Ryan Stovall (Alamogordo HS/2023) Stovall will lead the Tigers' defense and could be a big name to know by the end of the season.

Isaac Hinson (Lovington HS/2022) The dynamic receiver for the Wildcats hits the field looking to keep the Wildcats at the top of the 4A rankings.

Week One Most Likely to Upset

Top 5 Most Likely to Upset Games for Week One
Las Cruces (No. 8) over Volcano Vista (No. 4)
Hobbs (No. 11) over Clovis (No. 5)
La Cueva (No. 6) over Cibola (No. 3)
Roswell (No. 16) over Farmington (No. 12)
Artesia (No. 15) over Carlsbad (No. 9)

Scoop: When we say most likely to upset we are thinking of some close contests between teams. We haven't put our predictions or game lines out yet but these are five games to watch on the upset radar.

Rivals: Artesia and Carlsbad will likely always be on the list as the two battle it out each season for the Eddy County Rivalry. Hobbs came close last season at Clovis and will look to upset the Wildcats on Friday night. We could see another low-scoring battle in this one.

First Timer: Cibola is sitting at number three to enter the season, their highest ranking in the top-25. La Cueva went 0-3 in the Spring but return a talented and somewhat underrated roster. Cibola has their studs. This is the game to see this week.

Just Don't Know: Las Cruces and Roswell are a pair of question marks teams heading into the season. Both are powers in their classification but lost some key pieces the last three years and could be in a development year. Cruces will host fourth-ranked Volcano Vista while Roswell hosts the top team in 5A - Farmington. It is a long trip for the number one team and Roswell, well Roswell in Roswell and under Lynn have become the team to beat in 5A.

If I Had to Pick (and I do): The odds are not in the favor as Clovis has owned this game, winning like 20 of 21 games (I didn't fact check) however, I think I am going with the Eagles.

What favorite will fall in week one?

Rankings

Ranking the Top 14 Games in Week 1

  1. La Cueva (0-0) vs Cibola (0-0)
  2. Volcano Vista (0-0) at Las Cruces (0-0)
  3. Farmington (0-0) at Roswell (0-0)
  4. Artesia (0-0) at Carlsbad (0-0)
  5. Hobbs (0-0) at Clovis (0-0)
  6. Raton (0-0) at Eunice (0-0)
  7. Cleveland (0-0) vs (Centennial (0-0)
  8. Los Lunas (0-0) at Piedra Vista (0-0)
  9. St. Pius X (0-0) at Bloomfield (0-0)
  10. St. Michael's (0-0) at Taos (0-0)
  11. Estancia (0-0) at Hatch Valley (0-0)
  12. Santa Rosa (0-0) at Dexter (0-0)
  13. Robertson (0-0) at Santa Fe (0-0)
  14. Texico (0-0) at Jal (0-0)
Deal/No Deal: We can get an early shift in the NMPreps 6A Team Rankings with three top-ten matchups. Las Cruces (No. 8) and Volcano Vista (No. 4) gives a battle of two teams that have a shot at a semifinal spot, Volcano
brings a senior loaded team while the Bulldawgs have a revamped roster after suffering losses to graduation.

Top Game: The La Cueva Bears (No. 6) feature a very underrated roster of next-level talent and the Cibola Cougars (No. 3) enter with their highest rank ever. The Cougars also feature the top-ranked quarterback in Aden Chavez and you can turn up Tupac's "All Eyes on Me" because we are all waiting to see this game.

Power Shift: The Roswell Coyotes (No. 5) are technically still the defending champ but the Farmington Scorpions (No. 1) could also claim that title. Roswell winner of the 2018 and 2019 state championships while Farmington went 5-0 and winner of the 5A Elite Bowl during the Spring. Roswell will feature a handful of new prospects on the board while Farmington brings a high-powered offense - could become a shootout.

Love Thy Neighbor: Carlsbad (No. 9) and Artesia (No. 4) square off in the Eddy County Rivalry. The Cavemen have plenty of excitement returning this season and could be a dark horse in 6A football. Artesia enters the Jeremy Maupin era and we wait to see how the Dogs rebound after two under .500 seasons. Staying on the eastern side of the state Hobbs (No. 11) travels to Clovis (No. 5) with hopes of getting upset this season after a close call during the Spring.

Most Intriguing Game: Raton and Eunice will square off in small-school football, creating a matchup of two very talented squads. Eunice has been key lately while the Raton Tigers bring a very talented roster. This one has piqued our interest the most and could end up the game of the week. Eunice will be going through a reload but years of winning should spill over into the year.

