Questions for Week 13

Most likely to be a blowout this weekend?

Most likely to go into overtime?

Most likely to rush for over 150-yards?

Hot Chocolate or Coffee on Friday night?

Would you rather sleep in your own bed, leave at 9/10 am, travel 5 hours and play on a Friday night. Or sleep in a hotel, four to a room still(?), and play the next mid-day game? (reference to Volcano Vista playing on Friday night in Hobbs).

2022 8-Man State Championship Preview: Lordsburg vs Fort Sumner/House

The 2022 New Mexico high school football state preview for 8-man football. NMPreps rundown of key players to watch, predictions, and more. #nmpreps

NO. 1 LORDSBURG MAVERICKS vs NO. 2 FORT SUMNER/HOUSE FOXES

Saturday, November 12th (1:00 p.m.)

Both teams enter the state championship with a perfect 10-0 record and to complete a perfect season. Fort Sumner/House, the 2-seed, last won a title game in 2017 with a (55-7) win over Escalante. Lordsburg, the year before in 2016, defeated Fort Sumner/House 34-26 under former head coach Louie Baisa.

Fort Sumner's road to the title game came with a 50-0 win over Clayton in the opening round followed with a 38-14 win last week in the semifinals against Melrose. Head coach Brad Holland features a talented roster led behind a junior quarterback by the name of Joaquin Segura. Also, featured on this star studded roster are seniors Clay Norman (WR) and Saul Marquez (RB) who are key prospects on this roster. On defense it is hard hitting Junior Vigil a junior linebacker that anchors this defense.

The top ranked Lordsburg Mavericks enter the state championship after defeating Menaul (50-0) and Magdalena (68-20). Looking unstoppable under head coach Dale Hooper the Mavericks have outscored opponents 536-139 with four shutouts this season. It's the passing attack for the Mavericks this season and they have a stud in senior quarterback Jeremy Valdez who has thrown for over 2,500 yards and 26 touchdowns. Valdez has four targets -- Roman Murrillo (2023), Jonothan Vera (2023), Ariel Jacquez (2023), and Roman Ochoa (2024) -- all with over 400 yards receiving. Murillo leads the way with 947 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Both teams offer plenty of all-state level talent and this one has the potential of becoming a classic.

NMPreps Prediction: Lordsburg 46, Fort Sumner/House 44 (Lorsburg -2)
Over/Under: 83

NO. 1 GATEWAY CHRISTIAN VS. NO. 2 MOUNTAINAIR

2022 New Mexico High School Football State Championship

Friday, November 11th | 7:00 p.m.

Returning for the second year in a row the 10-0 Gateway Christian Warriors look to repeat as 6-man state champions. The Warriors are currently riding a 20-game win streak dating back to last season. The Mountainair Mustangs enter the title game with an 11-0 record outscoring their opponents 683 to 184 this season.

The Mustangs returned a talented roster this season and will continue to look to Ohmani Nieto (2025), Santiago Roybal (2023), and Jake Zamora (2023). The trio will be key players on both sides of the ball. Can they move the ball on a strong GW defense will be the factor.

Top-ranked Gateway Christian have the the best defense in 6-man football with the likes of Ethaniel Wigley (LB), Hayden Wigley (DE), and Jace Worley (DB), all three of which are standouts on offensive as well. Who plays quarterback could play a factor.

NMPreps Prediction: Gateway Christian 48, Mountainair 44
Line: Gateway Christian, -4.5
Grine: Gateway Christian may have to weapons and should outlast a very talented Mountainair team. Over/under, if we placed one, would be around 95 for this one.

Play for OT or The Win (recap Carlsbad and Farmington)

With a 1:30 left in the fourth quarter Carlsbad (on the road) Scored on Farmington to make it 34-33 (Farmington leading). Await the PAT.

Would you kick the extra point to tie and play for overtime? Or would you go for two and the potential win?

A little more info….Carlsbad had made a 24yd FG earlier in the second half of the game. Carlsbad was running to the ball very well. Farmington was throwing the ball very well. Good battle between the teams.

Today. Carlsbad attempted the two point conversion on an off tackle run and was stopped at the one yard line. Farmington ran out the clock.

Provide us with your thoughts on the scenario. Thanks.

