Best/Worst Case Scenario: Los Lunas Tigers

Best Case Scenario: 9-1 overall. The Tigers are coming off a perfect season and will be favored in 8 games, with a true coin flip against Roswell. With a quarterback like Cieremans and the Tigers could make a run in their first season of 6A football.

Worst Case Scenario: 6-4 overall. The Tigers should be fine in all five of the games that they are favored in but could split their FCF games.

Best/Worst Case Scenario: Volcano Vista Hawks

Best Case Scenario: 7-3 overall

Taking out the COVID season the Volcano Vista Hawks have won 27 games (2021, 2019, 2018). During that span the 2019 season seen the Hawks go 11-1 and earned the 1-seed in the playoffs. They need to replace key players from the 2021 roster but over a four-year span they've done well reloading. They can get to 7-wins but will need to beat one of the four games in which they are a preseason underdog.

Worst Case Scenario: 4-6 overall

They lose a quarterback that threw for 2713 yards and 26 touchdowns. They also need to replace stud receivers in Valdez and Cordova which made up for about 2300 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns last season.

Player Rankings Top 5 Players to Watch Next Season

Top 5 Players in New Mexico High School Football

NMPreps list of the top-50 players to watch during the 2022 New Mexico high school football season. #nmpreps

#1 | STRATTON SHUFELT

HT/WT: 6'3, 220 | School: Cleveland HS
Class: 2024 (#1)
Position: LB (#1)
Notes: The 2024 prospect has been in the spotlight since earning an early offer from the University of New Mexico. He has since received three other offer (Recruiting & Highlights). Shufelt had 56-total tackles (45 solo) and 8-sacks during a 13-0 season. The Storm won the 6A New Mexico high school football state championship.

Rivals Profile

#2 | EXODUS AYERS

HT/WT: 6'3'', 165 | School: La Cueva HS
Class: 2023 (#1)
Position: WR (#1)
Notes: Ayers immediately climbed the charts during the 2021 season with a 168-yard, 2-touchdown game against Cibola to open his season. Ayers would play 9-games for the Bears totaling 901-yards and and 15-touchdowns as a junior. Ayers currently holds an offer from the University of New Mexico.

Rivals Profile

#3 | EVAN WYSONG

HT/WT: 5'11'', 165 | School: Cleveland HS
Class: 2023 (#2)
Position: ATH (#1)
Notes: What can't Evan Wysong do on the football field is the question by many who try to game plan against the University of New Mexico verbal commit. Wysong passed for 1787-yards with 19 passing touchdowns for the Storm last season. He also rushed for 987-yards, had 63-receiving yards, and went 41 for 42 on PATs. Add in 15 rushing touchdowns, a receiving TD and had some reps on defense. Wysong is an early favorite for the 2022 New Mexico Mr. Football award.

Rivals Profile

#4 | PAUL CIEREMANS

HT/WT: 5'11'', 195 | School: Los Lunas HS
Class: 2023 (#3)
Position: ATH (#2)
Notes: Cieremans is a fantastic athlete so much that he leads his team in passing yards and is top-10 in the state for rushing yards. Similar to Wysong, he is a dual-threat quarterback for the 2021 5A state champion Los Lunas Tigers. Cieremans has a strong frame that is most comfortable on the move outside of the pocket where he can find open spots and what elevates him is his competitiveness that could carry him along way. Stat line reads: 1347 passing yards, and 20 passing touchdowns. Add in 1544 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns.

#5 | AIDAN ARMENTA

HT/WT: 6'3'', 190 | School: La Cueva HS
Class: 2023 (#4)
Position: QB (#1)
Notes: Armenta is the best pocket passer, with natural arm strength, and the ability to rip the ball to his receivers. The Bears are set to have a stellar season coming in favored to play for the 6A football state championship and Armenta is a huge reason why. The 2023 prospect threw for 2,696-yards and 28-passing touchdowns as a junior guiding the Bears to a 10-2 record.

Note: NMPreps staff will update the list over the next two months.

Best/Worst Case Scenario: Alamogordo Tigers

The 2022 New Mexico High School football schedules are being released. NMPreps.com will start to release our best and worst case scenarios to each schedule.

SCHEDULE PREDICTIONS

Best Case Scenario: 4-6 overall.
The high end of the best case scenario could have the Alamogordo Tigers winning the games that they are favored along with some of the coin flip or underdog games. The move up in classification from 5A will hurt this program especially when you look at their new district - Las Cruces, Hobbs, Organ Mountain, Carlsbad, and Centennial.

Worst Case Scenario: 3-7 overall. Three games against Valencia, Capital, and Gadsden help balance out a difficult slate when we hit the late September/October portion of the schedule.

Over/Under: 3.5 (vote here)

ALAMOGORDO TIGERS (2-8 overall, 0-3): The Tigers have their teeth cut out for them moving back into 6A football from 5A. The defense returns some experience as they look to be a dark horse to finish in the top three - Damon Mayberry (2023) and Ryan Stovall (2023) are the first names on that defense that come to mind.

CARLSBAD CAVEMEN (3-7 overall, 1-3): After a 2-1 start the Cavemen only find a single win the rest of the way. Usher in new head coach Oliver Soukup, the former New Mexico State University Aggie assistant coach, and the Cavemen hope to make their way back into playoff contention.

CENTENNIAL HAWKS (8-2 overall, 4-0): Perhaps one of the more consistent programs in 6A football as head coach Aaron Ocampo has created a winning program. Check out 2023 prospects Devyn Woods and Izaiah Gonzales on defense this season.

HOBBS EAGLES (6-6 overall, 2-2): The Eagles suffer the loss of their quarterback from last season; Colton Graham threw for over 2,200 yards. However, coming off a state playoff win in 2021 and a duo of Kaden Trevino and Ethan Vanlandingham could have them flirting with the top three spots in this district again, maybe more.

LAS CRUCES BULDAWGS (7-5 overall, 3-1): Las Cruces didn't win the district last season but a couple of playoff wins and semifinals appearance deemed the season a huge success. Zayke Hawkins (2024/WR) and Siddeeq Shabazz (2023/S) are a couple early names for the Dawgs.

ORGAN MOUNTAIN KNIGHTS (4-6 overall, 0-4): The Knights are no longer at the bottom of the classification and this season they hope to continue improving this program that sat in the cellar for a few years. They graduated some key pieces and will look to RB Joe Estrada (2023).

DISTRICT 2-6A

Eldorado Eagles (7-4 overall, 4-1 district)

Eldorado has pieces to replace but look to prospect Matthew Pacheco (2023) to guide them into 2022 on both sides of the ball.

Farmington Scorpions (11-1 overall, 4-0 district)**
The Scorpions move up from 5A to 6A for this two-year block and they could be in for a rebuild after taking a hit to graduation.

La Cueva Bears (10-2 overall, 6-0 district)
La Cueva is absolutely loaded this season and not only a favorite to win the district but the state championship behind the likes of Ayers, Buie, Mangino, and Armenta -- all DI caliber players.

Sandia Matadors (5-5 overall, 4-1 district)
The district has some RB's to watch this season and the Matadors feature Malachi Thymes (2023) who will do battle with the best of them.

West Mesa Mustangs (3-6 overall, 1-3 district)
The Mustangs have an uphill battle and new head coach Landrick Brody has his work cut out for him as he takes a team from the cellar of the district. The good news is one of the top prospects in the 2024 class will be a Mustangs - Elijah Brody (ATH)
