Race to the State Tournament - Friday/Saturday

Thursday’s results:
La Cueva 1, Sandia 0
Las Cruces 2, Gadsden 1
Onate 3, Mayfield 2
Atrisco Heritage 2, West Mesa 1
Manzano 3, Del Norte 0
Farmington 10, Miyamura 0
Academy 8, Moriarty 1
St. Pius 11, Grants 1
Lovington 3, Goddard 0
Roswell 11, Artesia 1
Centennial 10, Belen 0
Los Lunas 2, Chaparral 0
Valencia 3, Santa Teresa 1
Aztec 7, Piedra Vista 0
Hope Christian 9, Bloomfield 0
Socorro 3, Hatch Valley 1
Sandia Prep 2, Santa Fe Prep 0
East Mountain 3, Rehoboth Christian 2

La Cueva finishes undefeated in district and has a strong case for the No. 1 seed. Someone smarter than me can figure out whether Sandia or Eldorado will finish second on tiebreakers, as they split their games with each other and have the same goal differential in those games. Las Cruces wins its district.

Academy wins its district. Goddard’s loss to Lovington may knock the Rockets out of the playoffs, and if Goddard is out, Lovington is out as well.

Socorro wins its district.

Friday’s games:
Eldorado at Highland
Albuquerque High at West Mesa
Rio Grande at Valley
Cibola at Santa Fe
Hope Christian at Farmington
Moriarty at Grants
Sandia Prep at Bloomfield

Saturday’s games:
Carlsbad at Hobbs
Clovis at Alamogordo
Deming at Las Cruces
Sandia at Manzano
Los Alamos at Del Norte
Academy at St. Pius
Rio Rancho at Cleveland
Chaparral at Belen
Valencia at Los Lunas
Santa Teresa at Centennial
Ruidoso at NMMI

District 5-3A remains muddled going into the last day of the regular season. Santa Teresa (6-2-1) travels to Centennial (6-3) in a strange situation – one of those teams will finish first and the other will likely end up third. If Santa Teresa wins or draws, it will win the district, with Chaparral (5-3-1) finishing second (assuming the Lobos beat Belen) and Centennial third. If Centennial beats Santa Teresa, it will likely be 1) Centennial; 2) Chaparral; 3) Santa Teresa. Valencia (5-4) has been a top 10 team all year, but if they don't beat Los Lunas (4-5), they will fall to fifth place in the district and will be on the state tournament bubble.

As to 1-6A, Rio Rancho has clinched the title. Assuming Cibola (3-3-1) beats last-place Santa Fe, a Rio Rancho win over Cleveland (3-1-3) on Saturday would leave Cibola second, Volcano Vista (4-3-1) third and Cleveland fourth. If Cleveland beats Rio Rancho, the Storm would be second, Cibola third and Volcano Vista fourth. If Cleveland and Rio Rancho draw, it will be 2) Volcano Vista; 3) Cleveland; 4) Cibola.

Weekend Trends: Bold Pick, 3 Questions for Top-25 Teams

IT'S FRIDAY: THE WEEKEND TRENDS

Okay, I have been swamped with getting together volleyball, boy's hoops and girl's hoops material out.

Well, I return this week in hopes that I see an improvement in my Pick 'EM standing. If you haven't noticed that my Top-5 Questions for Top-25 teams and Weekend Bold Picks have been missing, you're not missing much (haha).

Today, I'll throw a combo for both of them (sorry a day late).

WEEKEND TRENDS

In this feature I pick three bold picks that will be "trending". You know like last week when I had on our scoreboard that Volcano Vista beat Rio Rancho, then that didn't happen. My bad!

1. The Upset Pick - La Cueva beats Sandia: I needed to reach with my "upset" pick and I didn't feel comfortable with Valencia over Centennial, Roswell over Artesia (though I was highly tempted) and Carlsbad over Alamogordo. La Cueva is my upset pick. Do I have an expert reason - nope. La Cueva doesn't put up a lot of point but they normally don't give up a lot of points either (175). Sandia is not a team that will explode on the offensive side (212) so maybe the Bears win a low scoring affair?

2. The Score - Valencia keeps it low-ish; Centennial 24, Valencia 8: Okay, 24 used to be a high number when defense was important (yes, kill me for saying that) but we live in the time of 40-50 point games. This one could be a blowout but Valencia ends on a high note. They don't score points but they could keep this one from getting away from them by eating the clock up running the ball.

