Feature Daily Dimes - Friday, December 14

Daily Dimes - Friday, December 14

Three marquee matchups headline tonight's action in New Mexico high school basketball, offering fans a mix of redemption narratives, rising contenders, and potential statement wins.

Atrisco Heritage (5-2) vs. Organ Mountain (4-0), 8:15 PM
The Joe Armijo Tournament at Albuquerque Academy features a highly anticipated rematch between the undefeated Organ Mountain Knights and the Atrisco Heritage Jaguars. Just one week ago, the Knights dismantled the Jaguars 83-61 in a dominant performance. Atrisco Heritage, led by head coach Steve Heredia, will be out for redemption, looking to showcase growth on both ends of the floor. Meanwhile, Organ Mountain, a title contender in 5A, will aim to keep their perfect record intact with their trademark fast-paced offense and stifling defense. Can the Jaguars flip the script this time, or will Organ Mountain prove their dominance once again?

Roswell (3-0) vs. Cleveland (4-0), 4:00 PM
At the Phil Griego Memorial Tournament, two undefeated teams collide as the host Cleveland Storm, ranked in the top three statewide, face a surging Roswell Coyotes squad. Roswell is riding high after a signature upset over ranked Santa Fe last night, and this game could further solidify their status as a team to watch in 5A. Cleveland, known for their balanced scoring and defensive intensity, enters as the favorite but cannot overlook a scrappy Roswell team looking to make yet another statement.

Bosque (4-2) vs. Cobre (5-2), 7:00 PM
At the J May Classic in Tularosa, a compelling 3A matchup unfolds as the Bosque Bobcats face the Cobre Indians. Both teams are seen as potential deep playff team hopefuls, making this an early litmus test for legitimacy. Bosque’s sophomore standout Josiah Wilson (12.7 ppg) will lead the charge against a Cobre team powered by 6-foot-4 junior guard Zavin Guck, who is putting up video game numbers with 25.2 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game. This game could provide clarity on whether either team is ready to elevate from contender to serious threat in 3A.

NMPreps Spring Showcase

In late May/Early June, I’d like to organize a regional showcase, similar to what we do nationally at Rivals and Yahoo Sports. If you’ve seen my videos from the Five Star Event in Florida this summer, this idea builds on that concept.

The plan is to create regional showcases—Southeast, South Central, Northwest, and North Central—to spotlight top players. The event would culminate in an NMPreps/Rivals Top 100 All-Star Event

My primary goals are to:
  1. Raise money for a scholarship fund.
  2. Cover costs for game workers.
  3. Minimize expenses for athletes and their families. Sponsors involved and we can get them there with little cost.
I’d like input on the following:

  • Schools/Coaches: Which schools and coaches would be interested in participating or helping organize?
  • Activities: Should we include 7-on-7 or 8-on-8 games? What specific drills and workouts would best highlight the players’ skills?

Ultimately, my goal is to showcase more New Mexico athletes and help them gain exposure on the national stage. Seeing the top-ranked players at national combines and camps last summer was incredible, but I’d love to see more New Mexico players earning spots at those events.

Thoughts?

Feature Week 3 Daily Dimes - Thursday, December 12

Week 3: Daily Dimes - Thursday, December 12

Another exciting slate of regular-season tournaments is underway across New Mexico. Here’s a breakdown of the day’s matchups, including score predictions and favorite lines.

