Jacob Pino, QB (2023)

Week 4 New Mexico HS Football Playoff Picture

How we did it
Projected District Finish
Head to Head (after three weeks)
Current Rating (and projected movement with district projection)

6A FOOTBALL
#1 Cleveland (Bye)
#2 Rio Rancho (Bye)
#3 Centennial (Bye)
#4 La Cueva (Bye)
#5 Cibola vs #12 Santa Fe
#6 Eldorado vs #11 Clovis
#7 Las Cruces #10 Carlsbad
#8 Hobbs vs #9 Volcano Vista

First Out: Sandia

Figuring it Out: Centennial moved into our favorite from the southern district and pushes them to a potential three seed. La Cueva has the edge on Cibola and Las Cruces and we predict them beating out Eldorado.

5A FOOTBALL
#1 Goddard (Bye)
#2 Los Lunas (Bye)
#3 Farmington (Bye)
#4 Mayfield (Bye)
#5 Artesia vs #12 Capital
#6 Piedra Vista vs #11 Belen
#7 Deming vs #10 Santa Teresa
#8 Roswell vs #9 Alamogordo

First Out: Valley

Figuring it Out: Roswell is the big question mark here. If they finish third, beating Alamogordo during district play they could likely be a 2/3-win team with a first round home game. Tough schedule indeed but they could be looking at an over/under of 2.5 wins at this point. More to shake out with the 10-12 teams along with outsiders Valley, Los Alamos and Miyamura.

4A FOOTBALL
#1 Lovington (Bye)
#2 Bloomfield (Bye)
#3 Albuquerque Academy (Bye)
#4 Ruidoso (Bye)
#5 Silver vs #12 Pojoaque Valley
#6 St. Pius X vs #11 Valencia
#7 Bernalillo vs #10 Kirtland Central
#8 Moriarty vs #9 Portales

First Out: Grants

Figuring it Out: First, let's start with our district champions - Lovington, Bloomfield, Abq Academy, and Moriarty. Moriarty may be the only potential DC on the road in the first round with Portales potentially (likely) winning their next five games. Portales needs the 9.17 game against SPX and they are going to get a first round home game plus the Rams could still end up finishing 1-4 in that district. Here is what we know in 4A. Lovington is very good, Bloomfield continues to excel (we were wrong that they would be rebuilding), and spots 3-12 could shake up by the week.

Friday 2-Minute Drill: New Mexico HS Football Preview

NMPreps week three preview for New Mexico high school football. No need to regurgitate what all others do but we give the lines, predictions and best quick views of each game in New Mexico. #nmpreps