TOP-25

No. 19 Sandia (0-0) at Valley (0-0), 7PM: The Sandia Matadors enter year three under head coach Chad Adcox. The Matadors went 1-1 during the Spring and feature a handful of new players. ATH Jacob Miranda (2022), Marshall Allen (2022/TE), Drew McClish (2023/WR), and Malachi Thymes (2022/RB). They also feature key players Franklin Finch (2023/OL), Elijah Diggs (2022/OL), and Jerome Nieto (2022/OL) on an experienced offensive line. The Valley Vikings went 2-1 during the Spring and hope to build off the wins after a winless 2019 campaign. They return quarterback Caden Jojola (2023) who threw for nearly 600-yards and 5-touchdowns during the Spring. James Akins (2023/RB), Ezekiel Ramos (2023/WR-CB), Charles Lopez-Burton (2023/WR-LB) and Isaiah Gutierrez (2023/WR-CB) also return from a very talented 2023 class that earned valuable experience during the Spring. The key will be replacing the offensive line from last season.
NMPreps Prediction: Sandia 22, Valley 20
Grine: Sandia
Line: Sandia 2.5

MORE

Albuquerque Academy (0-0) at Tohatchi (0-0). 6PM: The Albuquerque Academy Chargers return an offensive unit that went 2-2 and put nearly 69 points and with a QB-WR combination that features three leading returners. Tyler Wilson (2022-WR), Kellan Gehres (2023-WR), and Mark McIntosh (2022-WR) had 517 receiving yards in 4 games. Tohatchi returns after going a surprisingly 5-0 during the Spring. Tohatchi returns a core of key players on offense as well with quarterback DeAngelo Hunch (2022), running back Blane Long (2022), and receiver Bradley Bitsie (2022).
NMPreps Prediction: Albuquerque Academy 24, Tohatchi 8
Grine: Academy
Line: AA -15.5

HIghland (0-0) at West Las Vegas (0-0), 7PM: We officially will have football for both teams that had to make week one adjustments. West Las Vegas returns to play for the first time since 2019 and Highland returns with perhaps the youngest varsity squad in the state featuring 14-freshmen on a 20-man roster. Both teams are essentially unknown but look for these key prospects to shine - West Las Vegas' CJ Perea (QB/2025) and Damian Gallegos (2022/RB). Highland features senior Abraham Lopez a ranked linebacker.
NMPreps Prediction: West Las Vegas 33, Highland 6
Grine: West Las Vegas
Line: WLV -20

Highland Football. APS Scheduling Needs Change

Highland forfeiting vs Eldorado. This makes total sense if you see that Highland only has 20 kids and a lot of freshmen. What sucks about this is that Kenny Barreras and APS scheduled this game in the first place. He needs to let each school start making the schedule. His office does a horrible job of it. Last years Rio Grande girls basketball team was another example of it. They had only 2 seniors and wanted to play a JV schedule only. But because they had seniors they didn’t let them. Well they ended up getting beat by 50+ points most nights and ended up forfeiting the second half of their schedule. Bad leadership at the top if you ask me. Make better decisions for kids

4A New Mexico HS Football Preseason Rankings

NMPreps preview all four districts in New Mexico high school football Class 4A. Now, we take a look at the rankings from top to bottom as we kick off the 2021 season today.

1.) Lovington Wildcats (last season: 4-1 overall)
The Lovington Wildcats are returning as the 4A Bowl State Champions, a 37-19 win over Bloomfield High School. Head coach Anthony Gonzales continues to rebuild this once power into one of the top programs in 4A football again. Looking forward to the 2021 season the Wildcats have some holes to fill with a great group going out. Those positions will be at quarterback, running back, and also some upfront. Key pieces returning will be a three-headed monster at receiver in Isaac Hinson (2021), Adam Aguilera (2021), and Tayten Hillard (2021).

2.) Portales Rams (last season: 4-1 overall)
The Portales Rams were arguably the second-best team in 4A football last season behind Lovington. The Rams went 4-1 overall and 16-2 over the two last two seasons; in 2019 they won the last official state championship in this classification. It's no doubt that head coach Jaime Ramirez is at the top of the list of top head coaches in the state and classification. He will have to again replace some weapons and this time that includes do-all quarterback Baylor Diaz. Diaz was one of the top-ranked mobile quarterbacks in New Mexico last season. Braydon Mignard (2021), Brandon Blidi (2021), and Hagen Rains (2021) all return and create a seriously tough defense for the Rams.

3.) Ruidoso Warriors (last season: 1-4 overall)
The Ruidoso Warriors and head coach Kief Johnson are looking to an improved Fall 2021 season after going 1-4 last season. When I say improved it looks at the record but the Warriors played a difficult slate of games with all three district teams being tough last season along with adding Alamogordo to the list. The Warriors like the other teams in the district will have a new quarterback under center and the Warriors, who run the ball, have some options. Top running back Braxton Hall (2021) along with Griffin Hooker (2021) return after getting some touches during the Spring. Kago Sandoval (2022) and Mike Sandoval (2021) return on offense as well providing them with some nice options.

4.) St. Pius X Sartans (last season: 1-3 overall, 0-2 district)
The Sartans return some top talent in the district and we look forward to watching running back Marco Ybarra (2022/RB-LB). Others to keep an eye on this season that made an impact last season are Cian Jones (2022/QB), Dominic Esparza (2022/ATH), and Joaquin Medina (2022/LB). They have some skilled players returning but the concern could be the line and defense.