3. The Stat - 5 Touchdown, 153 yards; Dante Urrea, Deming HS: Okay, this dude has been carrying the load and I possibly have had him on my bold picks before but I want to use him again. Deming wins over Mayfield and Urrea scores on a 40-yard TD to win. He wins player of the week with those numbers and the win? (Why I am using a question mark - I don't know.

Record: Around 9-3 on picks for weekend trends. I don't remember past picks so I give myself the benefit (haha).

THREE QUESTIONS FOR THE TOP-25

1. Will a loss actually help? Is Cleveland all the Thunder? The last top-10 team that they played was a close contest against Eldorado (41-34 win). Volcano Vista is the team to make an upset a reality in this contest. The Hawks are getting healthy and their defenses hasn't allowed outrages numbers. A loss is never, truly good or fun but maybe a loss here a good thing? Plenty of questions in this one.

2. Is Roswell a "dark horse"? Ranked 20th in the NMPreps.com Top-25 and could be on the rise with a win or keeping it close. Roswell doesn't allow a lot of points (130 ranked 7th in 5A) and the Bulldogs lost ''only" scoring 25 (Yes, I know Houghtling was out). Roswell can sneak a win if they keep it low.

3. What 4A Top-25 team is the real deal - No. 23 Portales or No. 21 Hatch Valley? Portales takes on the reigning champ and Hatch takes on the scary of the two opponents in 5-2 Cobre. Losing team likely falls out of the Top-25 (maybe) while the winning team becomes the favorite. Both are putting up serious numbers (Portales 307 ranked 2nd) and Hatch Valley (387 ranked first).

PICK'EM

As you know I love Pick'Em and it's cool that we have chatter about the leaderboard. Well I have fallen to third place after having top picks in week 3 and 4. Well, I am already down one upset in Cibola not beating Rio Rancho. Lee Corso I am not; Well, actually this year maybe as he is around 1-5 on his picks (Gameday College football). Anyhow, it's Friday! I like going 3-0 on weekend trends and have had success so let's see.

Last Week: Cleveland 57, Santa Fe 0
Last Week: Rio Rancho 36, Volcano Vista 34
The Favorite: Cleveland
Hendo’s Take: The two teams match up very well personnel wise, but can anyone else in New Mexico stand 4-quarters with the Storm this year?

Valencia 2-5, 0-2

No. 3 Las Cruces - Open
Las Cruces 6-2, 2-0
Last Week: Las Cruces 56, Gadsden 6

Artesia 6-1, 0-0
Roswell 4-3, 0-0
Last Week: Artesia open
Last Week: Roswell open
The Favorite: Artesia
Hendo’s Take: While Roswell is much improved this year, Artesia is still the 10+ point favorite, especially if Senior QB Justin Houghtaling is back in the saddle.
Watch for: Sophomore QB Taylor Null who has thrown for 500-yards total in the last two games, Ethan Duff a junior RB, Codey Scott at DL, Carlos Carrasco at DB

No. 5 Alamogordo @ Carlsbad

Alamogordo 6-1, 0-0
Carlsbad 0-7, 0-0
Last Week: Alamogordo - Open
Last Week: Carlsbad - Open
The Favorite: Alamogordo
Hendo’s Take: Carlsbad is likely the best 0-7 team in the history of New Mexico High School Football, very dangerous and a trap game for Alamogordo if the Tigers are overconfident.
Watch For: Kyle Hooper who has thrown for over 1,700-yards, Hunter Graham who has 10-touchdowns, Julian Segura and Alex Ramirez who both have over 450-yards receiving, Isaiah Saldana at linebacker

Clovis 4-3, 0-0
Hobbs 4-3, 0-0
Last Week: Clovis - Open
Last Week: Hobbs - Open
The Favorite: Clovis
Hendo’s Take: The Battle for the Little Rebel has been tight as of late, this year I expect no less and expect a high scoring shootout. Without Clovis RB Micah Gray playing, that is taking 10 maybe more points off the board for the Wildcats.
Watch For: QB Dauton Hatley who has thrown for 665-yards, Seth Lopez who has 431-yards, Roland Chavez who has 272-yards, Jared Duncan who has 53 tackles

No. 10 Cibola lost to Rio Rancho

Cibola takes on Cleveland on Oct. 30th

No. 11 Manzano - Open
Manzano 5-3, 2-0
Last Week: Manzano 42, Highland 0
Hendo’s Take: One of the hottest teams in Class 6A and right now in 1st place in District 2-6A. They have 8 points on Eldorado going in to their October 30th game, win by less than 8 or just win and they are district champs.
Next: Eldorado on October 30th, La Cueva on November 5th

No. 12 Sandia vs. La Cueva
Sandia 5-3, 1-1
La Cueva 2-5, 0-1
The Favorite: Sandia
Hendo’s Take: While Sandia is reeling after their 17-12 win over Eldorado, La Cueva is no cupcake. The Matadors got a touchdown via their Wild Bull formation with Carter Phillips punching it in, also Jimmy Gallegos ran for 100-yards.

