Playlist for Tonight: Friday Night Football

WHAT TO WATCH TONIGHT: 70's STYLE

Did you know: Gadsden is currently (3-3) on the season as they take on Lovington (3-3) on the road tonight at 6pm. I'm not fact checking it but I believe they have won 3-games in 3-years total.

Perfect: Ramah (5-0) takes on Gateway Christian (4-0) tonight at 7pm in a battle of undefeated 6-man teams. Ramah features Whelan Clawson (RB/2022) who has 14-touchdowns and 685-rushing yards this season.

Cats & Dogs: Clovis (0-4) is looking to earn their first win of the season over district opponent Albuquerque High (2-3). Most teams are playing for the third seat in District 2-5A, with a chance at getting an at-large bid to State.

I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor): The Rio Rancho Rams (4-0) have been stomping over teams this season outscoring teams 201 to 7. Yep, you read that correctly and those are against ranked teams. Cibola (3-2) looks to shake things up..... can they survive four quarters against the power?

I Can See Clearly Now (Johnny Nash): Raton (6-0) at West Las Vegas (5-0) tonight in the original Las Vegas! So no betting here. A poster said it best this week, "Raton is the Rodney Dangerfield of 3A" in reference to his line "I get no respect, no respect at all". Well, Tigers here is your chance to move on up and clear things up.

Take It Easy (Eagles): Los Lunas (6-0) takes on Highland (1-4), Cleveland (5-0) hosts Atrisco Heritage (3-2), and Farmington (6-0) travels to Los Alamos (3-3). This section is our most likely to be done early games. Biggest win margin (oh yeah lines coming back).

Rocky Mountain High (John Denver): Centennial (4-1) will take on Organ Mountain (2-2) to open district play. The Knights of Organ Mountain looking to shock someone and this will be their one chance at a playoff spot. Centennial is thinking DC and top-four seed. "I know he'd be poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly". Well, does this Hawk fly tonight or with it be lights out for the Knights?

The Rest

Lean on Me: Valencia (4-2) vs Grants (1-5). The Jaguars looking for a top-seed and possible DC.
American Pie: Volcano Vista (3-2) hosting West Mesa (2-3) as they look for a piece of the top-8 slice conversation.
Bennie & the Jets: Robertson (5-1) and their core of top athletes look to cruise by on an improved Santa Fe Indian (5-1) team.

Week 7 New Mexico HS Football Playoff Watch

6A FOOTBALL

Projected District Champs

Cleveland
La Cueva
Centennial
Scoop: We get to find one of these answers out this weekend with La Cueva taking on Eldorado. It's most likely that one becomes the DC of 2-6A. Cleveland and Rio Rancho will do battle for 1-6A but both are likely the 1-2 seed. Centennial is the favorite and heating up but D 3-6A is unknown for the most part.

At-Large Locks
Rio Rancho
Cibola
Eldorado
Las Cruces
Scoop: Rio Rancho, is a top-2 seed. Cibola and Eldorado are locks. Eldorado more of a lock as they are most likely finishing as a DC or DRUP, we will know that answer at the end of the week. Cibola still has Volcano Vista looking to make an upset. Las Cruces is coming off a nice resume win over Mayfield (potential DC) but they dropped games to Cibola, La Cueva and Cleveland that could have them in the Work Left to Do. They have several teams looking to upset them - Hobbs, Carlsbad, and Organ Mountain - now that district play starts.

Work Left to Do
Hobbs
Carlsbad
Volcano Vista
Santa Fe
Scoop: Teams could still could drop to the OUT group but for today they are IN. Santa Fe will need to finish above Clovis and Sandia to stay here. Volcano Vista has yet to win a resume game but should be fine. Hobbs has a resume win (Lovington-DC) and a quality win over Roswell but they've dropped the last two and will need to finish third, at least, in order to get the 8. Carlsbad has a potential resume win over Artesia but have lost the last two games and face a tough challenge with Las Cruces to open district this week. A win there could shake it up.

Bubble Plus One
Clovis
Organ Mountain
West Mesa
Scoop: Clovis has to be here until they get a win. Organ Mountain will need to upset Carlsbad or Hobbs in order to be the fifth team taken from District 3-6A. West Mesa will float around hoping Organ Mountain stays fifth and/or Clovis falls to one two of the three - Santa Fe, Sandia, Manzano.

Week 7 Bracket
#1 Cleveland
#2 Rio Rancho
#3 La Cueva
#4 Centennial
#5 Cibola vs #12 Clovis
#6 Eldorado vs #11 Santa Fe
#7 Las Cruces vs #10 Carlsbad
#8 Hobbs vs #9 Volcano Vista

#8 Santa Teresa vs #9 Piedra Vista
Next IN: Capital, Valley

Match-ups to Watch
Capital vs Miaymura
Belen vs Valley
Santa Teresa vs Deming
Scoop: All three games are playoff/seed games. For Valley, Capital, and Miyamura they'll play for a playoff spot as we enter district play. Santa Teresa and Deming are playing for a home playoff game. Belen is in position to host a first round game with two seed game wins (PV, Capital) and could go into the playoffs winning 6 of their final 7 games.

