2PM - 3A: Lordsburg (24-1) vs Mesilla Valley (15-11): at 24-1 on the season the Mavericks are the favorite to win the state title. Behind Jacob Esquivel and company will look to add a district tournament championship first.

6PM - 4A: Wingate (14-13) at Shiprock (16-12): If you are planning to go to this game, you're to late as they likely have been in line since yesterday. No one expected to see both the 1-2 seeds go down but both (3) Shiprock and (4) Wingate made that happen.
Prediction: Shiprock by 4

6PM - 3A: Santa Rosa at Tucumcari: This will be the fourth time these two square off, expect this to be one of the best games in the state tonight. To evenly matched teams that will by a close one.

3PM: Dulce vs Pecos: Taking Pecos
6PM: Hagerman vs Gateway Christian: Taking GC.
6PM: Estancia at Laguna-Acoma: Taking LA.
6PM: Escalante at Mora: Mora but almost went with Escalante.

President of Texas HS coaches association writes letter saying IMG Academy “could destroy our profes



SEC commissioner Greg Sankey isn’t the only high-level executive in football unhappy with IMG Academy’s presence. Brenham (Texas) head coach Glen West, who serves as president of the Texas High School Coaches Association, wrote a letter to his peers in Texas Coach magazine railing against the academy, saying it could “destroy our profession.”

“As president of THSCA, I would like to make you aware of a growing movement that I feel can destroy our profession as we know it,” West writes. “At the current moment, IMG Academy has actively recruited three of our top Texas high school football players to play their senior season for their traveling football team. The reason given for these young athletes to attend this academy is to better prepare for the next level of competition. I adamantly disagree with that reasoning. With every fiber of my body, I feel that the best people to prepare them for the next level are YOU, the COACHES IN THIS STATE. It is my opinion these athletes were cherry picked to attend these academies to build their resumes. The intent is for other athletes with big dreams to also attend these academies for a large price. The paying athletes would attend hoping for the same opportunities as those that were recruited. You, as the coaches, can stand proud knowing that WE are in this business not to profit off of our athletes.”

Nightly Notes for Tuesday
Lovington stays alive with upset over Artesia. Lovington the last place seed in the tournament is also on the bubble (17th team in the latest bracketology) and could be playing their way IN with the win.

Santa Fe fought and battled but the loss could mean they are home this post season. They sit at 16 right now and need early exists from other hopeful bubble teams like Highland.

Dexter might of seen the bubble pop with a loss to Eunice in the district tournament. Cobre keeping their bubble hopes alive and need a win at Socorro to secure it. Miyamura loss to Piedra Vista ends their hopes.

State Wrestling Championship Recap

RIO RANCHO, NEW MEXICO- A school from Rio Rancho, New Mexico has now won the big school New Mexico State Wrestling Championship for for 9 consecutive years. On Saturday the Cleveland Storm claimed the Class 6A State Championship with a total of 204.5 points, second was Rio Rancho with 178.5 points, and in 3rd place was Manzano with 151.5 points.

In Class 5A the Belen Eagles won their first state wrestling championship since the 2008 season. The Eagles scored 272 points, Piedra Vista took second with 222.5 points, and in third was Capital with 197 points. Piedra Vista had entered the tournament having won 5 consecutive championships.

The Cobre Indians won Class 4A to claim their first wrestling state championship since 2005. The Indians scored 247.5 points, Bloomfield scored 190.0 points, and Silver finished in 3rd with 176.5 points.

Highlights

Deming’s Matthew Hernandez at 120 pounds finished the season 48-4 defeating Manzano’s Isidro Gacia in the finals. Las Cruces’ Dylan Udero at 132 pounds finished his senior season with a record of 39-2 defeating Rio Rancho’s Kyler Gonzales in the finals. Cobre’s Robert Rodriguez at 132 pounds finished 54-1 on the year and defeated Bloomfield’s Corbin Nelson in the championship round. Miyamura’s AJ Starkovich finished his senior season 47-1 with a win over Belen’s Lano Luna in the 152 pound championship.

Volcano Vista’s Richard Govea at 160 pounds upset Eldorado’s Gavin Davy 7-3 in the finals. La Cueva’s Kyle Snelling finished 45-1 on the year at 170 pounds and quickly pined West Mesa’s Robert Cote in the final match up.

Also at 170 pounds was Moriarty’s Allen Michel who finished 35-1 on the year and defeated Gunner Robinson in a very intense final. JD Robinson out of Bloomfield won the 4A 182 pound title beating Silver’s Paul Montoya in the finals. Manzano’s Carver Dumas at 195 pounds finished 44-1 on the year with an impressive victory over Sandia’s Mark Flores.

Rio Grande’s Mark Hussey finished 25-0 on the year and pinned Carlsbad’s Adrian Flaco in the finals. In the 6A 285 pound finals Rio Rancho’s Grant Hermanns who is committed to play football at Purdue defeated West Mesa’s Jon Martinez 2-0 and in 5A Valencia’s Issac Lewis won the 285 pound title defeating Academy’s Andrew Wilson 3-1. Lewis finished 35-1 on the year.

I'm sure most of you know that Coach Gunther has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer and will begin treatment next week. Besides your prayers the Gunther's will need held.