5.) Silver Colts (last season: 2-1 overall)
The Colts had some weapons last season and they really showed how good they were in the final game of the season. The Colts beat Kirtland Central in the bowl game, 40-7 in a game of what could have been a special season at Silver. Now they must replace a handful of those key pieces including Walker Wenzel a do-all quarterback that will play at WNMU. Returning, the Colts turn to some youth in Aidan Granado (2023) who rushed for 84-yards (4.4 ypc) and 95 receiving yards playing behind some really good talent. Owen Hooper (2022), and Mason Lockett (2022) along with Walter Woodward (2023) form a sound defense that could become the strength of this season's team.

6.) Bloomfield Bobcats (2-3 overall)
New head coach Mike Kovacs is a good hire, but the former Bloomfield coordinator may need a year or two to rebuild the program back into state championship contention. The Bobcats dropped to 2-3 overall last season and yes they played for the 4A 'Bowl Championship but it was a step back last season from their 12-1 state runner-up season in 2019. This year could likely be a bigger step back as they graduated much of their top guys and they have delivered their best Bobcat years recently they could be a bubble when it comes to the state playoffs. It's not all bad news for new head coach Kovacs however as he'll have tough-as-nails running back/linebacker Diego Snell-Martinez (2022) returning for his senior season. Snell-Martinez is one of two players to have contributed to the 12-1 season with playing experience, then a sophomore.

7.) Taos Tigers (3-1 overall)
The only team with a winning record coming from this district the Taos Tigers are looking to make another push at a late postseason push. The Tigers won the state championship four years ago and a return to the top is on their mind. The good news is welcoming back 6-foot-6 quarterback Daemon Ely (2023) who has seen action for two seasons, last Spring being called in as QB-1. The rest of the roster will be going through some overturn with the graduation to all four All-State players from the roster last season. Lenoard Archuleta (2023/TE) and Warren Gomez (2022/G).

8.) Moriarty Pintos (1-4 overall)
The Pintos only captured a single win out of the Spring season but played a quality slate of games with the likes of Taos, Portales, and St. Pius X. The Pintos an early favorite to contend for the District Championship have a healthy return of running backs. Cayden Dunn (2022) rushed for 255-yards last season and 4-touchdowns. Matthew Romero (2023), 179-yards and 2 touchdowns, along with Erick Wolf (2023), 136-yards and a touchdown also return in the backfield for the Pintos. Having those three returning is huge for a program that runs the ball 90% of the time. Jason Garcia (2022) also welcomes back an experienced defense led by the linebacker.

9.) Bernalillo Spartans (last season: 4-0 overall, 2-0 district)
The Spartans had a season to remember during the Spring. Head coach John Cobos won coach of the year in New Mexico and the team went a perfect 4-0. Well, Fall 2021 could be the start of a rebuild as they will have many holes to fill this coming season. Tristen Ludi-Herrera (ATH/2022) and Kevin Chavez (MLB/2022) will provide immediate help this coming season but they could be surrounded by inexperience and youth.

10.) Aztec Tigers (1-4 overall)
The Aztec Tigers and head coach Eric Stovall are trending up this season and with Bloomfield and Kirtland Central question marks, it could be an opportunity for the Tigers to climb back up. 2023 quarterback Marcquies Henry is likely to be back under center after only two games during the Spring. He passed for 309-yards and a touchdown before his senior was cut short. Talents Ryan Ray (2022) and Tristen McNeal (2023) also make a return and you could be looking at the favorite to win the district this season.

11.) Grants Pirates (last season: 3-1 overall, 1-1 district)
The Pirate ship has docked and many familiar faces have stepped off the ship including arguably their best head coach in the last twenty years in Rio Thompson who not only gave life to the program he also sent a handful to the next level. Enter Pirate alumnus Brandon Hernandez, great hire for what the Pirates need during a transition, who has been an assistant at West Mesa most recently. Also, the Pirates must replace the second-ranked QB in the state in Brandon Furbee who is now at Farmington HS. We should also add they graduated Terrell Hocker who was top-3 in the state for rushing yards. We can't go without giving a name to watch and that player is Tyler Everhart (2022) who has all of the tools to be playing at the next level.

12.) Albuquerque Academy Chargers (last season: 2-2 overall)
The Chargers enter the central district this season and have been on a steady incline under head coach Shaun Gehres. After going 2-2 last season they hope to continue their build of the Chargers program, one that once played for a state championship (2010). Looking forward to the Chargers return quarterback Andres Rivera (2023) who threw for 728-yards and 6-touchdowns during the short 4-game covid season in the Spring. Add in his top three targets in Kellen Gehres (2023), Mark McIntosh (2022), and Tyler Wilson (2022), and the Chargers could be a surprise squad.

13.) Pojoaque Valley Elks (2-2 overall)
After an 0-2 start during the Spring season the Elks reeled off two wins over Valencia (36-22) and Espanola Valley (50-0). The Elks program has been in the cellar for a few years but are entering the Fall 2021 season with some excitement. Quarterback Adam Pacheco (2023) returns under center after throwing for 647-yards and 8-touchdowns as a sophomore. Anthony Meloy-Chavez (2022) returns at WR along with D'sean Martinez (2022), Jacob Sullivan (2022), and JC Fordham. Meloy-Chavez also had 5 carries and accounted for 52-yards (10.4 average) at running back. The four returning receivers each had over 100-yards receiving with Meloy-Chavez (194) and Martinez (197) leading the way.

