District 4/5-4A: Wide Open Or Can Ruidoso Reload To Win The District
By Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

1570836.jpg

(File Photo) Ruidoso went 12-1 last year winning the Class 4A State Title

Rankings are based off our Preseason Top 100 Rankings on NMPreps.com

39. Ruidoso
The Ruidoso Warriors were nearly perfect during the 2014 season going 12-1 and winning the Class 4A State Title Game beating Cobre 35-28. They scored 487 points on the season and allowed 147, but the question mark heading into 2015 is who will step up to carry the torch after the graduation of a loaded roster. They graduate Cade Patterson at quarterback who threw for 2,798-yards, graduate Parker Johnson, who was a NMPreps.com Mr. Football Candidate, and Defensive End Dillon Trapp among many others. Looking for Cisco Mayville to be their guy, as a sophomore he ran for 1,350-yards and 17 touchdowns. They also return Jake Harrelson at linebacker who recorded 164 tackles as a junior, he also has an offer from Eastern New Mexico on the table.

44. St. Michael's
Under Head Football Coach Joey Fernandez it seems that St. Michael's is a yearly contender. Though they came up short in the playoffs against Ruidoso last year, the Horsemen were young and they'll be young this year. The sophomores have grown up a bit, but they are still one-year away from a state title run year. Returning is 6-foot-0, 210 pound linebacker Xavier Vigil who is one of the top juniors in New Mexico and also watch for Chross Jaramillo, Joey Fernandez Jr., and Jake Tetrault, none of the players mentioned will be seniors.

47. Portales
The Rams are going to be a team to keep tabs on entering the 2015 season because of their skill position players. Last year the Rams went 7-5 before losing to Silver in the playoffs. Headlining the roster is Bronte Staugaard who had an outstanding year rushing for 1,517-yards and 22 touchdowns, he is going to be a handful each Friday Night.

57. Hope
The Huskies Football Program has never really taken off. They have had three different head coaches in the last three years and went 2-8 last year going 0-4 in district play. The good news is that Caleb Meyer Hagen returns at quarterback, he'll be a three year starter.

67. NMMI
NMMI year in and year out is like a box of chocolates, you never know who is going to attend the military boarding school. Last year the Colts won 7 games under Randy Montoya, their defense was stellar allowing just 127 points on the season and forcing 4 shutouts on the season.

Recap:
Volcano vista looked good on offense with Quarterback Josh Williams throwing three touchdowns, two went to receiver Allan Rodriguez. Tight end Josh Barton made a nice snag over the middle of the field. Los Lunas defense had trouble defending the pass, but fared better than expected against the run. Los Lunas first offensive possession didn't create a lot of big plays, mainly because Volcano Vista was much bigger up front. Quarterback Anthony Sanchez is an athlete for sure, really, really liked him and they also had a fullback by the name of Dominic Mariano that impressed. Los Lunas Junior Running Back OMaury Samuels did hit a big run for a touchdown from 45 yards out, then limped off the sidelines. He never returned, looked like his hamstring is bothering him. The run was ridiculous as he started up the middle and made a few cuts up the field for a touchdown.

Players That Stood Out
Josh Williams - QB - Volcano Vista
Allan Rodriguez - WR - Volcano Vista
Josh Barton - TE - Volcano Vista
Nick Mourning - DL - Volcano Vista
Brian Parks - LB - Volcano Vista
Anthony Sanchez - QB - Los Lunas
Dominic Mariano - RB - Los Lunas
O'Maury Samuels - RB - Los Lunas

1st Year Head Coaches & Their Challenges
By: Kyle Henderson of NMPreps.com

Today we take a look at the incoming first year Head Football Coaches and highlight what to expect in year one.

Collin Justiss - Former HC at Clayton, New HC at Valencia
Collin Justiss - New Head Coach At Valencia
Former Head Coach at Clayton
Over the last two seasons Justiss who is under 35 years of age has record of 23-2. Valencia was 6-5 last year under Kevin Jolly and though they have reached the playoffs in the last few seasons, the Jaguars graduated a ton of talent. Big Challenge In Year One: Keeping the Jaguars playoff eligible this season

Dustin Tippett - New Head Coach at Clayton
Former assistant at Clayton
Good time to take over the job at Clayton while things are hot, but of course you got to keep them that way. Clayton is 23-2 in the last two years and has reached the Championship Game two-years running. Though Tippett has some talent returning, Clayton’s expectations right now are super high. Early losses could disrupt the stands. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Keeping the W’s rolling in weekly.

Eric Stovall - New Head Coach at Shiprock
Former Junior Coach at Heights Middle School
The Chieftains hired the young Stovall to obviously win, but to also bring some much needed hype and new age feel to Shiprock which went 3-7 in 2014. It’s a tough place to coach, but they have won before and reached the playoffs before. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Getting the kids to buy in

Gary Bradley - New Head Coach at Carlsbad
Former Head Coach at Farmington
This was the biggest coaching change/takeover this summer. Bradley leaving Farmington a program he built up for a one-horse town 6A program that went 2-8 in 2014 missing the playoffs. Carlsbad is clearly a sports town and has a ton of athletes and if Bradley can win a state football championship in Farmington, maybe he can bring some magic to Carlsbad? The magic won’t happen this year, we’re guessing 2-3 seasons we’ll see some big, big changes. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Playing Artesia and Mayfield at home.

