Feature: Cougars Chasing The Final Four
Joshua J Grine

The NMAA made the decision to move the format of the state tournament to 16 teams in 2006 (2005-2006 season) and since the switch the Cougars have yet to make it to the Final Four. We consider this the Modern Format at NMPreps.com.

Four times the Cibola High School Cougars have been a Top-8 seed and all four times they haven't won past the Elite Eight (second round). One time the blow and heartache was a loss as a 4-seed in the first round to 13-seed Manzano in 2012 (47-43 score).

Top-8 History
2013: (8-seed) Lost Elite Eight
2012: (4-seed) Lost First Round.
2011: (8-seed) Lost First Round.
2008: (8-seed) Lost Elite Eight.

As we are coming to the end of another crazy season, mostly unpredictable, Cibola looks to be on the verge of another Top-8 seed - as high as 2 but not as far down as 5. The Cougars are 20-5 on the season with all of their losses coming to teams ranked in the Week 15 NMPreps.com Top-25. Three of them coming to Cleveland who is ranked #2 in 6A basketball.

So why should we pick the Cougars again?

This Cougar team is a bit different from some of the best Cibola teams (my favorite in 2002/2003 with Jude Roybal, Alan Branch and MoHamm). They are one of the better three point shooting teams in the state, have a guard that has basketball in his veins - Desmond Carpenter - along with a post who is under valued in Isaac Moldanado.

Resume/Criteria
Record: 20-5
District Finish: Co-Champion (6-2 Record)
Key Wins: at Cleveland, at Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Hpoe Christian, Gadsden
Wins against DC's: Hope Christian, Sandia
6A Rankings: NMPreps.com #3 | Freeman #2

Grine: 10 Questions Going Into The Seeding Meeting

Grine: 10 Questions Going Into The Seeding Meeting
Joshua J Grine

The day is here when the teams find their fate for the 2016 State Tournament in New Mexico. Who is hosting a game, who hits the road and who packs it in. Unlike most years the bubble is alive and well this season and the NMAA has the hardest of conflicts this season.

1. How much weight will the input form play into the seeds? We took a look at our predictions and their is room for teams to jump others with the last criteria being the input form. Some examples - 5A number 1, Sandia a home game, Eldorado over Santa Fe for the last spot.

2. Who is number one in 5A? Grants or Roswell get the nod. Grants has more wins against DC's. Roswell the ranking but the win-losses nearly the same. Who has the better losses?

3. Melrose...Mora? and then who gets the third spot? We have the defending state champ Magdalena Steers but maybe Escalante could make a case, so could Gateway Christian.

4. Top-8 in 2A is also a mess. Home game anyone? Menaul a DC, Dora and Logan the "better" teams from a better district or another. Fort Sumner and Mesa Vista are sexy picks for Top-8 but likely will get one.

5. Triangle in 1A. Cliff at 1? What about Hondo? Maybe Springer? We put Cliff but maybe feel Hondo should get the nod and might be the pick. Plenty of questions.

6. Pecos or Texico at 2? Should Tucumcari be there? All three are suitable teams for the 2-seed but Pecos might get the nod with a resume.

7. Bloomfield and Kirtland in the Top-8 or maybe Sandia Prep should jump one? All three lost before they should have in the district tournament so they lose that argument. Bloomfield an outright DC but do we go KC or SP?

8. Cobre or Ruidoso at 16? Cobre the ranking but Ruidoso who played well in the Tournament last night. I think the DRU should get the nod but Cobre might have done more.

9. Centennial, Gallup or St. Pius X? At one point we seen them in the Top-4. Now maybe one hits the road for a first round game. We think Cetennial and Pius have the better resume yet Gallup has some fuel in the debate.

10. 6A - Santa Fe or Eldorado? Rio Grande, Gadsden or Hobbs...Odd man out? Santa Fe should get the nod with wins over VV and Rio Rancho. Gadsden a DRU but Rio Grande maybe the better schedule. Hobbs a CO-DC over the other two?