Week 12: Saturday Storylines, Picks, and Predictions

In 6A football we start the day with the 10-seed Carlsbad Cavemen and running back Eli Asay making a road tip to take on the 7-seed Farmington Scorpions. Isaac Foutz, a 6-foot MLB leads this Scorpions defense as they look to stop any upset. In the 8-9 game it's a rematch from a Cibola win but the 9-seed Los Lunas Tigers and senior quarterback Paul Cieremans should roll by two touchdowns.

Prediction: Farmington 22, Carlsbad 20 (Farmington, -1.5).
Prediction: Los Lunas 28, Cibola 10 (Los Lunas -14.5)

5A football will feature a team winning their first playoff game in years. Los Alamos and Gadsden could bring a playoff winner for the first time in (insert a long time ago here). The clock should be moving with two solid runners in Tomas Herrera a senior quarterback for Gadsden and Teke Nieto running the ball for Los Alamos. Caden Jojola (RB) and Julian Butivich (QB) lead Valley into the playoff against a surging Miyamura Patriots team thriving under new leadership.

Prediction: Los Alamos 27, Gadsden 26 (Los Alamos, -2)
Prediction: Valley 26, Miyamura 21 (Valley, -5.5)

3A football have shifted things to Saturday football with three games taking place. Thoreau outplayed any prediction on their way to a 5-seed and district championship, they host 12-seed Hope Christian. Raton (6) welcome the 11-seed Hatch Valley Bears in a battle of running back powers. Dexter and Cobre is a SE vs SW match up that could have all the attention in what seems to be a close matchup.

Prediction: Hope Christian 32, Thoreau 12 (Hope Christian, -19.5)
Prediction: Raton 26, Hatch Valley 24 (Raton, -2.5)
Prediction: Dexter 18, Cobre 14 (Dexter, -3.5)

The final game of the day takes us to the undefeated Jal Panthers staying perfect against 8-seed Escalante. Former Escalante Lobos coach is now the lead man of the 1-seed Jal Panthers.

Prediction: Jal 50, Escalante 0 (Jal -50)

Week 12: Friday Night Preview & Predictions

NMPreps Friday night guide to New Mexico high school football playoffs. The first week of November starts the 2022 New Mexico high school football state playoffs. #nmpreps

6A FOOTBALL

No. 5 Volcano Vista Hawks (8-2) vs No. 12 Atrisco Heritage Jaguars (5-5)

Friday, November 4th (7pm)

Over at Community Stadium the Volcano Vista Hawks look to make their make way the 12-seed Jaguars in consecutive weeks. The District 1-6A members faced each other last week in a 50-0 thumping by the Volcano Vista Hawks. It should not take away the improvements by the Atrisco Heritage Jaguars program. A big kudos to the committee that hired Howard Knezevich two years ago and creating the Jaguars into a winner. Stars Latavious Morris (2025), Marquise Renfro (2024) and Manny Sedillo (2023) will look to guide a talented receiving core. The trio totaling for over 2,300 receiving yards and 26 receiving touchdowns on the season.

With their eyes set on a state championship will be the 5th seed Volcano Vista Hawks led by senior quarterback Elliot Pasket-Bell guiding the offense. Pasket-Bell has 2,500 passing yards and 750 rushing yards on the season along with 37 total touchdowns (26 passing). Another outstanding prospect is Tristan Cordova who has 1,000 yards receiving and 9 receiving touchdowns on the season. Will this be a year that Volcano Vista gets it done in the post season?

Prediction: Volcano Vista 48, Atrisco Heritage 8. Volcano Vista sets its sight on the Hobbs Eagles in the quarterfinals.

No. 6 Rio Rancho Rams (6-4) vs No. 11 Alamogordo Tigers (5-5)

Friday, November 4th (7pm)

After facing district leaders Volcano Vista (34-22) and Cleveland (35-14) the Rio Rancho Rams are looking to use the opening round as a potential bounce back game. The offense for the Rams relies on the shoulders of sophomore quarterback JJ Arellano who has over 1,000-yards throwing but it is the rushing the attack that propels the Rams offense. Arellano leads the way with 602 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Rayce Ramirez (2024) is another impactful running back with nearly 600 rushing yards.

