Grine's Road To The PIT: Bracket Watch, Bids, & Standings

DISTRICT 1-5A
No. 2 Volcano Vista 5-0 overall, 3-0 district
Cleveland 4-1 overall, 2-1 district
No. 12 Cibola 2-2 overall, 2-2 district
Rio Rancho 3-3 overall, 1-2 district
Atrisco Heritage Academy 0-4 overall, 0-3 district

Lock (as of today): Volcano Vista
Work Left To Do: Cibola, Rio Rancho, Cleveland
Out: Atrisco Heritage

Overview: Volcano Vista (No. 2 NMPreps 5A Rankings) and Cibola (No. 12) are the only two teams from the district in the Top-12 Power Rankings for this week. What does that mean? Well, this could be in jeopardy of being a 1-bid league. Cleveland, ranked #19 in the New Mexico Top-20, helps and has a criteria win over Espanola Valley that could become helpful.

4/9/2021 Update: Cleveland beat Cibola at home on Friday night to move into the runner-up slot. Volcano Vista also thumped Rio Rancho to stay at the top.

DISTRICT 2-5A
No. 6 La Cueva 3-0 overall, 3-0 district
No. 8 Eldorado 2-1 overall, 2-1 district
No. 3 Farmington 4-1 overall, 2-1 district
No. 5 Sandia 2-2 overall, 2-2 district
No. 10 Piedra Vista 3-3 overall, 1-3 district
West Mesa 0-3 overall, 0-3 district

Lock (as of today): La Cueva
Work Left To Do: Eldorado, Farmington, Piedra Vista, Sandia
Out: West Mesa

Overview: What a district in girl's basketball! West Mesa appears to be going through a rebuild this season but the other five should all be playoff teams in a normal state tournament field of 16. Also, they could all win an opening-round game if the field was 16, so that's the difficult part. Eldorado might be the dark horse this season and the win over Farmington was impressive. I'll say two-bid league but should be three at the very least. Also, as you see the rankings are going to shift drastically this week. The tough part with it all is Farmington beat Sandia, Sandia beat Eldorado, Eldorado beat Farmington. We have a three-team tango for a bid.

4/9/2021 Update: Sandia beat Piedra Vista on Friday night after publishing, the record has been updated.

DISTRICT 3-5A
No. 4 Centennial 3-0 overall, 3-0 district
Onate 3-0 overall, 3-0 district
No. 9 Mayfield 2-1 overall, 2-1 district
Las Cruces 2-1 overall, 2-1 district
Alamogordo 1-3 overall, 1-3 district
Deming 1-3 overall, 1-3 district
Gadsden 0-4 overall, 0-4 district

Lock (as of today): Centennial
Work Left To Do: Onate, Mayfield
Out: Las Cruces, Alamogordo, Deming, Gadsden

Overview: Onate jumped out to a 3-0 start to Las Cruces, Gadsden, and Alamogordo. They await dates with Centennial (Sat) and Mayfield to maintain their position for a possible tournament bid. Centennial is darn good and has the edge with the win over Mayfield for the auto at this point. In all reality, a two-bid league is what it should be but has the chance of being a 1-bid.

DISTRICT 4-5A
No. 1 Hobbs 2-0 overall, 0-0 district
Carlsbad 2-0 overall, 0-0 district
Roswell 2-0 overall, 0-0 district
Clovis 3-1 overall, 0-0 district

Lock: Hobbs
Work Left To Do: Carlsbad
Out: Clovis, Roswell

Overview: This will be a 1-bid league and we all know that Hobbs is going undefeated. Carlsbad is the next best and they are outside the Top-12 leading into week three. Roswell and Clovis would need a lot. I will say Roswell did smack Lovington and they look improved Yes, Clovis is 3-1 and the win over Goddard was quality but seeing them against Valencia, I just don't see them getting the bid from this district.

DISTRICT 5-5A
Albuquerque 3-0 overall, 3-0 district
No. 7 Los Lunas 4-1 overall, 4-0 district
Capital 1-3 overall, 1-2 district
Santa Fe 0-2 overall, 0-1 district
Manzano 0-2 overall, 0-2 district
Rio Grande 0-3 overall, 0-3 district

Lock: Los Lunas
Work Left To Do: Albuquerque
Out: Capital, Santa Fe, Manzano, Rio Grande

Overview: Perhaps the weakest district in 5A will be a one-bid league. No wonder why Los Lunas decided when they made the move up they wanted this league. They did get a taste of the 5A champ Hobbs earlier this season falling 55-32. Albuquerque is 3-0 but those wins are against Capital, Rio Grande and Manzano so don't carry a ton of weight when looking for a tournament bid.

