The Christmas break comes to an end early. Today, a handful of tournaments will tip off across New Mexico. If you are looking for a bracket, go to the thread labeled "What to Watch in Week 6".

Phoenix-Central AZ vs Los Lunas

Phoenix-Central out of Arizona will take on Los Lunas down in Las Cruces at the LCPS Hoopla tournament. Phoenix-Central AZ makes a return to New Mexico after years of attending the Rio Rancho tournament. Los Lunas has picked up steam in the 5A rankings and has an opportunity to make a statement this week. Two players that I absolutely enjoyed watching were Ezra Guest (2023) and Geleio Griego (2023). The compliment D-1 prospect Jalin Holland (2025) very well in this system. Griego has been the early riser on our players to watch.

Navajo Prep vs Goddard

Perhaps the Goddard Rockets initially saw the Navajo Prep Eagles as an "easy" first-round game for the Poe Corn Tournament in Roswell. What we have is an opportunity for the Eagles to continue their hot start with a win over a 4A opponent. Goddard plays host to the top half of the tournament, with Roswell hosting the bottom half, and is in dire need of a win. This would be a resume win if Navajo Prep eventually wins their district.

St. Michael's vs Pecos

A solid battle between a top 2A team (Pecos) and a top 3A team (St. Mikes). This game is part of the 2022 Stu Clark tournament taking place in Las Vegas on the campus of New Mexico Highlands University (John A. Wilson Complex). The top half of the bracket features some of the best teams with Robertson and Portales also taking place.

Week 6 Team Rankings

5A Basketball

  1. Hobbs Eagles (9-1 overall): 1-0 last week.
  2. Albuquerque Bulldogs (9-1 overall): Open
  3. Volcano Vista Hawks (10-1 overall): 1-0 last week.
  4. La Cueva Bears (3-3 overall): 0-1 last week.

  16. West Mesa Mustangs (4-3 overall): 1-0 last week.
New: N/A | Dropped: N/A | Next: Alamogordo

Scoop: This is what you need to know about 5A basketball in New Mexico; it is the most unknown classification we've ever seen. On any given night a team could lose. Hobbs is the only constant sitting at the top but 2-16 could continue to shift each week.

4A BASKETBALL
  1. Kirtland Central Broncos (10-0 overall): 1-0 last week.
  2. Gallup Bengals (7-2 overall): Open.
  3. St. Pius X Sartans (5-3 overall): Open.
  4. Hope Christian Huskies (3-4 overall): Open
  5. Albuquerque Academy Chargers (2-4 overall): Open
  6. Valley Vikings (7-3 overall): 1-0 last week.
  7. Portales Rams (6-5 overall): 0-1 last week.
  8. Valencia Jaguars (9-2 overall): 0-1 last week.
  9. Goddard Rockets (6-4 overall): Open.
  10. Artesia Bulldogs (4-3 overall): 0-1 last week.
  11. Highland Hornets (3-5 overall): Open.
  12. Moriarty Pintos (7-3 overall): Open.
  13. Lovington Wildcats (6-3 overall): Open.
  14. Silver Colts (5-3 overall): 0-2 last week.
  15. Pojoaque Valley Elks (6-5 overall): 1-0 last week.
  16. Los Alamos Hilltoppers (3-4 overall): 2-0 last week.
New: Los Alamos | Dropped: Bloomfield | Next: Bloomfield

Scoop: Bloomfield nearly missed out this week despite going 1-0 last week. The issue was Los Alamos earning an upset win last week over Valencia, who was previously ranked 4th.
