NMPreps 2023 New Mexico Offensive Lineman of the Year Finalists

Today, NMPreps.com and Rivals are delighted to unveil the recipient of the 2023 New Mexico Offensive Linemen of the Year Award. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon the top offensive linemen in New Mexico high school football for the given season, recognizing their exceptional contributions to the success of their teams.

After a meticulous selection process involving nominations from coaches, fans, and media members, along with the evaluation by the NMPreps staff, we are proud to present this year's standout offensive linemen:

Enrique Armendariz (Artesia HS, 2024): Instrumental to the Artesia offensive line, Armendariz played a crucial role in guiding the Bulldogs to the 2023 5A state championship.

Ezra Hensley (Deming HS, 2025): The Deming Wildcats reached their second consecutive 5A semifinal, thanks in part to the stellar performance of Hensley on the offensive line.

Gabe Marquez (Cleveland HS, 2025): Marquez was a key player for the Cleveland Storm, contributing to their successful season that culminated in another appearance in the 6A state championship.

Isaac Garcia (Raton HS, 2024): As a senior, Garcia showcased his athleticism as an outstanding athlete for the Raton Tigers, who reached the 3A quarterfinals this season.

Mark Handy (La Cueva HS, 2025): Handy stood out as a star offensive lineman for the 6A state champion La Cueva Bears. Despite being a junior, he is already attracting attention with numerous Division-I offers.

Naiki Tso (Bloomfield HS, 2024): Tso, a senior offensive lineman, earned his nomination after guiding the Bloomfield Bobcats to a 1-seed in the 4A state playoffs.

Reeco Lujan (Roswell HS, 2024): Lujan, a senior offensive lineman, played a crucial role for the Roswell Coyotes, earning the 1-seed in the 5A state playoffs and competing in the state championship game, finishing the season with an impressive 12-1 record.

Valente Herrera (Lovington HS, 2025): A standout junior, Herrera made significant contributions to the Wildcats' journey to the 4A state championship.

Warren Schooley (Texico HS, 2025): Another rising star, Schooley, a junior offensive lineman, played a pivotal role in guiding the Texico Wolverines during the season.

Zach Markham (Volcano Vista HS, 2024): Markham, a 6-2 senior, is widely recognized as one of the top offensive linemen in New Mexico. His contributions were crucial to the success of the Volcano Vista Hawks.

2023 New Mexico Linebacker of the Year Finalists and Voting

NMPreps and Rivals are thrilled to present the ten finalists for the prestigious 2023 New Mexico Linebacker of the Year award. These exceptional athletes have demonstrated outstanding skills and commitment on the field, earning them a spot among the top contenders for this esteemed recognition. The final winner will be determined through a five-day voting process, with coaches, media members, and NMPreps staff participating in the selection.

Let's take a closer look at the impressive linebackers who have made it to the final round:

Andrew Gustafson (2024) - Rio Rancho HS
114 total tackles, 5.0 TFL, 72 solo tackles, 1 sack for the Rams this season.

Brody Whitaker (2024) - Albuquerque Academy
112 total tackles, 4 sacks, and 9 TFL for the Chargers this season, reaching the 4A quarterfinals.

Diego Wesson (2024) - Artesia HS
78 total tackles, 6 TFL, 2 sacks, contributing to Artesia Bulldogs' 2023 5A state championship.

John Sierra (2024) - Centennial HS
72 total tackles, 2 FF, 1 INT, 4.5 sacks, 20 TFLs, 2 FR. Offer from the University of New Mexico. Three-time all-state member for the Centennial Hawks.

Kyler Young (2024) - Los Alamos HS
150 total tackles, 12 TFL for the Los Alamos Hilltoppers, reaching the 5A quarterfinals.

Leon Sutulov (2024) - St. Pius X
82 total tackles, 28.5 TFL, and 15.5 sacks on the season, showcasing outstanding potential.

Manny Chavez (2025) - Portales HS
151 total tackles, 9 sacks, and 11.5 TFL for the Portales Rams, contributing to their journey to the state championship game.

Mason Posa (2025) - La Cueva HS
99 total tackles, guiding the Bears to the 2023 6A State Championship, 14 TFL, 7 sacks, and 1 interception.

Nicolas Chavez (2024) - Santa Rosa HS
Led the state in total tackles with 164 (109 assisted), 9 TFL, showcasing exceptional defensive prowess.

Stratton Shufelt (2024) - Cleveland HS
Named to the first team all-state for four consecutive years. Over 50 total tackles, 9 TFL, and 3.5 sacks. Played a key role in leading the Storm to the 2023 state championship game for class 6A, attracting several major D-1 offers.

The winner of the 2023 New Mexico Linebacker of the Year award will be announced at the culmination of the voting period, recognizing the exceptional contributions of one outstanding linebacker in New Mexico high school football.

  2. Clovis (4-1) at Albuquerque Academy (5-0), 6:30pm
    • Clovis, featuring one of their stronger teams in several years, faces a significant test against the top-ranked team in 4A basketball, Albuquerque Academy, who hosts the Joe Armijo Tournament.
  3. Highland (4-1) at Hope Christian (1-2), 11:30am

    • The Demons, a top-ranked team in 5A basketball, square off against the Horsemen, the defending 3A state champs, who have faced a minor struggle to start this season. The game takes place at Perez-Shelley gym.
  7. Valencia (4-2) at Artesia (2-1), 7pm
    • Valencia travels south to Artesia for a game that promises to provide a clearer picture of the 4A basketball landscape.

NMSU’s Fred Young’s sons to play against each other in Independence Bowl

Fred Young (NMSU-Seattle, Indianapolis) has two sons; Monroe at Cal and Matthew at Texas Tech that will play against each other at the Independence Bowl in Shrevport, La. this Saturday. Fred Jr. played for UNM. Proud to say we were teammates back in the early 80’s at NMSU.

All District and All State

Why is it that not all districts follow the same protocol for selecting players for All District and all state? I recently found out that in some districts, the first place team gets a set number and so forth down the line. Just seems to cheapen the process and the award. Example: 5 team district DC gets 5 all district places where last place team automatically gets just 1. Just seems odd to me. To top it off same for 2nd and HM
