Coach Hess

Coach Jim Hess passed away this past weekend. Former NMSU HC and a great man. For those that didn’t know him the man was a raiser of men and a flat out comedian. He will be missed by those of us who were lucky enough to play for him.
Love ya coach and thanks for giving us a chance.

Rankings the Top Games to Watch During Week 8

RANKING THE TOP 6A GAMES THIS WEEK
  1. Cleveland (6-0, 1-0) at Cibola (3-3, 0-1): The Storm are going to be at least two touchdown favorites but Cibola showed a lot of fight last week against Rio Rancho.
  2. Las Cruces (3-3, 1-0) at Hobbs (3-3, 0-0): This one has playoff implications all over it and a first round home game is on the line.
  3. Clovis (1-4, 1-0) at Santa Fe (5-2, 1-2): Wouldn't it be crazy to read a Santa Fe victory over Clovis? This one lost some hype as Santa Fe was upset last week but Clovis still alive for a playoff bid.
  4. Eldorado (4-3, 2-1) at Manzano (1-4, 0-0): Manzano finally gets the win, can they get an upset win over Eldorado?
  5. Centennial (5-1, 1-0) at Carlsbad (2-4, 0-1): I don't think we will see much here outside of knowing what we already know - Centennial a top-four favorite and Carlsbad continuing to drop come district play.
  6. Sandia (2-4, 1-0) at Albuquerque (2-4, 0-2): The Bulldogs came close to upsetting Clovis, Sandia upset Santa Fe, will we see another shake up.
  7. Organ Mountain (2-3, 0-1) at Gadsden (3-4): This should be a district game but it is good for both squads that we still get it.
  8. Volcano Vista (4-2, 1-0) at Atrisco Heritage (3-3, 0-1): District game but Volcano Vista likely to get a nice jump in district play at 2-0 before facing the top three teams.
  9. Rio Rancho (5-0, 1-0) at West Mesa (2-4, 0-1): We are likely to be home early on Saturday as Rio Rancho is on another level this season.
  10. Rio Grande (0-6) at Santa Teresa (5-1, 0-0): I guess this one counts as a 6A game although Rio is an independent and the fact that Santa Teresa is going to be a 7-touchdown favorite.
RANKING THE TOP 5A GAMES THIS WEEK

  1. Goddard (4-1) at Mayfield (2-4): This one has top-four seed implications to it. Goddard dropped their first game of the season last week and Mayfield still searching for a key win after going (0-4) to ranked teams (NMPreps20).
  2. Piedra Vista (4-3, 1-0) at Capital (3-3, 0-0): This district contest has playoff talk all over it as both are still holding out hope for a first round playoff game.
  3. Roswell (2-4) at Dumas, Texas (2-2): The intriguing part of this game for us is on the Coyotes and their in-season build. They started (0-4) but have back-to-back wins heading into this contest.
  4. Belen (4-2, 1-0) vs Del Norte (1-5, 0-0): Del Norte opens district play this week taking on a Belen team currently riding a four-game win streak. Belen playing for a top-8 seed, Del Norte fighting for their season.
  5. Chaparral (0-6) at Cathedral, Texas (4-2): The Chaparral Lobos are struggling again this season and fighting out of the cellar. Cathedral playing back-to-back games against New Mexico teams after falling to 3A St. Michael's last week.
  6. Miyamura (3-4, 0-1) at Farmington (7-0, 1-0): This one will be done early, it's district time. Farmington has one of the best offensive units in 5A football and the reason they are ranked number one.
  7. Rio Grande (0-6) at Santa Teresa (5-1): Santa Teresa will roll all night in this game as Rio Grande continues to struggle and riding an 8-game losing streak.

THE BEST OF THE REST: 4A - 2A
  1. Jal (5-1) at Eunice (4-2): Yup, this 2A game is the one to watch this week in this section. 1 vs 2. Possible State Championship preview. Put the oil down and find a seat.
  2. Robertson (6-1) at Raton (7-0): Can the Tigers double down against Vegas teams?
  3. Albuquerque Academy (6-1) at Valencia (5-2): DC up for grabs.
  4. Silver (5-1) at Taos (2-4): Is Silver a top-four seed in 4A?
  5. St. Pius X (4-2) at Bernalillo (4-3): Pius a top-four seed and possible DC?
  6. West Las Vegas (5-1) at Dexter (3-2): Playoffs? Who can earn a top-8 seed and host the first round?
  7. Capitan (5-1) at Tularosa (3-0): Tularosa is still ranked third in 2A but we are curious if they can keep it up after a month off of games.
  8. Moriarty (2-3) at Ruidoso (3-3): Is this one taking place?
  9. Thoreau (4-2) at Newcomb (2-4): Thoreau has DC on their mind and the playoffs.
  10. Santa Rosa (3-4) at Clayton (3-3): Playoff chatter and playoff bids up for grabs. Only 4 at-large bids in 2A football open.
  11. Espanola Valley (0-6) at Navajo Prep (4-2): Navajo Prep should move along with ease.
  12. St. Michael's (4-2) at Santa Fe Indian (5-2): Top ranked Horsemen should move along in this one.
  13. Loving (1-6) at Hagerman (3-1): Hagerman earned a nice win last week and hoping for a playoff spot.
  14. Cuba (2-3) at McCurdy (2-4): This one should go in favor of Cuba as district position is at play.
  15. Bloomfield (5-1) at Shiprock (0-6): Done by mercy rule.
  16. Aztec (2-5) at Gallup (0-7): Done by mercy rule
  17. Laguna-Acoma (1-5) at Estancia (3-4): The Estancia Bears are prepping for the playoffs over a struggling Hawks team.
  18. Mecalero Apache (0-5) at Lordsburg (4-1): Should be done by the half.
  19. Zuni (2-3) at Wingate (0-4): District cellar dweller game.
  20. Crownpoint (2-4) vs JV Team: When you need a game.
  21. Questa (0-3) at Escalante (3-3): Is Questa done for the year again?

