Way-Too-Early Rankings: Hobbs Eagles

Class: 6A | Record: 2-3 overall; Won Bowl Game, 47-0 vs Onate
Head Coach: Ken Stevens (3rd Season at Hobbs; 4-11 at Hobbs)
Key Returning Player on Offense: Colton Graham (2022/QB)
Key Returning Player on Defense: Aldo Argott (2022/LB)

Spring Preview

The Eagles bring back quarterback Colton Graham and enough talent to rank in the NMPreps New Mexico Top 20 this preseason. The Eagles won their final two games last season over Artesia (56-27) and Onate (47-0). Looking at the losses last season, a four-point loss to Clovis, a three-point loss to Lovington, and a six-point loss to Carlsbad could just mean they had a slow start. On a regular season, they could have pulled off 6 or 7 wins after that slow start. I feel they are on the brink of a playoff run season and 2021 could be that season.

Things that worked for me with this state tournament

1) Four games on championship Saturday. I loved hoops all day as the next guy but I loved seeing the teams getting to celebrate with the fans and their team. Plus you left wanting more hoops. I am truly back-and-forth about this next comment that I'll make but I think moving forward only the Final Four make the PIT. (If it's about money and cost).

1a) First Week:
First Round (of 16) - Neutral Site - (Friday Night)
Quarterfinals (8) - Neutral Site (Saturday Night)
Neutral Sites - Rio Rancho Star Center, NMHU, ENMU, WNMU, Pan Am, Tasker, Shiprock, KC, any HS really.

Final Four (4) - The PIT (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)
6A-5A (Tuesday) 4 Games (B/G) - Tuesday & Saturday because most come from the metro area and the complaints about not sleeping in bed.
4A-3A (Wed) 4 Games (B/G) - In the middle.
1A-2A (Thurs) 4 Games (B/G) - Less travel and staying the night for our smaller communities

Friday - Girls Championships - 1A - 6A
Saturday - Boys Championships 1A - 6A

Example - 6A Boys - 4 Districts (Regionally at best) - Yes, Hoops should be 6A too and I hope the NMAA does that at the next alignment voting for 2022/2023. Not because we are that big but the enrollment range is wide enough to need.

South Region
District Champ Auto - #1 Las Cruces vs #16 Albuquerque; #8 Santa Fe vs #9 Alamogordo
--Games will take place at Pan Am (if no Aggie games); Alternative Tasker
--Round of 16 - Friday Night/Quarterfinal - Saturday Night

Southeast Region
District Champ Auto - # 4 Roswell vs #13 Centennial; #5 Los Lunas vs #12 Hobbs
--Games will take place at ENMU

North Region
District Champ Auto - #2 Cleveland vs #15 Capital; #7 Carlsbad vs #10 La Cueva
--Games will take place at Santa Ana Star Center

Northwest Region
District Champ Auto - #3 Sandia vs #14 Volcano Vista; #6 Atrisco Heritage vs #11 Manzano
--Games will take place at Bernalillo HS

District Champs are seeded 1-4 * Not totally sold this idea but it's out there.
Seeds 5-16 are at large and don't matter which position in the district you finished.

***NOT SOLD ON THIS ABOVE, I GOT OFF TRACK. I Will come back to this thought later today. A lot of basketball. Have a great Sunday, go to church with your mom, and have a great Mother's Day. Moms are the absolute best.

What I liked this week
Neutral First Round Games
Only Four Games at the PIT (6 would be okay)
Think outside the box a little, change is good sometimes.

Happy Mother's Day!

Moms, you truly are the best. Mine is one helluva lady that gave me more than I deserve even when times were truly rough. My grandma was too!

Thank you, Mom's out there!

**I'm likely signing off for the day (I rarely say that on here as it's 365/24/7). Congrats to the state champs. Loved seeing friends I grew up win titles yesterday and friends I gained along the way and with a mentor finally getting one.

Third Time’s the Charm as Cleveland Captures Elusive Blue Trophy

For seven straight seasons, including this one the Cleveland Storm (14-1) advanced to at least the Final Four and twice made the title game, losing in 2015 to Hobbs and in 2018 to Atrisco Heritage. Well, after knocking and knocking, and then knocking some more the Storm finally kicked down the door and won their first boys basketball championship. The Storm defeated Las Cruces (14-1) 55-49 in “The Pit” and denied the Bulldawgs a repeat and tenth overall title...continue here.

Knights Win First Title in Program History

The top-seeded Del Norte Knights came into this afternoon's contest riding a 10-game winning streak while the second-seeded Artesia Bulldogs were on an eight-game win streak. The Bulldogs scored the game's first four points, but from there they would struggle mightily from the field...continue here.

Hot Springs Tigers Win

The Hot Springs Tigers have clawed and climbed their way back to the top of the 3A boys basketball mountain. After coming up a game short last year, losing to eventual champion Bosque 67-53 in the Final Four, Head Coach Derek Bean and his Tigers would not be denied this year. "It was something that stayed in our bellies, there was a bad taste in our mouth. We knew we didn't play well obviously and they [Bosque] played well and were a great team that went on to win state. But, it didn't sit well and we had a chip on our shoulder all season," Coach Bean commented afterward...continue here.

Down But Not Out, Lynx Rally for Title

For Rehoboth, the wait has been 44 years, for Head Coach Kevin Zwiers the wait was 17 years, but now the waiting is over and they are state champs. The Lynx won their first state championship in 1977 following a 55-50 win over Jal. Afterward, Coach Zwiers said, "This is year seventeen now and when we took over we said we wanted to get back here, it's taken a lot longer to get here than we probably thought but we are here. Shoutout to all the guys who played before, we're standing on their shoulders here, they stuck with us through the lean years."..continue here.
