We're a month out...probably as good as time as any to start talking about the World Cup. Some teams are being named. I wonder how the US team will shake out.

Sepp Blatter has vowed to make this World Cup a stage to fight racism and discrimination. Despite FIFA's hypocritical action of awarding the 2022 Cup to Qatar. But, Mexico is now under investigation for its fan base yelling Puto when the opposing GK has a goal kick. It's a decade old tradition that has now become an identifier of the Mexican fan base. They even do it at youth tournaments. FIFA wants to make a statement in this area which is becoming a black eye in Soccer worldwide. Maurice Edu and Jozy Altidore have been victims of racial slurs at games in Europe. As has many athletes. FIFA has not punished a team at a World Cup for fan behavior, but there is plenty of precedence that they could. Bulgaria, Hungary, Peru, and the Ukraine have all been punished by FIFA for violating anti-discrimination protocols. They've had to pay fines and even play in empty stadiums. It happened in league play in Japan this year.
Joe Webb is the CONCACAF president and is well aware of the Mexican Puto tradition. Webb is also the leader of the task force in charge of removing this type of fan behavior from the game. So he's is in a vicarious situation of protecting his regional affiliate but also their investigation. Now that the entire world has seen the Mexican fan base use puto to describe opposing GK's and now that FIFA has been called to take action, what will Webb and FIFA do?
To add further to the madness. Instead of Mexico coming out with some canned statement on how they will educate their fan base and this type of behavior cannot be accepted, apology...yada, yada, yada. Mexico has taken a stance of support for the fans, the slur, and saying it's not bad. Basically, Mexico gave Webb the big middle finger. With Mexico's coach coming out with support for the puto, I expect to hear it louder than ever at their final match vs Croatia.
Does FIFA make an example of Mexico in front of the entire world? This story could get very interesting.
