5A BASKETBALL

1. Las Cruces Bulldawgs (4-0 overall)
2. Cleveland Storm (7-0 overall)
3. Volcano Vista Hawks (3-2 overall)
4. Alamogordo Tigers (4-1 overall)
5. Rio Rancho Rams (4-2 overall)
6. La Cueva Bears (3-0 overall)
7. Hobbs Eagles (4-0 overall)
8. Los Lunas Tigers (3-0 overall)
9. Santa Fe Demons (4-1 overall)
10. Sandia Matadors (2-1 overall)
11. Cibola Cougars (2-3 overall)
12. Atrisco Heritage (2-2 overall)

Scoop: Okay, right now the rankings are all over the place and it may take another week to truly settle down with the massive movements. Yes, never seen this many movements and trying to stick true to our week-to-week rankings we gave our best look.

4A BASKETBALL

1. Highland Hornets (1-2 overall)
2. Taos Tigers (5-0 overall)
3. Bernalillo Spartans (4-1 overall)
4. Del Norte Knights (2-1 overall)

10. Los Alamos Hilltoppers (3-1 overall)
11. Hope Christian Huskies (1-4 overall)
12. St. Pius X Sartans (2-1 overall)

Scoop: Yes, plenty of questions still out in 5A basketball. I will say this, no matter what 8-teams make the state tournament (shoot could say 16 if we didn't get cheated out of an extra day/round of the state tournament) they could all win it all. I watched Bernalillo, Kirtland Central, Gallup, Hope, Valley, St. Pius over the weekend and the parity is right there. Small separation between the 12-teams in the rankings and it will be the team that catches fire at the right time.

Brandon Furbee

NMPreps has learned that 2022 top-rated Quarterback Brandon Furbee has transferred from Grants High School to Farmington High School. Brandon will spend the remainder of his time in high school living with his Mother. He will officially be a Scorpion this week and will begin his quest to fill the QB1 vacancy that will be left by graduating senior Caleb Carrillo.

Brandon's Father, Grants Associate Head Football Coach Mike Furbee, confirmed the move to NMPreps stating, “Yes, I can confirm that Brandon has moved to Farmington and will be attending Farmington High School. This move has been debated and talked about for quite some time between his mom and I. We feel that ultimately this move is in the best interest of Brandon’s long-term future. He [Brandon] is up for the challenge and I feel he will do well and will handle this move and change appropriately. He will be greatly missed within our program. As a parent, I am excited about his future, and as a coach, I look forward to the exciting future and continued success of the Grants High School football program.”

NMPreps will continue to follow this story and the career of Brandon Furbee.

2020 New Mexico Quarterback of the Year

Today, we officially release the finalist for the 2020 New Mexico Quarterback of the Year. NMPreps has released the official New Mexico Quarterback of the Year since 2006.

Caleb Carrillo, 2021 (Farmington HS): Led the Scorpions to a perfect 5-0 record and winner of the 5A bowl. Carrillo passed for 1,197-yards and 21 touchdowns.

Jeff Davison, 2021 (Cleveland HS): The quarterback guided the Cleveland Storm to a perfect 4-0 record and winner of the 6A bowl game. In four games this season he passed for nearly 900 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Jared Jeffrey, 2021 (Lovington HS): Jeffrey was one of the top new quarterbacks in New Mexico this season and had big shoes to fill as the 2019 winner Casey Perez was whom he was replacing. Jeffrey guided the Wildcats to a 4-1 record and winner of the 4A bowl game. 824-yards and 11 touchdowns. Also, rushed for 253-yards and 3-touchdowns.

Hayden Dean, 2021 (Eunice HS): Dean has the story of other first-year quarterbacks on this list filling in for a top next-level quarterback and excelling at the job. Dean kept the Cardinals perfect, won the 2A bowl game, and passed for nearly 800-yards and 10-touchdowns. Dean also rushed for another 407-yards and 6-touchdowns.

Johnny Herrera, 2021 (Volcano Vista HS): If we had a newcomer of the year for quarterbacks Herrera could be the name on that list. Herrera threw for 1,080-yards and 12-touchdowns for the Hawks this season.

Cord Cox, 2021 (Artesia HS): Cox was seldomly mentioned this season but overall had a great season passing the ball for the Bulldogs. He threw for 1,172-yards and 11 touchdowns.

Baylor Diaz, 2021 (Portales HS): Diaz perhaps one of the top mobile quarterbacks this season as he rushed for 445-yards (10th in rushing in the state) and 5-touchdowns. He also passed for 467-yards and 7-touchdowns with 1 INT for the Rams this season. The team went 3-1.

Aden Chavez, 2023 (Cibola HS): In two games for the Cougars Chavez threw for 522-yards and 5 touchdowns. The Cougars won both games.

Andres Rivera, 2023 (Albuquerque Academy): A new and up-and-coming quarterback in New Mexico. Rivera a two-year starter for the Chargers has them on the verge of a breakthrough. Passed for 728-yards (7th) and 6-touchdowns this season.