14.) Kirtland Central Broncos (3-2 overall)
Well, I searched, but somehow can't seem to have an update on the Kirtland Central Broncos' new head coach. Have they been hired? If not, it's late. Also, it could be a long overhaul for the Broncos as the roster was hit by back-to-back big graduating classes. Add in a new head coach with limited time with the team and this could be the start of a major rebuild. Elijah Jenks (2022) was at quarterback last season but not too sure if he stays at KC.

15.) Valencia Jaguars (last season: 0-3 overall)
The Jaguars hit a low last season and dropped all three games. It's hard to tell what went wrong last season but this is an area that could have been highly impacted by the pandemic (and everything that has to do with players not in school). Head coach Wesley Shank is one of the best and although this building project is taking a bit longer, the Jaguars should be back within a few years. They had some youth in 2019 that we liked and if they have developed some they could be a force. Matthew Chavez (2023), Rey Garcia (2023), and Nate Rodriguez (2022) are some that come to mind as they look to rebound this Fall.

16.) Espanola Valley Sundevils (0-3 overall)
The Sundevils searched for a new head coach prior to the season and struggled to an 0-3 season. The Sundevils also struggled on both ends of the ball only scoring 6 points and gave up 160 on the year in three games. Plenty of the struggles was a numbers game last season with limited players, a new system, and experience. The good news will be the return of several underclassmen that gained varsity experience during the Spring season. The bad news is that they could still be outsized and outnumbered.

17.) Gallup Bengals (0-5 overall)
Gallup is a tough job. They are on to another head coach after Nick Winkler decided to step down. New head coach Andrew Rodriguez steps in and looks to bring some stability to a program that has been a consistent cellar team. 6-foot-1 ATH Perry Ellerbe returns for the Bengals and is the lone hope. The good news for the Bengals is that if there was a year to upset or make a run in district play this would be that season.

18.) Shiprock Chieftains (3-2 overall)
The Chieftains won three games during the Spring and although that brings some much-needed confidence into the 2021 Fall season, it could be a battle at the end. However, like we've mentioned district 1 in 4A football has an open door for any team willing to run through it. In a league with one bid, you can expect a narrow ending to this one. Shiprock only had 19 players on their roster last season with five underclassmen. That type of turnover could be the result of a bottom looking up the season.

Team Rankings 6A Football: Preseason Team Rankings for 2021

6A Football: Way-too-early rankings

NMPreps will rank every team in each class and then each weekend during the season. The New Mexico high school football season schedule is to start in August but it's always time to start thinking rankings and predicting the season.

No. 1 Cleveland Storm (last season: 5-0 overall)
Heath Ridenour's team must replace a few key players from last season, but the Storm are once again the pick to win it all in 2021. The team suffered key losses on both sides of the ball, yet still figures to rank as the top team. Nic Trujillo (2023/WR-CB), Stratton Shufelt (2024/LB-TE), and Evan Wysong (2023/QB-CB) are the new leaders and makeup of what could be a tough two/three-year run. Making it through another season as the champs won't be easy, but Cleveland is NMPreps pick to hoist the New Mexico State Championship trophy again in November.

No. 2 Rio Rancho Rams (last season: 3-1 overall)
Gerry Pannoni's first full season at the helm in New Mexico begins with some hype and questions. The Rams return one of the top-ranked running backs in Zach Vigil (2022) and one of the top ten prospects in OL Cayden Romero (2022). The Rams will have to find a new quarterback and some depth at the receiver position. Chris Montoya (2023/LB), Fabiano Valdez (2022), and Lucas Lucero (2022/FS) anchor the defense charge entering the season.

No. 3 Cibola Cougars (last season: 2-0 overall)
Under the direction of head coach Roderick Williams, Cibola High School has been one of the more consistent programs. The Cougars went 2-0 with wins over Volcano Vista and Eldorado during the Spring and enter 2021 with their highest ranking all-time (NMPreps Team Rankings, 2006). The Cougars have plenty of reason with the number one ranked quarterback in the state in Aden Chavez (2023) who tossed for 522-yards and 7 touchdowns total for both games in the Spring. Look for him to go to targets Nathan Lopez (2022), Brayden Mummert (2023), and Branden Castillo (2023). On defense keep an eye on Peyton Harrison (LB) a rising junior that could be a breakout player along with junior Caden Lowery (LB).

No. 4 Volcano Vista Hawks (last season: 2-1 overall)
The Volcano Vista Hawks had an impressive Spring season and welcome back a very experienced senior-laden squad this Fall. Look for Chad Wallin and company to have things moving along nicely. Yes, they have some roles including quarterback but have plenty to like. Some must-see prospects on the radar are Kieran Cordova (RB/2022), Kaden Valdez (2022), and Acen Aguilar (2022). Cordova rushed for 206-yards and another 228 receiving yards. The Hawks open up the season against No. 8 Las Cruces in an early top-ten showdown.

