Five Early Preseason Candidates for the 2021 New Mexico Mr. Football

Five Early Preseason Candidates for the 2021 New Mexico Mr. Football

NMPreps and Rivals is home to the New Mexico Mr. Football award. Since 2006 NMPreps has been home to the ultimate stop for New Mexico high school athletics and we continue. New Mexicans talking New Mexico sports!

Today, we look at five early candidates for the award given to the most valuable player each season.

Stratton Shufelt
2024, LB-TE, Cleveland High School
Scoop: Shufelt hit the scene during the spring and earned a quick offer from D-1 UNM. The sophomore sensation will be a big target as the revamped Cleveland Storm look to keep the title in Rio Rancho despite the graduation of a handful of next-level players, including the 2020 New Mexico Mr. Football award winner Luke Wysong (University of New Mexico). Teammate watch: Evan Wysong (ATH/2023)

Zach Vigil
2022, RB, Rio Rancho High School
Scoop: The top-ranked running back in the state as we enter the 2021 New Mexico high school football season. Vigil has been a must-watch since hitting the scene as a super quick, explosive sophomore running back now turns into the senior with all eyes on him. That includes defenses and what should be next-level schools. Expect him to return to 2019 form when he rushed for 1,253-yards and 18-touchdowns for an 8-win Rams team. Teammate Watch: Deven Dyer (LB/2022) *transferred to La Cueva HS

Javyn Morales
2023, RB, Goddard High School
Scoop: Morales is one that we really liked when we had a glimpse of the 2023 prospect. The top-ranked RB in 5A football could have plenty more eyes on the prospect and we hope the justice of getting more highlights on him is done. Morales hits holes quickly and has great cutting and change of direction. Teammate watch: Adrian Vega (QB/2022).

Aden Chavez
2023, QB, Cibola High School
Scoop: We couldn't start the conversation for 2021 New Mexico Mr. Football without adding the top-ranked quarterback in the state. Chavez returns as one of the most talked-about prospects in the state and for good reason. Remember he threw for over 500-yards and 5 touchdowns in just a pair of games this Spring. Hasn't been this much talk of a QB in some time and the last big-time QBs really showed out. Love the young man's character, demeanor, and obviously his arm and decision-making. Teammate Watch: Brayden Mummert (TE/2023)

Colton Gililland
2022, ATH, Tularosa High School
Scoop: Not many prospects from the small school division but Gililland looks to put his name among the rest. Also, the Wildcats have a chance to be a player in 2A football this season and his status could only grow. The 6-foot-3 prospect rushed for 382-yards, passed for another 227, and totaled for 5 touchdowns during a four-game Spring schedule. Teammate watch: Ricky Bryant (ATH/2024)

Note: We will release more names throughout the week. Join the conversation though and give your candidates.

Grine's Saturday Morning Coffee: Reviewing Last Night

Grine's Saturday Morning Coffee: Reviewing Last Night

Well, I got home at 1:30am and now here we are at 4am to take a look at what took place across the state. This feature will update throughout the day and into Sunday as more stats and information comes through. Don't be shy to send a text with some stats, if you don't want to post them. BTW, I would update with the type of coffee I am drinking but I've since stopped drinking coffee, so a tall glass of ice water. Also, no this is not your typical recap. We like to do it unconventional around here and allow you the chance to give your thoughts on the night as well.

Here we go....

Recap: Intriguing Scores

We always ask the question of 'most intriguing score'. Well, here are some of the reasons that we picked the games that we did in our poll (check out Anthony Johnson's thread)

Rio Rancho and Los Lunas with shutouts. I didn't see that happening in either game. Yes, Los Lunas is darn good and a heavy favorite but not 50-0. The Rams of Rio Rancho.....well they were completely dominate against the La Cueva Bears. I guess we have our 1 and 2 in the City of Vision (Rio Rancho) and third contender well that could be a huge gap after. This is after two weeks of ‘what we know’.

Robertson with a monster rebound win over Cobre, 46-0. Maybe, the cross-state travel for the Cobre Indians was a little too much. Or Maybe the Cardinals are just that good in 3A.

Gadsden, we had to put Gadsden, because when was the last time they every mercy ruled a team? I would lean on never but you can do the fact checking. Remember I quit coffee.

Goddard over Carlsbad. Not because we didn't think they would win but maybe we expected it to be a closer game. Right now just because it's still early but Goddard-Los Lunas final is getting to my way too early prediction. Yes, Mayfield, Farmington, and Artesia we know you are there too.

