2025 Class 3A Baseball Quarterfinal Preview and Predictions
Thursday, May 15 | Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Sports Complex – Albuquerque, NM

After a clean sweep across all four first-round series, the Class 3A baseball bracket heads into Thursday's quarterfinals. From dominant offenses to deep pitching staffs, each of the remaining contenders has a path — but only one will raise the blue trophy in Albuquerque.

Here’s a breakdown of each quarterfinal matchup and score predictions:

#1 New Mexico Military Institute Colts (19-6) vs. #9 Sandia Prep Sundevils (15-12)
Thursday, May 15 – 7:00 p.m.

NMMI dominated the season series against Sandia Prep, winning three games by a combined score of 41-4. The Colts are led by senior duo Tegin Maloney (.517 AVG, 6 HR, 111 K in 59.2 IP) and Javier Yepiz Galindo (.470 AVG, 3 HR, 41 K in 31.2 IP). Grant Maloney (.387 AVG, 24 RBI) adds another strong bat to a lineup that’s racked up 223 runs this season.

Sandia Prep enters with momentum after scoring 38 runs in a two-game sweep of Cobre. Landon Hardcastle (.556 AVG, 7 3B, 2 HR) and Logan Lemons (.519 AVG, 7 3B, 2 HR) are the top offensive threats. The Sundevils will need a hot start to reverse their season struggles against NMMI.

Prediction: NMMI 11, Sandia Prep 4

#2 East Mountain Timberwolves (19-7) vs. #7 Santa Fe Indian Braves (14-10)

Thursday, May 15 – 1:00 p.m.

East Mountain features a potent lineup with top bats including Charles Birdwell (.512 AVG, 15 2B, 4 HR), Rylen Radosevich (.494 AVG, 5 HR), Aidan Madrid (.361 AVG), and Quinlan Gwyther (.390 AVG). On the mound, they are led by Cole Darnell (62 K) and Luke Stoerner (38 K).

Santa Fe Indian swept Hatch Valley in the opening round, highlighted by a 7-0 shutout. Nathaniel Aguilar (.407 AVG, 51 K in 33.2 IP) and Talyn Kewanletzema (.342 AVG, 34 K in 34 IP) do it on both sides of the ball. Kellen Tsosie (.338 AVG, 2 HR) adds pop to a team that has quietly won four of its last five.

Prediction: East Mountain 8, Santa Fe Indian 3

#3 Robertson Cardinals (15-6) vs. #6 Tularosa Wildcats (18-7)

Thursday, May 15 – 10:00 a.m.

This has the feel of the day’s most competitive matchup. Robertson brings a dangerous mix of offense and veteran leadership, featuring Brian Lucero (.509 AVG), Connor Bonney (.472 AVG), and Diego Jaramillo (.371 AVG). On the mound, Bonney leads with 32 strikeouts in 40.2 innings.

Tularosa advanced with wins over Ruidoso, 11-5 and 6-2. The Wildcats are paced by Hunter Sewell (.390 AVG, 29 RBI), Daniel Yuzos (.329 AVG, 57 K), and Ayden Esquero (40 R). Pitching depth also includes Danner Daugherty (57 K) and Adrius Vigil (48 K).

Prediction: Tularosa 5, Robertson 4

#4 St. Michael’s Horsemen (18-8) vs. #5 West Las Vegas Dons(18-7)
Thursday, May 15 – 4:00 p.m.

St. Michael’s won all three games against West Las Vegas during the regular season, with scores of 13-3, 6-4, and 6-1. The Horsemen are led offensively by Michael Giesler (.459 AVG, 38 RBI), Santiago Martinez (.370 AVG), Carson West (.360 AVG, 2 HR), Derick Saiz (.365 AVG), and Aidan Cedillo (.280 AVG). On the mound, Lucas Stoll (48 K) and Carson West (44 K) provide stability.

West Las Vegas swept Navajo Prep 11-0 and 10-0 in the first round. Top performers include Daniel Bustamante (.328 AVG), Jeremiah Ortega (.271 AVG), Ceasar Montoya (.292 AVG), and Estevan Collins (.317 AVG, 4 HR). Pitching includes Xavier Martinez and Collins, both key arms in the series.

