Week One Review and Players of the Week

Boys Player of the Week:

Diego Flores (Los Lunas/Class of 2018/Midfielder and Forward) It's not every day that a Sophomore leads his team to victory. However, Diego Flores has done just that. The 5'8" Los Lunas Forward knocked in an impressive 6 goals in the Tigers 11-1 victory over Grants. Flores also set up a teammate 4 times to earn 4 assist points. Keep an eye out for Flores as he is setting himself up for a stellar season.

Girls Player of the Week:

Tatianna Limon (St. Pius/Class of 2017/ Forward) The St. Pius girls are already on track for another state title. That is in large part thanks to Junior Tatianna Limon. Limon has been a name to watch since she was a freshman, however, this year she is being known for something huge. Limon scored 11 goals in 3 games at the Lady Tiger shootout in Aztec, 6 of those came in 1 game. As a junior, Limon has officially broken the St. Pius all time scoring record, and she can only strengthen that record as her career plays out.

Week 1 Recap:

Week 1 ended the same as it does every year. Lots of mercy rules and clean sheets. Clovis and Socorro Girls proved dominance over their opponents right off the bat and showed they can rack in the goals. The Los Lunas Tigers showed that they deserve a top spot in 5A once again this year, as Diego Flores led them to an 11-1 victory over Grants. There were a handful of tournaments that were played out this week, including the Boys and Girls tournament in Aztec, the Alien City Invite in Roswell and the Sangre de Cristo Classic. In the Sangre de Cristo Classic, Taos scored 8 and allowed 0 to be crowned champions. The Aztec tournament saw both host teams falling in the final. Thanks to a Tatianna Sarracino hat trick, St. Pius knocked out the Aztec Girls to be crowned champion of the Lady Tiger Shootout. On the boys side, Lovington surprised most as they earned a 3-2 victory over Aztec. In the Girls Alien City invite, Goddard claimed first with a 2-0 victory over hosts Roswell. Week 2 will bring in even more soccer action as the Metro Tournament begins and every team has a game.