No. 5 Clovis Wildcats (last season: 3-2 overall)
After a slow start to the Spring season, the Wildcats rebounded with a 3-2 overall record. The Wildcats return this season with plenty of new faces as they were hit by the graduation of some of the top players in the state a year ago. The Wildcats return Mile Acosta (2022) who threw for 667-yards last season after being moved into the QB-1 role. Manny Bustillos (2022), Jared Nigreville (2022), and Gage Angeles (2022) return for the Wildcats on defense. The Wildcats open the season against rival Hobbs followed by a pair of Texas games - El Paso-Ysleta (TX), and Wolfforth-Frenship (TX).

No. 6 La Cueva Bears (last season: 0-3 overall)
The only way is up from here for the La Cueva Bears and although it may shock many of you that the 0-3 squad from the Spring is ranked high and at No. 6 (NMPreps Weekly Team Rankings), we believe the Bears have the makings to do well this season. Also, yes they lose Ja'Shown Lowery who nows plays for Division I New Mexico but the Bears had a very inexperienced roster with some serious 2023/2024 talent that could turn heads and likely elevate them back into title contention. They also feature UNM recruit Hunter Haemker (2022) a top linebacker in the state. Keep a close eye on these prospects this coming season as they could catapult the Bears into a possible DC. Those players are Colt Mangino (2023), Aidan Armenta (2023), and Exodus Ayers (2023) among several others.

No. 7 Eldorado Eagles (last season: 1-2 overall)
The Eldorado Eagles may have some of the most hype for a squad that went 1-2 during the Spring football schedule. The Eagles have some youth and depth that could make them one of the surprise teams of the season, hence the number seven ranking in the top-10. They have a couple of returning quarterbacks that gained some experience during the spring and yes although they will be replacing key positions like QB, RB, and WR roles the Eagles have a chance to make a run at a DC this season many believe. Also, looking at their three-game schedule during the Spring they lost by a combined score of 72-76 to three teams that will be ranked higher in this preseason preview. Players to watch Elias Franco (2022), Zach Petty (2024), and Nathan Velez (2023).

No. 8 Las Cruces Bulldawgs (last season: 3-1 overall)
This could be the lowest preseason ranking we've ever had for the Bulldawgs as we enter the 2021 season. This coming after a season after they played for the 6A Elite Bowl game. Well, the roster has taken a hit the last two football seasons with graduation and their go-to talents including a three-year QB in Marcos Lopez. Although some argue that the Bulldawgs could be in for a surprising season with talents like Dallas Boyd (LB-WR/2022), Matthew Franco (G-LB/2022), and Dillon Hein (C-DE/2022). We wouldn't be surprised if they have another run at a state title but we are keeping the expectations low for now.

No. 9 Carlsbad Cavemen (last season: 2-2 overall)
Turning Carlsbad back into a consistent playoff-bound team hasn't been easy but the feeling is the Cavemen are on the brink. The Cavemen finished 2-2 last season and this could be the season many in blue and white have been waiting for since coach Bradley's hiring. Yes, we still have skeptics when we had them to be released at nine but I really like the make-up of the Cavemen roster. They return quarterbacks Dane Naylor (2023) and Jalen Macareno (2022) both played well at moments last season. Also, two names to know that are returning are Amorian Barnes (2022) and highly-ranked OL, Ramon Loya (2022). I am buying big on the Cavemen this preseason.

No. 10 Centennial Hawks (last season: 1-2 overall)
The Hawks have been a consistent top-10 team since joining 6A football and nearly since the start of their brief history. Head coach Aaron Ocampo continues to produce a top-level program. Well, this could be the year that they have to step back in the wins column but we've said that before and it turned into an undefeated season. The Hawks although coming in under the radar this season could have its spark in a quarterback with experience in Ian Lopez (2022) who tossed the ball well last season sharing time with now graduated, the versatile Kersten Ruckner. He has some options at receiver with newcomer names like Isaiah Abeyta (2023), and Nathan Lara (2023).

No. 11 Hobbs Eagles (last season: 2-3 overall)
After starting the season going 0-3 the Hobbs Eagles saved the season winning the final two games, one over Artesia, and then topping it off with a Bowl win over Onate (now Organ Mountain) High School. The bright spot and name we all know heading into the 2021 season, Colton Graham (2021) the top-ranked quarterback this season. Graham threw for 649-yards and rushed for another 216-yards last season, playing a quality schedule. More good news for Eagle faithful is that this will technically only be year two under head coach Ken Stevens and although the start is 4-11 at the helm the best days are ahead. Another name to know is Corbin Thompson (2021) at running back along with Kaden Trevino (2022) at receiver. A little mentioned but, a sneaky good, name you should know is Josh Miller (2021) a linebacker that will move this team forward.

No. 12 West Mesa Mustangs (3-0 overall)
What a season. The Mustangs went a perfect 3-0 and the Spring 2021 season was an attention-grabbing season. Coach Ansotigue welcomes back a top-ranked quarterback in Daniel Ayala (2022) in hopes of keeping this development of the Mustangs program moving forward. The Mustangs lose a couple of true key pieces and filling those gaps could be the difference-maker in getting to five wins or making the playoffs. The tough part? They have a very tough schedule to start with Centennial, then Los Lunas and then they go with Sandia - a team that they upset last season.

