Notes & Newsworthy

  • There are some musical chairs taking place. Some shifts happened to make room for teams on the rise.
  • It will take a couple of weeks to start feeling comfortable with placements.
  • West Mesa, Organ Mountain had the most significant improvement weeks.

Week Four: Five to Watch in 5A

Week Four: Five to Watch in 5A

Atrisco Heritage (7-1) at La Cueva (3-1), Friday: Both teams moved up one spot this week, La Cueva (No. 2) and Atrisco Heritage (No. 4). An early preview for the 2023 State Tournament.

Organ Mountain (6-1) at Hobbs (4-2): Friday: Two of the top teams in southern New Mexico square off on Friday night of this week before we head into the Christmas break. Organ Mountain jumped in the ranks, over Hobbs, and now we get to see if they stay.

Los Lunas (5-1) at Las Cruces (4-2), Tuesday: Los Lunas and Las Cruces sit in the 5-10 range of teams fighting for a claim as a potential Final Four team come March of 2023. Los Lunas coming off their first loss of the season and Las Cruces went 2-1 last week in Belen at the Hub City.

Del Norte (6-1) at Volcano Vista (6-0), Friday: The top-ranked Volcano Vista Hawks welcome one of the 4A favorites. Although the Hawks will be favored, it provides us with some next-level talent on a Friday night.

Carlsbad (4-5) at Mayfield (1-5), Tuesday; Carlsbad (4-5) at Rio Rancho (3-3): Thursday: We added two games to the final slot as Carlsbad continues their difficult slate of games. They play a pair of teams in the same rankings range. In four of their five losses, Carlsbad's point loss total equals 6 points. However, they do have a 61-44 loss to Rio Rancho that they will be looking to avenge for tournament resume bid.

MUST-SEE

Centennial and Eldorado turns into an early resume game. Both are most likely playoff teams however, this one could put a team like Centennial at 1-4 searching for some needed wins.

Cleveland and West Mesa will play for the championship of the Phil Griego tournament. West Mesa coming off a big win over Carlsbad (56-54 OT) last night in the semifinals.

Del Norte and Organ Mountain down in Belen provide us with the game of the day. Next level talent in this contest and what could be a monster finish to the Hub City.