Moriarty 6-2, 0-0
Last Week: St. Pius X 28, Lovington 20
Last Week: Moriarty 36, Grants 0
The Favorite: St. Pius X
Hendo’s Take: Ok, now we get to see both of these team’s true colors and it’s an old district rivalry renewed with each entering this game having something to prove. This game could come down to who’s defense is better?
Watch For: Drew Ortiz QB who has thrown for over 1,700-yards and 22 touchdowns, Allen Michel from Moriarty has over 1,200-yards rushing, Sal Mora from Moriarty has 91 total tackles

No. 16 Piedra Vista @ Aztec

Last Week: Piedra Vista 38, Miyamura 0
Last Week: Aztec 29, Farmington 26

Goddard 4-3, 0-0
Lovington 1-6, 0-0
Last Week: Goddard - Open
Last week: St. Pius X 28, Lovington 20
The Favorite: Goddard
Hendo’s Take: Still going to be an interesting match up no matter the records, Goddard needs to come out and drop the hammer early, we saw that Lovington can came back if not put away as they scored 3 touchdowns in the 2nd half against Pius last week.
Watch For: Cameron Stevenon at QB, Lukas Gutierrez RB, Devon Qurioz ATH, for Lovington Brooke Quinonos threw for three TD’s last week.

Watch For: Forest McKee who ran for over 100-yards last week, Matt Young at Linebacker, and James Martin who is having a big year at defensive end

No. 20 Roswell vs. No. 4 Artesia
Artesia 6-1, 0-0
Roswell 4-3, 0-0
Last Week: Artesia open
Last Week: Roswell open
The Favorite: Artesia

Cobre 5-2, 1-0
Last Week: Hatch 35, Silver 10
Last Week: Cobre 34, Hot Springs 14
The Favorite: Hot Springs
Hendo’s Take: Hatch Valley has proven to be the real deal this year and defeated a good Silver team with ease last weekend 35-10. While Cobre is a good football team, Hatch is a 10 point favorite to get to 9-0
Watch For: Jered Garay who has thrown for 682-yards, Adrien Grajea who has rushed for 884-yards, for Cobre Andru Sanchez has thrown for 1,516-yards and 19 touchdowns

Last Week: Espanola 40, Del Norte 18
Last Week: Capital 34, Los Alamos 22
The Favorite: Espanola
Hendo’s Take: Espanola Valley is three games away from perfect, can’t believe I even wrote that, however Los Alamos and Capital are capable of ruin their run at perfection. Tonight could be close, but I kind of think Espanola continues to roll.
Watch For: Marcos Flores who has 625-yards rushing and 8 touchdowns, Josh Belmontes who has 554-yards, and Tommy Trujillo who has 480-yards

No. 23 Portales vs. Ruidoso

Week 10: Daily Trends from Thursday Volleyball

DAILY TRENDS FROM THURSDAY OF WEEK 10

Each we look at the daily trends for teams and how their stock for the playoffs looks like!

More: Week 10 Scoreboard

THE BIG THREE FROM THURSDAY

Cleveland - Trend Explodes - Trending UP
Volcano Vista - Trending Down
Why: Cleveland beats Volcano Vista as they continue to peak at the right time in the season. They move to over .500 at (9-8, 4-1) and also move to first place of District 1-6A. Volcano Vista falls to second place at (11-6, 5-2) and the trend is falling as they drop their 2 game out of 3.

Goddard - Trending Up
Artesia - Trending Down
Why: Goddard was called out by yours truly and said that they needed a big win of NMPreps.com's Week 10 Playoff Watch. Well, they answered that call and trend up. Bubble movement could be improved for week 11. Artesia couldn't afford a loss like this and now might suffer a pop.

Pojoaque Valley - Trending Up
Robertson - Trending Down
Why: We haven't released our playoff watch yet for 4A but either team losing this contest could be in trouble of missing the post season. West Las Vegas is the leader in this district and will get the auto.

Key Players From Thursday

Latshya Archuleta - St. Mikes - 9 kills in win over Hope.
Lyric Ellison - Volcano Vista - 14 kills in loss to Cleveland.
Gracie Puentes - Artesia - 13 kills in loss to Goddard.