Prediction: St. Michael’s 6, West Las Vegas 3

Grine’s Final Thoughts

No surprises in the 3A first round — every team advanced in two-game sweeps. But that leaves us wondering: which top-four seed might struggle after nearly two weeks without live action?

The biggest storyline is St. Michael’s vs. the bye — a familiar hurdle for the Horsemen. Can they keep their edge against a district rival in West Las Vegas, who’s already seen them three times?

NMMI looks like the favorite on paper and has handled Sandia Prep with ease this season — but the Sundevils’ bats are red-hot and could make this interesting if they strike early.

East Mountain and Robertson appear headed for a semifinal showdown, but don’t overlook Santa Fe Indian, who’s played close with multiple top teams this year. And keep an eye on Tularosa — their deep pitching could be the x-factor in this one.

Bottom line: expect close games, maybe a stunner, and plenty of drama. This bracket isn’t done shaking things up yet.

2025 Class 4A Baseball Quarterfinal Preview and Predictions

The 2025 NMAA Class 4A State Baseball Tournament advances to quarterfinal action on Thursday, May 15, at the Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Sports Complex in Albuquerque. After an opening round filled with upsets and close calls, only eight teams remain — and just three of the top five seeds have survived. Here's a breakdown of each matchup and what to expect in the quest for the blue trophy.

#1 Artesia (22-6) vs. #9 Hope Christian (18-10)
Thursday, May 15 – 9:30 a.m.

Top-seeded Artesia looked sharp in a first-round sweep of Bernalillo (5-0, 8-5). The Bulldogs bring a strong balance of pitching and offense, and their defense remains one of the best in Class 4A. Jett Fuentes and Frankie Galindo are swinging hot bats and could be difference-makers in the quarterfinals.

Hope Christian emerged from a gritty series against Valley, winning Games 2 and 3, including a 6-5 nail-biter to advance. Caleb Pena (.390 AVG) leads a resilient Huskies lineup, and their deep pitching rotation has carried them through a tough second half of the season.

Prediction: Artesia 8, Hope Christian 3
Hope will keep it close, but Artesia’s overall depth and postseason polish should push them into the semifinals.

2025 Class 1A Baseball Semifinal Preview

No. 1 Magdalena Steers vs. No. 5 Grady Bronchos
Thursday, May 15 @ 1:00 p.m. | Field 5, Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Sports Complex – Albuquerque, NM

The 2025 New Mexico high school baseball state playoffs roll into the semifinal round this Thursday in Albuquerque, and the top-seeded Magdalena Steers are aiming for a return to the 1A title game as they face off with the surging No. 5 Grady Bronchos. This is a one-game semifinal, and while these teams are no strangers, everything is on the line in this single-elimination showdown.

Season Series: All Magdalena

This will be the fifth meeting between the two teams in 2025, with Magdalena s weeping all previous matchups—3-2, 11-0, 15-2, and 11-0. While the first contest was a nail-biter, the Steers have since outscored Grady 40-2 over the next three games.

No. 1 Magdalena Steers (18-3 overall)

District 1A's dominant force, Magdalena enters the semifinals riding an 11-game win streak. The Steers combine elite pitching, explosive offense, and championship experience winning the title in 2024 and looking to defend their title. They are fueled by one of the deepest lineups in 1A. They’ve scored 262 runs this season while allowing just 57.

Sophomore Josiah Candelaria (.539 AVG, 3 HR, 59 Ks in 42.1 IP) is one of the top two-way players in the state, joined by senior Joseph Zamora (.548 AVG, 5 HR) and senior Ayden Herschbach (.516 AVG). The trio powers an offense batting over .400 as a team with 14 home runs and 180 RBIs.

Magdalena’s pitching has been nearly untouchable, allowing just 27 earned runs across 114.2 innings. If they play clean defense and throw strikes, they’re extremely difficult to beat.