Lucas Coriz, 2022 (St. Michael's): Coriz played three games for the Horsemen this season and passed for 667-yards and 11-touchdowns. The Horsemen went a perfect 3-0 on the shortened season.

Others Nominated - Honorable Mention: Dylan Quartieri (Raton/2022), Adam Salazar (Bernalillo/2021), Manny Fuentez (Dexter/2024), Cesar Daniel Granados (Mayfield/2022), Brandon Giles (Jal/2021)

Daily Dimes: Tuesday, April 13th

Schedule for Tuesday - 5A
Alamogordo (4-1) at Gadsden (1-3), 7pm
Capital (2-2) at Manzano (1-3), 7pm
Carlsbad (3-1) at Clovis (4-1), 7pm
Centennial (1-3) at Las Cruces (4-0), 7pm
Los Lunas (3-0) at Albuquerque (2-2), 7pm
Mayfield (3-1) at Onate (1-3), 7pm
Piedra Vista (0-5) at Farmington (2-3), 7pm
Roswell (5-1) at Hobbs (4-0), 7pm

Game of the Night: Roswell (No. 13 NMPreps Top-20) at Hobbs (No. 7) should create some buzz down south. Hobbs is quietly sitting at 4-0 and looking for some more love in the polls. This would be the quality win to catch the eye. Roswell battled with top-ranked Cleveland over the weekend and looking to rebound here against another top-10 ranked team.

Bid Type of Game: Carlsbad and Clovis both unranked this week will do some battle with hopes of getting back into the playoff conversation. Carlsbad at 3-1 is off to a solid start under longtime girls basketball coach John Zumbrun. Clovis like Carlsbad has one loss, both lost to Artesia, but Clovis could have a criteria win over Espanola that would put them in the 'need' to win tonight.

Scoop: Outside of the two games mentioned the rest will roll in the favor of the favorite. Alamogordo, Capital Las Cruces, Los Lunas, Mayfield, and Farmington win. There shouldn't be any close calls here and a quiet night.

Schedule for Tuesday - 4A
Albuquerque Academy (0-3) at Bernalillo (4-1), 7pm
Artesia (3-3) at Lovington (1-2), 7pm
Aztec (0-3) at Bloomfield (2-1), 7pm
Goddard (1-5) at Portales (1-2), 7pm
Grants (1-4) at Valencia (1-4), 6pm
Kirtland Central (3-0) at Shiprock (1-2), 7pm
Los Alamos (3-1) at St. Michael's (3-1), 7pm
Miyamura (1-2) at Gallup (1-1), 7pm
St. Pius X (2-1) at Highland (1-2), 7pm
Valley (1-1) at Del Norte (2-1), 7pm

Championship Feelings: St. Pius X won both games last week moving to 2-0 in district play and will now take on Highland, the preseason favorite to win this district. They beat up on new district opponent Belen last week. The winner takes a seat in the driver's seat during the first go-round.

4A Player of the Year Conversation: Valley has Derick Chavez (2021) and Del Norte features Shane Douma-Sanchez (2023) in what is a showdown between two of the top players in the state. Also, this league had issues with bids last season and with the field cut in half, this season finishing first or second is a must.

3A, 2A, & 1A Schedule
ATATC (0-3) at Monte Del Sol (3-0)
Capitan (0-0) at Cloudcroft (0-2)
Clayton (3-0) at Raton (1-4)
Coronado (2-2) at Santa Fe Prep (1-2)
Cuba (0-4) at East Mountain (0-4)
Dexter (1-3) at Tucumcari (0-5)
ECAOGCA (3-2) at Santa Rosa (4-0)
Hagerman (2-1) at Eunice (1-2)
Jal (4-0) at Tatum (1-1)
Legacy Academy (0-0) at Rehoboth Christian (3-0)
Lordsburg (0-1) at Tularosa (2-0)
Los Alamos (3-1) at St. Michael's (3-1)
Loving (0-3) at NMMI (2-3)
Mesilla Valley (2-0) at Hatch Valely (0-4)
McCurdy (3-1) at Mora (1-1)
Navajo Pine (0-3) at Ramah (0-3)
Navajo Prep (5-0) at Newcomb (1-2)
Penasco (2-2) at Escalanate (2-1)
Tierra Encantada (0-1) at Estancia (1-1)
Questa (0-4) at Mesa Vista (1-2)

Keep an Eye: Los Alamos-4A taking on St. Michael's-3A is the cross-classification game to watch tonight. Los Alamos was hot after two weeks but cooled some with the recent loss and they are looking to rebound quickly in a short season. St. Michael's has a talented class coming through and this could be a season the return to the final game. They are currently ranked 4th in 3A.

