Recap: Cleveland 59, Grants 56

RIO RANCHO, NM - Marcus Williams led the No. 9 Cleveland Storm (6-3) to a three point win over the No. 2 Grants Pirates on Monday night, 59-56. Williams faced off with another Top-10 player in Richie Lucero but it was Williams' 18-points that stood on out on the evening.

The contest started with the Pirates jumping out to an early lead (20-16) to end the first quarter. It was a combination of steals off of the press and Cleveland turnovers early in the contest.

Lucero finished with 13 points on the game. The rest of the Pirate trio followed suit with 15 points by junior shooting guard Matt Vail and 12 by Michael Chambers. The Pirates went into the half with a 31-28 lead but a controversial three point shot waved off a three that could have had the Pirates up 6 at the half.

Cleveland stormed their way to a 15-4 third quarter to take a lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Pirates only with 1-field goal in the third and Cleveland using a press of their own to create easy buckets on the other end.

The Pirates chipped away at the lead down 54-46 at the four minute mark using a 7-0 run from the four minute mark to a timeout at 1:09. Cleveland big man Adam Cook had 8 points in the second half and a handful of rebounds to keep the Storm out in front.

After four Cleveland free throws they found themselves at the line with :9 seconds remaining, up 58-56 but both fell short.

Pirates guard penetrated to the rim but missed a wide open lay up that would have tied the game.

Recruiting News Henderson: Top 60 Unsigned Seniors

Top 25 Unsigned Seniors
By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

Signing Day is now in sight and today we take a look at what I feel are the top unsigned seniors high school football prospects in the State of New Mexico. Consider this my big board aka which players I would draft if I would building a college team of uncommitted prospects today.

List of Committed Prospects Here

1. Noah Sweitzer, 6-1, 210, Linebacker, Eldorado
Has an amazing defensive highlight film, shoots gaps like a D1 linebacker, excellent speed. Already holds offers from: Adams State, Western State Colorado, Highlands, Eastern New Mexico, and Ft. Lewis

1781436.gif

2. Justin Houghtaling, 6-5, 185, Quarterback, Artesia
As a senior Justin threw for 3,375-yards and 36 touchdowns leading to the Bulldogs to a 12-1 record. Offered to play baseball at New Mexico and recently landed offer to play football at West Texas A&M

1781437.gif

3. Grant Hermanns, 6-7, 260, Offensive Tackle, Rio Rancho
Exceptional young man, eagle scout, yes sir, no sir type of a person. Offers from Washington State, New Mexico, and Nevada.

1781438.gif

4. Teton Saltes, 6-6, 250, Defensive End, Valley
Big time prospect that is still uncommitted, great athleticism and still very raw. Huge upside on him. Offers from: CAL, Iowa State, New Mexico, Oregon, San Diego State, Texas Tech, Washington, and Washington state

1781439.gif

5. Bradley Hatten, 6-6, 310, Defensive Tackle, Grants
Sleeper right here. His quickness and agility for someone his size makes me feel he is a D1 football player. No offers to play football at all, which is unreal.

1781441.gif

6. David Inman, 6-1, 180, Safety, Eldorado
Playmaker that shined on both sides for the football for Eldorado. No offers, but I could see him being a walk on guy and then starting a few years, he’s that good. Similar to Reece White from Cleveland that went on to have a great career at New Mexico. No offers at this point.

7. George Nino, 6-0, 310, Offensive Center, Centennial
If he was 6-foot-4, I would be projecting him as a D1 linemen, he has such great technique and is a 4-year starter for Centennial. Holds an offer from Eastern New Mexico.

8. Santos Taylor, 6-2, 285, Offensive Guard, Cleveland
If one guy is going to grab a late D1 offer it might the Taylor from Cleveland who we hear has been in contact with New Mexico State. Offers From: New Mexico Highlands, Western New Mexico, and Eastern New Mexico

9. Caleb Ortiz, 6-4, 220, Defensive End, Estancia
Watch his highlight film, this young man could start anywhere for any team in New Mexico, he is that talented. Holds an offer from Eastern, those coaches are praying no one finds out about him.

10. Idan Urrutia, 6-2, 210, Linebacker, West Mesa
Ran a 4.4 at the NMPreps Elite Combine this past summer. Great athleticism, can’t imagine the type of player he’ll be when he’s 20-years old. No offers.

