Interesting Post

For those that don't know, Ron Black was the long-time men's basketball coach at NMJC in Hobbs. I ran across this post of his on Facebook today. Really interesting how things come together.

"I have watched the Hobbs Lady Eagles play three time in the last week. They are now 27-1 and ranked #1 in the state. Their only loss was to Carlsbad and Carlsbad has only lost three games all year, all to Hobbs. Hobbs is led by Junior Amaya Lewis. In 1991-92 the two starting guards for New Mexico Junior College were Pete Lewis of Hobbs and Greg Brown of Albuquerque High. They led NMJC to the championship of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. Pete went on to an outstanding career at the University of Oklahoma while Greg was the WAC Player of the Year and won the Naismith Award as the nation's best senior under 6' while playing at the University of New Mexico.
Today, their two daughters, Amaya Lewis of Hobbs and Amaya Brown of Albuquerque Cibola are probably the two best girl players in the state. Amaya Brown is injured this year but I would love to see Hobbs and Cibola in the state championship game next year."

Week 15 - 4A Bracket Watch

BRACKET

1. Hope Christian (Auto/DC)
2. Shiprock (Auto/DC)
3. Robertson (Auto/DC)

These top 3 seeds are fairly solid and shouldn't see any movement.

4. Moriarty (At-Large/DRUP)
5. Portales (At-Large/D3P)
6. West Las Vegas (At-Large/DRUP)
7. Silver (Auto/DC)

These 4 seeds however is where we could see some shuffling. Although I think Moriarty deserves the 4-seed, and Portales should follow with Member Input criteria points, anything could happen. For example, Silver actually has Moriarty beat 3-1 in the criteria points. West and Silver actually split 2-2 with the Member Input as the last point which I awarded to WLV. And Moriarty has West beat 3-1 in their point. However that 3-way standoff is settled, Portales would follow Moriarty, but because of their poor overall record, they actually ended up splitting 2-2 with Silver, Sandia Prep, and Wingate. West Las Vegas has Portales beat 3-2 without Member Input, but if Portales gets that point and ties it, Portales takes it with the H2H tiebreaker. I tried to avoid a mess and seed them with who I thought Member Input would best align them.

8. Wingate (At-Large/DRUP)
9. Sandia Prep (Auto/DC)

We could see these two teams swap places with Sandia Prep needing one more win to break free of the overall record tie with Wingate. Add point with Member Input and Sandia Prep could be hosting this one.

10. Socorro (At-Large/DRUP)
11. Hatch Valley (At-Large/D3P)
12. Navajo Prep (At-Large/D3P)
13. Pojoaque Valley (At-Large/D3P)

Pojoaque is a funny team to seed too. They could possibly jump as high as 8 or fall back as far as 13. But for most of these criteria matchups with Pojo it'll come down to the Member Input. In the case of Silver and Wingate, Pojoaque actually owns the H2H tiebreaker. If Pojoaque can get the point from Member Input, that'll force a 3-3 tie and the Elkettes will actually jump ahead of either of those teams. The only team that might force a 3-way tie here too is Sandia Prep, who own a 3-1 criteria point lead without Member Input against Pojoaque. Both teams split against the other, so it may come down to a Silver-Pojoaque-Sandia Prep resume breakdown from the seeding and selection committee.

14. St. Michael's (At-Large/D4P)
15. Santa Fe Indian (At-Large/DRUP)
16. Taos (At-Large/D5P)

Last note, Cobre is definitely on the outside looking in, but they're actually tied 2-2 with Taos without Member Input. It's a longshot for Cobre, but not impossible.

A Tale of Two Cities (and styles)

So in the past 2 years we have seen the rivalry between Capital and Espanola reach heights that may be unmatched in the almost 30 years of existence. The schools have similar backgrounds... Mostly impoverished student bodies from hard working family's that take a great pride in their communities, and especially basketball. Capital grew as a program facing the Coach Brown juggernaut Academy teams, and found major success in the early and mid 2000's with the promotion of Ben Gomez. Espanola, while always prideful, never had much success but always played with a chip on their shoulder. Enter the hiring of Richard Martinez and the rivalry was really born. Espanola kid transfers to Capital, Jags win a State Title and make the finals 3 times in 4 years... A Santa Fe kid leads Espanola to their first State Title, taking out Capital on the way in the Quarters by 2, and cements the Sundevil's place in Northern New Mexico Hoops hierarchy.

What has struck me as odd, is that with all that parallels these two programs, we see 2 completely different styles of play. On offense. Defensively both teams get after you, but on O its a Tale of Two Cities.

In the past 2 years Capital and Espanola have played each other 8 times. Tonight's District Tournament Championship will be numero 9, and break a 4-4 tie. The game results have broken down as follows:
Capital 54 Espanola 44
Espanola 54 Capital 50
Capital 60 Espanola 58
Capital 72 Espanola 56
Espanola 36 Capital 34
Espanola 40 Capital 39
Espanola 50 Capital 47
Capital 55 Espanola 48

In Espanola's 4 wins they have outscored the Jags by a total of 7 points. In Capital's 4 wins the point differential is 35 total points. Pace of play is the determining factor in the rivalry. Espanola's average score in wins is 44.25 and 51.5 in their losses. Capital's averages are 60.75 in wins and 42.5 in losses.

I think the number to watch tonight is 50. If Capital gets to 50 they win. If the score is in the 40's, advantage Sundevils.

What other rivalries are out there that may qualify as a Tale of Two Cities?

A little down time before I take a shot at some boys hoops bracket predictions, but for those curious about 3A girls hoops here's my predictions.

1. Eunice (Auto/DC)
2. Tohatchi (Auto/DC)
3. Texico (Auto/DC)
4. Laguna-Acoma (Auto/DC)
5. Tularosa (At-Large/DRUP)
6. Tucumcari (At-Large/DRUP)
7. Cuba (At-Large/DRUP)
8. Dulce (Auto/DC)
9. Pecos (Auto/DC)
10. McCurdy (At-Large/DRUP)
11. Raton (At-Large/DRUP)
12. Loving (At-Large/D3P)
13. Tierra Encantada (At-Large/D3P)
14. Dexter (At-Large/D4P)
15. Clayton (At-Large/D3P)
16. Capitan (At-Large/D5P)

Quick note, the top 3 seeds could shuffle a bit with Texico having a case for the number one overall seed. But I think it'll play out something like this with Tohatchi or Texico at the 2-seed. Laguna-Acoma is my surprise push at the 4-seed, but you could make the case for Tulie as well. I think the furthest back LA could fall is 6th and that's if Tucumcari can get the Member Input to push ahead of LA. Tulie has the points to stay ahead of Tucumcari and should remain in the 3 to 5-seed area.