Post Yours.

Class 5A: Week 8 New Mexico HS Football Playoff Picture

NMPreps weekly look at the New Mexico high school football playoffs. #nmpreps

Ranking the Projected District Champions (current record)
Farmington (7-0, 1-0)
Los Lunas (7-0, 0-0)
Goddard (4-1, 0-0)
Mayfield (2-4, 0-0)

Ranking the Possible At-Large Teams
Roswell (2-4, 0-0)
Artesia (5-2, 0-0)
Belen (4-2, 1-0)
Santa Teresa (5-1, 0-0)
Deming (4-3, 0-0)
Piedra Vista (4-3, 1-0)
Scoop: This is a projection feature, that is why some teams are in higher than others or in different groups. Roswell is our (and has been) the DRUP but don't be shocked if they are the DC. Those three battle each year. Belen and the winner of Santa Teresa/Deming is likely the 7 and 8-seeds, earning a home first-round game.

Ranking the Bubble Teams
Capital (3-3, 0-0)
Alamogordo (2-5, 0-0)
Los Alamos (3-4, 0-1)
Scoop: Capital or Los Alamos will likely eliminate each other when they square off in district play. Alamogordo from district 3 (labeled as 4 but it's really the third district listed) could also be the odd team out here.

Ranking the Likely Out Teams
Miyamura (3-4, 0-1)
Del Norte (1-5, 0-1)
Valley (1-5, 0-1)
Highland (1-5, 0-1)
Scoop: It would take a lot (likely too much) for Miyamura, Valley or Highland at this point. All started 0-1 in district play and for Valley and Miyamura they each lost to a team that they had to "MUST WIN" against in Belen and Piedra Vista.

Ranking the Out
Chaparral (0-6, 0-0)
Scoop: More teams will join this one team band.

Week 8 Projected Bracket
#1 Farmington
#2 Los Lunas
#3 Goddard
#4 Roswell
#5 Artesia vs #12 Alamogordo
#6 Mayfield vs #11 Capital
#7 Santa Teresa vs #10 Piedra Vista
#8 Belen vs #9 Deming

6A Football: Week 8 Playoff Picture

Projected District Champs
Cleveland (6-0, 1-0)
La Cueva (6-1, 3-0)
Centennial (5-1, 1-0)
Scoop: La Cueva pretty much the lock for the DC of 2-6A. Cleveland and Rio Rancho will be on the final night for that DC and likely playing for who will be the 1-seed and the 2-seed of the state playoffs. Centennial is still the favorite but Las Cruces will do battle.

At-Large Locks
Rio Rancho (5-0, 1-0)

Work Left to Do
Cibola (3-3, 0-1)
Las Cruces (3-3, 1-0)
Volcano Vista (4-2, 1-0)
Eldorado (4-3, 2-1)
Hobbs (3-3, 0-0)
Sandia (2-4, 1-1)
Scoop: Sandia has life, and moved up into this group. Next week we could have a lock game when Sandia and Eldorado square off. Volcano Vista moved into this group as well and likely one of the better teams that could be on the road in the first round. Hobbs is hanging on and will need at least a third place finish.

Bubble
Carlsbad (2-4, 0-1)
Santa Fe (5-2, 1-2)
Clovis (1-4, 1-1)
Organ Mountain (2-3, 0-1)
Scoop: Carlsbad and Santa Fe drop into the Bubble group and it could be tough to get out of this group at this point. Clovis had some life with their first win, a win over Santa Fe is needed but it still could be tough to earn a bid this season. Organ Mountain will need to take out Hobbs and Carlsbad but it might not be enough.

Out
West Mesa (2-4, 0-1)
Albuquerque (2-4, 0-2)
Manzano (1-4, 0-1)
Atrisco Heritage (3-3, 0-1)

Week 8 Bracket
#1 Cleveland
#2 Rio Rancho
#3 La Cueva
#4 Centennial
#5 Cibola vs #12 Santa Fe
#6 Las Cruces vs #11 Carlsbad
#7 Volcano Vista vs #10 Sandia
#8 Hobbs vs #9 Eldorado

2022/2023, 2023/2024 Classification and District Alignment

Teams are likely moving up.

They’ll stay with the same format 6A, 5A etc.

I don’t expect a lot of changes outside of some teams moving up.

What are your thoughts?