11. Roope Henry, 6-4, 190, Linebacker, Cleveland
Holds an offer from Eastern New Mexico, but I think Henry could be a D1 guy that plays 3-years after a redshirt season. So much upside with this young man.

12. Josh Williams, 6-1, 190, Quarterback, Quarterback
Cannot believe that Williams hasn’t got a call to play football at the next level. Watch his film and keep an eye on his pocket presence, poise, touch, and running ability. No Offers.

13. Jeremiah Burke, 5-11, 190, Receiver, Silver
Ran a 4.4 at the NMPreps Elite Combine. Good size and I feel that after a few years within a college system, he’ll be a reliable member of the roster, could see him playing defense too. Holds an offer from Eastern New Mexico.

14. Cameron Burkley, 6-0, 275, Offensive Guard, Centennial
Wonderful feet for a linemen, very strong, coachable, great kid. 4-year starter at Centennial High School. Holds an offer from Eastern New Mexico.

15. Demetry Rodriguez, 6-1, 295, Defensive Tackle, Cleveland
Was injured most of the season with a knee injury, but played the last few games of the season. One of the best linemen you don’t know about. Reminds me of Abraham Holland who graduated from Cleveland, then went to play at New Mexico State.

16. Allan Rodriguez, 6-2, 180, Defensive Back, Volcano Vista
Check out his NMPreps Elite Combine Numbers: 4.39 pro-agility and a 9-feet-1 inch broad jump. Playmaker, just one of those guys who turns heads.

17. Dante Urrea, 5-11, 175, Defensive Back, Deming
Played quarterback, defensive back, and running back while in high school. Has an offer on the table from Eastern New Mexico.

18. Nick Mourning, 6-2, 245, Defensive End, Volcano Vista
Three year starter at Volcano Vista, member of the 1,500 pound club, good upside. No offers.

19. Noah Pierce, 6-4, 235, Tight End, Mayfield
Like his size and the ability he has to make the tough catch. A redshirt year and the weight room could turn him into a monster target. No Offers

20. Josh Barton, 6-4, 210, Tight End, Volcano Vista
Redshirt this young man and get him to 225, you should see him catch the football and the athleticism he has. No Offers

21. Jeremy Padilla, 5-11, 175, Running Back, Hobbs
Was a dangerous two-year player for the Hobbs Eagles at both running back and receiver. Get him the football and watch him make plays. No Offers.

22. Jerry Gurrola, 6-2, 210, Defensive End, Centennial
4-year starter at Centennial, good size, speed, and strength. Nose for the football. I could even see him playing outside linebacker in college.

23. Raymond Cole, 6-4, 280, Defensive Tackle, Albuquerque
Still raw, but has the make up to be a player at the next level after a few years within a program. Has an offer from Ft. Lewis.

24. Jimmy Gallegos, 5-9, 190, Defensive Back, Sandia
There are guys that make plays wherever you put them and Sandia’s Jimmy Gallegos is that guy. Coach Kevin Barker said Jimmy’s one of the best he’s ever coached. Offer from Eastern New Mexico.

25. Lukas Gutierrez, 5-foot-10, 190 pounds, Running Back, Goddard
Very strong runner, good field vision, would like to see what he could do getting 20-30 carries a game. No offers.

New Arena in Downtown Albuquerque

Albuquerque Business Weekly is reporting that he City of ABQ approved $5 million to convert the East exhibit hall of the Convention Center into a "retractable arena" that would seat 10,000. There's also plan to build a new parking structure.

There's no timeline on when this would happen, but assuming it would take two years or less, this could be an alternative to the Santa Ana Star Center for NMAA basketball, wrestling and volleyball.

Depending on the layout, it could be a great alternative to having events in an easier to access area,

Thoughts?

Week Four (Dec. 7th-12th): Road To The PIT Bracket Watch

Road To The PIT: Four Weeks In We Predict

This won't be as in depth as the last break down but we seed 1-16. Who is in and who is out after the first month of basketball is complete.