Record: 3-0 overall
Head Coach: Joey Fernandez | Assistant Coaches: Joey Butler, Kevin Hauk, Michael Pitel
Key Returners: Lucas Coriz (QB/2022); Devin Flores (2022); Daymon Lujan (RB/2022);
Class: 3A

SPRING OVERVIEW (APRIL 12TH)

Led by one of the top head coaches in New Mexico, a next-level quarterback in Lucas Coriz (2022), and a defense that only allowed 29-points (21 of those coming in the bowl game against Raton), the Horsemen is NMPreps pick to play for the 3A title in 2021. Coriz threw for nearly 700-yards and 11-touchdowns in the short three-game season and looked every bit ready to have the Horsemen as a true title contender. Also, the excitement on offense for the Horsemen comes in the form of Devin Flores (2022) and Daymon Lujan (2022) along with Creed Chavez (2022/WR). Flores does it on both sides of the ball for the Horsemen and had a big showing during their bowl game. They'll be challenged next season with a handful of district opponents looking to return at full strength but this could be a Horsemen team with enough talent to write its own ending.

Tournament seeding

Go ahead and get your outrage ready for seeding this year. The soccer seeds just came out and they show how unpredictable the seeds can be when the playoff field is smaller, teams play few or no non-conference games, and covid plays a role.

Highland's boys played only five games (against an iffy schedule) and got the No. 3 seed in 4A.

Lovington's boys went undefeated in what is always the worst soccer district in 4A and got the No. 1 seed.

La Cueva's girls -- a dynasty -- gave up only two goals in five games, but played a very tough schedule and went 2-0-3. They got left out of the playoffs altogether.

What's the lesson for basketball? Look for some mediocre teams lucky enough to be in bad districts make a run and get seeded high. And better teams will be left out.

ffdf.jpg NO. 20 WEST MESA MUSTANGS
Record: 3-0 overall (2-0 district)
Head Coach: Anthony Ansotigue
Key Returning Players: Daniel Ayala (QB/2022); Chris Johnson (SB/CB/2023); Anthony Rodriguez (WR/2023); Anthony Wilkins (OL/2022)
Class 6A

SPRING OVERVIEW

With Daniel Ayala back to direct the West Mesa offense, head coach Anthony Ansotigue will look to continue building the Mustangs football program. The Mustangs are coming off their best season in football and finished with a bowl, a perfect 3-0 record and ranked for the first time since 2017 when they finished 7-4. Ayala played a huge role at quarterback for the Mustangs but a wealth of talent returns on the sidelines for the Mustangs; the x-factor is returning an experienced lined anchored by Anthony Wilkins, 6-foot-3 OL. In those trenches will also have Nathan Martinez (2022), Abram Smith-Bernhardt (2024), and Brandon Brewton (2023). Chris Johnson and Anthony Rodriguez provide options on the outside for Ayala as two reliable receivers. On offense, the holes to fill will be with Ja'Calvin Newsom (RB/signed with Eastern New Mexico) and WR Joseph Thompson who left as graduating seniors.

Week 3 Reactions

Saturday
Who gets left out Eldorado, Farmington, Sandia or La Cueva? All four are playoff level teams and Farmington beating La Cueva on Saturday just has them in a royal rumble.

Onate is actually a player in that district. Centennial needed a buzzer-beater to win 57-56 on Saturday to beat Onate. This thing could still favor a good Onate squad - hello.

Land of single digits. Hobbs 71-5 over Silver. Roy 55-3 over Des Moines and Springer 54-9 over Wagon Mound

District Championship - Round 1: We mentioned this game in our weekend wire but Las Cruces (No. 1 NMPreps Top 20) taking on the contender in Alamogordo (No. 3) is a must-see game. This could potentially be a Final Four or State Championship preview as well. Yep, that's my bold take - unless either team loses players. The first sip of coffee is down.

Little Brother Looking for an Upset: Sandia Prep is the top-ranked 3A team and likely a should-be Top-20 ranked team will host Rio Rancho (No. 8) today. Can the 3A school 'upset' the bigger 5A program? This one has the potential to go in the favor of the Sundevils but Rio Rancho has the depth but coming off a 34-point loss on Thursday could have them stumbling into the game?

Potential State Game: Cleveland (No 2) is taking on Roswell (No. 17) and yes we mentioned this game already on our weekend wire but it's one to have your eyes on this game. Roswell playing their third game in as many days could hinder our high point prediction. So if you took the under that day, good for you because now it changes. I still see an all-offensive game and one won in transition, as it should be. Roll the ball out in this one. This one also has several players that we could find on the post-season award watchlist with Nathan Hasberry (2021) of Cleveland and Taymon Burrola (2021) of Roswell squaring off. Both could also be in the Mr. Basketball conversation.

Painting the Town Green: Los Alamos has been the early talk around town. They head to Espanola Valley which is trending in the other direction, starting 1-3 on the year. Los Alamos at 3-0 with an impressive win over Hope (which could be way down this year after watching them last night against Valley). Are the Los Alamos Hilltoppers ready to be the top team in District 2-4A? The new names on the board are Wesley Stanfield (2022) who is averaging 25 points per game, Harrison Frank (2023) putting in 21 per game, and Niko Garcia (2024) adding in 10. The future is bright.

First One Down: Valley head coach EZ Panas earned the first win of his career beating Hope Christian 50-28 last night. Oh yeah if you questioned the Vikings (I did) then you have your answer on them. They are not going anywhere this team was knocking down threes, Derick Chavez (2021) is sound, and they have role players.