No. 5 Grady Bronchos (10-8 overall)

Grady enters the semifinals as a dangerous underdog with several bats capable of doing damage. Sophomore Andre Garcia (.522 AVG), senior Deakin Ragland (.431 AVG, 3 HR), and sophomore Caden Croy (.429 AVG) have led the way offensively for a team that’s scored 168 runs on the year.

While Grady has enough offensive firepower to hang around, the challenge will be slowing down a Magdalena lineup that has handled their pitching in each previous matchup. Their best shot may be to turn the game into a shootout and hope to capitalize on early momentum.

Prediction:

Magdalena wins, 12-3 – Grady has had a strong season and deserves credit for making a deep run, but the Steers have overwhelmed them in every meeting since March. Expect Magdalena to punch their ticket to the 1A title game behind dominant pitching and big innings from the heart of the order.

No. 2 Gateway Christian Warriors vs. No. 3 Logan Longhorns
Thursday, May 15 @ 4:00 p.m. | Field 5, Jennifer Riordan Spark Kindness Sports Complex – Albuquerque, NM

The second Class 1A semifinal features two talented, evenly matched teams with unfinished business. No. 2 Gateway Christian returns to the semifinals in familiar territory after falling one game short of the title last season. Their opponent, No. 3 Logan, brings a red-hot offense and a veteran core looking to crash the championship picture.

No. 2 Gateway Christian Warriors (14-4)

Undefeated in district play and winners of 12 of their last 13, Gateway Christian enters the semifinals seeking redemption after a 2024 semifinal loss to eventual champ Melrose as the 2-seed. Despite holding the same seed again this year, the Warriors feel more battle-tested and balanced.

Senior Rayford Fulkerson leads the charge both at the plate and on the mound, while junior Jacoby Chavez, freshman Cohen Bolin, sophomore Grady Munson, and senior Ethaniel Wigley round out a strong, versatile group that can hit, pitch, and defend at a high level. The Warriors have scored 240 runs this season and allowed just 91—highlighting their ability to dominate in all phases.

No. 3 Logan Longhorns (11-7 overall)

The Longhorns have averaged over 10 runs per game behind a red-hot lineup led by Aydin Kotara (.517 AVG), Mason Wallin (.439 AVG, 4 HR), and Diego Sanchez (.404 AVG). Five players are batting .367 or better, giving Logan one of the most balanced lineups in 1A.

On the mound, Kotara (48 IP, 75 Ks) and freshman Kale Griffiths (25 IP, 34 Ks) give the Longhorns enough pitching to keep the game competitive—if they can limit Gateway’s big innings early.

This will be Logan’s biggest test to date, but with the way their offense has been performing, they can’t be counted out.

Prediction:

Gateway Christian wins, 9-5 – Logan will keep this game tight early with their dangerous bats, but Gateway’s postseason experience, deeper pitching, and lineup depth should help the Warriors pull away late and return to the 1A title game for the first time since 2021.

New Mexico High School Baseball – 2025 Class 5A 1st Round Preview

The 202 New Mexico high school baseball state tournament starts on Friday, May 9, and Saturday, May 10, with best-of-three first-round series hosted by the top eight seeds in Class 5A. Each matchup opens with Game 1 on Friday, followed by Game 2 on Saturday morning and, if necessary, Game 3 approximately two hours after Game 2. The field is loaded with talent, from perennial powers to dangerous underdogs, as teams chase a coveted spot in the quarterfinals.

No. 1 La Cueva Bears (23-3) vs. No. 16 Las Cruces Bulldawgs (17-9)

Game 1: Friday, May 9 @ 4:00 p.m. | Game 2: Saturday, May 10 @ 11:00 a.m.
Location: La Cueva High School – Albuquerque, NM

Winners of 13 straight and undefeated in District 2-5A play, La Cueva enters the playoffs as the top seed in Class 5A—and with good reason. The Bears are a powerhouse on both sides, outscoring opponents 280-75 this season. Their pitching rotation is as deep as any in the state, led by Luke Feist (2026), Jake Travis (2025), and Dylan Blomker (2026), with all three capable of shutting down even the most potent lineups.