6A - The Bulldogs Are The Only Clear Seed

TOP

1. Albuquerque High vs 16 Mayfield
8. Sandia vs 9 Volcano Vista
5. Carlsbad vs 12 Gadsden
4. Onate vs 13 Cibola

BOTTOM
3. Valley vs 14 Las Crues
6. Hobbs vs 11 La Cueva
7. Rio Rancho 10 Rio Grande
2. Cleveland vs. 15 Eldorado

THE AUTOS
Cleveland (Projected District 1-6A Champ)
Sandia (Projected District 2-6A Champ)
Onate (Projected District 3-6A Champ)
Carlsbad (Projected District 4-6A Champ)
Albuquerque High (Projected 5-6A Champ)

THE AT-LARGE
3 - Valley; Currently ranked 2nd with resume win over Onate.
6-Hobbs; Ranked 5th right now. Still need some resume work as far as head to head. District runner up projection.
7-Rio Rancho; Get a home game with a decent resume and project runner up from a tough district.
9-Volcano Vista; Gave all DC home games and out of the At-Large teams they fall short of home game as a project third place in district.
10- Rio Grande: Head to head over La Cueva even as a third place finisher in district. Also, 5-6A stronger than 2-6A this year.
11-La Cueva; Projected runner up in 2-6A and quality resume. Valley win could help maybe get to 9 seed minus losses to Volcano Vista and Rio Grande.
12 Gadsden - Projected runner up in 3-6A.
13. Cibola - nice resume one of the better fourth place finishers.
14. Las Cruces - Projected fourth place team in district but weaker district than 1-6A.
15. Eldorado - Third place from 2-6A hurts this year.
16. Mayfield - Of the bubble this is a team that could steal a win over other top district finishers.

5A

AUTOS
1-5A: Gallup
2-5A: Capital
3-5A: Grants
4-5A: Roswell
5-5A: Centennial
Why: This is a powerful five that could all be seeded 1-5 and will have resumes to back it up. The true question in this bunch could be who is left standing for number one.

AT-LARGE/HOME GAMES
5- St. Pius X the highest at-large to get a top-5 seed. Maybe, argue them up to 4 but depends on 3-5A shake up with Grants.
7-Espanola Valley - Maybe get the 6-seed over Gallup with the head-to-head conversation. Gallup the nod as a projected DC and win over a potential DC in Rio Rancho.
8-Los Lunas - The best team and could have a better resume than Farmington by then. Four losses come against Top-10 teams in New Mexico regardless of classification.

SEED/BRACKET
1. Roswell vs. 16. Moriarty
8. Los Lunas vs 9. Farmington
5. St. Pius X vs 12. Belen
4. Centennial vs. 13. Goddard

3. Capital vs. 14. Miyamura
6. Gallup vs 11. Artesia
7. Espanola Valley vs. 10 Piedra Vista
2. Grants vs 15. Bernalillo

4A

1. Hope vs 16. Ruidoso
8. Robertson vs 9. Shiprock
5. Bloomfield vs. 12. Taos
4. Pojoaque Valley vs 13. Kirtland Central
3. Silver vs 14. Cobre
6. West Las Vegas vs 11. Sandia Prep
7. St. Mikes vs 10. Hatch Valley
2. Portales vs 15. Wingate

Why: Pojoaque and West may fall as this district is going to end in a tie somewhere with Robertson also being a team that could move up. Silver and Portales, for the most part, walk to a DC. More Portales as they won't be challenged in district. Bloomfield the favorite in 1-4A could sneak as the 5th team as a DC from a district that could get several dancing.

Week 6 Preview: Two Top-10 Teams Clash
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

Before the New Mexico High School basketball scene takes a break for the holidays we highlight the games that are still taking place this week.

BIG THREE FOR WEEK SIX: GAMES TO WATCH

No. 2 Grants at No. 9 Cleveland (Rio Rancho), 7 p.m., Monday

The No. 2 Grants Pirates (6-0) travel to Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho for the first meeting between the two programs. The 5A Pirates enter the week with the highest ranking in program history (NMPreps.com Top-25) and look to bring their talented roster for a win.

Anywhere you look in this game you have to like the match-up from the front court to the backcourt. First, in the front court we have, Bradley Hatten (6'6/Grants) vs Henry Hattis (6'7/Cleveland) and Richie Lucero (6'5/Grants) vs. Marcus Williams (6'5/Cleveland). To the backcourt we have Matt Vail/Michael Chambers (Grants) vs Marcus Gibson/Jayden Phillips (Cleveland).

Prediction: Grants 73, Cleveland 71

No. 10 Hobbs at Goddard (Roswell), 7 p.m., Tuesday

The No. 10 Hobbs Eagles (5-3) are still searching for their identity this season in which they graduated plenty from the 2015 title team. Leading scorer Jordaan Gonzales (15.9 ppg) will be the focus for the Eagles but they will look to the front court match up between Pierre Swain (Hobbs) and sophomore Dalton Stanford (Goddard to be the X-factor in the contest.