I’d love a north and south region instead of districts one day. Also, make them all the same and look like the football classifications with 6 classes.

Danni Williams - 2015 Clovis Grad

I haven't been on here in several years and just realized I had an active account. Thus, thought I would give a quick update on Danni. Danni graduated from Texas A&M in 3 years and chose to grad-transfer to the University of Texas. While playing for A&M in the SEC Danni set several A&M records and was named all-SEC her sophomore year. She chose to transfer to the University of Texas for her senior season and take advantage of the opportunity to play in the BIG12. Ultimately injuries to what was predicted to be a final 4 roster took their toll. Danni had a very good season averaging 11 points and was named to all-Big12. For her career she played in 135 games (3,994 minutes), starting 104; every game after her freshman season. She scored 1,539 points while hitting 219 3's. Also of note, she played in 4 NCAA Tournaments and was invited to not only the National High School 3 point shootout but, the National Collegiate 3 point shootout hosted by the NCAA at the final four. She has since played in Puerto Rico, Iceland, Spain, Romania, and is currently in France. Unfortunately COVID, like many Americans, has had an impact on here professional career. She was diagnosed with COVID shorty after arriving in Romania and ultimately had to return home. She was off for almost a year but, is very excited to be back playing.

Week 7: What Did We Learn this Week

BIG THREE FROM WEEK 7

The Upsets Did Happen......
From 2A, the Hagerman Bobcats (No. 11) evened their record with a 40-13 win over 6th ranked Clayton (3-3). The other upset that night was No. 10 Estancia beating 5th ranked Santa Rosa, 20-14. What does that mean for the landscape of 2A football? Well, are we likely to see a Jal and Eunice title game or will a team like Tularosa and Texico make way. For now we are certain that two of these four are most likely to play for the title but don't sleep on an underdog (5th-10th) to win the title. It'll be interesting to see who gets the final two spots.

Can we project with certainty of who will be a District Champ (DC)..... La Cueva beat Eldorado 41-0 on Friday night and that is our answer for the DC in 2-6A. Rio Rancho and Cleveland on the final night is a District Championship game - 1-6A. Farmington will go into the post season perfect from 1-4A. Back to 6A, Las Cruces and/or Centennial are most likely. Hobbs still somewhat in the convo but it'll be a wait and see. Carlsbad losing 42-13 lost the steam that they had early.

Battle for November.... Bubbles popped this week; Santa Fe, Carlsbad, Valley, and Bernalillo. Portales is on the fringe of being completely out after falling to Dexter, 25-21. The Portales Rams will have to upset a team in district play or make sure that they finish at the very least third but that might not be enough still.

SUNDAY STUDS

Class President: Zach Vigil, RB (2022/Rio Rancho HS): We had him as the top-ranked RB entering the season and he delivered on Friday night with 339-yards rushing with 4-touchdowns.

Vice President: Joseph Perez, LB-TE (2022/Lovington HS): Well, how could we not pick Perez who on top of 10 tackles, a fumble recovery and an offensive TD won homecoming king!

Treasure: Juan Fuentes, K-RB (2022/Dexter HS): Kicked a 45-yard FG on Friday night in a big win over Portales. Fuentes does it all for the Demons; he's thrown a passing TD, he's rushed or over 6-touchdowns, has over 100-yards receiving, and kicks the ball.

Saturday Morning Coffee: What to Watch Today

Schedule
Belen at Valley (M), 1pm
Bernalillo at Albuquerque Academy, 7pm
Capital at Rio Grande, 1pm
Hope Christian at Pojoaque Valley, 1pm

Game to Watch: Bernalillo (4-2) nearly dropped a 50-burger on the Chargers during the Spring winning 43-0. Well, the Chargers are 5-1 on the season enter the game with some hype much deserved hype with the hot start. This is the first home game at night and led by 2023 quarterback Andres Rivera the 5th ranked Chargers are looking to continue climbing the rankings. Watch for the Spartan defense to play an x-factor in this one behind Kavin Chavez and Jahvon Maes McChriston. Prediction: Albuquerque Academy 23, Bernalillo 20. Line: AA -3.5.

More Saturday Lines & Predictions
Academy (-3.5) over Bernalillo
Belen (-18.5) over Valley
Capital (-41.5) over Rio Grande
Hope Christian (-49.5) over Pojoaque Valley

Last Night
Raton 14, West Las Vegas 7: This one didn't provide the offensive fireworks that we expected but it did show that we are in for a playoff showdown with 5-7 teams vying for the 3A title. Cayden Walton led the way for Raton with the only two touchdowns for the Tigers, including the fourth quarter go-ahead TD form 5-yards out.

Coffee: Folks, I've always been a black coffee drinker. So don’t judge with what I am going to write. Yes, I drink coffee again, on Saturdays only, and I've enjoyed a new creamer - Oatmilk. Just a small dash, It's good. Anyhow, not much in terms of surprises from last night and a quiet night for the most part. Organ Mountain and Cibola both had us going early, both taking 14-7 leads early in the first half. Both would end up falling, Organ Mountain 52-14 to Centennial and Cibola 65-35 to Rio Rancho.