Los Alamos Hilltoppers are 2-0 with a win over Taos, 35-24. Yes, you read that correctly. Kudos to that program for what looks to be a promising season. Playoffs?...que the Jim Mora playoffs meme.

Lovington with a big win over Roswell. Roswell is rebuild and having a down year we know but still a nice win for the Wildcats. Looking at Santa Teresa's win over Fabens (TX) and maybe the Wildcats close win over them isn't looking too bad now.

Organ Mountain. Gosh, I just think it is a weird name to say. Off topic. The Knights with a big win over Deming and by Tuesday morning we could see a ranked Knights team.

Artesia, well I sort of had that feeling. They lose to Carlsbad, Hobbs wins a big game, but then Artesia beats Hobbs. Do we know end up seeing Hobbs beat Carlsbad and we just have a you beat them, we beat you, you beat them. Nice win though!

Cibola Cougars get the win over Las Cruces. We know have a group (Cibola, Volcano Vista, Las Cruces, La Cueva), we need a name for them, as the group on the next tier down from those Rio schools. Oh yeah Hobbs, Eldorado, and Centennial maybe in that tier too.

I did see Farmington live last night. First time to Hutchinson Stadium. Thing is awesome. The Scops are good. Defensive line was tough. Kayden Gonzalez (2022) is a heck of a punt returner. Trel Griego (2024) remember that name at QB next season. Jakeem Reed (RB/2023) and Patrick Shay (WR/2022). Furbee (QB) played solid especially when they have open space.

Weekly Recap Nominations

Bringing back our full weekly what did we learn. I need stats and updates for our All-New Mexico team, Honor Roll Team, and also individual awards.

Friday Night: Week 2 New Mexico HS Football Preview & Predictions

Top-25 Schedule
#1 Cleveland vs EP-Franklin: The Storm are coming off an impressive opening win. EP-Franklin opens their season after a 2-6 year in 2020 and bring back Shay Smith (2023) who threw for 383-yards. Prediction: Cleveland 38, EP Franklin 35

#2 Rio Rancho at #3 La Cueva: 2vs3 this week as we search for the first contender to the Storm of Rio Rancho. Rio Rancho opens the season while La Cueva is looking to build off a win in the opening week. Aidan Armenta (QB/2023) and Exodus Ayers (ATH/2023) continue to shine and make the Bears the top contender? Prediction: Rio Rancho 31, La Cueva 24

#4 Las Cruces at #8 Cibola: Welcome Dallas Boyd (QB/2022) to the scene for the Dawgs as QB-1. The Bulldawgs looking to build off an upset win last week. Are they now in the conversation for another run at a title shot? Cibola will look to rebound off the loss last week. Prediction: Las Cruces 28, Cibola 20

#6 Carlsbad at #13 Goddard: Oh the excitment in this game. It gives us Javyn Morales (2023/RB) of Goddard vs Carlsbad's rising stud in QB Dane Naylor (2023). Prediction: Carlsbad 26, Goddard 24

#7 Hobbs at #16 Artesia: Artesia is coming off a loss to Carlsbad and will take on Hobbs on the rise. Nathaniel Taylor (2022) got the call at quarterback for the Bulldogs and will look to a rebound win. Hobbs riding high off a win over rival Clovis will look to make a 2-0 start. Colton Graham (2022) with over 200-yards all purpose last week. Prediction: Hobbs 30, Artesia 24

The Rest of the 25
#10 Farmington vs Belen: Farmington is the top ranked 5A team, FHS -21.5

#14 Los Lunas vs #21 Alamogordo: Tiger King in Los Lunas. LL -14.5

#22 Piedra Vista vs Valley: Valley heads north as the Panthers look to recover from a loss last week, PV-5.5
#24 Santa Fe at Moriarty: SFHS is ranked in the top-25 for the first time and they look to stay but watch the backs for the Pintos, SFHS -16
#25 Capital vs St. Michael's: Is Capital legit for the 25? St. Michael's continue their winning ways over the Jaguars? Prediction: St. Mikes -8.5

Outside the Top-25
Socorro at Miyamura: Both teams won their opener and Miyamura peaked the interest after a hot start. Socorro still the top dog in 3A?

Ruidoso vs EP-Mountain View: The Warriors are considered a contender in 4A football, they open the season tonight.

Silver at Hatch Valley: The long two-way road to Hatch for the Colts. Should win but do the Bears make it interesting.

Cobre at Robertson: Cobre might have left already if they are heading all of the way to Las Vegas. How good is Cobre and is Robertson rebuilding after a year away?

Jal at Raton: No other game has my interest more than this one. I will be looking at this one as a tell all but it does feature some next level talent on both sidelines.
