Thoughts on soccer officiating in NM?

This article (https://www.abqjournal.com/852452/nmaa-has-a-severe-shortage-of-officials.html) is mostly about football, but touches on soccer officiating as well.

Does soccer have the same problems with the quality of officials that apparently plague football and basketball?

My opinion: soccer officiating in NM (at least in the metro area), is actually pretty good, maybe because soccer is generally easier to officiate than those other sports. There is certainly inconsistency in how games are called, but I rarely feel that the officials affect a game's outcome. Some linesmen are either too out of shape or just don't hustle enough to be in the right position to make offside calls. But generally it's not bad.

I also don't think abuse from coaches or parents is a huge problem in soccer in New Mexico, although I was at a game not long ago in which Rio Rancho's parents pretty much rode the center referee the whole game.

KRQE: New Mexico faces serious shortage of sports officials

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The job comes with plenty of exercise, dodging some scary hits, and you have to be on your toes at all times. Not everyone will agree with you, and some nasty words could fly your way, too.

If you’re interested in becoming a referee, the demand is high in New Mexico.

Under the Friday night lights, donning the familiar black and white stripes, and getting as close as you can to the gridiron action are the officials who watch every play.

Josh Foley and the Rams

Josh Foley finished last night with the following:
20 carries for 204 yards rushing
6 catches for 70 yards
3 TD's
He didn't play the 4th quarter and I have to say the Manzano team isn't that bad, very athletic and solid on defense. Finally these numbers are getting put up when everyone is preparing to stop the run! One of the big differences is Nic Little at QB, he can run the hall as well as throw it on the run. Finally the defense is NASTY! They are really good and help the offense in great field position.

Key boys' games for week of Sept. 19.

Tuesday:
Roswell (7-1) at Alamogordo (9-2-2). Two 5A contenders from the south. Alamo seeks revenge for their 2-0 loss at Roswell a week ago.

Belen (7-2-1) at Valencia (8-2). District play starts for these two teams. Their records are good – but is either really a threat to do damage at state? Is anyone in this district good enough to earn a first-round bye?

Rio Rancho (6-5) at Academy (7-2-1). Rio Rancho looked like a title contender when the season started but has been inconsistent and doesn’t have a signature win over a metro team (although they are the only team to have beaten Capital). Really tough five-day stretch for the Rams: @ Academy, then home for Volcano Vista, then @ No. 1 Cleveland.

Hobbs (8-2) at Onate (5-5-1). It’s road-trip week for Hobbs – the Eagles played at Gadsden on Saturday, and now to LC for this game. After losing to Gadsden, Hobbs needs a win here to keep pace in the district.

Thursday:
Volcano Vista (4-3-1) at Rio Rancho; Cleveland (11-1) at Cibola (4-3). District 1-6A starts up – this should be a very competitive race.

Albuquerque High (5-1-2) at Valley (5-2-1). Right now AHS looks like the class of this district, but Valley could make things interesting with a win here.

Friday:
Roswell at Los Alamos (9-3). This is the second of two non-district road games this week for Roswell with state seeding implications (not including their game at Sandia Prep on Saturday).

La Cueva (5-2) at St. Pius (3-4). St. Pius hasn’t yet proven that they are capable of making a state tournament run – this make-up game will be their biggest test of the season. Will La Cueva play at full strength for the whole game or rest some players for their district game the next morning at Santa Fe?

Saturday:
Sandia (6-0-2) at Eldorado (3-4-1). Looks like a down year for the Eagles, although they did beat Rio Rancho last week. Are they a district title contender? Right now, they aren’t even a lock to make the state tournament.

Rio Rancho at Cleveland.

Roswell at Sandia Prep.