Greg Jenks - New Head Coach at Kirtland Central
No previous information
Jenks takes over a program that went 5-6 during the 2014 season and reached the first round of the playoffs. This has got to be a good job as Kirtland has one of the larger enrollments out of class 4A. Not sure how much pressure there is at Kirtland right now to win, so Jenks should have time to build in his own philosophy as a Head Coach. District is filled with teams you should beat every year, can’t slip there. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Taking the program to the next level.

Jeff Dalton - New Head Coach at Farmington
Former assistant at Farmington
Farmington has been a yearly staple in the 5A football mix since the take over of Gary Bradley, but Bradley is gone and in-steps Jeff Dalton who was one of Bradley’s top assistant coaches. Farmington is still a good spot to coach football and the foundation should be solid enough for Farmington not to take steps backwards. This district is till up for grabs, winning the district title this year would be a huge boost of confidence for the community in their new coach. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Keeping the momentum going

John Cabos - New Head Coach At Bernalillo
No previous information
After Ken Noel left as Head Coach in 2013 the program has had two new coaches in the last two-seasons. Last year Trent Spencer went 2-8 and now in-steps John Cabos. No way to spin it, it’s a very tough place to win at, get athletes, and just compete at the 5A level. Last year they lost to Del Norte 42-0 and lost to Capital 54-0, two district opponents that should be better in 2015. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Not leaving after the season

Josh Olsen - New Head Coach At Gallup
Former Assistant Coach at Hoover, Iowa
Under Cyle Balok in 2013 the Bengals went 2-8, last year under Chris MacKeown the Bengals went 0-10 and were outscored 488-129 on the season. Olsen will be their third coach in three seasons and there is plenty of work to be done at Gallup and who’s to say you cannot win in Gallup? Last year cross town rival Miyamura went 10-2 on the season. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Winning a single game

Ken Stevens - New Head Coach at Eunice
Former Assistant at Carlsbad
Eunice has of the top facilities in New Mexico and over the last 5-7 years they have had the athletes to go along. Replacing Caleb Aldridge who went 7-5 including a trip to the semifinals in 2014 is long time Carlsbad assistant Ken Stevens. You’re expected to win and win often in Eunice, there is pressure yearly. This year will be no different. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Making the playoffs

Kevin Graham - New Head Coach at Dexter
Former Head Coach at Kirtland Central
In his last two years at Kirtland Central, Graham went 11-10 reaching the playoffs in both years. He is heading back to the Southeast Area of the State to take over Dexter a program that continues to be in the mix when we talk 3A high school football. Last year Dexter was 8-4 losing to rival Eunice in the quarterfinals. This year’s Dexter team has some talent, so Demon fans are likely expecting another playoff run. Biggest Year One Challenge: Keeping the program performing at a high level

Mark Lopez - New Head Coach at Loving
Former Loving Assistant
Just a few years ago this program could not field a team because of low numbers, last year they went 2-7 under Doug Santo. In steps Lopez who will somehow try to turn the Loving program around, it’s a difficult job to say the least. Loving has won just 3 games since 2012. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Understanding the wins don’t always come on the scoreboard

Ron Gallegos - New Head Coach at McCurdy
No previous information
The Bobcats had a down year in 2014 going 2-8 on the season. Ron Gallegos takes over for Jorge Oropeza. McCurdy was outscored last year 436-189. Another tough take over in the off-season. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Gaining momentum as a program

Sam Mascarenas - New Head Coach at Rio Grande
Former Assistant at Rio Grande
Since 2012 the program will of had 3 different head coaches. Last year the Ravens went 1-9 under Pat Quillen, their lone victory came against winless Highland. The new Head Coach is Sam Mascarenas who has been around the Ravens as an assistant for quite some time and is part of the mid-2000 Ravens staff which last went to the playoffs. With Atrisco Heritage opening next door, it’s going to be a continued tough sell to get kids to go to Rio Grande, but you play the cards you’re dealt. Biggest Challenge In Year One: Building trust within the players

Nice You-Tube Video of new Hobbs Boys & Girls Club

Please search Hobbs Boys & Girls Club - You Tube for a beautiful and moving video presentation of the newly opened Boys & Girls Club. The construction was in part funded by a $10M gift from the Maddox Foundation in Hobbs. This video also has moments shared by Adrianne Ross (Ronald Ross' sister) and Tubby Smith along with others. It is really worth your time as it is by far the nicest and most advanced Boys & Girls Club in the nation. It is exciting for me to see our state have more things to offer that are best in the nation.