Week 10: NMPreps.com's Playoff Watch

LA CUEVA AND ONATE LEAD THE PACK

Today, on NMPreps.com we continue our weekly (Yes, sorry we took week 9 off) view of the 12-teams that will make up the state tournament. Teams are locks and have made it clear they will receive a bid to the state tournament while a select few are fighting for the chance.

6A

"THE AUTOMATICS"

This group belongs to those who have earned the right into the state tournament by winning their district. Yes, some districts are down but we still reward you for winning your region and I'm still in favor of this tradition.

D1-6A: Volcano Vista (11-5, 5-1). They lost to Cibola in week-9 but still hold the edge for the regular season DC.
D 2-6A: La Cueva (16-0, 6-0). What else can we say, this coaching staff is doing a phenomenal job.
D 3-6A: Onate (12-5, 5-0). Still haven't lost to a NM team and riding a 10-game winning streak.
D 4-6A: Hobbs (8-10, 4-0). We have our first change in the autos as the Lady Eagles are on a win streak of 4-games.
D 5-6A: Albuquerque (7-7, 4-0). The edged out West Mesa, who we had here in week-8's playoff look.

"THE AT-LARGE"

This group could get tricky, and arguments could (we wish they would) be given for others over teams that we have listed.

  • Cibola (11-4, 3-2). The win over Volcano Vista only helps but like many teams in this group they have good and "not-so-good" things on their resume.
  • Sandia (10-6, 4-2). They moved up on the playoff watch as a runner-up in a tough district like 2-6A helps. The win over Eldorado (or fall of Eldorado) only helped.
  • Cleveland (8-8, 3-1). It's crazy to think at one point we had them ranked around 18th in 6A. They shake off their slow start and also move up in this weeks playoff look.
  • Gadsden (8-8, 2-2). Okay now we "might" be reaching here but we edged the first bubble team out with a runner-up from a solid district. Arguments could be made for both teams. Keep reading.....

"BUBBLE IN - BOTTOM THREE"

  • Eldorado (8-7, 2-3): Okay you kept reading, what keeps Eldorado in here is a under .500 district record this week. Things could always change but for now we have them behind Gadsden.
  • Las Cruces (9-9, 3-3): Las Cruces is hard to judge and them (along with Mayfield) falling behind Gadsden in the district standings hurts bubble teams.
  • Mayfield (12-6, 3-3): Fourth place might not get them in but hard to keep a 12-6 team out of the field.

"BUBBLE OUT"

  • West Mesa (8-8, 5-1): They have the chance to bump Mayfield or Las Cruces but need to upset Albuquerque High once.
  • Manzano (8-8, 2-4): Maybe a reach, needed an upset over Eldorado or Sandia then we could have possibly put them IN at the last spot.

HOW WE WOULD SEED THEM

#1. La Cueva
#2. Onate
#3. Volcano Vista
#4. Cibola
#5. Sandia
#6. Cleveland
#7. Gadsden
#8. Eldorado
#9. Las Cruces
#10. Mayfield
#11. Hobbs
#12. Albuquerque High

HOW THE POOLS WOULD SHAPE UP

Group-A
1-La Cueva, 8-Eldorado, 12-Albuquerque

Group-B
2-Onate, 7-Gadsden 11-Hobbs

Group-C
3-Volcano, 6-Cleveland, 10-Mayfield

Group-D
4-Cibola, 5-Sandia , 9-Las Cruces

5A PLAYOFF WATCH

Automatics

  • District 1-5A: Piedra Vista (14-4, 6-0)
  • District 2-5A: Los Alamos (14-3, 5-0)
  • District 3-5A: Centennial (15-2, 6-1)
  • District 4-5A: Roswell (15-2, 3-0)
  • District 5-5A: St. Pius X (15-2, 4-0)

At-Large Bids

  • Los Lunas (12-4, 6-1): Will get a high seed and the Centennial win is the best resume builder.
  • Albuquerque Academy (12-5, 2-1): Still a solid resume and above other at-large teams.
  • Farmington (9-8, 3-2): Not a bad resume and a DRU only helps.

Bubble Last Four In

  • Moriarty (13-4, 1-2): Hard to leave a team out that is this many games over .500. Schedule could be an argument but they won the schedule they had.
  • Artesia (12-5, 2-1): Resume is above the teams out at the moment.
  • Santa Teresa (12-5, 4-3): The district strength is helping them out right now.
  • Espanola Valley (9-8, 3-2): Right now as a DRU in 2-5A, over Del Norte but much could come from a tie-breaker.

