Top QB-WR Duos in 2020

Top QB-WR Duos in 2020
Grine of NMPreps

NMPreps.com lists the top quarterback and wide receiver duos for New Mexico high school football in 2020.

Aden Chavez & Elijah Spalding (Cibola High School)

If we are looking for new duos to watch in 2020, this is that dup. Aden Chavez (QB/2023) is coming off a phenomenal freshman season which contributes to the program Rod Williams has built at Cibola. Chavez tossed for nearly 1500 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Looking to take on the role as the go-to WR is Elijah Spalding (WR/2021) who had 531-yards and three touchdowns last season.

Caleb Carrillo & Chance Carrillo (Farmington High School)

The older of the two Carrillo's returns this season after throwing for 2,992 passing yards and 36 touchdowns as a junior. Both numbers rank in the top five in the state for Caleb Carrillo (2021/QB). Chance Carrillo (2022/WR) was on the receiving end of 810 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Scorpions.

Chance Harris & Jaden Phillips (Clovis High School)

This rapport should continue to grow as Jaden Phillips (WR/2021) will now take on the role of first option after the graduation to Malik Phillips. This duo in eleven games still went for nearly 500-yards and this number could go for over 1,000. Harris (QB/2021) tossed for over 2,200-yards and 22-touchdowns last season and enters 2020 as the top ranked QB in New Mexico.

Dylan Quartieri & Matthew Quartieri (Raton High School)

Another duo that share the same last name on our list of the top quarterback and receivers duos for 2020. Dylan Quartieri (2022/QB) threw for 1,288-yards and 12-touchdowns last season as a sophomore. His top target was Matthew Quartieri (2022) with 429-yards and 5 touchdowns. The Tigers went 6-6 overall last season and could be a sneaky good team in 2020, dark horse type.

Jarren Lewis & Demitrius Frausto (Hobbs High School)

The unknown on the list at this point is between Lewis and Frausto of Hobbs High School. Jarren Lewis (2021/QB) threw for 1,974 yards and 18 touchdowns in year one as quarterback for the Hobbs Eagles. The Eagles graduate the top three receiving yard leaders from last season but Frausto (2021/WR) was a solid fourth with 435-yards and a pair of TDs. The Eagles went 2-8 overall in year one under head coach Ken Stevens but the former Eunice head coach should have them on the uptrend in season two.

Jeff Davison & Luke Wysong, Trevon Dennard, Tre Watson (Cleveland High School)

Jeff Davison will be able to just throw the ball up in 2020 with three of the top receivers lining up for the Storm. Luke Wysong (2021/WR) led the way with 525 receiving yards last season, Trevon Dennard (2021/WR) was the leader with 6-touchdowns, and in only three games Tre Watson (2021/WR) had 216 yards and 3 touchdowns. Wysong has committed to the University of New Mexico while Watson has several offers from UNM, NMSU, Texas State and others. Davison threw for 1,169-yards in six games for the Storm.

Marcquis Henry & Mason Rios, Austin Jaime (Aztec High School)

New head coach Eric Stovall will throw the ball, making this marriage a perfect fit for him. The Tigers return Marcquis Henry (2023/QB), who is coming off a freshman season tossing for 1,245-yards and 13-touchdowns. He does lose his top two targets from a year ago but returns a pair of 2021 receivers in Mason Rios and Austin Jaime who had 432 yards between the two, each with around 220.

NMPreps.com will continue to update the list of top quarterback-wide receiver duos in 2020.

Best & Worst Case Scenario: Carlsbad Cavemen

NMPreps.com gives a full breakdown of each game for all teams in New Mexico high school football.

More: Albuquerque | Atrisco Heritage

CARLSBAD: Best-Case Scenario (7-3 overall, 3-2 district); Worst-Case Scenario (2-8 overall, 2-3 district); Over/Under (4.5)

We were wrong last season. The Cavemen projected to lose their coin flip games last season, won them. Can they do it again in 2020? The thing about going into last season that we underestimated was the skill position players returning and used at fulll strength. They will need to replace some quality players like Nate Najar (RB), Kaden Smith (QB), Shamar Smith (WR) along with their line including Crimson McKenzie (OL). Plenty to replace and 4-games will be the goal to get to on the wins side.

NMPreps.com 2020 Prediction: 4-6 overall, 2-3 district

WEEK-BY-WEEK

Week 1: Friday, August 21st, Time 7:00pm
-at Artesia High School (Artesia, NM) *Eddy County Rivalry

Score Prediction:
Loss, 35-34. The Cavemen are on the winning side of this rivalry taking the last two meetings. The Bulldogs won four straight before that and now both enter 2020 with some uncertainty. Cavemen team was senior led and could take a small step back on the road.

