Double Dribble: Review the Week

Double Dribble: Review the Week

NMPreps takes a second look at what happened this week in New Mexico high school basketball for the week of December 27th - 30th.

Team of the Week: Hobbs
. The Eagles went 3-0 to win the Hobbs Holiday Tournament. The wins include Piedra Vista (89-34), Montwood, TX (75-45), and Cleveland (77-53). The Cleveland win is perhaps the big one as the Storm are the defending state champs and currently ranked No. 2 in New Mexico.

Stock Riser: Belen. The Eagles have currently won four in a row including three this week as the took home the Stu Clark Championship in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The games took place at New Mexico Highlands University. The wins over Bernalillo (48-45 OT), West Las Vegas (79-61), and Taos (57-51).

Ramping Up: Rio Rancho. The Rams went 3-0 this week taking home their tournament with wins over Santa Fe (48-42), Espanola Valley (62-57), and St. Pius X (49-36). Those three wins are impressive to end 2021 as they are all three playoff projected teams. Keep an eye on Keagan Caton (2022) - length, nice 15-footer, and makes the Rams go.

College football Head Coach Carousel

Lincoln Riley headed to USC top recruits already following. USC will win a championship within a couple of years.
I was wandering if this might be a possibility although didn’t think it would happen this quickly.
lot of people in OU land not happy with move to SEC. Lincoln had gotten use to playing top fiddle in big 12 wouldn’t be that way with Saban around. Lincoln will bu top dog by a long shot in PAC 12.
Been a sooner fan whole life. Didn’t think that would ever change but I will not follow them to SEC. Probably have to break out my old Charly White jersey and carry it around on saturdays sinc not a chance in hell of me stretching it enough to get it on. Maybe even do the unthinkable and root for the Cowboys. TBD

New Mexico High School Football Preseason Team Rankings for 2022

NMPreps will take a look at each team in New Mexico high school football leading up to the 2022 season. #nmpreps

(21) WEST MESA MUSTANGS

Town: Albuquerque, NM
2021 Record: 3-6 overall, 1-3 district
2021 Playoffs: missed
Head Coach: N/A

Scoop: The West Mesa Mustangs could be a team fighting their way out of the cellar in 2021. They graduate a quarterback that earned a spot in the 2021 NMHSCA Red vs Green Chile Senior All-Star Game. Next, the announcement that head coach Anthony Ansotigue has stepped down will set them back in any building process. The Mustangs program is a difficult job as is but over the last two seasons they have graduated some of their better talent and it could send them fighting to get out of the bottom of the classification. Good news? Well, they are no longer with the Rio Rancho powers in district. The bad news? They will still have to battle with La Cueva, Eldorado and a Farmington program that moves UP to 6A after being the 1-seed in 5A football in 2021.

Players: Plenty has graduated from the Mustangs roster and they'll have plenty of holes to fill. Some returners include Elijah Espinoza (2023/RB-LB), Isaiah Ontiveros (2023/RB-DB), and Darian Lucero (2023/DB). Vences Caraveo (2024/LB), and Zedekiah Thompson (2023/DB) also return on defense after gaining some experience last season.

Early Prediction: 1-9 overall, 0-4 district
