NMAA Board Summary
September 20, 2017
The New Mexico Activities Association’s Board of Directors met in regular session on Wednesday, September 20thin the NMAA Hall of Pride and Honor.
Executive Director Sally Marquezgave her Director's Report which included informationon a successful start to the 2017-2018 school year, an announcement that Tammy Richards was hired to the NMAA staff, and a brief report on the NFHS Section 6 Meetings held in mid-September.
Business Manager Shari Kessler-Schwaner presented the NMAA Financial Report which included information from all state championships that occurred during 2016-2017 and an overview of ticket sales from these events. Debbie Saunders of Saunders & Associates then presented the Annual Audit Report for the previous fiscal year.
Deputy Director Dana Pappas presented the NMAA Activities Report which included informationon the National Student Leadership Summit, the creation of an NMAA State Student Leadership Summit, the September Activities Council Meeting, a report that Activity participation numbers have increased, an update with regards to the NMAA Student Leadership Advisory Committee, and a report on the current state of Orchestra as an NMAA sanctioned Activity.
Ms. Pappas presented the NM Officials Association Report which included information on summer basketball camps, the newly formatted NMOA State Clinic, a report from the July Executive Board Meeting, the 2017 NASO Summit, the Referee Educational Forum for basketball officials, a newly created Basketball Symposium for coaches & officials, and the Battlefields to Ballfields program for military veterans.
Logan Schools Superintendent Dennis Roch presented information regarding the Ute Lake Online Learning Center and its impact on Logan High School’s enrollment numbers for classification purposes.
David Osuna presented information regarding the positive progress the NMAA & NMOA have made with basketball officiating in the areas of leadership, training, evaluations, and state tournament selections.
Santa Fe Indian School Superintendent Roy Herrera and representatives presented several items to the Board of Directors for discussion. These included an introduction and brief background of the school and concerns about the multiplier and how it is applied to SFIS’ enrollment numbers because of its designation as a boarding school.
Ms. Marquez then presented two discussion items which included the eligibility of students within the IB Program at Sandia High School and an update on the work that has been done by the NMAA’s recently created scholastic eligibility committee.
Assistant Director Scott Owen presented a discussion item which included information on AEDs & EAPs at NMAA State Championship sites.
The Board of Directors took action on the following items.
-Voted in favor of a proposal to amend NMAA Bylaws pertaining to the date/procedures for seeding of the State Wrestling Championships (Bylaw 7.24.5.C & D)
-Voted in favor of a proposal to amend current classification & alignment rules for the sport of Wrestling which now designates it as a team sport. (Bylaw 4.1.3.D &E).
-Voted to keep District Tournaments in the sports of volleyball & basketball.
-Voted to approve the following regarding the number of classes by sport for the
2018-2019/2019-2020block.
