Week One: Preview, Picks & Predictions in New Mexico high school football
Grine | NMPreps

Each week we will breakdown the games to watch in New Mexico high school football. We will also release our staff picks and predictions for each game taking place that week.

6A FOOTBALL

No. 2 Clovis High School vs No. 7 Hobbs High School: We could reference this game as a rivalry contest between the eastern schools but Clovis has won more than enough here. The Wildcats also feature one of the most talented teams not only in Wildcat history but New Mexico history. With several players already committed to play at the next level all eyes will be on the purple and white. Star running back Jeston Webskowski (2021) is the name we all know and the one that could rack several post season awards. The Hobbs Eagles won't back down though and for second-year head coach Ken Stevens the Eagles are coming for a win. The Eagles have some talent of their own and look to returning players like Jarren Lewis (QB) who passed for nearly 2000 yards last season. Grine's Pick: Clovis. Line: Clovis -18.5

No. 6 Carlsbad High School vs Artesia High School: The Cavemen enter the season with a handful of uncertainties after graduating a talented class in 2020. The Cavemen took the Eddy County rivalry game last season 48-35 and look to maintain the upper hand on rival Artesia. The Bulldogs bring top 35 player Braxton McDonald into the contest and will look to avenge the loss on opening night in 2019. The Bulldog will also feature a new QB under center this coming season, a position that guides this air it out attack. Grine's Pick: Artesia. Line: Artesia -3.5

5A FOOTBALL

No. 4 Artesia High School at Carlsbad High School: The Cavemen enter the season with a handful of uncertainties after graduating a talented class in 2020.

No. 5 Farmington High School at Aztec High School: The Scorpions will take on former district foe and 4A's Aztec this Friday night. The Scorpions feature one of the top QB-WR duos in Caleb Carrillo (QB/2021) and Chance Carrillo (WR/2022). Caleb returns after passing for 2,968-yards last season and 35-touchdowns. Aztec took a loss last season, 56-33, to the Scorpions but hope to build off having an inexperienced roster of underclassmen in 2019. Marcquis Henry (2023) had a stellar freshman campaign and is a sophomore will many eyes on his progression. Grine's Pick: Farmington. Line: Farmington -15.5

No. 6 Alamogordo High School vs Bloomfield High School: This contest will take place at Bernalillo High School this season and provides us a quality match up with Alamogordo returning as a favorite in 5A football and Bloomfield returning after falling in the 4A state championship last season. Alamogordo features one of the top players in New Mexico with Sean Hays (2021/RB) looking to make a name known this season. Bloomfield has holes to fill, a new QB, RB, and will look to Bryce Perez (2021/WR) and Raymundo Alcantar (2021/WR) as the top returning players for the Bobcats. Grine's Pick: Alamogordo. Line: Alamogordo -12

No. 7 Piedra Vista vs No. 11 Miyamura: The only game this week between two 5A programs. The Piedra Vista Panthers won 8-games last season, winning a playoff game, and hope to stay among the top in the classification. The Panthers did graduate some of their go-to players last season but the future looks bright and word is the underclassmen could carry them forward for the next few years. Miyamura enters the season without their top quarterback, after he played fall football in Arizona this season. They return some players from last season that contributed well but it could be a year of new players taking on new roles. Grine's Pick: PV. Line: Piedra Vista -14

Preseason Watch: 5 Running backs that could be the 2021 Mr. Football winner

Luke Padilla (Capital High School)
RB-2021: The Jaguars running back decided to play his senior season and the Fort Lewis commit could have one to remember. The program is far from the cellar days and now one of the top players to every wear the black and teal could take home one of the top awards in New Mexico high school football. Padilla rushed for 1,852 yards last season with 23 touchdowns. With a shortened season we could see the winner, if it's a RB, rush for over 350 yards - he averaged 185 per game last season.

Jeston Webskowski (Clovis High School)
RB-2021: All eyes now turn to Webskowski with QB Harris already at Fort Collins, Colorado. He rushed for 1,713-yards and 27-touchdowns last season playing one of the more difficult schedules in New Mexico last season. That doesn't change this season as they hit the road twice to Rio Rancho to take on the Rams and Cleveland Storm.

Zach Vigil (Rio Rancho High School)
RB-2022: Vigil is ranked among the top-35 players in New Mexico this preseason and will look to build off a sophomore season where he rushed for 1,253-yards and 18-touchdowns. The Rams have a new head coach and things could look different this season along with replacing D-1 QB from the 2019 season.

Cayden Walton (Raton High School)
RB-2023: The longshot is with sophomore Cayden Walton on the surging Raton Tigers which seem to be back in the spotlight with a top ranking this preseason. Walton rushed for 1,907 yards and 19 touchdowns as a freshman in 2019.

Tyler Jenson (Cleveland High School)
RB-2021: The former La Cueva Bear will now wear Storm colors for the 2021 season. Jenson rushed for nearly 600-yards last season and the Storm are loaded with talent, likely to air the ball out to its plethora of next level receivers. Jenson could be the x-factor and see the endzone many times this season.

The Next Five In
Sean Hays (Alamogordo)
Marino Rivera-Noblitt (Estancia)
Terrell Hocker (Grants)
Slayd Campos (Cibola)
Derek Chavez (Los Lunas)

Grine: Rapid Fire with Phattboy Loveless (Cleveland HS)

NMPreps.com site manager Joshua Griñe talks with another prospect on our Rapid Fire conversation.

1-on-1

Grine: Full Name.
Loveless: Phattboy Loveless

Grine: Okay, I have to ask. How did you get the name?
Loveless: When I was first born my parents didn’t know what to name me and I was a pretty big baby so my dad said let’s name him Phattboy.

Grine: Jersey number and why?
Loveless: #44, I chose that number because it’s one of my lucky numbers

Grine: Favorite player and team?
Loveless: My favorite football player is Chase Young and my favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys

Grine: Who inspired you to play football?
Loveless: My grandmother was the woman who helped me pursue football taking me to all my practices and games and being my biggest supporter.

Grine: What would be your super power?
Loveless: If I had a super power I would probably want to be invisible

Grine: Favorite carton/tv show growing up?
Loveless: My favorite cartoon/ tv show growing up was Spongebob. It’s just a classic-funny show

Grine: If you won the lottery, what would you buy?

Grine: What are you looking for in a college?
Loveless: When looking at school, I look towards a school with a great law program and somewhere I know I can grow and start a career.

Grine: Are you guys state champ contenders again?
Loveless: Yes, I think my school is a state champion contender. We work hard everyday, just to stay ready we keep each other sharp and ready and we don’t back down from anything. Some teammates to watch will be Tre Watson, Trey Ortega, Luke Wysong, Jeff Davidson

Grine: What is it like playing for Cleveland?
Loveless: My favorite memories with Cleveland have been bonding with my boys and having a good time and winning state! Playing at Cleveland is a fun but competitive place, you go through different challenges to see if you’re tough enough to last. I like that it’s pushes you to the limit and makes you succeed.