Record: 0-1 overall, 0-0 district. Game Type: Coin Flip.

Week 2: Friday, August 28th, Time 7:00pm
-vs Goddard High School (Roswell, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss 18-14. Could the Cavemen drop two games in a row to start the season? C'mon they are coming off their best season under coach Gary Bradley. 2019 and 2018 for the matter were good years but the wave of talent they had those two years they should have won and maybe gone further. Projecting a step back.

Record: 0-2 overall, 0-0 district. Game Type: Coin Flip.

Week 3: Friday, September 4th
-vs Volcano Vista High School (Albuquerque, NM) *Homecoming

Score Prediction:
Win, 28-24. We are all over the map with Carlsbad right now. Volcano Vista will be going through a transition too. Maybe they get one at home on homecoming night.

Record: 1-2 overall, 0-0 district. Game Type: Coin Flip.

Week 4: Friday, September 11th
-at EP-Coronado High School (El Paso, TX)

Score Prediction:
Win, 26-20. Can they make it two years in a row against El Paso-Coronado? They'll have to make sure that solid defense continues to lead.

Record: 2-2 overall, 0-0 district. Game Type: Coin Flip.

Week 4: Friday, September 18th
-at Roswell High School (Roswell, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 40-14. The two-time defending champs in 5A will be tough again. They'll have control early in this one.

Record: 2-3 overall, 0-0 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 6: Friday, October 2nd
-vs Las Cruces High School (Las Cruces, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 38-18. The good news is they open district play at home. The bad news is this could be serious state championship contender.

Record: 2-4 overall, 0-1 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 7: Friday, October 9th
-vs Centennial High School (Las Cruces, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 26-15. The good news in this one is that Centennial could be in a mini-rebuild for the first time since the doors opened. Don't hold your breath though as Ocampo teams stay in the top.

Record: 2-5 overall, 0-2 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 8: Friday, October 16th
-at Gadsden High School (Anthony, NM)

Score Prediction:
Win, 34-14. Trap game of the year? Gadsden is on a good path and might still be a year or two away but they'll be on the verge of upsetting someone.

Record: 3-5 overall, 1-2 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 9: Saturday, October 24th
-at Onate High School (Las Cruces, NM)

Score Prediction:
Win, 35-10. Back-to-back road trips west. Onate will still be in a building phase under their second year head coach.

Record: 4-5 overall, 2-2 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 10: Saturday, October 30th
-vs Hobbs High School (Hobbs, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 33-22. Hobbs will be much improved and will have some key pieces returning this coming season under second year head coach. They should have the edge going into the season but one we will re-evaluate.

Record: 4-6 overall, 2-3 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Top Returning Offensive Teams in 2020

Top Returning Offensive Teams in 2020
Grine | NMPreps

We had some high scoring teams in 2019. Today, we discuss some of the teams that will bring back some of the top talent on the offensive side of the ball.

CLEVELAND STORM

Class: 6A
Point For: 511
Average: 39.3 ppg
Rank 2019 Total (6A): 2nd
Record: 11-2 overall (State Champ)

Returning: Jeff Davison (QB/2021), 1169 passing yards, 12 touchdowns; Trey Ortega (ATH/2021), 346 rushing yards, 143 receiving yards, 8 touchdowns; Luke Wysong (WR/2021), 525 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns; Trevon Dennard (WR/2021), 385 receiving yards, 6 touchdowns

Quick Note: New Mexico Mr. Football, Dorian Lewis has graduated but the Storm remain one of the top offensive teams in 2020 with the core returning players that include University of New Mexico commit Luke Wysong (2021). Davison better get the arm ready this offseason because I have a feeling with the amount of weapons the Storm have they are going to toss it around like 500.

FARMINGTON SCORPIONS

Class: 5A
Points For: 461
Average: 41.9 ppg
Rank 2019 Total (5A): 4th
Record: 9-2 overall (Quarterfinals)

Returning: Caleb Carrillo (QB/2021) - 2,992 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, 519 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns; Chance Carrillo (WR/2022) - 810 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns; Macen Alley (WR/2021) - 509 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns; Peyton Halliburton (WR/2021) - 362 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns; Max Montoya (WR/2021) - 351 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns.

Quick Note: Farmington has the numbers returning and the core of the roster has a year of experience. The ceiling is very high for the Scorpions and the headline is the Carrillo-Carrillo connection.

