Key Games to Watch this Week

Key Games to Watch this Week

Top games to watch during the week. The first half will feature key games taking place Monday - Wednesday of each week with a second half follow up for Thursday - Saturday. Post your games.

4th Quarter (Friday)

Valley (4-0) at Belen (5-2): Taking place at the Hub City tournament. The game is a seed game when it comes to the 5A bracket.

Eldorado (2-2) at Volcano Vista (5-0): Volcano Vista is a on a mission this season and have gained/earned to be in the conversation as a title contender. Hill, Alter, and Valdez create a serious trio.

Centennial (2-4) at Santa Fe (5-0): Round two of this contest. Both teams played well in their opening game. Santa Fe has a combination of quality guards and an inside presence.

3rd Quarter (Thursday)

Atrisco Heritage (2-1) at Sandia (1-1): The Adrian Ortega farewell week is here for the Atrisco Heritage Jaguars. They have a big game against highly ranked Sandia Matadors. Expect for a close but high energy contest.

Organ Mountain (1-3) vs Clovis (0-2) is a bubble game and will be one that we talk about again in February to March. Winner can get an early season criteria win.

Goddard (0-1) vs Hope Christian (1-2): This one is a top-10 4A game for early December. It is very early but which team is more likely to climb into the the title contender position.

1st Half

Volcano Vista (3-0) at La Cueva (3-0) has the makings of a late playoff matchup. Don't be surprised to see one or both in the Final Four or even making a state championship. Yes, both have that much talent.

Carlsbad (4-1) travels to Roswell to take on the Goddard Rockets (0-0) who will open their season. Carlsbad is getting 5A contender consideration while the Rockets are a 4A team with a chance at a top-8 seed.

Belen (4-1) will make the trip west to Gallup (0-1) as both teams are looking to rebound from losses last week. Belen picked up some early love with a 4-0 start to the season while Gallup was upset by Pojoaque Valley. Both hope to have missing players return soon.

Highland (2-0) at Hope Christian (1-1) is a must-see in 4A basketball with both teams likely being top-8 playoff teams that will reach the PIT floor in March. Jose Murrillo (2022) is a top-five prospect in the state but don't sleep on some of his surrounding mates.

Crownpoint (4-1) and Rehoboth Christian (3-0) make my list for small school basketball tonight as both are off to a hot start - Rehoboth Christian is a defending state champ looking to continue their reign.

NMPreps weekly team rankings for New Mexico high school basketball.

5A BASKETBALL

1. Volcano Vista (1-0)
2. Hobbs (1-2)
3. La Cueva (1-1)
4. Farmington (2-0)
5. Sandia (3-0)
6. Mayfield (2-1)
7. Centennial (3-1)
8. Piedra Vista (3-1)
9. Las Cruces (3-1)

12. Carlsbad (4-2)
13. Cleveland (4-1)
14. Clovis (3-1)
15. Albuquerque (1-2)
16. Gadsden (7-0)

Keys: Sandia jump with a quality win last week over Mayfield (previously number 4). Farmington win over Gallup was just as impressive and moved the Scorpions up this week.

Sixteen: We dropped Cibola this week and added Gadsden. Gadsden still has plenty to go before being taken as a serious playoff team but 7-0 is 7-0.

4A BASKETBALL

1. Gallup (5-1)
2. Portales (2-1)
3. Kirtland Central (2-2)
4. Bernalillo (4-0)
5. Highland (2-1)
6. Hope Christian (1-1)
7. St. Pius X (2-1)
8. Taos (3-1)
9. Goddard (2-3)
10. Valencia (2-3)
11. Moriarty (2-1)
12. Artesia (2-3)
13. Bloomfield (2-2)
14. Los Alamos (3-2)
15. Espanola Valley (0-4)
16. Chaparral (5-0)

Keys: Espanola Valley took the biggest drop after starting the season 0-4. Granted it is three tough losses, the Los Alamos loss is what dropped them. Valley and Silver drop out of the rankings this week. Los Alamos and Chaparral jump into the rankings.

Sixteen: Chaparral is ranked for the first time in the top-16..ever (when we cut it down to 16 or 12 in the past). Still a lot to show and search for a signature win but as of now they have the spot.
