3A Format

I’ve been a head baseball coach for 19 years now. The 3A playoff setup was not a good one and actually punished the four top seeds. Those guys didn’t play games for 2 plus weeks which is not something you want in baseball. In the meantime the lower seeds were able to play 2 to 3 games last weekend. It was not of an advantage to be a top 4 seed. Throwing bullpens and getting live at bats in practice isn’t a substitute for playing games. The last thing a coach wants is a two plus week break heading into the state tournament. I think that’s why 3 of the 4 top seeds went down. Just my two cents.

New Mexico High School Football Preseason Team Rankings

NMPreps preseason countdown of all 6A New Mexico high school football teams. #nmpreps

NO. 7 CENTENNIAL HAWKS

City: Las Cruces, NM
2021 Record: 8-2 overall, 4-0 district
2021 Playoffs: Quarterfinals (L, Las Cruces 35-21)
Head Coach: Aaron Ocampo
NMPreps 6A Preseason Rank: #7 (of 21)
NMPreps Top-40 Preseason Rank: Coming Soon

Preview: The Hawks claimed the District 3-6A title in 2021 and despite falling in the playoffs to Las Cruces, success continues to surround the program. Head coach Aaron Ocampo will again after to rebuild the roster after losing key prospects to graduation but history tells us that they will be okay. The Hawks return a strong core of 2023 prospects in Devyn Woods (LB), Isaiah Abeyta (WR), Izaiah Gonzales (DE), and Mikah Gutierrez (RB). If the pieces fall into place, this should be one of District 3-6A's better defenses. The schedule will be tough with the first three games going against Cleveland, El Paso-Franklin (TX), and La Cueva -- Cleveland and La Cueva likely 1-2 going into the season.

Early Prediction: 5-5 overall, 4-1 district.

NO. 8 VOLCANO VISTA HAWKS

City: Albuquerque, NM
2021 Record: 7-5 overall, 3-2 district
2021 Playoffs: Quarterfinals (W, Carlsbad 49-17; L, La Cueva 35-21)
Head Coach: Chad Wallin
NMPreps 6A Preseason Rank: #8 (of 21)
NMPreps Top-40 Preseason Rank: Coming Soon

Preview: The Volcano Vista Hawks will enter the season with another quarterback under center but they fill the void with a nice prospect. Elliot Paskett-Bell (2023), a 6-foot-2 mobile quarterback, with athleticism and does well at improvising to make a big play for the offense when a play breakdown. The Hawks are coming off a 7-win season and this could seem high for a program that produces some serious talent each year. Keys to that are replacing number ones at - QB, RB, WR (top 2), and most talented defender. The defense looks to take a hit, due to graduation, and playing in the very difficult 1-6A could appear concerning.

Early Prediction: 5-5 overall, 1-3 district

NMPreps guide to the 2022 New Mexico high school baseball state tournament quarterfinals. #nmpreps

#1 Albuquerque Academy Chargers (24-4) vs #8 Valley Vikings (17-11)

Date: Thursday, May 12th
Time: 7PM
Location: Rio Rancho HS
Prediction: Academy 3, Valley 2
Preview: The Valley Vikings are coming off a two game sweep of Belen in the opening round. Look for the continued strong play of Alexander Dye (2022), Alex Gilliam (2023) and Ricky Henderson (2023). The Academy offense was alive in their opening round, dominates Kirtland Central, 11-0 and 10-0. They have plenty of hitting options that include Dominic Baca (2022), Devan Johnson (2022) and Alex Gaeto (2022). Academy took the first two meetings during district play but the Vikings showed fight only falling 1-0 in the latter of the two.

#2 St. Pius X Sartans (20-4) vs #7 Artesia Bulldogs (18-10)

Date: Thursday, May 12th
Time: 4PM
Location: Rio Rancho HS
Prediction: St. Pius X 6, Artesia 2
Preview: The St. Pius Sartans have been putting in runs as of late, going for double digits seven of the last nine games. They swept Ruidoso in the opening round as they prep for this quarterfinal game. Artesia enters that game as a four run underdog to the Sartans. Artesia is coming into the game after play five straight against Goddard. The last two in the first round of the state tournament. Senior Josh Madrid is 6-0 for the Bulldogs this season. This will be the first meeting between the teams this season.

#3 Los Alamos Hilltoppers (20-7) vs #11 Miyamura Patriots (15-14)

Date: Thursday, May 12th
Time: 10AM
Location: Rio Rancho HS
Prediction: Los Alamos 7, Miyamura 1
Preview: Miyamura is coming off an upset win over 6-seed Santa Teresa in three games (2-13, 21-15, 20-7), in the first round. If they can get hits like they did the final two games of that opening round then they could keep upset on their mind. Jeremiah Paredes (2022), Jaimeer Beyale (2023), and Isaac Gonzales (2022) are the studs to watch. Los Alamos flexed in the first round beating 14-seed Valencia, 11-1 and 10-0 for a sweep. They feature top pitcher Taylor Drake (2022). This is the first meeting between the teams.

#4 Grants Pirates (20-8) vs #5 Aztec Tigers (21-8)

Date: Thursday, May 12th
Time: 1PM
Location: Rio Rancho HS
Prediction: Grants 5, Aztec 4
Preview: The Aztec Tigers enter the quarterfinals with 21-wins on the year and a first round win over 12-seed Hope Christian in three games. The Grants Pirates enter the quarterfinals after winning their first ever playoff game (NM baseball historians feel free to correct) beating 13-seed Bloomfield in a sweep. The Pirates winners of 10 of the last 12 games. Grants features some solid hitters in Gabriel Marquez (2023), Izeyah Manzanares (2024), Dominick Gonzales (2025) and senior Tyler Everhart, all hitting above .400. The teams split the regular season meetings -- Aztec won the first 11-3 (February 25th) and Grants taking the second game 5-3 (March 18th).