HOW DOES THE PLAYOFF FIELD LOOK TODAY
6:45 am on Saturday, April 10th

1. Hobbs Eagles (auto)
2. Volcano Vista (auto)
3. Centennial (auto)
4. Los Lunas (auto)
5. La Cueva (auto)
6. Mayfield (at-large)
7. Eldorado (at-large)
8. Farmington (at-large)

Next Four (Work Left To Do)
Sandia
Carlsbad
Albuquerque
Cleveland

4/9/2021 Scoop: Sandia has that win over Eldorado but Eldorado beating Farmington helps propel them into the 7th slot. I truly feel it will be a two/three-bid league. Cibola can't afford a slip up against Rio Rancho or Cleveland and honestly, they shouldn't and they and Albuquerque High could enter the debate with only 2-losses. Cibola's both losses to Volcano Vista and Albuquerque's to Los Lunas; So one of these 10-2 teams could be left out and maybe both with their schedule of strength rating going to be an issue.

Next Four (Work Left To Do)
Cibola
Onate
Piedra Vista
Rio Rancho

Overview: Sandia better take care of business tonight against Piedra Vista or they could have their bubble popped. Onate would need to beat Mayfield out and then only fall to Centennial.

Overview: We have plenty of movement up and down this week and at this point, we will still be doing a musical chair style for a week or two. The biggest leaper at this time is Del Norte with their 54-50 win over Atrisco Heritage. Another surprise maybe to some of the outside is also seeing Alamogordo at No. 3 in the opening Power-20. This squad has plenty of potentials to go far this season.

2020 NMPreps New Mexico Coach of the Year

The 2020 NMPreps New Mexico of the Year for the Spring 2021 football season. For all post-season awards, nominations were submitted by fans, media, and coaches.

Candidates

Jeremey Maupin, Los Lunas High School:
The Tigers are 2-0 and will play their third game of the season this weekend. The nomination for Maupin explained the adversities of being told they were not playing, to playing, then re-scheduling a game, and the ability to keep the team focused.

Jeff Dalton, Farmington High School: The Scorpions have been impressive this season and sitting at 4-0 on the year heading into their bowl game against Mayfield high school.

Anthony Ansotigue, West Mesa High School: The Mustangs appear to be on the uptrend after a couple of rebuilding seasons. Ansotigue in year two has the Mustangs at 2-0 after being underdogs in both games.

John Cobos, Bernalillo High School: The job done at Bernalillo high school has been top level. The Spartans are back to playing, similar to when I started at preps, in 2008 when they went 6-4 and then in 2009 going 7-4 before a decade of being under .500 on their record.

Rio Thompson, Grants High School: The Pirates are 3-0 on the season and ranked number one in 4A football as they head into the bowl season game against Bernalillo high school. These are back-to-back seasons the Pirates have gone perfect heading into the postseason.

Anthony Gonzales, Lovington High School: The Wildcats at 3-1 have another stellar season, and coach Gonzales continues to build Lovington back up. The Wildcats will play Bloomfield at the University of New Mexico this week.

Dusty Giles, Jal High School: "The Panthers are 3-1 on the season and playing some tough football this season". The Panthers ranked third in 2A football, have earned big wins against Santa Rosa and Hagerman.

Heath Ridenour, Cleveland High School: The Storm are the top team in the state of New Mexico....again. At 3-0 on the season, the Storm looks ahead to their bowl game at UNM against Las Cruces.

Daily Dimes: Thursday, April 8th

Thursday, April 8th
Artesia at Clovis
Chaparral at Mescalero Apache
Deming at Centennial
Grants at St. Pius X
Manzano at Albuquerque
Onate at Alamogordo
Las Cruces at Gadsden
Rio Grande at Los Lunas
Texico at Portales
Valencia vs Belen
West Las Vegas at Espanola Valley

I fear we could see a 100-point game tonight. If Los Lunas (3-1) plays their top players all game long this could be very ugly vs Rio Grande (0-2)
West Las Vegas at Espanola Valley creates a nice northern match-up although Espanola should win comfortable.