Prediction: Hobbs 70, Goddard 57

No. 13 Roswell at Alamogordo, 7p.m., Tuesday

Plenty of 6A vs 5A match up's this week and another 5A program enters as the favorite. The No. 13 Roswell Coyotes (6-1) suffer their first loss of the season two nights ago on Saturday and will be a dangerous team to play for the Tigers right now. Alamogordo (3-4) is currently on a three game losing streak and have been on the decline after a 2-0 start. Roswell's Daniel Armador will have every opportunity to go off in this contest as the Coyotes will be given the option to press and push the tempo on the Tigers who struggle against the pressure.

Prediction: Roswell 72, Alamogordo 50

Keep An Eye On

No. 12 Capital vs St. Michael's: The Jaguars by 10 plus, too many weapons.
No. 24 West Las Vegas vs Lovington: The Dons are undefeated and likely to stay that way this week.
Small School: Mora vs Santa Rosa: The 2A school in Mora is quickly become a title game favorite.
Small School: Pecos vs Santa Rosa: This is a rough week for Santa Rosa, Pecos now ranked No. 2 in 3A.

New Mexico Teams Head To California

Three teams will head to the Maxpreps Holiday Classics in California this week.

No. 2 Grants, No. 9 Cleveland and we believe No. 5 Carlsbad head to California to represent New Mexico. Grants will take on Kelso, Washington (2-1) on Saturday. Cleveland will take on Thousand Oaks, California on Saturday.

Week 5 Recap: Unwrapping the Parity

Week 5 Recap: Unwrapping the Parity
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

If you decided to hit the road for travel early (I just returned) then you missed what could have been a busy weekend. Unranked beat ranked, the second number one ranked team in the Top-25 lost, and we try to make it clear that this season is unlike any other.

What We Learned In Week Five

In 6A Hoops: No Bulldog, not Cavemen but Cougars?

As mentioned by Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com on the Saturday night recap the final undefeated team in 6A lost. The Bulldogs ranked No. 1 in the NMPreps.com Week Five Top-25 lost to the Cibola Cougars, 68-62. So what did we learn besides the fact that when March comes we won't have a clear cut favorite?

The Cougars at (8-1) might be one of the most unlikely teams to make the run and likely get some first place votes in the Week 6 Top-25. We say unlikely because in the 68-62 win they had another player slide into the leading performer for the night. We have seen junior Desmond Carpenter, who is already being courted by college teams pour in twenty points. We have seen senior Isaac Maldonado lead the team from the frontcourt. Well, on Saturday night it was senior Carlos Barela who had 18 points to lead the Cougars. Although they had five players in double figures, Zack Baca (12 points) and Cameron Dixon (10 points) along with Carpenter (12 points) and Maldonado (11 points).

In 6A Hoops: The Vikings Might Get The Nod in Week 6

This team had the Top 100 prospects coming into the season and after a opening loss to La Cueva the Vikings of Valley (6-2) who sat at No. 2 last week could be the number one ranked team in the NMPreps.com Top-25 come Monday morning.

We learned that they have options of their own and could be a resemblance of the 2014 title team. They have the stellar guard in sophomore Anthony Chavez who had 7 points in the win over Highland, 44-40. But it was the inside presence of senior post Teton Saltes who led the way with 20 points on the night. If teams take away Chavez or the athletic wing in sophomore Segun Oyeku they can pound it inside to Saltes. We learned that this team has options to take over any game from several positions. They have a state champion coach and even though it's young they have a deep roster.

In 5A Hoops: Could a 5A Team Get The Nod for Number One?

Still undefeated the No. 4 Grants Pirates (6-0) fought of their toughest opponent in the No. 24 Gallup Bengals, 62-58 for the championship of the Eddie Pena Classic held in Grants, New Mexico.

The Pirates have a deep roster of their own and we learned that they have the talent to finish any game. Where do we start with the Pirates, 6'5 senior wing/forward Richie Lucero, junior guard Matt Vail or senior guard Michael Chambers? What about 6-foot-6 forward Bradley Hatten who is coming into his own as of late. It's hard to beat a team with several scoring options and the Pirates have such that several different areas from the backcourt in Vail and Chambers or to the frontcourt with Lucero and Hatten.

In 4A Hoops: We went East in Portales, the southwest with Silver but now West (Las Vegas)?

