Saturday Coffee: Week 10 Storylines

Saturday Coffee: Week 10 Storylines

Not much changed on Friday night but teams are starting to take their seat at the playoff table. We did see some teams that have likely been placed on the elimination table and this morning with Saturday morning coffee we try to recap all of the happenings from last night.

District Championship Games Set: Los Lunas blanked Del Norte in one quarter (57-0) and Belen took out Highland 62-14 setting up a noon DC in Los Lunas for the Valencia County squads. Rio Rancho mercy ruled Volcano Vista, 57-7 and Cleveland shutout West Mesa, 54-0, setting up an all Rio Rancho district championship next weekend.

Upsets: Robertson beat St. Michael's 44-7, and yes we are all aware of how many players were out for St. Michael's but this loss shakes up the order in which teams will take a seat at the 3A playoffs. Raton in control of the district now and most likely to lock up the 1-seed.

November Awaits: In consecutive weeks the New Mexico Military Institute beat the team ranked one place higher. This week was a convincing showing beating No. 6 Hope Christian, 42-27. The Colts now in the conversation for a top-four seed in the 3A bracket.

New Kids on the Block: Juan Badillo (2022) helped guide the NMMI Colts to their win over Hope Christian on Friday night. Badillo passed for 138-yards and rushed for another 110-yards in the win. Darrell Ochieng (2022) was on the other end of Badillo passes with 107 yards receiving on the night. He also had 79-yards rushing on the night.

President & Vice President: Vigil and Priddy 2021 is the headline for the Rams offense this season. Running back Zach Vigil rushed for three touchdowns on Friday night with quarterback Dominck Priddy totaling for four touchdowns - 2 passing, 2 rushing.

Underclassmen Shine: The Cleveland Storm moved along with ease 54-0 over West Mesa on Friday night. The underclassmen for the Storm owned the end zone for the Storm with the following players getting a TD in the win - Evan Wysong, Elijah Brody (2024), Zachary Beranek (2023), Chuka Tutman (2023), and Harris Moneh (2023).

Matadors Eye Playoffs: The Sandia Matadors made the trip east to Clovis and beat the home team 41-14. This puts Sandia around the 9-11 seed range and secure a playoff birth. The Matador duo of Sean Johnson and Dalton Speis had four touchdowns between the two of them. The Matadors are now tied with Eldorado for second place in district at 3-1. Sandia finishes with Manzano next week. Eldorado takes on Clovis.

District Champs: La Cueva beat Manzano 47-6 to claim the DC on 2-6A. Centennial finished off Hobbs 35-18 to win 3-6A.

Grine: Well, coffee is limited to once a week and I am feeling bougie with Dunkin Donuts coffee. Yes, I know it's not that fancy but when the budget is pennies you save up ten for a nice cup. The creamer is Oatmilk. Never used creamer until this year, it's good. I still prefer black coffee but if I can only have a cup a week I'll put it in. Have a great Saturday folks. Go Notre Dame. It's my sons birthday party so say a prayer as I'll have 9-year olds all day.

D3: Centennial, Las Cruces, Hobbs, Carlsbad, Organ Mountain

Week 10 Bracket
#1 Cleveland
#2 Rio Rancho
#3 La Cueva
#4 Centennial
#5 Volcano Vista vs #12 Carlsbad
#6 Las Cruces vs #11 Clovis
#7 Cibola vs #10 Sandia
#8 Eldorado vs #9 Hobbs

Keep an eye on these games tonight: Carlsbad and Organ Mountain tonight could help one secure a playoff spot. Clovis and Sandia also in play for a seed game.

5A FOOTBALL

PROJECTED DISTRICT FINISH

D1: Farmington, Piedra Vista, Capital, Los Alamos, Miyamura
D2: Mayfield, Santa Teresa, Deming, Chaparral
D3: Roswell, Artesia, Goddard, Alamogordo
D4: Los Lunas, Belen, Valley, Highland, Del Norte

WEEK 10 BRACKET
#1 Farmington
#2 Los Lunas
#3 Roswell
#4 Mayfield
#5 Artesia vs #12 Valley
#6 Goddard vs #11 Capital
#7 Belen vs #10 Deming
#8 Santa Teresa vs #9 Piedra Vista

Bubble: Valley-Alamogordo. Looking at the projections Valley could have two criteria points over Alamogordo. If the coach input form favors Alamogordo it would tie it up and then go to Alamogordo for the 12th spot. Unless we see an upset 1-11 bids are made with the 12th up for grabs.

Finding a Seat: After Farmington and Los Lunas we will have some movement in the 3-8 spots this week but as of now those teams in that range will stay in that range. 9-11 could also see some movement.

4A FOOTBALL

PROJECTED DISTRICT FINISH

D1: Bloomfield, Kirtland Central, Aztec, Gallup, Shiprock
D2: Moriarty, Taos, Pojoaque Valley, Espanola Valley
D3: Lovington, Silver, Ruidoso, Portales

#3 St. Pius X
#4 Moriarty
#5 Albuquerque Academy vs #12 Pojoaque Valley
#6 Silver vs #11 Aztec
#7 Ruidoso vs #10 Valencia
#8 Kirtland Central vs #9 Taos

Bubble: Pojoaque Valley could sneak into the playoffs but it will need some help. Valencia will have to beat Bernalillo and Portales would have to go winless. Still could be a stretch but they'll have district placement and record points.

3 Key Games This Week
Silver (5-3) at Portales (2-6)
Aztec (3-6) at Kirtland Central (4-4)
Valencia (5-4) at Bernalillo (4-4)

3 Key Games this Week
Navajo Prep (6-2) at Tohatchi (5-3)
Hope Christian (5-3) at NMMI (5-2)
St. Michael's (7-1) at Robertson (6-2)
All three games will affect the playoff bracket and where teams are seeded. Navajo Prep/Tohatchi and Hope/NMMI will be for district championships. The winner of each getting the automatic bid and improving their seat. St. Michael's and Robertson outcome could really shape the picture in a new look for week 11 - the final week.

2A FOOTBALL

#2 Tularosa (Auto/District Champ) vs #7 Estancia (Auto/DC)

PROJECTED DISTRICT FINISH
District I
Estancia, Escalante, Laguna-Acoma, McCurdy
District II
Tularosa, Lordsburg, Capitan, Mescalero Apache
District III
Jal, Eunice, Hagerman, Loving
District IV
Texico, Santa Rosa, Clayton

Key Games to Watch This Week
  • Estancia (4-4) travels to Escalante (5-3) for the district championship and likely only bid for the district. Consider this the play-in game for their post-season.
  • Lordsburg (5-2) heads to Capitan (6-2) as both are considered IN this week but a win could lock that playoff birth.
  • Texico (3-4) has the nod as the projected DC and likely to host a first-round game but head to Santa Rosa (4-4) to take on a Lions team that NEEDS a win.