No. 13 Sandia Matadors (1-1 overall)
The Matadors didn't get to finish their complete season this Spring but a 1-1 record has them looking forward to a full season. Perhaps the biggest anticipation will be seeing one of the top running backs for the 2023 class returning in Malachi Thymes. Thymes played well as a sophomore in a short season and a full season could highlight the skill set of this back. Jacob Miranda (QB) had a few snaps at quarterback as a backup last season and could add some stability. The Matadors have a chance to climb early this season and could be in the hunt for a playoff bid.

No. 14 Santa Fe Demons (1-1 overall)
The Demons continue to trend in the right direction under head coach Andrew Martinez. The program went 4-6 overall in 2019 and 1-1 last season and the best year could be in 2021. Head coach Martinez returns top prospects Luc Jaramilillo (2021/QB), Martell Mora (2021/RB), and Ben White (2021/DT) this season. This trio is just the start of a talented bunch returning for the Demons this coming season. Martinez took on a monster task trying to build this program up after sitting on a record-like losing streak. Now, that's in the past, and the Demons are looking to fight for a playoff spot this season and it wouldn't surprise us if it happens.

No. 15 Albuquerque Bulldogs (2-1 overall)
The Bulldogs finished 2-1 and although it was a short season the above .500 mark will provide some excitement to the football program. More excitement is in the form of running back Andres Aguirre (2023) which provided a needed offensive punch for the Dogs. Also, returning is a next-level prospect in Landon Williams a 6-foot-4 threat on defense. Yes, they have holes to fill from departed seniors off the 2020 season but the Bulldogs could be in a position to start challenging for that 12th slot. Head coach Timothy Johnson continues to do an excellent job at a school that hasn't really been known as being a football school. However, he has gone an impressive 20-23 over the five-year span at the helm.

No. 16 Atrisco Heritage Jaguars (1-1 overall)
The Jaguars are hoping for a breakthrough in coach Howard Knezevich's second year at the helm. The Jaguars shocked us this Spring starting out the season with a 53-8 win over Manzano High School. Myles Lane (2023) returns under center for the Jaguars after throwing for 129 yards and 3 touchdowns in his sophomore season (2 games); Lane also rushed for another 62 yards. The Jaguars will need to replace two obvious players in Christopher Rios (LB) and Jaden Crowley (RB), both of which played a huge role in the rebuild project. Seniors Joseph Marquez (RB) and Sebastian Gonzalez (RB) will look to fill the void at running back both totaled for 93-yards on 17 carries last season, split between the two of them. The early prediction for the Jaguars, without looking at the schedule, is a 3-5 win range.

No. 17 Organ Mountain Knights (0-4 overall)
The rebuilding effort at Organ Mountain High School is set to continue into the 2021 season. The Knights finished 0-4 in Steve Castille's second season (well 1.5 seasons) and have a 1-13 overall record. Closing the gap and showing improvement overall rests on both sides of the ball moving forward to this fall. Moving 'up' to 17 in our preseason rankings the Knights are expected to show an improvement and we are eager to see the progression moving forward in 2021. The excitement and expectations will lay on the shoulders of returners who have some hype on them including top-50 players Austin Mace (2022/LB) and Seth Johnson (2023/LB). Also, look for prospects Aiden Rosser (2023/LB), Matthew Saenz (2022/QB), and Beto Garcia (2023/WR) to name a few. The early prediction is 4 wins and a shot at the playoffs; they could be ranked 12-10 by the end of the season.

No. 18 Manzano Monarchs (0-3 overall)
Phillip Martinez was the good hire back in 2018, but the former Monarch assistant coach may need a year or two to rebuild the program back into contention. What I like here is that the Monarchs are giving him time to get his feet wet and build the program in his way and I've said time and time again it takes time for an assistant to take over into the lead role. Now the honesty is the Monarchs looked rough last season going 0-3 and that comes with having a new QB, RB, WR, and roster overturn after years of talent through the door. The good news heading into the fall is they will have quarterback Jared Melfi (2022) back after a sound showing this Spring. Minus losing Jaxon Powell (UNM) the OL should be back as well and could be an x-factor. The early prediction is 2-8/3-7.

No. 19 Gadsden Panthers (0-3 overall) **Will play an independent schedule in 2021
Skinny: The future is bright for the Panthers, it may just take a little more time. Head coach Dino Facio Jr. is doing a fine job building the right culture and atmosphere at Gadsden and the next thing will be earning some wins on the scoreboard. They are about to turn the corner and they have some pieces to be excited about returning including 2023 running back Tomas Herrera who rushed for 353-yards and 5-touchdowns (117.7 yards per game) in three games last season. The early prediction is 2-wins and maybe more pending the final view of their schedule.

Team Rankings 5A Football: Preseason Team Rankings for 2021

5A Football: Way-too-early rankings

NMPreps will rank every team in each class and then each weekend during the season. The New Mexico high school football season schedule is to start in August but it's always time to start thinking rankings and predicting the season.

