Week 9 What to Watch: Big Three, Questions and Players to Watch

WEEKEND WATCH LIST

WEEKEND BIG THREE (sort of four)

R-E-S-P-E-C-T Game (Yes, the song)
No. 2 St. Pius X vs No. 16 Albuquerque Academy, Thursday: The Sartans come into the game at (12-2, 1-0) coming off a monster win over Moriarty on Tuesday night. The Sartans right now are looking at a
potential one seed in the state tournament. Not only is Albquerque Academy (11-4, 1-0) a ranked opponent they are a long rival to Pius.

Bubble Game (Cherry Red Flavor)
Valencia vs Espanola Valley, Saturday: Neither squad is ranked but both are on the so-called bubble for 5A teams hunting for a seed. Valencia right now at (6-8, 2-3) has the slight edge on our rank of bubble teams. This win will not "help" but could possibly pop the mythical bubble if they drop this contest. Espanola Valley (7-7, 1-2) could only benefit from this win and likely jump over Valencia with a dub (win) in this contest.

Double Take for Second (No slip Up's)
Deming vs Gadsden; Las Cruces vs Mayfield, Saturday: Okay of the four Deming is just trying to play the spoiler game at (6-9, 0-4) the playoffs are all but over with. Now, for the excitement of district play and playoff
talk. Gadsden (8-8, 2-2), Las Cruces (8-8, 2-2) and Mayfield (11-6, 2-2) are all currently tied in second place and in the hunt behind Onate. We haven't spent time to determine a potential tie breaker, so we just list the three in second place. Gadsden could make a jump from a week ago and with a win move into third/second. The loser of Las Cruces and Mayfield falls a game behind. Las Cruces took round one at LCHS but now the Mayfield Lady Trojans hope to seek revenge against the rival of Las Cruces' oldest high schools.

WEEKEND QUESTIONS FOR TOP-25 TEAMS

Can they run the table? La Cueva (14-0, 4-0) is currently ranked No. 1 (NMPreps.com Top-25 Team Rankings) and they get to square off with No. 11 Eldorado (7-6, 1-2) who could use the win for seed talk.

Who's number one in 5A? Los Lunas is ranked 7th in the state at (10-3, 4-0) and took the first match over No. 4 Centennial (13-2, 3-1). The rematch is in Las Cruces and both could be fighting for the top seed. (Yes, St. Pius X is currently number one but never know)

Is this team one to look at when considering a top-3 seeds? Roswell is ranked 9th in the state of New Mexico and at (13-2, 1-0) this team can't afford any loss. Artesia, a team searching to earn it's respect back is a scary opponent to show Roswell's true colors this late in the game.

PLAYERS THIS WEEKEND

Jordan Holland (Los Lunas) vs. Savannah Bush (Centennial): Both players bring the high profile, next level prospect, name to the game. Excitement, well yes!

Alina Vanecek (Abq Academy) vs. Kayla Griego (St. Pius X): Both made the all-state list a year ago and this match up brings more excitement in 5A this weekend. Vanecek has 234 kills, 43 serving aces.

Annabelle Kubinski (La Cueva) vs. Brigette Lowe (Eldorado): La Cueva has plenty of power to list but we look at the sophomore sensation in Kubinski to lead the charge as an x-factor. 119 kills on the season she could be the name this
weekend. Lowe has 195 kills this season and has seen her name mentioned before, this weekend she gets to display it as a headline if they win.

===========================================================================

TUESDAY NIGHT WATCH LIST
TUESDAY BIG THREE

Seed Game
Gadsden vs. Las Cruces: The Gadsden Lady Panthers (7-8) fell under .500 last week and out of the Top-25 last week. Right now searching for a signature win to help their case for the state tournament. Las Cruces (8-7) still ranked in the top-25 are looking to only improve their stock, a win won't really help but a loss will be detrimental to the seed.

Bubble Game
West Mesa vs. Albuquerque High: West Mesa (6-7) is leading the district race right now in 5-6A but this could potentially be the make a break type of game. Likely one team is going dancing from this district, the winner of this match could be the one dancing. Albuquerque (5-7) also undefeated in 5-6A was the favorite to win this district, tonight they get to live up to that.

Intriguing Game
Goddard vs. Artesia: This contest is a potential 4A seed game but brings two talented squads. Goddard (10-5) has been playing well lately and bring in a 2-game win streak. Goddard still ranked in the top-25 needs this game to stay in conversation for a playoff spot, with 4A teams on the rise they can't afford any loss. Artesia (10-4) recently fell out of the top-25 and needs a game to get back into the conversation.

TUESDAY QUESTIONS

Is Manzano a playoff team?
They square off with Top-25 Eldorado tonight in a "scary" game for the Lady Eagles. Manzano is a decent squad, they could be the upset flavor on any night.