Las Cruces (1-2) at Atrisco Heritage (3-2), 11:30 AM

Atrisco Heritage looks to build on its strong start against a rebuilding Las Cruces team. The Jaguars are led by an offense capable of big runs, while the Bulldawgs are searching for consistency. Las Cruces will need to control the tempo and limit Atrisco’s transition game to stay competitive.
  • Favorite: Atrisco Heritage, -8.5
  • Prediction: Atrisco Heritage 68, Las Cruces 55

Highland (1-2) at Santa Fe (3-1), 4 PM

This matchup serves as a significant measuring stick for both teams. Highland is led by Juan Lunas, who averages 20.7 points per game, but they’ll face a Santa Fe team with momentum after a strong start to the season. Expect a hard-fought game as both teams vie for an important early-season win.
  • Favorite: Santa Fe, -3.5
  • Prediction: Santa Fe 62, Highland 58

La Cueva (0-3) at Organ Mountain (2-0), 8:15 PM

Organ Mountain looks like a title contender early in the season, while La Cueva struggles to find its footing. Tony Trujillo (11.3 ppg) has been a bright spot for the Bears, but they’ll have their hands full against an Organ Mountain team firing on all cylinders.
  • Favorite: Organ Mountain, -12.5
  • Prediction: Organ Mountain 75, La Cueva 54

Mayfield (2-2) at Albuquerque (2-1), 4:30 PM

This matchup pits a Mayfield team on the bubble against an Albuquerque program that could emerge as a 5A sleeper. Both teams are seeking momentum as they aim to solidify their identities in the early season.
  • Favorite: Albuquerque, -6.5
  • Prediction: Albuquerque 64, Mayfield 57

Gallup (2-2) at Grants (3-1), 7 PM

This Northwest rivalry game has bragging rights on the line along Route 66. Grants is coming off its first loss of the season, while Gallup impressed with a recent win over Arizona's Window Rock. Both teams have strong fan bases and will bring high energy to this matchup.
  • Favorite: Grants, -4.5
  • Prediction: Grants 70, Gallup 65

Belen (3-2) at Goddard (2-0), 6 PM

Belen is starting to look like a 4A player but Goddard’s 2-0 start suggests they could be one of the most improved teams in the state. This game will be a key test for both programs as they seek to establish themselves as playoff threats.
  • Favorite: Goddard, -5.5
  • Prediction: Goddard 61, Belen 56

Valley (1-2) vs. Roswell (1-0), 2 PM

Valley’s Luciano Mondragon (12.3 ppg) leads his team into a neutral-site matchup against Roswell. Both teams are still finding their rhythm, and this game could provide clarity on where they stand heading into the middle of the season.
  • Favorite: Roswell, -2.5
  • Prediction: Roswell 59, Valley 55

Feature Is This the Final Season for Women’s Head Coach Michael Bradbury?

Is This the Final Season for Women’s Head Coach Michael Bradbury?
J Grine -- NMPreps Lobo

Michael Bradbury’s tenure as the head coach of the UNM women’s basketball team has been filled with highs and lows, leaving fans wondering: has he reached his ceiling? While Bradbury has brought some stability to the program, questions linger about whether his teams have underachieved or simply met expectations.

The Lobos have had seasons of promise derailed by inconsistent three-point shooting, struggles with offensive execution, and poor in-game adjustments. These issues have cast doubt on whether Bradbury is the right person to elevate the program to the next level.

On one hand, he has stayed out of controversy, avoided major scandals, and maintained a respectable, if not spectacular, program. For some, that stability might be enough for a program like UNM. On the other hand, the lack of player development and failure to consistently contend at the highest levels of the Mountain West have led others to call for new leadership.

One bright spot has been his recruiting—Bradbury has done a solid job bringing in local talent. However, the lack of growth and progression among players under his coaching has left many questioning the overall direction of the program.

So, is it time for a change? Should UNM embrace new leadership in hopes of taking the next step, or is Bradbury’s steadiness and mediocrity acceptable for the women’s program? What are your thoughts?

Dear NMAA

To whom it may concern,

On this glorious state championship Saturday, 30 minutes prior to kickoff, I’m enjoying black screen. How in the world is there no pregame, coaches interviews, insight through the season etc..? Once again, if KSVP was in charge of this, they would have been on air an hour before kickoff with in person pre recorded coaches interviews, sideline reporting and season stats for both teams.
With all do respect so better for your schools, fans and most importantly the kids.
Sincerely,
Tired of proview and NFHS network
