Week 10 Recap: District Champs Crowned, Player of the Week & Team of the Week

Week 10 Recap: District Champs Crowned, Some Clarity Still Needed
Joshua J. Grine of NMPreps.com

Week ten is in the books and we have but one week left of the regular season.

Five teams in 6A/5A volleyball have punched their ticket to the state tournament, winning their regular season district championship. In our feature today we will give you a rundown of the week that was week-10. We announce our player of the week, team of the week and much more. Let's dive in!

THE WEEK 10 TRENDS - THE CHAMPS

In 6A, we crowned three teams to regular season championships. The first and obvious champ comes in the form of a 17-game win streak in the (1) La Cueva Lady Bears taking home the 2015 District 2-6A regular season title. The Lady Bears are currently (17-0, 7-0) and finish up their season with 0-16 Highland.

The other two champs were not predicted (yours truly) to win their district but they have come on strong as of late. The team of the year could come in the form of the (2) Onate Lady Knights (13-5, 6-0) who are riding a 11-game win streak and have yet to lose a game to a team from the Land of Enchantment. They take of the crown of District 3-6A regular season District Champions.

Last, is the (3) Hobbs Lady Eagles (9-10, 5-0) taking home the District 4-6A title. The Lady Eagles are young this season but riding a 5-game win streak they are heading to the state tournament.

In 5A, no surprise with our regular season district champions. (4) Piedra Vista Lady Panthers (15-4, 7-0) walks away with the 1-5A title and (5) Los Alamos Lady Hilltoppers (15-3, 6-0) stays perfect with the 2-5A title.

WEEK 10 THE BIG THREE - CLARITY NEEDED

Our NMPreps.com Big Three each week highlights three teams and games that were the biggest news (in our opinion) of the week.

6A - (6) Cleveland Lady Storm: I will discuss them another time in this feature (read below), the Lady Storm have shocked, surprised and took the lead of District 1-6A. They sit at (10-8, 5-1) with a big time upset over Volcano Vista (3-2 match) during week 10.

5A - (7) Miyamura Lady Patriots: Riding a three game win streak the Lady Patriots have played themselves back into the playoff picture. At, (10-4, 4-2) the Lady Patriots upset the Farmington Lady Scorpions during week 10 (3 games to 1) and moved into second place of District 1-5A.

4A - (8) Shiprock Lady Chieftains: Easily handling their games this week Bloomfield (3-0) and Zuni (3-0) doesn't place the Lady Chieftains in our big three but the fact that we have failed to give love to a 13-4, 7-1 team. The win moves them closer to the 1-4A regular season title and an automatic bid to the 2015 state tournament.

WEEK 10 NMPREPS.COM PLAYER OF THE WEEK

North: (9) Miquela Martinez, St. Mike's. Martinez, takes home the NMPreps.com Player of the Week honors for the north this week with a 32-assist night in a win over Hope Christian on Tuesday night. The 5'5", freshman has played well all season for the Lady Horsemen who are 11-7, 5-2 on the season.

South: (10) Jadyn Nanez, Centennial. 56 assists in two matches this week, Nanez takes home the honor of NMPreps.com South Player of the Week. Nanez, a junior, helped the Centennial Lady Hawks to two wins this week over Chaparral and Valencia.

WEEK 10 NMPREPS.COM TEAM OF THE WEEK

The Cleveland Lady Storm is your NMPreps.com Team of the Week after the upset the Volcano Vista Lady Hawks. The Storm (10-8, 5-1) are one of the hottest teams of the month and currently riding a 4-game win streak. They have impressive wins but this weeks win over Volcano Vista could put them in the argument for a top-4 seed in next months state tournament. The Lady Storm also ran all over Santa Fe (3-0) during week 10.

Gillespie Shines

As a New Mexico native, Drew Gillespie (2016, Albuquerque, N.M.) often flies under the radar, but the righthanded pitcher showcased quality stuff in his brief start on Friday night. The University of New Mexico commit has a 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame with broad shoulders and some more room to add muscle and strength to his lean, athletic body. He ran his fastball up to 91 mph in the early going, sitting in the 90-91 mph range in the first inning before settling into the 87-89 mph range over the next three frames. He has some deception in his delivery and release, as he has an up-tempo pace to his delivery and works quickly to a lower three-quarters arm slot. The ball tends to get on hitters quickly and it takes some time for them to adjust to the different look. Gillespie flashed a slider and changeup, with the latter being the more consistent and effective on Friday night. The upper-70s slider shows promise, with some occasional hard biting action to the glove side, but feel for the pitch wavered. The changeup showed similar action to the fastball, tailing to the armside with some late, soft depth and deception. With a solid performance against a very good CBA Marucci lineup, Gillespie certainly provided on-lookers with a reason to monitor his progression this spring.