Feature: District 3-5A Preseason Preview

#1. CENTENNIAL HAWKS
Last Season Record: 21-4, 12-0
Last Season District Finish: 1st Place

Quick Hit: The Hawks are the preseason No. 1 team in New Mexico and reigning 5A State Champions. They have a loaded roster heading into next season with, Destiny Ruiz (2016/S) who is regarded as one of the best players in the state. However, Ruiz has help in any direction she looks along with another player on the early watch list in 6-foot, Savannah Bush (2016/MB). The Hawks also bring back a wealth of talent in Iyabo Adeogba (2016/OH) and D'Andra Espinoza(2016/DS) who create a team that could be even better than the title team from last season..

The biggest question regarding the Hawks: The Hawks will try to repeat, can this team avoid the title season celebration and bring back that dominance?

#2. LOS LUNAS TIGERS
Last Season Record:
14-9, 8-3
Last Season District Finish: 2nd Place

Quick Hit: They have Jordan Holland (2016/MH) a 2014 first-time all-state player who could also be a favorite in the consideration of the 2015 Miss Volleyball. She will team up with a 2014 second team all-state player in Kelsey Bell (2016/S). This could be a special year for the Tigers.

The biggest question regarding the Los Lunas:
They have the talent returnnig but can they avoid the late season travels to put together a title run at State. The final months will be tiring to get through.

#3 SANTA TERESA DESERT WARRIORS
Last Season Record:
12-9, 4-7
Last Season District Finish: 4th Place

Quick Hit: Maybe a season away the Santa Teresa (No. 13) could be a scary team for the next two years with a talented 2017 class. Madison Leyva (2017), Betel Hernandez (2017) and Maranda Legarreta (2017) create a serious trio. They have some talented teams in this District and will have to avoid losing at home and try to steal a game from Centennial or Los Lunas.

The biggest question regarding ST:
The Desert Warriors have talent but will they be able to answer the call early to be a top team in this difficult district?

#4 VAELNCIA JAGUARS
Last Season Record:
13-9, 6-4
Last Season District Finish: 3rd Place

Quick Hit: The Jaguars will rely on three talents coming into the season and this could be the dark horse squad of the District. They have the ability to be an upset in the making for top teams. Peyten Linthicm (2016), Maya Dow (2017) and Emily Garcia (2017) will be the three names to know.

The biggest question regarding the Jaguars:
They will only have one senior to look at for leadership, is that going to be enough in a travel disaster district?

#5 BELEN EAGLES
Last Season Record:
9-12, 2-8
Last Season District Finish: 5th Place

Quick Hit: Natasha Hirschfeld (2016/L) is the leader of this team that will try to solidify itself as one of the best teams in the District. They will battle and try and getting into the top-3 tier of a tough District. They will need to get wins early and try to upset Valencia or ST.

The biggest question regarding the Eagles:
The Eagles lack some depth and will hope to find those players that are the surprise new names on the year. The question is do they have the program in place for that?

2015 3-5A PRESEASON ALL-DISTRICT TEAM

Sandia/Del Norte/West Mesa Scrimmage Highlights

Sandia Matadors
Login to view embedded media Scrimmage Analysis: They are very big up front and at times had their way with both West Mesa and Sandia creating a few big play opportunities. Running Back Jimmy Gallegos busted out a nice first run from scrimmage and Dominic Baca broke a long touchdown run. I think Sandia could improve in the pass depart on offense, but Jeremy Archibeque did connect on a few passes over 12-yards. On defense Sandia did not allow many big plays that I saw and their linebackers did a good job filling holes and I like their defensive front.
Players That Stood Out
Jimmy Gallegos - Running Back
Dominic Baca - Running Back
Ben Betram - Defensive Line
Jeremiah Loya - Defensive Line
Matthew Holly - Offensive linemen
Isaiah Lowery - Offensive Line
Linebacker (I think it might of been Mark Flores?)

West Mesa Mustangs
Login to view embedded media Scrimmage Analysis: There has been a lot of talk that this group would be much improved and I believe the hype, but it's not really hype it's a strong foundation that has been built by 4th year Coach Ron McMath. I think they were the second best team there today and I liked that they put the ball in Idan Urrutia's hands at running back, you've got to get your best athlete the football. Marcos Gonzales was a pleasant surprise at quarterback and they had some good linebacker play. I didn't see any deep balls get behind them. Coach McMath mentioned that they are not that deep, but I certainly think they can make a run for the district title and a playoff spot this year.
Players That Stood Out
Marcos Gonzales - Quarterback
Jacob Garduno - Linebacker
Iran Urrutia - Running Back/Defensive Line
Jon Martinez - Defensive Line

Del Norte Knights
Login to view embedded media Scrimmage Analysis: Watching Coach Binkley coach his kids up is something else, he does it right and his enthusiasm for his kids is really un-matched. Del Norte I think is still the front runner for the district tile and they'll have the most size without question. Today against West Mesa and Sandia they held their own and when they line up 240 pound Avery See at tailback, it's all downhill. They didn't turn the ball over, did not make a ton of mistakes and their offensive line anchored by Gabe DeSoto is not bad. Also liked their tight end Tony Swanson who made some good grabs.
Players That Stood Out
Avery See - Running Back/Linebacker
Gabe DeSoto - Linemen
Tony Swanson - Tight End
Parker Herndon - Running Back
Dante Mora - Quarterback
