable of pulling off surprises, with several impressive wins already under their belt.

Prediction: Artesia 68, Valley 62

Magdalena (8-1) at Texico (7-0), 5:45 PM

Over in eastern New Mexico, fans of small-school basketball are in for a treat. This showdown features the No. 2-ranked team in 1A, Magdalena, against the No. 3-ranked team in 2A, Texico. Both teams are well-coached and boast highly skilled players. In my opinion, this is the must-watch game of the day.

Prediction: Texico 59, Magdalena 54

Tohatchi (8-1) vs. Robertson (6-2), 7:30 PM

In Aztec, the Tohatchi Cougars and Robertson Cardinals face off in the championship game. This matchup offers a glimpse at how Tohatchi stacks up against top-ranked teams in 3A. Both squads have the potential to make deep runs in March, making this an exciting battle.

Prediction: Robertson 64, Tohatchi 58

Santa Fe (5-2) vs. Highland (2-5), 1:15 PM
In Clovis, both teams are aiming to bounce back after tough opening-round losses. Santa Fe (No. 11 in 5A) fell to top-ranked Volcano Vista, 74-40, while Highland (No. 7 in 4A) was defeated by Roswell, 78-51. Both squads need to find offensive consistency, identify a go-to scorer, and cut down on turnovers. This matchup provides an opportunity for each team to reset and build momentum.

Albuquerque (5-1) at Cibola (2-1), 7:00 PM
This under-the-radar matchup is set to be a solid clash on Friday night. Albuquerque (No. 8 in 5A) is off to a strong 5-1 start, continuing the upward trend from last season. Meanwhile, Cibola (5A) appears improved from their struggles last year and is coming off a narrow 73-71 loss to West Mesa. This game serves as a test for both programs and could significantly impact their standings.

West Mesa (5-2) at Del Norte (4-2), 7:00 PM
This intriguing 5A/4A clash features two teams with exciting storylines. West Mesa (5A) boasts a mix of rising young talent, including freshman Daylen Holt, eighth-grader Mikho Huynh, and senior Johnny Young. Del Norte (No. 3 in 4A) counters with Francois Satchivi, who is averaging nearly 13 points per game. Both teams are looking to make a statement in this cross-classification matchup.

Montaño Construction Holiday Tournament

Location: Clovis High School

The Montaño Construction Holiday Tournament kicks off with a stacked lineup of games featuring some of New Mexico's top-ranked teams. Right out of the gate, the tournament delivers a must-see matchup between Santa Fe (No. 11 NMPreps 5A) and Volcano Vista (No. 1 NMPreps 5A) at 4:45 PM. Earlier in the day, at 11:30 AM, Roswell (No. 10 NMPreps 5A) takes on Highland (No. 7 NMPreps 4A) in another marquee matchup.

Other games on tap include Melrose (No. 3 NMPreps 1A) facing Piedra Vista (5A) at 8 AM, followed by host Clovis (5A) squaring off against Miyamura (4A). Clovis clearly stacking the top-half of the bracket.

What to Watch:
  • Roswell vs. Highland:
Roswell enters the tournament at 4-1, fresh off a solid showing at the Phil Griego Tournament, where they went 2-1, with their only loss coming against Cleveland. Led by the trio of Josh Martinez, Rylan Sarracino, and Jaylon Cloud (all Class of 2025), the Coyotes are looking to cement their status as a 5A contender. Highland, at 2-4, is still finding its rhythm after a challenging schedule. The Hornets rely on junior Juan Limas (18.2 ppg) and senior Sebastian Hernandez (11.5 ppg) to lead their offense.
  • Santa Fe vs. Volcano Vista:
This rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal is the headline game of the day. Volcano Vista, powered by stars Kenyon Aguino and David Lunn, comes in undefeated, averaging over 75 points per game. Santa Fe, sitting at 5-2, counters with the talented trio of Christian Herrera, Isaiah Martinez, and Joe Gonzales (all Class of 2025). This game is a true test for both teams as they look to make statements early in the season.
Looking Ahead:
Day two of the tournament could bring a rematch for Santa Fe, facing either Roswell or Highland. The Demons fell to Roswell last week and beat Highland, setting up intriguing possibilities.

Organ Mountain (4-1) at Hobbs (5-1)

Time: 6 PM
Location: Hobbs High School

A top-10 showdown in Class 5A features Hobbs (No. 3 NMPreps 5A) hosting Organ Mountain (No. 7 NMPreps 5A). Hobbs boasts a senior-heavy roster, with Abraham Pena (16.5 ppg) leading the way, supported by Peyton Hodge (10 ppg), Jairus Turrubiates (9.5 ppg), and sophomore Try Hutchings (7 ppg). Organ Mountain is coming off its first loss of the season, a 64-55 defeat against Atrisco Heritage in the Albuquerque Academy Joe Armijo Tournament. The Knights feature a rising core of seniors in Ethan Coomes, Lennis Washington, and Ray Venegas, all of whom have been consistent double-digit scorers this season.
What to Watch: This game pits Hobbs' deep experience and depth against Organ Mountain's rising stars, making for an exciting clash of styles and rosters.

Eldorado (3-2) at West Mesa (4-2)

Time: 7 PM
Location: West Mesa High School

This game has major implications for two Class 5A teams on the bubble of breaking into the NMPreps Top-12 rankings. West Mesa has garnered attention as a dark horse, thanks to a core led by Johnny Young and Estevan Espinosa (both Class of 2025), along with standout underclassmen Mikho Huynh (8th grade) and freshman Daylen Holt. Eldorado counters with senior guard Malachi Green, a 6’1” floor general with a knack for penetrating defenses and creating his own shot.
What to Watch: Both teams have plenty to prove, and this matchup could serve as a turning point for the winner as they seek to solidify their position in the 5A hierarchy.