No. 1 Farmington Scorpions (last season: 5-0 overall)
The Farmington Scorpions return after a successful 5-0 Spring season in which they won the 5A Elite Bowl game held at the University of New Mexico. The Scorpions will have some reloading to do in order to keep things rolling but have found their replacement at quarterback in Grants transfer Brandon Furbee (2022). Jakeem Reed (2023), Patrick Shay (2022), and Caleb Carrillo (2022) are three key contributors from last season that will play big roles this season.

No. 2 Goddard Rockets (last season: 2-2 overall)
The Goddard Rockets enter the 2021 season as an early favorite to contend for the state championship. One of the main reasons for this is the fact that they feature top-ranked running back Javyn Morales (2023) an early preseason candidate for New Mexico Mr. Football. The Rockets, unfortunately, had to shut down their program for two weeks and will miss their opening games.

No. 3 Los Lunas Tigers (last season: 3-0 overall)
The Tigers will once again usher in a new head coach, this time Eldorado assistant and former Belen head coach Rex Hennington takes over. The Tigers are coming off a 3-0 Spring season with wins over La Cueva, Capital, and Belen. This Tigers team has some serious talent return that includes must-see quarterback Paul Cieremans (2023). Mikkel Beltran (2022/DE), Darryn Romero (2022/DB), Christian Gonzalez (2022/DB), and Devin Gallegos (2022/RB) are three other top-ranked positional players for the Tigers.

No. 4 Artesia Bulldogs (last season: 2-3 overall)
Enter the Jeremy Maupin era at Artesia High School. Maupin left Los Lunas to return home as the Bulldogs headman and inherits a team that went 2-3 during the spring. The Bulldogs will have some replacing to do at the receiver position but look for 2023 prospect Devyn Fierro to build off a 135-yard Spring season. One of the top-ranked running backs in Jake Barrera (2022) also returns after going for nearly 500-yards this Spring. The Bulldogs open up with Carlsbad followed by Hobbs.

No. 5 Roswell Coyotes (last season: 2-2 overall)
The Roswell Coyotes return after going 2-2 overall last season. The 2018 and 2019 state champion program will be going through a mini-reload with a younger roster. Seniors Joseph Renteria and Juan Carlos Alvarez look to anchor the team as two top-ranked offensive linemen in the state. The Coyotes open the season with Farmington in Roswell giving us an early indication of what both teams have this season.

No. 6 Mayfield Trojans (last season: 2-2 overall)
The Mayfield Trojans went 2-1 during the regular portion of their schedule and earned a bid in the 5A elite bowl where they fell to Farmington (48-28). The Trojans will enter their first full season in 5A football, down from 6A. They return a very experienced and talented group led by running back duo Calvin Cook (2022) and Jose Montoya (2022). Also, add in second-year QB Cesar Daniel Granados (2022) who tossed for over 300-yards.

No. 7 Deming Wildcats (3-1 overall)
If a surprise contender emerges from the group, Deming could be the pick. The Wildcats rushed to a nice 3-1 season during the spring despite not being considered a top-10 type team. Well, now they are considered and could be on the rise with a stud running back like Joey Reza (2022) out of the backfield. The senior is a top ten ranked back to watch this season and could have the Wildcats looking at a potential semifinal run. They open the season with Gadsden, followed by Organ Mountain before a contender/pretender showdown with Goddard on September 3rd.

No. 8 Piedra Vista Panthers (3-2 overall)
The Panthers had a successful Spring season going 3-2. The Panthers a young team during the Spring could be a sleeper. Look for junior quarterback Logan Howell to emerge this coming Fall for the Panthers. Another stud to watch that could have a very impactful season is 6-foot-2 running back Jacob Ramsted (2023). The Panthers have the making to be a very tough squad when things officially kick-off this Fall. They will do battle with crosstown rival Farmington but don't be shocked if the Panthers come out hot. After their opener with Los Lunas they have a chance of pulling off a 7-win season.

No. 9 Alamogordo Tigers (3-2 overall, 2021 Spring)
The Tigers jumped out to a solid 3-0 start last season and looked as projected. Head coach AJ Cisco has done a great job building the football program back up and doing it well. The Tigers will start about where they finished during the spring and that is saying a lot as they will have to do it without stud RB Sean Hays who has since graduated. Quarterback Anthony Mello (2022) returns after a nice showing during the spring season going for 590 passing yards. Amarius Wedlow (2023) will look to get the call out of the backfield after rushing for 127-yards as a sophomore. Damon Mayberry (2023) and Ryan Stovall (2023) will take the reigns on defense as the two will lead a new group after graduating some key pieces on defense. Tigers could be a sneaky squad and they have some 2023 talent. I would lean on a playoff spot and don't get caught sleeping.