Heath Ridenour

I spoke with Cleveland Head Coach Heath Ridenour after the game, on his team's performance he said, "I'm proud of these kids, we gave them the gameplan but honestly it didn't matter what we called, these kids are hungry, they play hard, they play with passion, they play for each other and that showed on the field today. I'm just really proud of their effort and really proud of how well they came together for this short season."

On where this Storm team ranks with prior teams coach said, "That's the question I get all the time, how does this team compare to the 2011, 2015, and the 2019 teams. They are all different and hard to compare but this team is right up there if not the best. What this team had to go through to get where they are today; it's a special team and they will hold a special place in my heart forever."

On the performance of Luke Wysong coach commented, "Luke is coming to UNM, he was our captain today and I said your done playing on high school football fields so we might as well kick off your career at University Stadium the right way. We knew we had a chance to be pretty explosive today and we were explosive and Luke was the beneficiary of that."

Asked if his team was 6A champs he simply stated, "6A champs."

Daily Dimes: April 6th

Tuesday, April 6th
Alamogordo (0-2) at Deming (0-1)
Belen (2-1) at Los Alamos (0-3)
Centennial (1-0) at Mayfield (2-0)
Clayton (0-0) at Roy (1-0)
Clovis (1-1) at Texico (0-0)
Cobre (1-0) at Santa Teresa (0-0)
Del Norte (0-0) at Bernalillo (3-0)
East Mountain (0-2) at Moriarty (0-0)
Farmington (4-0) at Eldorado (1-1)
Gadsden (0-1) at Onate (1-0)
Grants (0-2) at Kirtland Central (0-0)
Hope Christian (2-1) at Albuquerque Academy (1-1)
Los Lunas (2-1) at Capital (1-2)
Loving (0-0) at Eunice (0-0)
Menaul (0-1) at Evangel Christian (0-0)
Piedra Vista (2-2) at West Mesa (0-2)
Raton (0-1) at Maxwell (0-1)
Roswell (0-0) at Lovington (0-0)
Taos (1-1) at Robertson (2-2)
Valencia (0-2) at Socorro (0-1)

Game of the Night: Centennial (1-0) taking on Mayfield (2-0) has a lot riding on it with a potential early district championship game. Reminder that we only have 8-teams dancing this season and a DC automatically gets you into the tournament. Larissa Laborin (2022) is one of the top-20 players in New Mexico and looking to back up a 14-point, 4 rebound performance in her opening game. Sophomore Aspen Salazar also with 14 is a new name on the scene. Kimberley Gutierrez (2021) and Felicia Pugh (2022) duo for the Mayfield Trojans could stand in the way. Off to a 2-0 start Gutierrez leading the way with 17 points per game.

Playoff Atmosphere: Farmington (4-0) at Eldorado (1-1). The Eldorado Eagles have already made a huge improvement from last season but now they take on one of the top teams in 5A. Farmington features one of the top players and shooters in the state in Kiiyani Anitielu (2022); she's already averaging 28 points per game. Cece Barela (2021) has been a ranked player for four years now and looking to end her senior season with a playoff push. This could end up as a first round playoff game down the road, the intensity will surely be there tonight.

Animas (0-0) at Silver (0-0)
Clovis (1-0) at Espanola Valley (1-2)
Hatch Valley (0-0) at Chaparral (0-1)
Penasco (1-0) at Pecos (1-1)

Thoreau (2-1) at Navajo Prep (1-0)
Tucucumari (0-0) at Texico (0-0)
Questa (0-1) at Coronado (1-1)

Big Three for Monday
Clovis (1-0) at Espanola Valley (1-2): Traditionally, this would be a very high-quality game to watch between a 5A and 4A team. However, this season we are still at an unknown on both teams but this could favor the visiting Clovis Wildcats. Outside of a win over Pojoaque Valley (56-46), the Sundevils have a 22-point loss to Santa Fe and a 51-point loss to Cleveland, both of 5A. This isn't the same Espanola Valley teams of the 2010s and we wait and see the development moving forward. Clovis won their opener 67-63 over Goddard but we are still in a wait and see for this year's team after they lost much of their key players from last year's Elite Eight team.