Bubble First Two Out

  • Del Norte (9-7, 4-2): Argument from Espanola Valley.
  • Goddard (11-6, 1-2): Another deserving team but need a W over Roswell or Artesia, this moment would be an upset.
HOW WE WOULD SEED THEM

#1. St. Pius X
#2. Centennial

#4. Los Lunas
#5. Piedra Vista
#6. Los Alamos

Group-C

Group-D
4-Los Lunas, 5-Piedra Vista, 9-Artesia

Colorado

I don't know if anyone cares too much about Colorado football and I am not too sure if there is such thing as a quality loss, but Bayfield and Durango are doing very well north of us.

Bayfield (beat Kirtland Central and Miyamura) is 6-0 and is currently ranked #2 in CO Coaches/Media poll and #1 on maxpreps in 2A. They beat Paonia and ended their 26 win streak. Link

Durango (beat PV, Farmington, and Aztec) is 7-0 and is currently ranked #5 in the CO Coaches/Media poll and #5 on maxpreps in 4A. They have a huge game this week taking on the #1 ranked and undefeated Pine Creek in Colorado Springs. They won the last two 4A championships and are on a 36 game win streak. Too far for me to travel but would be an awesome game watch, especially if Durango was to pull off an upset. Link

Race to the state tournament - Thursday

Wednesday’s results:
Volcano Vista 4, Santa Fe
Cleveland 1, Cibola 1
La Cueva 2, Eldorado 0
Rehoboth Christian at East Mountain
Los Alamos 10, Bernalillo 0

Thursday’s games:
La Cueva at Sandia
Gadsden at Las Cruces
Mayfield at Onate
West Mesa at Atrisco Heritage
Miyamura at Farmington
Academy at Moriarty
St. Pius at Grants
Centennial at Belen
Chaparral at Los Lunas
Santa Teresa at Valencia
Aztec at Piedra Vista
Del Norte at Manzano
Bloomfield at Hope Christian
Socorro at Hatch Valley
Santa Fe Prep at Sandia Prep
Rehoboth Christian at East Mountain

Cleveland entered the day with a shot at the district title in 1-6A, but their draw with Cibola not only gave Rio Rancho the district, but now may finish fourth in district.

La Cueva’s win over Eldorado clinches the district. Today the Bears play Sandia in a game with big implications for seeding: La Cueva is playing for a No. 1 seed while a Sandia win or draw assures them a second-place finish in district at puts them ahead of Eldorado in the seeding. Academy wins its district with a win at Moriarty. Centennial, Santa Teresa and Chaparral get back on the bus for three key District 3-5A games in Valencia County.

NMPreps.com's Week 9 Players and Team of the Week

Sergio Carvajal (Roswell/Class of 2016) The Roswell boys are killing it again this season, with only 2 losses and 1 tie so far. Sergio Carvajal leads his team in scoring as he has 24 on the season. Carvajal's biggest game yet occurred on Monday, as he knocked in 5 against the Portales keeper as the Coyotes defeated the Rams 6-1. He then went on to score 2 of the Coyotes 10 goals against Artesia on Thursday and had an assist as Roswell beat Goddard by 1 on Saturday. Roswell has 2 regular season games yet, so be on the lookout for Carvajal to add some impressive goals.

Madie Trainor (Sandia Prep/Class of 2017) Madie Trainor is a multisport athletic machine. She has taken her junior soccer season and exceeded all expectations expected of her. Trainor currently sits 3rd in the state in all classifications in scoring, with 36 and an average 3 goals a game. This week, Trainor had an assist in the Sundevils victory over district opponent Bosque and knocked in a season high 5 goals against Rehoboth. Prep has only lost 1 game in which Trainor has scored, winning the other 11. The Sundevils next matchup will be against rival Hope Christian, where Trainor looks to score one past the defending state champions

Cibola Boys (11-5) The Cibola Boys are a team to look out for as the season comes to a close. Yes they have 5 losses on their record, however, they haven't lost by more than 1 goal all year. Their last two games, the Cougars have gotten revenge from earlier in this year as they blanked Volcano Vista and snuck a win against Rio Rancho, both of whom were ranked higher than the Cougars. The Cougars spread out their scoring, as 12 different players have scored a goal this season, with Joshua Garcia and Isahia Juarez leading the pack with 6 a piece. Enrico Sanchez has done a fair job between the sticks as he has only allowed 10 goals by in the 15 games played. The Cougars have 2 regular season games left against Cleveland and Santa Fe.