Friday, September 3rd
  • Artesia (-35) at Belen: Artesia and company look to move along against the shorthanded and young Belen Eagles (0-2). Senior quarterback Nate Taylor and Jake Barrera are top players in the state and will have eyes on them.
  • Atrisco Heritage at Piedra Vista (-3.5): Atrisco Heritage finally gets a game, PV is 1-1 on the year but could be in a rebuild mode.
  • Bloomfield (-18.5) at Grants: Ryan Sharpe has filled in well for the Bobcats this season, and has the team at 2-0 with over 200 all purpose yards per game.
  • Capitan at Estancia (-1): I like this matchup this week with Capitan at 2-0 and the Estancia Bears coming into it at 1-1. Gabe Hays (CHS) and Ja'brae Boyer (EHS) are the names to know.
  • Carrizozo at Lake Arthur, NL: Carrizozo will try to get a dub this season as the travel to Lake Arthur for their first game.
  • Clovis at Frenship, TX (-10): Can Milo Acosta (QB) and the Cats shake off a 0-2 start to the season?
  • Cobre at Silver (-10.5)
  • Deming at Goddard (-28.5): Jayvn Morales (RB/Goddard) is a stud and our second ranked RB. Deming also has a top ten ranked RB in Vega.
  • Dulce at Melrose, NL: Melrose is the small school power hosting the Dulce Hawks. They are 10-1 since 2019.
  • Eldorado at Rio Rancho (-14.5): Rio Rancho QB Dominick Priddy caught our attention and has partnered well with top-ranked RB Zac Vigil. Eldorado and Elias Franco (QB) look to get that BIG upset of the season.
  • Farmington (-43.5) at Highland: The Hornets are struggling and will try to keep this one alive until half against the number one 5A team in New Mexico and QB-WR duo of Furbee and Shay.
  • Gadsden at Santa Teresa (-12): Gadsden (1-1) had their first shutout win in (trivia Friday: since when) a long time. Santa Teresa at 1-1 has stud Julian Cobos to keep an eye on this season.
  • Gateway Christian at Elida, NL: These two have provided us with some nice games recently, Elida (1-1) is coming off a nice win last week. Gateway (2-0) is averaging over 55 points per game.
  • Hot Springs at Lordsburg (-14.5): Lordsburg (2-0) has Maverick Contreras (QB) who is averaging nearly 300 passing yards per game. Hot Springs (1-1) look to get things going with ATH Devin Gonzalez; he is averaging nearly 150-all purpose yards.
  • Kirtland Central (-12.5) at Taos: This is a playoff contender/pretender feeling to it.
  • Laguna-Acoma at Santa Fe Indian (-3): A coin flip game between the two, historically the SFIS Braves have LA athletes that provides some sort of rivalry feeling.
  • Los Alamos (-3) at Bernalillo: If you like 4A football, this one has some fun, playoff worthy conversation to it.
  • Los Lunas (-32.5) at West Mesa: Paul Cieremans (QB/LL) has the Tigers rolling right now and are likely to roll against 0-2 West Mesa.
  • Loving (-7.5) at Tucucmari: Another somewhat coin flip of a game here as the Rattlers host a road trppin' Loving Falcons.
  • Lovington (+6.5) at Alamogordo: The Wildcats had an impressive showing last week while the Alamogordo Tigers look to rebound off a big loss last week. Player of the week Wyatt Gomez (QB/LVHS) will have eyes in his follow up game.
  • Magdalena at Tatum, NL: This one could provide us with a quality small school match up. Tatum enters 1-1 in the game with Mag opening their season.
  • Manzano at Cleveland (-44): Cleveland has plenty of next level talent - Wysong, Shufelt, and Perry . Manzano and Jared Melfi (QB) will try to get things moving along but 0-3 is likely.
  • Mescalero Apache at Clayton (-22): The Clayton Yellowjackets are tough this year and could run the ball all over the 0-2 Mescalero Apache squad.
  • Miyamura (-16.5) at Gallup: The Patriots (1-1) own this rivalry and after suffering a loss last week look to take some aggression out on crosstown Bengals (0-2).
  • Moriarty (-6.5) at Capital: Moriarty is favored however, this is more like a NL/Pick game. Should see a lot of running in this one.
  • Navajo Prep at Escalante (-1.5): Watch Kyler Clisto (NP) in this game as the Eagles look to go 3-0. Escalante (1-0) and Isaac Archuleta (ATH) are coming off a quality win in their opener.
  • Organ Mountain at Mayfield (-13.5): Mayfield coming off a loss will look to back Calvin Cox as the Knights of Organ Mountain looking to start 3-0 for the first time in a very long time (Friday trivia: do you know how long?)
  • Reserve at Ramah, NL: Ramah is 1-0 on the season and Reserve opens their season.
  • Rio Grande at Valencia (-22.5): Valencia should roll in this one, look for NMPreps150 prospect Jonathon Croker (OL/DL) in this game.
  • Roswell at Hobbs (-15.5): The Hobbs defense of Kenyon Singleton and Jesus Maganda will try to get the Hobbs Eagles back on the winning side.
  • Sandia at Centennial (-8.5): Malachi Thymes (RB) is a back that hit the radar after a big week one and will look to guide Sandia (1-0). Centennial looks to leaders Ethan Estrada (LB) and company to improve to 1-1 on the year.
  • Santa Rosa at Robertson (-14.5): Robertson and quarterback Matthew Gonzales (QB) look to get Robertson to 2-1.
  • St. Michael's at Santa Fe (-1.5): The SF Demons are improved but can they finally get one over on St. Michael's is what we are all looking at in this game. Luc Jaramillo (SF) and Lucas Coriz (SM) gives us a QB battle to watch.
  • Trinidad, CO at Raton, NL: Raton and their four horsemen of Walton (QB), D. Quartieri (RB), M. Quartieri (DEF), and Devon Ramirez (DEF) look to start 3-0.
  • West Las Vegas at Portales (-11.5): Running back Damian Gallegos (WLV) is averaging over 100-rushing yards per game and looks to get a win over top-ranked Portales.
  • Zuni at Crownpoint (-8.5): Crownpoint should cover over a struggling Zuni squad.