Is Sandia the better team, they play Cibola? Last season Cibola played spoiler to Sandia in the state tournament as Sandia was the one seed and lost to the Cougars. Now Sandia comes in as this underrated, I use that loosely, team in this contest trying to spoil the Lady Cougars playoff hopes.

Is Onate the real deal? The Lady Knights are coming off as the team of the week last week (week 8) and play a game to prove their dominance with top-25 opponent Mayfield tonight. Onate can improve their stock with this win as they are the potential 2-seed in the state tournament. Magical season or has the dust settled? They are 8-0 vs. New Mexico teams.

GIVE ME SIX: PLAYERS TO WATCH

Today, I am listing six players that are top players in New Mexico but also six players that are making the NMPreps.com teams Miss Volleyball shortlist of candidates.

  • Catherine Kelly (Sandia Prep): The sophomore could take the trophy if the Lady Sundevils stay perfect.
  • Alina Vanecek (Albuquerque Academy): Leading the state with 218 kills, Vanecek is a must watch. Her stock is high right now, she should dominate the contest Tuesday vs 1-win Grants.
  • Brigette Lowe (Eldorado): Lowe has been mentioned this season and has been one of the best players. She and the Lady Eagles take on Manzano Tuesday. Lowe has 195 kills this season ranking 5th.

Other 3 Not Playing Tuesday, But Worth the Mention
  • Lyric Ellison (Volcano Vista): One of the most consistent players this season, Ellison is a must watch any night.
  • Abigail Stomp (La Cueva): Stomp is a D-1 commit and maybe not the profile game Tuesday (or any game) but watch out for Thursday.
  • Alyssa Adams (Moriarty): Adams another sophomore makes the list this season and has been impressive this season. This district is tough and she has her work cut out for her but to this point she has held her own. *Note Moriarty is actually taking on St. Pius X on Tuesday night. This is a huge game. Sorry for the oversight.

Any thoughts on Tuesday night?

Will schools like Lovington, La Cueva, and Carlsbad return as football powers?

Will schools like Lovington, La Cueva, and Carlsbad return as football powers?

La Cueva is 2-5 this year. Very strange not even mentioning them in the playoff hunt. What separates them from Eldorado this year? What is coming up the pipe at La Cueva in the future? How many people are moving into the area?

Carlsbad went 2-8 last year and many thought this would be a huge turn-around season under Gary Bradley, but here are the Cavemen at 0-7 heading into district play. Why are the Cavemen 2-15 over the last two-years? What separates Artesia and Carlsbad?

Lovington has lost their last 9 out of 10 games! Holy cow. How much has moving up a classification hurt this program? Is it more than that? Will Lovington ever return as a football power?

Looking Ahead, We Have Some Questions in 6A

Today, we look at a few questions for the preseason. Basketball features and talk is about to start heating up.

Is Rio Grande a playoff team?
Can Albuquerque High return to the Final Four?
Can Cleveland reload or will they be a bottom bubble team?
Chances you give Hobbs (0-100%) on repeating or returning to the title game?
Is Valley a viable favorite to play in the 6A title game?
Will Carlsbad ready for showtime (title game or bust)?
Who is your preseason candidate for Mr. Basketball? (Speak now)
Rank a district.
Who is the best guard?
Who is the best forward?
Who are the D-1 prospects?
Who are other next level (D-2 to JUCO) prospects?

Shea Patterson

Shea Patterson is now the number one ranked high school football player in the nation, all positions. He plays QB for IMG Academy in Florida....Notable because he is the cousin of the Pattersons of Rio Rancho High School- Austin (playing football for ENMU) Brady (playing basketball for ENMU), Clay (junior at RR), and David (Freshman at RR) Shea will be the QB in the Army all star game this year.....

Henderson: What's On Tap In Week 8, Key Questions For U

Henderson: What's On Tap In Week 8

Atrisco Heritage and Valley play Thursday Night. Each team believe it or not is still in the playoff race. Atrisco is 1-0 in district, Valley 0-1. Who wins District 5-6A in your opinion?

Rio Rancho hosts Volcano Vista in one of the biggest district games so far of the season. Not only is district placement on the line, but so is playoff seeding. What are differences between these two teams this season?

Centennial aka the No. 1 in Class 5A makes the short travel trip to take on Chaparral who is quite the surprise at 5-1 and 1-0 in district after a 38-20 win over Valencia. Anyone think Chaparral keeps it close? Mark Aguilar's name should be mentioned in Coach of the Year. When was the last time that Chaparral beat Gadsden???

Clayton heads to Estancia this weekend. The Yellowjackets nearly upset Robertson last week, can they keep up with Estancia? It's a rematch of the 2014 state title game. Is there anyone in 3A that can handle Estancia this year?

