Week 4: New Mexico High School Basketball Rankings

NMPREPS.COM'S WEEK 4 RANKINGS

5A BASKETBALL

1. Cleveland (5-0) --
2. Las Cruces (8-0) +2
3. Atrisco Heritage (5-1) --
4. Eldorado (5-1) -2
5. Rio Rancho (4-1) --
6. Volcano Vista (3-1) --
7. Santa Fe (7-1) --
8. Roswell (6-2) +1
9. Onate (5-3) New
10. Capital (5-2) --
11. Clovis (3-3) -3
12. Manzano (4-2) New

Dropped: West Mesa (11), Hobbs (12)

Scoop: The 5A Rankings this week left us with more unknown, unable to answer, out of the office type of answers. The Storm and Las Cruces Bulldawgs stay perfect. After that, who knows? Yes, Onate beat Eldorado but then dropped a contest right after. Staying true to our weekly rankings we did move them down and up (new) this week for both Eldorado and Onate but the gap was to wide. Manzano won the Joe Armijo and now enter the rankings.

4A BASKETBALL

1. Los Lunas (5-0)
2. Hope Christian (2-4)
3. Espanola Valley (5-5)
4. Bernalillo (4-2)
5. Grants (4-4)
6. Del Norte (5-1)
7. Artesia (4-2)
8. Gallup (2-2)
9. St. Pius X (3-4)
10. Silver (5-1)
11. Taos (5-1)
12 (tie) Highland (3-1)
Valley (4-2)

Scoop: A three team tango between Espanola Valley, Bernalillo and Grants. Grants beat Espanola, Bernalillo beat Grants on the road this week, and then Espanola Valley beat Bernalillo at the Cleveland Storm Tournament. Grants battled but fell to top ranked (5A) Las Cruces and Atrisco. Hope Christian "only" has two wins but the schedule carries weight for the Huskies. Del Norte the jump up this week after wins over Artesia and La Cueva. The cop-out this week is Highland and Valley; both lost to Gadsden this week.

3A BASKETBALL

1. St. Michael's (5-1)
2. West Las Vegas (3-1)
3. Sandia Prep (3-2)
4. Santa Fe Indian (1-3)
5. Navajo Prep (5-3)
6. Tularosa (4-2)
7. Wingate (3-2)
8. Hot Springs (6-2)
9. Bosque (5-3)
10. Thoreau (5-3)
11. Robertson (2-4)
12. Cuba (3-3)

Week Five - Thursday Outlet Pass

This week's Thursday Outlet Pass: Tournament Edition feature a few of the best games after Christmas. SENAI started before trash pickup and the food getting cold from Christmas day! The weekend will feature seven different tournaments across the state in Las Cruces, Hobbs, Roswell, Los Lunas, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe. Some impressive fields for 5A and 4A (barring most APS programs) across all the tournaments.

Hobbs Tournament
Kirtland Central vs. Bel Air (El Paso)
- Fresh off their win last week, the Lady Broncos look to start off the post-Christmas run in Hobbs where they'll look to impress. Standing in Kirtland Central's (7-2) way is 9-7 Bel Air out of El Paso. They're on the smaller end, but might give Kirtland Central some problems if they're able to knock down shots from the perimeter. I still like KC to open up with a win (and run to the tournament title game).

Village of Los Lunas Tournament
Gallup vs. Santa Fe - Neither team had quality outings in their recent games and that's including Gallup's two losses in less than a week. Not sure of the status of Taylor Salazar but if she's back maybe this could be a game. Gallup (5-2) loves their swarming defense though and this could go wrong if Santa Fe (4-5) can't handle the pressure.

Clovis Tournament
Volcano Vista vs. Randall (TX) - The youth of Volcano Vista (5-1) on a long road trip might sound worrisome in the past, but the talent of this bunch has so far shown bright. The Lady Hawks will be led by their freshmen core duo of Jaelyn Bates and Natalia Chavez. Randall might be sitting at .500 but they could be tougher than they look on paper. Still, most of the excitement again won't be seen until day two.

LCPS Tournament
Onate vs. Rio Rancho - Just off a weird loss at Farmington, Rio Rancho (5-2) look to bounce back with a first round win over local Onate (5-5). It'll be an interesting matchup as Onate has one of the best skilled center/forwards in Estrella Avalos. She'll be helped by an undersized but quick guard in Angel Jones and perimeter scoring Sydney Hobbs. Rio Rancho will likely turn again to the guard rotation which will heavily feature Laura Gutierrez, Julia Chavez, and fast freshman Kelsie Hawkins.

Goddard Tournament
Goddard vs. Crownpoint - Since 2009, Crownpoint has only had ONE season where they had MORE than five wins. Right now they're sitting at 4-2, one of the best starts yet and they've got some fair wins for their division. I ALMOST want to put Goddard (6-3) on upset watch, but the Lady Rockets are FAR too good to be upset by this Crownpoint team. Bailey Beene and PJ Villareal would likely combine for 100 points before losing in first round of their own tournament to Crownpoint.

St. Michael's Tournament
Sandia Prep vs. Taos - This will feature a Sandia Prep (2-2) with only four games into the season while Taos (1-6) will be in their eighth game so far. Both teams looking to gain some momentum towards the right side of .500 and a playoff appearance in both their respective classes. Taos needs this win to get back on a winning track, while Sandia Prep looks to reboot a layover with this tournament before hosting their own tourney next week.

SENAI Tournament (Day Two)
Mescalero Apache vs. Navajo Prep - In the large school bracket (Turtle), the semifinal matchup of 2A Mescalero (6-1) and 3A Navajo Prep (4-3) looks too good to miss. From nearly the opposite sides of the state, both teams need a win against a potential district champion and each are contenders. Prep will look to go inside to Aiona Johnson, a transfer from Shiprock. Mescalero will continue their offense through 5'6" junior star Fallon Velasquez.