No. 10 Del Norte Knights (3-0 overall, 2021 Spring)
Second-year head coach Bruce Langston has Del Norte trending in the right direction as we head into the 2021 season. The Knights finished the 2021 Spring season playing some of their best football, winning by a combined score of 139 to 40, going 3-0 with two wins over district opponents. The outlook for the Knights offense will be ATH Cruz Garcia (2022). The bad news for the Knights is having to replace the nice duo of Adrian Marquez (QB) and Isaiah Ortiz (RB). The battle for district placement will be a battle as Del Norte, Valley, and Belen all with similar roster issues, some coaching changes, will all fight for what could be the other playoff at-large bid. Also, Highland will do its best to join this group of three.

No. 11 Valley Vikings (2-1 overall, 2021 Spring)
The Vikings got things back on track during the Spring winning 2 of 3 games and looking like they could be a threat. Head coach Judge Chavez returns his quarterback Caden Jojola (2023), running back Ricky Henderson (2023), and a pair of ATH in Ezekiel Ramos (2024) and Charles Lopez-Burton (2024). The bad news for the Vikings is the O-line did graduate three but welcomes back 2023 Tobias Troncoso and 2024 Nate Barela. The defense struggled in the lone loss against the run, they return plenty and I'm assured they will be ready this season.

No. 12 Belen Eagles (2-1 overall, 2021 Spring)
The Belen Eagles enter the 2021 season after an interesting summer that seen former head coach Ty House resign, hired Phillip Lopez which then resigned a month into the job which led to the exciting hire of Andrew McCraw. McCraw comes to Belen after 5-years as an assistant head coach at Eastern New Mexico University. The building process could be a long one for the Eagles as they look to also replace their QB, RB, and much of their experience. Emmanual Aragon (2022), Elijah Romero (2023), Aiden Padilla (2022), and Sam Tibbs (2022) each provide some immediate help at the skill positions.

No. 13 Santa Teresa Desert Warriors (2-1 overall, 2021 Spring)
The Desert Warriors have found some recent success in football winning 9 of their last 13 games, looking back to the 2019 season. That also includes a 1-point playoff loss. What hurts? They lose much of their production from the spring and need a replacement for two-year primetime player Matthew Lopez. The good news. Isidro Talavera (2022) returns for his senior season; Talavera had a good showing as a sophomore.

No. 14 Highland Hornets (0-3 overall, 2021 Spring)
Minor step back last season but what wasn't a step back the last year. The Hornets fell to 0-3 during the spring season but have high hopes for a return to the playoffs in 2021. On defense, the name to know here is Abraham Lopez a 5-foot-11 linebacker that has been all-district in consecutive seasons. The offense for the Hornets should be much improved and experienced this coming season with the return of QB Eliab Lopez (2023) and stud running back Xhane Williams (2024). This duo could be dangerous for a couple of seasons. Luke Jaramillo (2022/RB) is another returning player in the backfield for the Hornets.

No. 15 Capital Jaguars (2-2 overall, 2021 Spring)
Welcome the Joaquin "Wax" Garica era at Capital High School. The Jaguars are back to a respectable level after departed head coach Bill Moon gave life back to a program that was in critical condition. Now, looking forward the Jaguars could be in for a major rebuild and could take time to get back to the .500 days and battling for District Championships. Stud running back Luke Padilla has graduated and now the team moves into a new look. Anthony Anaya (2023/ATH) is one to help carry the program forward but not much behind him as it appears from here.

No. 16 Miyamura Patriots (1-4 overall, 2021 Spring)
There's no way the Patriots stay at the bottom of the class and last season they went winless against 5A teams with the solo win against crosstown rival Gallup (4A). There is good news for the Patriots however and that comes with a returning quarterback in Blas Saucedo (2023), running back Chris Chavez (2023), and an experienced defense that includes LB Jeremiah Paredes (2022). The Patriots were young in head coach Sean Reeves 'first' season (Spring 2021) but they now have experience and could be one of the most improved teams in 2021. Don't be shocked if they pull off 5 or 6 wins.

No. 17 Los Alamos Hilltoppers (0-3 overall, 2021 Spring)
The Hilltoppers were one of two teams that didn't earn a win this Spring in 5A football. The Hilltoppers struggled on both sides of the ball only reaching the end zone once while giving up 137 points in three games. Head coach Garrett Wiliams understands how difficult this job is and could hope to return to a .500 level team, which they reached in 2018. Some good news moving forward is the return of Jakob Green (RB-LB/2022), Caden Thorton (RB-FS/2022), and appears to be Luke Gonzales (2023) under center for the Hilltoppers this coming season. Early prediction is 1 or 2 wins on the season but could be under the radar getting to 4 or 5.

No. 18 Chaparral Lobos (0-9 overall, 2019 season)
After missing the 2021 spring season, the program remains in the cellar of New Mexico high school football. Riego Rodriguez (2022) and Peter Castro (2022) return for their senior season after being the go-to backs during the 2019 season. After back-to-back seasons losing nine games, 2018 they went 1-9 overall, the Lobos are hoping to relive the 2017 season when they reached a high of 6-wins. That season they played well on both ends of the ball, especially on defense where they have appeared to struggle as of late. The team will likely struggle again with some youth and inexperience but could return to 4/5 wins by 2022. For the 2021 season, I will say 1 or 2 wins is the most likely situation.
