Week 2 New Mexico HS Football Preview & Predictions

Thursday, August 26th

Rio Grande (0-0) at Atrisco Heritage (1-0):
The season official opens for both teams tonight as the Atrisco Heritage Jaguars will be led by quarterback Myles Lane (2023), a junior that will look to carry the Jaguars far this season. Rio Grande an unknown (not even a roster listed) will look to better an 0-2 Spring season that had them outscored 77 to 6. Pick: Atrisco Heritage. Line: AH -33.5

No. 9 Volcano Vista (0-1) at Manzano (0-1): Both teams looking for their first win of the season after suffering a loss during opening weekend. Volcano Vista will be led by rising prospect Josh Gerardo (QB/2022) who is coming off an impressive showing at QB-1 with 284-yards and three touchdowns last week. Jared Melfi (QB/2022) and Alejandro Alvarado (WR/2022) look to connect again this weekend for a shot at an upset against another top-25 team. Pick: Volcano Vista. Line: VV -19.5

West Las Vegas (1-0) at Santa Rosa (0-1): One of the teams that has peaked the interest is the West Las Vegas Dons of 3A football with their rising quarterback in CJ Perea. The freshman quarterback threw for 165 yards, 2 touchdowns along with rushing for another 73. They also have a two-headed monster with running back Damien Gallegos (2022). Santa Rosa comes into the contest after suffering a 45-12 loss to Dexter during the opening week. Pick: West Las Vegas. Line: WL -15.5

5 Most Likely to Upset in Week Two

Well, we are back for another week of checking out what is essentially the closest projected games this week. We were right on three of the five last week. #nmpreps

1. #13 Goddard vs #6 Carlsbad
Scoop: For two weeks we have the Cavemen on the list. Is this the start of them proving us wrong over and over or will the top team with plenty of hype come in for an upset?

2. Organ Mountain vs #19 Deming
Scoop: The Knights of Organ Mountain won as an underdog last week but this week they look to take on a top-25 team in Deming and the task of an upset is greater. Can they do it again?

3. #3 La Cueva vs #2 Rio Rancho
Scoop: Typically we won't pick two teams so closely ranked to each other. However, this one brings a La Cueva team that wasn't a preseason favorite by many and with their week one upset have been the early riser. Can they do it again?

4. #15 Mayfield vs #5 Eldorado
Scoop: The Mayfield Trojans looked solid in their opener last week and another opportunity to beat an APS team. The Eldorado Eagles are still trying to make believers. This one will gives us more answers on who is a true contender for a title run, but who?

5. St. Michael's vs #25 Capital
Scoop: Will it be one and done for the Capital Jaguars in the Top-25? St. Michael's brings one of the top quarterbacks in the state and Capital is looking to build off a big week one road win.

Every single sport indoor and outdoor, vaccinated or not will be mask wearing.

Back to the red, orange, yellow and green map.

Right now all in red outside of four counties

If move to orange or better vaccinated will not have to wear mask in low risk sports only. High risked (football, volleyball) are still mask wearing.

Shema97 masks are not allowed.
Thanks

Band - is high risk. Have to use the covers etc from last year.

Red/Orange - all students/staff/spectators must all wear a mask for indoor & outdoor sports.

Coach Griego

Great, great man. I will miss him and he is definitely on my mind today.

As an opposing coach for one year I was surprised that even right before we played each other he talked strategy with me and helped me grow as a coach. I have a lot of respect for him. The words his daughter mentioned in the AJ today. "He was a perfect dad." hit hard.

RIP Coach Griego

4A Basketball: Preseason Rankings for the 2022 Season

NMPreps.com's way-too-early team rankings for the 2021/2022 New Mexico high school basketball season. #nmpreps

NO. 29 AZTEC TIGERS
2021 Record: 0-8 overall, 0-6 in district
Returning Players: Lane Morgan (2022), Isaiah Parra (2022), Aiden Lee (2022), and Skyler Bouren (2022)
Notes: The Tigers struggled during head coach Ryan Dee's first season at the helm. The former middle school coach was left with a bare cupboard and could be a while until they crawl out of the cellar. They were outscored 526 to 365 during the winless season. Also, the Tigers only return four players off the 12-man roster from last season.
