Best/Worst Case Scenario: Alamogordo Tigers

The 2022 New Mexico High School football schedules are being released. NMPreps.com will start to release our best and worst case scenarios to each schedule.

SCHEDULE PREDICTIONS

Best Case Scenario: 4-6 overall.
The high end of the best case scenario could have the Alamogordo Tigers winning the games that they are favored along with some of the coin flip or underdog games. The move up in classification from 5A will hurt this program especially when you look at their new district - Las Cruces, Hobbs, Organ Mountain, Carlsbad, and Centennial.

Worst Case Scenario: 3-7 overall. Three games against Valencia, Capital, and Gadsden help balance out a difficult slate when we hit the late September/October portion of the schedule.

Over/Under: 3.5 (vote here)

Preseason Picks
Favored: Valencia, Capital, Gadsden

ALAMOGORDO TIGERS (2-8 overall, 0-3): The Tigers have their teeth cut out for them moving back into 6A football from 5A. The defense returns some experience as they look to be a dark horse to finish in the top three - Damon Mayberry (2023) and Ryan Stovall (2023) are the first names on that defense that come to mind.

CARLSBAD CAVEMEN (3-7 overall, 1-3): After a 2-1 start the Cavemen only find a single win the rest of the way. Usher in new head coach Oliver Soukup, the former New Mexico State University Aggie assistant coach, and the Cavemen hope to make their way back into playoff contention.

CENTENNIAL HAWKS (8-2 overall, 4-0): Perhaps one of the more consistent programs in 6A football as head coach Aaron Ocampo has created a winning program. Check out 2023 prospects Devyn Woods and Izaiah Gonzales on defense this season.

HOBBS EAGLES (6-6 overall, 2-2): The Eagles suffer the loss of their quarterback from last season; Colton Graham threw for over 2,200 yards. However, coming off a state playoff win in 2021 and a duo of Kaden Trevino and Ethan Vanlandingham could have them flirting with the top three spots in this district again, maybe more.

LAS CRUCES BULDAWGS (7-5 overall, 3-1): Las Cruces didn't win the district last season but a couple of playoff wins and semifinals appearance deemed the season a huge success. Zayke Hawkins (2024/WR) and Siddeeq Shabazz (2023/S) are a couple early names for the Dawgs.

ORGAN MOUNTAIN KNIGHTS (4-6 overall, 0-4): The Knights are no longer at the bottom of the classification and this season they hope to continue improving this program that sat in the cellar for a few years. They graduated some key pieces and will look to RB Joe Estrada (2023).

DISTRICT 2-6A

Eldorado Eagles (7-4 overall, 4-1 district)

Eldorado has pieces to replace but look to prospect Matthew Pacheco (2023) to guide them into 2022 on both sides of the ball.

Farmington Scorpions (11-1 overall, 4-0 district)**
The Scorpions move up from 5A to 6A for this two-year block and they could be in for a rebuild after taking a hit to graduation.

La Cueva Bears (10-2 overall, 6-0 district)
La Cueva is absolutely loaded this season and not only a favorite to win the district but the state championship behind the likes of Ayers, Buie, Mangino, and Armenta -- all DI caliber players.

Sandia Matadors (5-5 overall, 4-1 district)
The district has some RB's to watch this season and the Matadors feature Malachi Thymes (2023) who will do battle with the best of them.

West Mesa Mustangs (3-6 overall, 1-3 district)
The Mustangs have an uphill battle and new head coach Landrick Brody has his work cut out for him as he takes a team from the cellar of the district. The good news is one of the top prospects in the 2024 class will be a Mustangs - Elijah Brody (ATH)

ALBUQUERQUE BULLDOGS

BEST CASE SCENARIO
: 6-4 overall. In the best case scenario the Bulldogs have the opportunity at a .500 season. Now that scheduling is in the favor of the schools in APS, they are allowed to put their programs in the best situation. Here is what we have: Organ Mountain, West Mesa, Farmington, Capital, Santa Fe, and Manzano are all games in the favorite or coin flip section. Sticking true to the feature, the best case scenario would be winning all of these games.

WORST CASE SCENARIO: 2-8 overall. Capital and Manzano are both games that the Bulldogs are favored in this preseason.

District Predictions: Who wins District 2-3A

Raton Tigers (2021 Records: 11-1 overall, 4-0 district):
The Tigers went 11-0 last season before falling in the playoffs. They do graduate a pair of studs but welcome back a wealth of talent from last season. Look for Cayden Walton (2023) to have another stellar season after rushing for nearly 2,000 yards as a junior.

Robertson Cardinals (2021 Records: 11-2 overall, 3-1 district): The reigning state champions will look to continue their winning ways as they head into the 2022 season. Losing an all-time top athlete in Matthew Gonzales hurts and they will have to fill that void. Jesse James Gonzalez (2025/RB) and Mateo Contreras (2023/WR) will look to carry them forward. Bodie Schlinger (2023) on defense will be a candidate for defender of the year.

Santa Fe Indian Braves (2021 Records: 5-5 overall, 0-4 district): The Braves went 5-0 before having to play in this difficult district. They'll return plenty but all-star game player Morningdove will be one to replace. Taylor Torivio (2024/RB) will provide a spark out of the backfield.

St. Michael's Horsemen (2021 Records: 9-4 overall, 2-2 district): The Horsemen played for the state championship last season and their eyes are on a return. The Horsemen return players Zach Martinez (2023/QB), Gage Bass (2023/DE), and Creed Chavez (2023/DB) to help in their quest for another state championship run.

West Las Vegas Dons (2021 Records: 8-4 overall, 1-3 district): The Dons went 5-0 to the start the season and finished with 8 overall wins that included a playoff win. Gone is next level running back Damian Gallegos but the Dons have excitement surrounding 2025 quarterback CJ Perea who threw for 2229 yards as a freshman.