St. Michael's (1-0) at Robertson (2-0): Both considered key contenders in 3A basketball and are off to solid starts. St. Michael's is coming off a 66-61 win over West Las Vegas and could feature more of their athletes coming over from football. Robertson at 2-0 with wins over Pojoaque Valley (47-43) and Pecos (65-47).

Tucumcari (0-0) at Texico (0-0): Texico is favored, with plenty of talented players returning to the team this season but Tucumcari, off a 9-win season is looking to make a trend upward this season.

BREAKDOWN

Overview: The number one team in New Mexico has stayed the number one team in New Mexico throughout the entire season. Cleveland at a perfect 4-0 takes home the title and with an impressive 56-7 outing of Las Cruces at University Stadium Saturday has been talked about as being one of the best ever. Rio Rancho, Clovis, and Farmington round out the top four, Farmington moving up after winning the 5A elite bowl game.

Dropped. Grants (14), Eldorado (15), and Alamogordo (19). The three fell out after losing their bowl game this past weekend. Eldorado stayed close with top-10 ranked Cibola but didn't receive enough votes to remain in the top-20 and was edged out by Artesia beating Alamogordo, 55-28.

New: West Mesa (18), St. Michael's (19), and Artesia (20). West Mesa shocked us a pair of times this season after being an underdog against Atrisco Heritage and Sandia but coming out ahead in both games. St. Michael's stayed perfect this season with a 47-21 win over Raton - just imagine if they didn't have to cancel the first game of the season. Artesia climbs back into the top-20, and what a year it would have been without the Bulldogs, but an impressive outing against then ranked Alamogordo (55-28) helped them back in. Also, just a testament to the tough schedules some teams play.

What About? Del Norte (3-0), Bernalillo (4-0). Super close to making it into the rankings this week as well but had a little too many teams to leapfrog. Bernalillo might have the bigger argument after beating a top-20 team in the bowl game. The only issue was they were a little too high up and would have had to leapfrog others that also won. We should also add the Tohatchi went a perfect 5-0 this season.

6A FOOTBALL
1. Cleveland 4-0
2. Rio Rancho 3-1
3. Clovis 3-2
4. Las Cruces 3-1
5. Centennial 2-2
6. Cibola 2-0
7. Volcano Vista 2-1
8. Carlsbad 2-3

Top Games to Watch during Week 3

NMPreps.com's daily guide to New Mexico high school basketball for the 2021 season. #nmpreps

Monday

Penasco (2-1) at Pecos (2-0): Gone is plenty of the talent that has been moving this program forward and helping them reach several late playoff runs. After dropping their opening to Pojoaque they've recovered winning the last two over Taos and Cimarron. Guided by what could become a dynasty of youth Savannah Ortiz (2022) leads Pecos in scoring with 14.5 ppg. Next is 8th grader Natalia Stout (11.5 ppg) and sophomore Mestidawn Roybal (10 ppg).

Shiprock (1-0) at Piedra Vista (1-2): Shiprock hasn't been the same since they let go of Larenson Henderson (and Farmington has excelled since hiring him immediately after Shiprocks decision). Well, they did start this season with a nice 78-32 win over Newcomb on Friday of last week. Piedra Vista a top-5 preseason pick has come out slow out the gate going 1-2 to start the season. After winning the opener they dropped a pair of games to La Cueva and Eldorado; Lanae Billy (2022) with a much bigger role this season is leading the way with 18 ppg and 8 rebounds.

Valley (0-0) at Volcano Vista (2-0): Valley played well last season winning 17-games and earning a bid to state. They return their top two scorers in Gillian Roybal (2021) and Shaela Carrillo (2022). Volcano Vista already off to a hot 2-0 start with wins over Cibola (63-45), and Cleveland (65-32). The Hawks have plenty of depth but Jaelyn Bates (2022), Natalia Chavez (2022), and Giannah Aragon (2021) have come out with big games; Bates (23 ppg), Chavez (15), and Aragon (12).

Espanola Valley (2-0) at Cleveland (1-1): Espanola Valley had some key players returning this season and they'll let it fly from behind the arch. They have a 50-47 win over Robertson and a 60-36 win over Capital on their belt. Cleveland lost to one of the top teams in the state, 65-32, but earned a quality win over Hope Christian 64-41 last week.