Del Norte @ Espanola is a game I am actually thinking of attending. I can't believe I am even saying that. In my heart I feel Del Norte wins this game, but Espanola has had two weeks to prepare for the Knights and the Sundevils have a ton of momentum. If Espanola goes 10-0 where does the NMAA seed them? If Espanola loses to Del Norte and to Capital, finishing 8-2 will they miss the playoffs?

Deming and Onate play in a key district 3-6A game. Are both of these teams already out of playoff contention?

Gateway @ Melrose is pound for pound the best game on tap this weekend. The Warriors have scored 307 points and allowed just 46. Melrose is 7-0, riding a 15-game winning streak, the Buffs have scored 386 and allowed just 34 points. Who you got this weekend?

Manzano will try to make it three in a row this weekend against Highland. Currently the Monarchs are 4-3 and 1-0 in district with back to back wins over Mayfield and Sandia. Is Manzano already a playoff lock, can the Monarchs get in with a .500 record?

Silver and Hatch is a game that is really on the radar for me this weekend. Silver has played a very tough schedule and has won 4 in a row. Hatch is a perfect 7-0 and one of the best Hatch teams at least on paper since the early 2000's outscoring the comp 352-68. Who has seen both Hatch and Portales, how do they compare? Any chance Silver can pull off the upset?

St. Pius will try to get to 8-0 this weekend against a struggling Lovington team. I've seen St. Pius X in action and while I think their schedule has been as soft as quality TP, their skill position players and experience make them dangerous. Is St. Pius X a final four team, best St. Pius X team since 1999?

St. Mike's hosts NMMI on Saturday at one of my favorite venues in New Mexico. Bet you did not know that NMMI is 6-0 after beating Ruidoso 28-20. The Horsemen are 4-2 coming off a 53-18 win over Pojoaque. Thoughts on St. Michael's this year, who has seen NMMI play?

Pictured is Head Artesia Football Coach Cooper Henderson, the Bulldogs have won their last 18 of 20 football games.

Coach of the Week - Cooper Henderson, Artesia High School
The Artesia Bulldogs defeated the Alamogordo Tigers last weekend at the Bulldog Bowl 34-30 in what was considered one of the biggest high school football victories Friday Night. The Bulldogs playing without their starting quarterback for the second straight week were led by a great defensive effort and a sophomore at quarterback handed the Tiger's their first loss of the season. Cooper Henderson and the Artesia Bulldogs have now won their last 18 out of 20 games and continue to prove that they are not a one-man team, nor have they ever been.

Team of the Week - Manzano Monarchs
One of the hottest teams in Class 6A is the Manzano Monarchs who are now 4-3 on the season. Two weeks ago, the Monarchs defeated the Mayfield Trojans, last Saturday they were able to open district with an important 35-25 victory over Sandia. The Monarchs were led by Orland Perez at quarterback who threw for 100-yards, ran for 134-yards, and returned a kickoff 74-yards for a touchdown. Sophomore Jordan Byrd who holds an offer from New Mexico caught a touchdown and scored off a 47-yard touchdown run. Manzano is back in action this weekend against the Highland Hornets.

North Player of the Week - Dominic Montano, Escalante High School
The Escalante Lobos who have won their last 17 out of 18 games defeated the Ft. Sumner Foxes last Friday Night 42-25 moving to 6-1 on the season. Senior Quarterback Dominic Montano was 1-6 passing for 13-yards, but ran for an incredible 419-yards off 33 carries and scored 5 touchdowns. On the season Montano has thrown for 427-yards and rushed for 1,112-yards and 20 touchdowns.

Metro Area Player of the Week - Marcos Gonzales, West Mesa High School
West Mesa won a very important district game against Valley last Thursday Night defeating Valley 53-44. On the night it was Marcos Gonzales, a senior quarterback who reeled off one of the biggest dual threat performances of the season. Gonzales threw for 186-yards with 3 touchdowns, rushed for 176yards with 3 more touchdowns, and also returned an interception for a touchdown. On the season Gonzales has thrown for 721-yards and 9 touchdowns.

Southwest Player of the Week - Dante Lopez, Centennial High School
In a 56-19 win over Los Lunas, the Hawks moved to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in district play. While there is a ton of key role players on Centennial, Dante Lopez a first year quarterback is having quite the year. Against the Tigers he was 9 for 10 passing for 150-yards and 5 touchdowns. On the season Lopez is 61-86-yards passing (71%) for 1,070-yards with 19 touchdowns and just 1 interception. The Hawks will take on 5-1 Chaparral in week 8.

Southeast Player of the Week - Cade Barnard, Melrose High School
6-foot-3, 200 pound Sophomore Cade Barnard is the next big time athlete out of Melrose. The 8-Man Football Power has produced numerous stat titles and is currently 7-0 this season heading into their marquee match up against undefeated Gateway Christian this Friday Night. During a 50-0 win against Springer, Barnard threw for 5 touchdowns, ran for 2 touchdowns, and had over 400-yards of total offense against the Red-Devils.