Mansfield JR RB Kennedy Brooks

Our JR RB Kennedy Brooks leads the state in rushing. The video is from two weeks ago against Desoto. Desoto has 3 D-1 commits on the D side of the ball. For the young RB's watching the video notice how he never stops pumping his feet in traffic. I get to watch this every Friday Night and we only graduate the QB and a WR and 2 OL.

Atrisco Heritage 44, Rio Grande 7 Final

Previews from earlier today

Rio Rancho 6-2, 2-0 @ Cibola 5-2, 1-1 (Community)
The Rams are coming into this Thursday Night rivalry game after a thrilling 36-34 win against Volcano Vista last Friday Night. This game, really the rest of the district match ups in District 1-6A have a great amount of seeding implications. The Rams are led by Senior Quarterback Steven Bailey who has thrown for 1,761-yards and 13 touchdowns, running back Josh Foley has rushed for 988-yards and 13 touchdowns. On defense Vincent Palmeri and Trey Parnell are two of the top backers you have not heard of, they have a combined 130 tackles. The Cougars, while being the underdog tonight have just dropped two games all season long. They lost to Volcano Vista 23-8 two-weeks ago, playing most of the game without running back Kazyan Martin (undisclosed injury). The Cougars do have some home-run hitters: Quarterback Gannon Chavez just thrown for 896-yards, Martin has ran for 729-yards, and Jeremiah Bell has 57 tackles on defense.

Atrisco Heritage 3-5, 2-0 vs. Rio Grande (Milne)
The Jaguars will look to keep their playoff hopes alive tonight as they take on their South Valley Rival Rio Grande who is winless on the season. The Jaguars defeated Valley last weekend 44-33, thanks to 150-yards rushing from Quarterback Aaron Bean who has rushed for 886-yards this year. Atrisco also has a back by the name of Darius Moore who has rushed for over 620-yards and 3 scores. The Ravens are 0-7 this year and have been outscored 335-33 on the year.

Highland 2-5, 0-1 vs. Eldorado 6-2, 1-1 (Wilson)
The Hornets head into Thursday Night's game against Eldorado losing two straight and likely a 4 touchdown underdog to Eldorado. The Hornets have won two games under second year Head Coach Stacy Washington, last year the Hornets went winless, so there has been some improvement. Watch for Quarterback Dominic Johnson and Receiver Nick Horton. The Eagles were upset last weekend by Sandia 17-12 dropping to 1-1 in district play, it should serve as an eye opener that no weekend is a locked victory. The Eagles are still considered a final 4 run type team and powered by Quarterback Jayce Jackson who has thrown for over 1,400-yards, Noah Swietzer who had 15 tackles last game and is gaining heavy interest from Hawaii, and David Inman who has over 500-yards receiving.

Thursday Night Preview, District Play Begins

By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

Onate vs. Mayfield (Field of Dreams)
The Knights may have started 0-4 this season, but have won their last two match ups running away. They beat West Mesa 49-0 and last week beat Rio Grande 54-0. The Trojans have lost three in a row: Alamogordo, Eldorado, and last week Manznao defeated the Trojans in an upset shocker. Truth be told, if Mayfield was to lose to Onate tonight their 15-season run of making the playoffs could quite possibly come to an end. Needless to say, it's a very important district opener.

West Mesa @ Valley (Community)
This was supposed to be one West Mesa's best teams in years, but at 1-5 their preseason hype was just hype. With that said, West Mesa and Valley are both 0-0 in district and all you have to do from here on out is win. Last week West Mesa lost to Volcano Vista 43-7. Valley has won two in a row beating La Cueva 18-15 and picked up win number two on the row beating Aztec 62-40 thanks to 200-yards rushing and 5 touchdowns from Michael Barboa. Valley is again, the favorite to win the district, they cannot afford to be upset tonight.

Bernalillo @ Del Norte (Milne)
While the talk in district 2-5A is focused on Espanola and Capital, those teams would likely also sit at 2-4 if they had played Del Norte's schedule. Their losses come against St. Pius X who is 6-0, Centennial who is 5-0, Los Lunas who is 2-3, lost to La Cueva last week 38-7, yes all those teams mentioned would likely beat Espanola and Capital. Tonight, Del Norte is a 4 touchdown maybe even more favorite against winless Bernalillo. Here comes Del Norte...

Clovis JV @ Texico
It's been hard to gauge Texico this season. One week they beat Santa Rosa, then lose to Tucumcari, then beat Clayton, then get blown out by Farwell, Texas, and lost again last week to Capitan. These games against Clovis JV are usually close, Texico can't afford anymore loses, good news is this game has no affect on their district play resume.
