Ohio Team

I am at a loss for words reading this story. I’m sure some of you have seen it already but this was my first. It’s still amazing to think that we have places like this in this country that think this would be okay.

A 12-year old team with nicknames on their jerseys that said - Coon and Knee Grow...

Goldilocks of HS Hoops

Think about your preseason projections. Is your team Over Performing, Under Performing, or Just Right.

I'l go with 4 northern schools, given I've watched these guys the most.

Santa Fe - Just Right. Looking to be a state tourney team in back to back seasons for the first time in a long time.

Capital - Just Right. I had them 3 in my preseason predictions which is where they are heading into district.

St Mike's - Under Performing. Looking at the district schedule, the Horsemen will be hard pressed to find 10 wins on the season.

Española - Just Right, slightly over performing. This team is senior heavy with plenty of contributors from the State Championship team of 2 years ago. Preseason i had the Sun Devils at 2, they are the best in the State so far, but feom 2 there not much room to go up. Branch walked into a loaded team that he is very familiar with. Being senior heavy, this is a perfect shot at taking it all.

Notre Dame DC leaves for A&M

Mike Elko leaves ND for Texas A&M.

Personally, I am bummed by the move. Coach Elko took what was a terrible defense in 2016 and made it one of the top turnarounds in 2017. Granted most players were healthy and a very veteran unit but it was improved on the calling. Makes more reason for me to hate Jimbo Fisher (yup I said it).

Mike Elston (DL coach) who has been with Coach Kelly since 2004. He was also the assistant head coach at Cincy.

Kevin Kane (Northern Illinois DC) - Young guy that coaches at one of the best non-power 5 schools. At 34 could be a solid coach to grab now. However, the ND defense will be young next season and might need to lean on a veteran defensive coach.

Anthony Campanile (Boston College) - Another young guy at 35, will be another up and coming coach.

Week 10: Saturday Guide

Resume-Bubble Game: Alamogordo (5-11) at Valencia (7-10). (2pm) Alamogordo likely gets in with DC. Valencia has a couple quality wins but still finds itself on the bubble. Should be okay but a win gets them a better seed.

Resume-Bubble Game: Artesia (10-5) at Del Norte (5-10). (2:30) Artesia should be fine in this situation and will get in. However, they can't afford another loss to a bottom half 2-5A team. Del Norte is on the OUT bubble after coming into the season with hype after their magical Final Four run in 2017.

District Opponent but No a District Game: Taos (8-9) vs West Las Vegas (9-8). (3:30) The third place game at the Hope Tournament today.

Resume Game: Lovington (8-8) at Los Alamos (9-7). (2:30pm). We've had a 2-5A vs 4-4A challenge this week. Lovington and Los Alamos will battle and we can start to find out where teams are in the bracket talk.

Steal One on Saturday?: Silver (11-4) vs Portales (9-6). (5:30pm). Silver is in the top-3 of the classification. Portales is coming off a surprising loss to St. Mikes. Portales could use a steal on Saturday but the order will be tall.

More

Intrigued: Belen (12-5) at Gallup (9-6)
4A Resume: St. Mikes (6-10) vs Santa Fe Indian (8-8)
Cloudy Middle Tier: Manzano (8-5) at Volcano Vista (9-5)
Worth the Watch: Espanola Valley (15-0) at Rio Rancho (9-8)
Nice East Game: Estancia (11-0) at Santa Rosa (8-5)
5A Upset Watch: Kirtland Central (8-7) at Grants (8-7)
Quality: St. Pius X (9-5) at Farmington (5-10)

Week 10: Quick Takeaways From Friday Night

Week 10: Quick Takeaways From Friday Night
J Grine

Note: Sorry if you had problems last night with the site going down for maintenance. I could login either but up and going today.

Friday Takeaways
Life Support:
Los Alamos gets a win over Artesia, 70-62 and is brought back to life. They have a couple intriguing wins and they are one of the teams that floats up and down the 8-16 range. St. Mikes also earned a big win last night over Portales, 67-65. These two games helped the teams in need. Artesia and Portales also take a small hit but adds to the uncertainties after top 3 teams in each classification.

Under-the-Radar Team: La Cueva beating Albuquerque, 89-87 at home on Friday night. The Bears have one of the better, under the radar wins in the state. They are playing well and could be the team that floats around and gets a 5-seed - maybe plays for a DC. Eldorado-LC rivalry finally back? It makes basketball in NM better if so.

The Divide Is Real (4A): Silver beat Santa Fe Indian, 60-40 on Friday night and, like in 5A, proved we have a divide. In 4A it's Hope, Silver, and Bernalillo - in that order - and then we have a cloudy 4-16. Santa Fe Indian could be more in the 4-8 range though but didn't help with Portales falling on Friday.

Top Performances From Friday
Johnny Nitifan - Hope - 25 points vs Taos
Isaiah Dockery - Hope - 22 points vs Taos
Brandon Mahoney - Mayfield - 20 points vs Centennial.
Rayshad Brown - Las Cruces - 16 points vs Carlsbad.
Sal Navarez - Las Cruces - 14 points vs Carlsbad.
Collin Evans - Hope - 12 points vs Taos
Chris Ward - Hope - 11 points vs Taos