Offensively, the Bears are equally loaded. Senior Braiden Reynolds, the top-ranked player in the state, headlines the lineup along with standout infielder Reid Jacobson (2025). With production throughout the order and one of the strongest defenses in the bracket, La Cueva has all the tools to repeat as state champs—or at least return to the final weekend.

Las Cruces, meanwhile, earned the 16-seed after finishing 8-7 in a competitive District 3-5A. The Bulldawgs have solid pieces, including seniors Xander Parra (.351 AVG, 48.1 IP, 51 Ks) and Bubba Urenda (.298 AVG), along with junior Nick Rojas (.361 AVG). Pitcher Gunnar Guardiola has also been dependable on the mound, giving Las Cruces a chance to stay close in Game 1.

The key for the Bulldawgs will be manufacturing early runs and playing clean defensively. They’ve only allowed 98 runs this season, but La Cueva’s explosive lineup will test that limit immediately.

Prediction: La Cueva wins series 2-0 – The Bears have too much depth, too much power, and too much momentum to be slowed down in the opening round. Las Cruces will compete, but La Cueva should advance comfortably.

No. 2 Rio Rancho Rams (20-6) vs. No. 15 Farmington Scorpions (16-10)

Game 1: Friday, May 9 @ 4:00 p.m. | Game 2: Saturday, May 10 @ 11:00 a.m.
Location: Rio Rancho High School

District 1-5A opponents square off once more after two regular season meetings won by Rio Rancho—10-9 and 6-1. The Rams, winners of the district title, are armed with one of the state’s deepest pitching staffs featuring Adan Bustos (2025), Richard Reiffenberger (2028), and Brandon Segal (2025). Shortstop Wyatt Tinker and rising sophomore Dean Ellison round out a formidable core on both sides of the ball.

Farmington enters with confidence despite being the 15-seed, with solid pitching from Eli Edmiston, Sataurus Griego, and Danny Hagstrom, and strong offensive contributors like Gabe Matamoros, Jorden Pope, and Kobe Benally. Still, the Scorpions will need their best performances of the season to pull off the upset.

Prediction: Rio Rancho wins series 2-0

No. 3 Carlsbad Cavemen (21-5) vs. No. 14 Cibola Cougars (15-11)

Game 1: Friday, May 9 @ 6:00 p.m. | Game 2: Saturday, May 10 @ 10:00 a.m.
Location: Carlsbad High School

Carlsbad, the 4-5A district champion, is loaded with upperclassmen and depth—Aden Quintella, Jonas Molinar, Eloy Lopez, Gus Risher, Jaden Carter, Garrett Fuentes, Connor Robertson, and Rickey Herrera form one of the most complete rosters in the field. The Cavemen are dominant at home and have only allowed 81 runs all season.

Cibola has pop in its lineup, hitting .332 as a team and scoring 199 runs. Jacob Segotta (.400 AVG), Ryan Hutchinson (.395 AVG), and Issac Brito (.338 AVG, 4 HR) are the spark plugs, but they’ll need to break through against Carlsbad’s shutdown arms to stay alive.

Prediction: Carlsbad wins series 2-0

No. 4 Cleveland Storm (18-8) vs. No. 13 Mayfield Trojans (15-10-1)

Game 1: Friday, May 9 @ 4:00 p.m. | Game 2: Saturday, May 10 @ 10:00 a.m.
Location: Cleveland High School

Cleveland’s second-place finish in District 1-5A came in a brutal league, and they enter with a dangerous mix of pitching and defense. Catcher Owen Bishop (2025) anchors a talented core that includes Larry Garcia, Anthony Del Angel, and Caleb Sandoval. Their pitching depth features multiple capable arms including Treven Polanco, Xavier Vasquez, and Jarren Villa.

Mayfield brings momentum after a strong 10-5 finish in District 3-5A. Nolan Matejcek, Fabian Delgado, and Isaac Seidner lead the charge for the Trojans, who will need timely hitting and a clean defensive effort to threaten the Storm.