Alamogordo earned a crucial win during the final weekend beating Organ Mountain (7-3) and ultimately punching their ticket to the 2022 playoffs. A remarkable turnaround for head coach AJ Cisco guiding the Tigers back to post season play. Ryan Stovall (2023) and Damon Mayberry (2023) steer the rushing attack for the Tigers with the two backs sharing carries and combining for over 1,000 rushing yards on the season. The duo also leads on the other side of the ball leading the team in total tackles.

Prediction: Rio Rancho 31, Alamogordo 18. I like Alamogordo and the work done this season but Rio Rancho should outlast the Tigers.

5A FOOTBALL

No. 5 Deming Wildcats (6-4) vs No. 12 Belen Eagles (2-8)

Friday, November 4th (7pm)

A rematch from the 2021 first round puts the Belen Eagles making the road trip this season to the southwest corner of the state. Deming earned an automatic bid as district champions and winners of five of the final six games of the season to finish 6-4. Deming and Belen met earlier this season, Deming winning 56-22 in Belen back in September. Belen junior running back Diego Avila has nearly 800 yards rushing, with nearly 450 coming in October, will look to guide them in an upset opportunity.

Prediction: Deming 40, Belen 21. Deming should move along and avenge the loss in the playoffs in 2021.

No. 6 Mayfield Trojans (4-6) vs No. 11 Santa Teresa Desert Warriors (4-6)

Friday, November 4th (7pm)

Another rematch game will take place on Friday night with Mayfield looking to make it two in a row against Santa Teresa. The Trojans won 24-7 on the road to start the season but enter the game on a three game skid -- all three to teams ranked in the top four. Seniors Diego Geurra, Jisiah Lara, and Anthony Carrillo look to carry the Trojans this post season. Santa Teresa will look to senior running back Angel Gutierrez in this game. The senior has rushed for 1,003 yards and 12 touchdowns providing the spark to the offense.

Prediction: Mayfield 23, Santa Teresa 14. The Trojans have enough fire power to make a post season run and it starts here.

4A FOOTBALL

No. 5 Portales Rams (8-2) vs No. 12 St. Pius X Sartans (2-8)

Friday, November 4th (7pm)

The game on the move. First, slated to be played at Eastern New Mexico University has now shifted to Clovis High School due to a water issue. The two teams met mid-September in Albuquerque with the Rams coming out ahead 32-0. The story should end the same as the first time around with the play of Paxton Culpepper (2025) and company guiding the Rams into a quarterfinal showdown with Lovington. Culpepper is nearing 2,000-yards passing and 22-touchdowns. Prediction and Pick Here.

No. 6 Albuquerque Academy Chargers (6-4) vs No. 11 Bernalillo Spartans (2-7)

Friday, November 4th (3pm)

The team that could have been. That will be one to remember for the Albuquerque Academy Chargers who have been hit with devastating injuries. Senior quarterback Andres Rivera (2023) will look to improve in the rematch. Rivera passed for 121 yards but threw two INTs in the overtime win last week. Bernalillo enters the game with plenty of confidence after taking the Chargers to the wire. Prediction and Pick Here.

No. 7 Moriarty Pintos (7-3) vs No. 10 Kirtland Central Broncos (4-5)

Friday, November 4th (6pm)

Battle of the horses. This one will belong to the strong running game from the Pintos backfield. Santiago Chavez (2024), Michael Magoffe (2023), and Matthew Romero (2023) have carried the Pintos forward this season. Chavez leads the way with 812 yards (6.1 average per carry) and 8 touchdowns. Junior quarterback Amare Gonzales has 367 rushing yards and 397 passing yards for the Pintos with a total of 17 touchdowns (11 rushing). Kirtland has relied on Randon Matthews (2025) this season and will continue into the state playoffs. Pintos roll. Matthews has 600-passing yards and 600 rushing yards.

No. 8 Aztec Tigers (4-6) vs No. 9 Valencia Jaguars (4-6)

Friday, November 4th (6pm)

Battle of the cats. Valencia playing improved football as of late will look to the guidance of senior quarterback Rey Garcia. Garcia has over 700 yards passing and nearly 500 yards rushing for the Jaguars this season. Macquis Henry looks to guide the Aztec Tigers offense, as he has done all season long. He has over 1,000-yards passing and 10 passing touchdowns on the season. This will be a battle to the end and the final drive could be the determining factor. Expect a cold night in northern New Mexico. Prediction and Pick Here.
