#1 Albuquerque Academy Chargers (24-4) vs #8 Valley Vikings (17-11)

Date: Thursday, May 12th
Time: 7PM
Location: Rio Rancho HS
Prediction: Academy 3, Valley 2
Preview: The Valley Vikings are coming off a two game sweep of Belen in the opening round. Look for the continued strong play of Alexander Dye (2022), Alex Gilliam (2023) and Ricky Henderson (2023). The Academy offense was alive in their opening round, dominates Kirtland Central, 11-0 and 10-0. They have plenty of hitting options that include Dominic Baca (2022), Devan Johnson (2022) and Alex Gaeto (2022). Academy took the first two meetings during district play but the Vikings showed fight only falling 1-0 in the latter of the two.

#2 St. Pius X Sartans (20-4) vs #7 Artesia Bulldogs (18-10)

Date: Thursday, May 12th
Time: 4PM
Location: Rio Rancho HS
Prediction: St. Pius X 6, Artesia 2
Preview: The St. Pius Sartans have been putting in runs as of late, going for double digits seven of the last nine games. They swept Ruidoso in the opening round as they prep for this quarterfinal game. Artesia enters that game as a four run underdog to the Sartans. Artesia is coming into the game after play five straight against Goddard. The last two in the first round of the state tournament. Senior Josh Madrid is 6-0 for the Bulldogs this season. This will be the first meeting between the teams this season.

#3 Los Alamos Hilltoppers (20-7) vs #11 Miyamura Patriots (15-14)

Date: Thursday, May 12th
Time: 10AM
Location: Rio Rancho HS
Prediction: Los Alamos 7, Miyamura 1
Preview: Miyamura is coming off an upset win over 6-seed Santa Teresa in three games (2-13, 21-15, 20-7), in the first round. If they can get hits like they did the final two games of that opening round then they could keep upset on their mind. Jeremiah Paredes (2022), Jaimeer Beyale (2023), and Isaac Gonzales (2022) are the studs to watch. Los Alamos flexed in the first round beating 14-seed Valencia, 11-1 and 10-0 for a sweep. They feature top pitcher Taylor Drake (2022). This is the first meeting between the teams.

#4 Grants Pirates (20-8) vs #5 Aztec Tigers (21-8)

The Grants Pirates enter the quarterfinals after winning their first ever playoff game (NM baseball historians feel free to correct) beating 13-seed Bloomfield in a sweep. The Pirates winners of 10 of the last 12 games. Grants features some solid hitters in Gabriel Marquez (2023), Izeyah Manzanares (2024), Dominick Gonzales (2025) and senior Tyler Everhart, all hitting above .400. Ranking the Games to Watch in the 1st Round

TOP THREE SERIES TO WATCH

(6) Cleveland vs (11) Centennial.
5A Bracket. The Cleveland Storm, for several weeks have been considered a top-three team in the classification. After a bit of a up and down season one in which they went 1-5 in a two week stand the Storm finished the season 16-9 overall and district 1-5A champions. Braelyn Elzy (2022) is batting .385 with 27 RBIs and 2 HRs this season for the Storm. Also, stud pitcher Jace Dominic (2022) has 6 wins in seven tries with 66-Ks on the season. The Centennial Hawks travel north after a 16-10 overall season and hold a 8-7 win over the Storm back in early March. The Hawks look to the hitting of Steven Milam (2023) who has a .500 BA with 41 RBIs and 4 HRs.

(5) Hobbs vs (12) Las Cruces. 5A Bracket. The battle of 20-win teams will take place in southeastern New Mexico for this first round showdown. The 5-seed Hobbs Eagles play host with a Friday afternoon start of 4:30 pm. The Hobbs Eagles went 20-6 on the season, finished runner up in District 4-5A, and look to move on behind strong pitching. Senior Colton Graham has a 6-3 record with 77-K's on the season. 2022 Zak Peters also with 6-wins and second in K's with 50 on the season. The Las Cruces Bulldawgs enter the post season with a similar 20-6 season and runner up finish, District 3-5A. 2022 Pitcher Steve Solorzano is 5-1 on the season with 80-K's. The star also has 4 home runs and 24 RBIs on the season with a .419 BA.

(8) Valley vs (9) Belen. 4A Bracket. The Valley Vikings and Belen Eagles square off in the opening round, Valley is the host site. Belen enters the game with a 13-9 overall record and have wins over St. Pius X (#2) and Volcano Vista (#10-5A). 6-1 RHP Kenny Trujillo (2023) has a 4-2 record for the Eagles. The Vikings enter the game behind a 15-11 overall record and a district runner up finish in 6-4A. Look for slugger Austin Daye (2022) who has 2 HRs, 21 RBIs, and a .461 batting average.

GAMES THAT WILL GO ALL THREE

4-Grants vs 13-Bloomfield. Have the Pirates ever won a playoff round? After a solid season the Pirates are ready to make history. The Bloomfield Bobcats have been a wild card and could take one of three.

7-Artesia vs 10-Goddard. Another three games to decide the season for these District 4-4A teams. Artesia won two of three during the district slate just three days ago. Another three this weekend is likely.

1-Carlsbad vs 16-Eldorado. Are you willing to take an upset in the first round? Nope. However, I could see this one going all three with the Eagles coming off a 10-7 win over 3-seed La Cueva last weekend. Carlsbad continues to be slighted, do they flex?