Prediction: Cleveland wins series 2-1

No. 5 Eldorado Eagles (19-7) vs. No. 12 Organ Mountain Knights (16-9-1)

Game 1: Friday, May 9 @ 4:00 p.m. | Game 2: Saturday, May 10 @ 10:00 a.m.
Location: Eldorado High School

Eldorado has surged into the playoffs with a 7-game winning streak and features one of the most dangerous lineups in Class 5A, batting .371 as a team and scoring 238 runs. Timothy Kamphuis (.500 AVG, 4 HR), Kavan Salas (.405 AVG), and Sullivan Wilson (.380 AVG) headline a deep, veteran squad. Pitching duo Jace Sanchez-Reynolds and Cooper Burak gives them a steady foundation on the mound.

Organ Mountain is not to be underestimated. The Knights hit .337 as a team and have posted 254 hits this year, led by Eric Gomez (.438 AVG), Ryo Rivera, and Devyn Garces. On the mound, Gera Delgado and Brennan McNiece have given Organ Mountain chances to win against strong lineups.

Prediction: Eldorado wins series 2-0 – Organ Mountain will compete, but Eldorado is peaking at the right time and should ride their momentum into the quarterfinals.

No. 6 Sandia Matadors (18-7) vs. No. 11 Piedra Vista Panthers (16-10)

Game 1: Friday, May 9 @ 4:00 p.m. | Game 2: Saturday, May 10 @ 10:00 a.m.
Location: Sandia High School

Sandia enters the tournament on a strong note after a solid third-place finish in District 2-5A. The Matadors are a dangerous offensive team with 260 runs scored this season and are anchored by standout players Adriel Figueroa-Brito, Levi Brooks, and Charles Armijo—all capable of game-changing moments at the plate and on the mound.

Piedra Vista finished fourth in the highly competitive District 1-5A but brings playoff-tested arms in Trapper Paige and JW Bayless, along with a steady bat in Flynn Hoopes. They’ve been up and down but have the tools to pull the upset if they can keep Sandia’s bats in check.

Prediction: Sandia wins series 2-1

No. 7 Centennial Hawks (20-6) vs. No. 10 Rio Grande Ravens (17-9)

Game 1: Friday, May 9 @ 6:00 p.m. | Game 2: Saturday, May 10 @ 10:00 a.m.
Location: Centennial High School

District 3-5A champion Centennial has quietly put together an impressive season, winning 13 of 15 district games and outscoring opponents 189-81. The Hawks are paced by a deep lineup featuring Israel Molina (.427 AVG), Cole Alons (.427 AVG, 7 HR), and Gabriel Torres (.393 AVG). Their rotation, led by Torres, Molina, and senior Aidan Renteria, has compiled 208 strikeouts and just 46 earned runs.

Rio Grande, co-champions of District 5-5A, boasts a potent offense with five regulars batting over .340, led by Jackson Brettelle (.468 AVG), Sebastian Chavez (.441 AVG), and Lluis Salinas (.407 AVG). Their depth at the plate makes them a threat, but their pitching will need to hold up against Centennial’s dangerous order.

Prediction: Centennial wins series 2-0

No. 8 Volcano Vista Hawks (15-11) vs. No. 9 Los Lunas Tigers (16-10)

Game 1: Friday, May 9 @ 4:00 p.m. | Game 2: Saturday, May 10 @ 10:00 a.m.
Location: Volcano Vista High School

In a rematch of a March 22 game won by Volcano Vista 10-5, this 8-9 showdown is one of the most anticipated matchups of the opening round. Volcano Vista, the third-place finisher in District 1-5A, is led by senior Alijah Romero (.432 AVG), sophomore Josiah Gutierrez (.381 AVG), and senior Noah Massey (.387 AVG), who also contributes on the mound. Their offense has been steady, but pitching depth could be tested in a three-game series.

Los Lunas, tied atop District 5-5A, is playing its best baseball down the stretch. Sophomore JJ Utash (.508 AVG, 3 HR), junior Jasiah Byers (.449 AVG), and senior Matthew Castillo (.365 AVG) anchor an explosive lineup that’s posted 177 runs this year. Castillo also leads the staff with a 1.95 ERA and 78 Ks.

Prediction: Volcano Vista wins series 2-1