4A hoops each year has come to the Hope Christian Huskies and the year we are seeing some parity in 4A we might have found the likely suitor. Will it be the West Las Vegas Dons (6-0) who are coming off a 17-point win (67-50) over Portales?

Well, I think we should have had that on our big board as the Dons are the 2015 state runner ups. They return a likely Top-10 player in DJ Bustos a junior who will own several records before walking the stage as a graduate. Bustos a spot up shooter guided the Dons to the win on Saturday night. They might lack the roster depth we talk about with other classifications but when you have a clear next level player like Bustos then you have a team that could win it all.

In 4A Hoops: We Might Have a Two Headed Monster in 2-4A.

Yes, the West Las Vegas Dons are making the waves after the win but we can't forget about the Pojoaque Elks (8-1) also enter the conversation only losing one contest to 5A Gallup. The Elks finished the week (3-0) winning their Ben Lujan Invite beating Hatch Valley (55-36), Bloomfield (41-34) and Mora (49-43). They have the depth from junior James Garcia but don't sleep on speedy point guard Joseph Fresques or shooters Tevan Flowers (2017) and Dominic Roybal (2017).

In Small School Division: Mavericks and Steers?

The Lordsburg Mavericks at (8-0) are still standing perfect in 3A basketball beating Animas this week (74-34). This team has the talent and depth to go far this season. They have been the team on the fringe each season and this could be the year they finish in the PIT.

Magdalena could be the team with the least respect but the defending champs at (7-0) are still riding a 38-game win streak. They are actually 67-2 since the 2013-2014 season. The Steers have Jorrell Mirabal a 6-1 sophomore who putting his name among the best sophomores in New Mexico averaging 24.2 points per game.

Different Awards: Top Five Performance From Week Five

School President - Jarrett Graham, So, Piedra Vista HS: The sophomore led the Panthers with 40-points on Tuesday night in a win over Shiprock High School. Anytime a player goes off it's hard not to reward him with the award.

Vice President - Anthony Chavez, So, Valley HS: Well, why not stay with the sophomore theme as Chavez went off for 26-points against a Top-10 team in Cleveland High School on Friday night.

Student Council Rep - Bradley Hatten, Sr, Grants HS: The 6'6 post had 19-points against Bernalillo and 15 against one of the better big men in Holt Shelley (Cliff High School) this week.

Free Lunch Ticket - Brenden Boatwright, Jr, Carlsbad HS: The big man has the footwork, nice shooting touch and proved it this week with a 24-point night (vs Goddard) along with 23 against Las Cruces.

Homework Pass - Dalton Privett, Sr, Dora HS: 34-points against Floyd this week and Privett is silent putting himself in the conversation for Small School Player of the Year award.

Rapid Fire: The Extra, Leftover Awards

Principles' Parking Spot - Ray Rodriguez, Cibola HS: I will admit that I have questioned Rodriguez for having talent but falling short. Well, can I have take backs as the veteran head coach is proving why he should be considered one of the top in the metro area. The Cougars upset number one Albuquerque High this week.

District Car Approval - David Rodriguez, Santa Fe HS: Yes, only 5-5 on the season but the Demons looked solid this week going 2-0 and earning a Top-25 win over Las Cruces 75-62 on Saturday night. I don't think any of us would have taken the Demons against this program.

Teacher of the Week - Steve Heredia, Centennial HS: The 2015 defending champs showed that they are still a team you shouldn't forget about as they beat undefeated Roswell on Saturday night.

Bracket Tracker: Down, Up and Some Loops

6A
Cibola - Rise: Win puts them in home game convo.
Valley - Rise: Keep winning and could lock Top-4
Santa Fe - Rise: Out last week, likely in this week.
Rio Grade - Drop: Went from possible top-10 to (14-17 slots)
Volcano Vista - Drop: Went from home game to road game.
Las Cruces - Drop: Went from in to likely bubble out.

5A
Los Lunas - Rise: They were Top-Four consideration and that's back in play.
Centennial - Rise: Back in the talk for Top-4.
Piedra Vista - Rise: Could be in play for a home game.
Artesia - Drop: Chaparral loss hurt, Valencia loss puts them as bubble out.
Moriarty - Drop: Had them at 16 last week, likely out after a 'bad' loss to Clovis.

4A
Ruidoso - Rise: Cobre is not a great win but a bubble win for the most part.
Hatch Valley - Drop: Fell to Socorro in a bad loss.
Bloomfield - Drop: Laguna-Acoma is good but they don't appear in the game.
