Preview: The Hobbs Eagles wrapped up the 2021 campaign with a 6-6 overall record, which included a state win over Eldorado in the first round of the New Mexico high school football state playoffs. It was a relatively successful season for head coach Ken Stevens and signs point to continued improvements. The biggest question for the Eagles will be at the quarterback position; Colton Graham has graduated and replacing a QB that threw for over 2,200 yards will create growing pains. Good news for the next quarterback will be the return of three offensive weapons in Kaden Trevino (WR/2023), Ethan Vanlandingham (WR/2023), and Diego Baeza (ATH/2023). Trevino led the team in receiving yards with 974 yards and added in 13 receiving touchdowns. Baeza led the team in rushing yards with 671 yards along with 305 receiving yards.

Predictions: 5-5 overall. We don't know the entire schedule for the Eagles but they'll have enough talent to float around .500 again this season. The opener with Clovis will dictate the direction of the Eagles team in 2022.

6A Football 2022 Preseason Team Rankings

HOT

Organ Mountain - The win streak extends to 12-games after this week. The Knights are currently looking to earn a top-four seed at the 2022 New Mexico high school baseball state tournament.

La Cueva - The Bears are now 15-1 and riding an 8-game win streak after week 8. The Bears will look to add another district championship and currently sit at 4-0 in district 2-5A play.

Rio Grande - The Ravens are 10-4 on the season and currently on a 5-game win streak. Also, with their win over Manzano on Saturday Head Coach Orlando Griego now has 400-wins.

Cleveland - The Storm had a slow start but the waves have started moving and a win this week over rival Rio Rancho will improve their stock.

Los Alamos (4A) - Looking at the Hilltoppers and you have a team that looks to make a run during the state tournament and possibly the dark horse of the group. Currently sit at 12-7 and riding a 6-game win steak.

Aztec (4A) - The Tigers are the hot/cold team of 4A baseball this season. They came in ranked high, won some quality, then fell into the cold quick. They are more in the lukewarm stage sitting at 13-6 overall and winning the last 3-games.

Ruidoso (4A) - A bubble team on the rise. The Warriors are 10-6 overall and winners of the last 4-games after sitting at .500. They are 4-0 in district play and look to battle Santa Teresa for the top spot in district.

COLD - LOOKING AT BUBBLE TEAMS

Kirtland Central - The Broncos are a bubble team to make the state tournament and this week nearly pops that bubble. The Broncos suffered two must-win games against Miyamura and Shiprock.

Eldorado - The Eagles now sit at 6-8 after this week and moving further in to the 12-16 range. They are 1-5 in the last six games and currently sit at 0-4 in district play.

NO. 12 FARMINGTON SCORPIONS

2021 Playoffs: Semifinals (L, Artesia 57-14)

Preview: A season after earning the 1-seed in the 5A state playoffs and reaching the semifinals the Scorpions will go through a transition. They move into 6A football, the largest enrollment classification in New Mexico high school football. The Scorpions will also lose their quarterback from last season and turn to 2024 Terl Griego, a 6-foot-4, 225 pound, prospect with plenty of upside. Griego tossed for 331-yards and 3-touchdowns last season as the back-up. The Scorpions graduate plenty and that includes the receiving core. Targets that could shine will be 2023 players Josiyah Archuleta and Jeven Smith. Both earned valuable playing time behind a sound group of seniors.

Predictions: 4-6 overall. Without the entire schedule as we conduct the preseason Spring preview the Scorpions could sit around 1-4 wins depending on the schedule. They move into a difficult district with the likes of La Cueva, Eldorado, Sandia and West Mesa. Currently they'll entire the season behind three of those four teams.

Below is the link for the events in New Mexico/Albuquerque this summer.

- June 9 - 12 - Mickey Mantle World Series Qualifier - 16U. Winner of this event will receive a berth to the World Series in Norman, OK (University of Oklahoma - July 18-24). There are 25 teams registered. The WS will have 30 teams after other qualifiers. There will also be an event that weekend (June 9-12) for the other age groups in Albuquerque.

- June 30 - July 3 - The Duke City Championships (formerly High Desert Classic) has 21 teams registered which includes teams from TX and CO.

Preview: The Clovis Wildcats are coming off a 3-win season and will feature plenty of changes as we enter the 2022 season. Turning around the trend will require improvements on both sides of the ball, starting with an offense that went from averaging 39-points per game (468) in 2019 to averaging 13.5-points per game (162) last season. The Wildcats will have a new quarterback in 2022 but will have the following players back to guide a new QB. Robert Nora (2023) led the team in receiving yards with 674-yards and 7-touchdowns. Nora also was second most for rushing yards with 305-yards and 3-touchdowns. Kash Robertson (2024) also returns after going for 328 receiving yards, 283 rushing yards and two touchdown for the Wildcats.

Predictions: 4-6 overall. It will take a few years to get the Wildcats back to the state title contender that it was a couple years ago and they will likely settle for another 3-7 or 4-6 season. The new district for the Wildcats will be Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Capital, and Los Lunas. If the improvements happen they could be set up for an October 28th District Championship against Los Lunas.