3A Football

Projected District Finish (current record)

District 1-3A: Navajo Prep (4-2), Tohatchi (4-2), Zuni (2-3), Newcomb (1-4)
District 2-3A: St. Michael's (4-1), Robertson (5-1), West Las Vegas (5-0), Raton (6-0), SFIS (5-1)
District 3-3A: Socorro (5-1), Cobre (1-5), Hatch Valley (0-6), Hot Springs (5-1)
District 4-3A: Hope Christian (3-3), NMMI (4-1), Dexter (2-2), Tucumcari (1-5)
District 5-3A: Thoreau (2-2), Cuba (2-3), Crownpoint (2-3), Wingate (0-3)

Week 7 Bracket
#1 St. Michael's
#2 Socorro
#3 Robertson
#4 West Las Vegas
#5 Hope Christian vs #12 Thoreau
#6 Raton vs #11 Hatch Valley
#7 NMMI vs #10 Navajo Prep
#8 Dexter vs #9 Cobre

How Did We Get Here: The final bid is up for grabs, maybe final two spots. We projected Hatch Valley moving above others after district play but needs some help - Tohatchi could steal a bid from what is typically a one bid league. SFIS and Tucumcari both still in the conversation and we will keep an eye on their Freeman Rating number. Right now 5-points separates the three, if Hatch beats Hot Springs out for the third slot in that district and SFIS or Tucumcari can't earn a district win, it could effect things. The top-six bids are locks, now we just wait out district play to see in which order. Raton-WLV in week 7 will move things around for next week.

Week 7 Bracket

#1 Jal (DC) vs #8 Estancia (DC)
#2 Eunice (DRUP) vs #7 Capitan (D3P)
#3 Tularosa (DC) vs #6 Santa Rosa (DRUP)
#4 Texico (DC) vs #5 Lordsburg (DRUP)

Autos - Projected Champs - 4
1-2A: Estancia
2-2A: Tularosa
3-2A: Jal
4-2A: Texico

AT-Large Teams - 4
1-2A: --
2-2A: Lordsburg, Capitan
3-2A: Eunice
4-2A: Santa Rosa

Next IN - 2
Escalante: Right now could push another out, like Capitan or another at-large, but also will battle with Estancia for the DC. Escalante is actually ranked higher but we predicted.

Clayton: In a tough spot for a good team but will need to beat one of the other two in this three team district (4-2A with Texico and Santa Rosa)

OUT - 6
Laguna-Acoma, McCurdy, Questa
Mescalero Apache
Hagerman, Loving

Goodbye to a Great Friend

I just learned some tough news today that we lost a great member of the NMPreps community.

I got to really know Tony Anthony over the last six years since taking over NMPreps. We would share emails and texts over the years. The man truly loved high school sports and football. He was truly an amazing man and this one hits big time. Most of you know him by his screen name greenthunder. He was the guy behind the scenes calculating the Pick 'Ems for NMPreps.

Don't forget those friendships, invest in the good ones. Don't forget to reply to that texts or make that return phone call. Never know when the last time you'll talk to someone. I suck at writing and wish I could give a better goodbye but rest easy Tony I appreciated getting to know you, learn about launches from NASA, and just talking high school football.

From the last line I received from Tony. "I can't wait until Friday".

Week 6: Most Intriguing Score from Friday Night

Big Three From Friday Night

1. 5A is going to be battle...and really fun to watch during the playoffs: Los Lunas (17-14 over Goddard) and Roswell (29-21 over Mayfield) answered some big calls on Friday night. The Tigers beating title favorite Goddard at home in a close battle is a resume win for one of the top two seeds in the bracket. Roswell, we felt that they were turning a corner, turned a big one as Lynn doing what he does best - win. Watch out for that district too.

2. We will have a new top team in 4A rankings: The Valencia Jaguars, ranked 12th (NMPreps poll) upset No. 1 Bloomfield, 34-21. The Jaguars with perhaps the biggest win over the night not only secured a playoff spot are making others take a second look as possible DC's. Maybe, that is a little too far or is it? Taos over Bernalillo, 14-7 and Santa Fe Indian 24-14 over Espanola Valley are nice wins too.

3. La Cueva the favorite in District 2 (6A): The Bears with a win over Clovis, 55-13. The Bears and Eldorado are on a course for a DC championship/rivalry game. This one should have a packed crowd. Is Clovis on the verge of being an OUT team in the playoff watch?