GRANTS PIRATES

Class: 4A
Points For: 546
Average: 45.5
Rank 2019 Total (4A): 2nd
Record: 10-2 overall (Semifinals)

Returning: Brandon Furbee (QB/2022) - 1,597 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns; TJ Hocker (RB/2021) - 533 rushing yards, 6 rushing touchdowns, 336 receiving yards, 5 receiving touchdowns; Bryan Hernandez (2021/WR-ATH) - 122 passing yards, 3 receiving touchdowns.

Quick Note: The Pirates reached the semifinals last season and a few plays short of playing for the state championship. They lose Isaiah Johnson at RB but the athletes returning have some spark to them. If you look at the rest of the top scoring offenses from last season, the Pirates return more of their skill position players. Maybe not much of a drop off from 2019 as expected?

NMPreps.com will continue to update the list of the top offenses returning for the 2020 New Mexico high school football season.

Below you will find the complete breakdown, score prediction and best/worst case for the 2020 Atrisco Heritage Jaguars

The good news: Atrisco could pull off 4-wins and for this program would be a huge improvement. They made a quality hire this off-season and that is a win in the books already. They were young last season and could surprise a team or two.

NMPreps.com 2020 Prediction: 1-9 overall, 0-5 district

WEEK-BY-WEEK

Week 1: Friday, August 21st, Time 7:00pm
-at Del Norte High School (Albuquerque, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 28-15. The battle of first-year and newly hired head coaches Bowl. The opener for new head coach Howard Knezevich (also for Del Norte head coach Bruce Langston). Knezevich takes over an AHA team that went 1-9 overall last season. Del Norte has a few more weapons returning, although AHA was young last season and could be 'alright' in 2020.

Record: 0-1 overall, 0-0 district. Game Type: Coin Flip.

Week 2: Saturday, August 29th, Time 1:00pm
-at Rio Grande High School (Albuquerque, NM)

Score Prediction:
Win, 15-12. A favorable two opening games for the Jaguars in 2020. The Rio Grande Ravens had a good 2019 season, in terms of getting some wins however, I think they lose a solid group. Look for Knezevich to get his first win here.

Record: 1-1 overall, 0-0 district. Game Type: Coin Flip.

Week 3: Friday, September 4th Time 7:00pm
-vs Piedra Vista High School (Farmington, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 44-8. The first game against a team from a team in a higher tier and the Panthers, a team that could challenge for a deep playoff run will be much to handle.

Record: 1-2 overall, 0-0 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 4: Thursday, September 10th Time 7:00pm
-vs Valley High School (Albuquerque, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 20-13. The Jaguars have a chance at being 3-1, in the best case scenario. However, the Valley Vikings, coming off a miserable winless season should rebound in 2020. Giving the edge to Valley on the sole reason that they return from the bottom with some experience now.

Record: 1-3 overall, 0-0 district. Game Type: Coin Flip.

Week 5: Saturday, September 19th Time 1:00pm
-at Centennial High School (Las Cruces, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 56-6. The first big road trip for the Jaguars this season as they head to Centennial. The issue, although Centennial graduates some of their go-to guys from last season, are still a tier or two ahead of the Jaguars.

Record: 1-4 overall, 0-0 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 6: Saturday, October 3rd Time 1:00pm

-vs Cleveland High School (Rio Rancho, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 50-0. The district opener for the Atrisco Heritage Jaguars is no other than the defending 6A state champ Cleveland Storm. This one, like last week, looks to end early due to the mercy rule.

Record: 1-5 overall, 0-1 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 7: Friday, October 9th Time 7:00pm
-at Volcano Vista High School (Albuquerque, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 57-7. Not much changes here for the Jaguars as they battle another top tier team in the classification. This district does no favors for the Jaguars.

Record: 1-6 overall, 0-2 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 8: Friday, October 16th Time 7:00pm
-vs Rio Rancho High School (Rio Rancho, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 48-12. The Jaguars could rattle off some scores after a few rough weeks. The Rams are going to be real good again but maybe Knezevich rattles off a couple scores against his former team.

Record: 1-7 overall, 0-3 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 9: Friday, October 23rd Time 7:00pm
-at Cibola High School (Albuquerque, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 44-6. Cibola will be one to watch this coming season and their roster that has a chance to be real good in the next two or three years. Unfortunately for the Jaguars it means they could drop this one by a wide margin, again.

Record: 1-8 overall, 0-4 district. Game Type: Underdog.

Week 10: Friday, October 30th Time 7:00pm
-vs West Mesa High School (Albuquerque, NM)

Score Prediction:
Loss, 14-13. This one falls in the best case scenario again for the Jaguars, and AHA won last season to end the year with a dub. However, I give the nod to West Mesa, that will be improved this season.

Record: 1-9 overall, 0-5 district. Game Type: Coin Flip
