ROSWELL COYOTES
Head Coach: Jeff Lynn
2019 Record: 13-0 overall, 3-0 district
2019 Playoffs: 5A State Champs
Key Returning Players: Armano Silva (LB/2021); Joel Renteria (RB/2021); Jaeden Contreras (CB/2021)

Review/Preview: 18-wins in a row for the Roswell Coyotes and coming off a perfect 13-0 season in 2019. The Coyotes are the 5A back to back state champs and could be in the same situation come the end of 2020. As usual, there are plenty of changes at Roswell, but the Coyotes won't miss a beat in 2020. The defense will be back and could be stronger this season with second year starter Armando Silva at MLB, Jaeden Contreras at CB and throw in Talon Sanders (2021/FS). The classification will be tough again and add in the likes of Mayfield (new to 5A from 6A), along with Los Lunas and the ever tough district with Goddard and Artesia.

PIEDRA VISTA PANTHERS
Head Coach: Jared Howell
2019 Record: 8-4 overall, 2-1 district
2019 Playoffs: First Round (Lost to Goddard, 20-10)
Key Returning Players: Michael Candelaria (2021/RB); Carson Randall (2021/C); Noah Keune (WR/2021)

Review/Preview: The Panthers have to replace a handful of key players from last year's 8-4 squad. The good news: The Panthers return Michael Candelaria (2021) at running back who has several big games and will now take over more carries after the depart of graduating senior Jarrod Mitchell. The 2020 senior group was huge for the Panthers last season and will leave many holes to fill. Carson Randall and Tyler Stock (2021/G) will look to carry to torch for departed OL Benjamin Rasmussen. The biggest question mark comes in the form of quarterback and who will get the nod this coming season. Could this be a rebuild and step back for the Panthers?

MIYAMURA PATRIOTS
Head Coach: Sean Reeves
2019 Record: 2-8 overall, 0-3 district
2019 Playoffs: Missed Playoffs
Key Returning Pieces: Cael Stewart (2022/QB); Jack Dowling (2021/WR)

Review/Preview: After an abysmal 2-8 season, Miyamura is hitting the reset button under new head coach Sean Reeves. Last season brought more off the field drama than the Patriots would have liked with the ultimate firing of former head coach John Roanhaus. The good news: Patriots will return Cael Stewart at quarterback after tossing for over 1,000-yards as a sophomore.

Early Prediction: 2-4 wins
Early Playoff Prediction: Bubble to Bubble out

MAYFIELD TROJANS
Head Coach: Michael Bradley
2019 Record: 7-4 overall, 4-2 district
2019 Playoffs: Quarterfinals (Lost to Volcano Vista, 35-28); First Round (Beat Carlsbad 21-14)
Key Returning Pieces: Derrick Martinez (RB/2021)

Review: The Trojans, a senior loaded squad, went on to win 7-games last season and reached the quarterfinals only to fall to the 1-seed Volcano Vista Hawks. The presence of do-all running back Matthew Riley played huge for the Trojans.

Preview: They have holes upon holes to fill for the Trojans this coming season on both sides of the football. The good news? They drop in classification into the correct enrollment size and that could help in a quick replacement (or "rebuild") of depth.

Early Prediction: 6-8 wins
Early Playoff Prediction: Quarters to Semifinals

LOS LUNAS TIGERS
Head Coach: Jeremy Maupin
2019 Record: 10-3 overall, 3-0 district
2019 Playoffs: State Championship (Lost to Roswell, 25-19); Semifinals (Beat Goddard 35-14); Quarterfinals (Beat Artesia 58-21)
Key Returning Pieces: Tyler Kiehne (DE/2021); Derek Chavez (RB/2021); Lorenzo Sosa (WR/2021); Zachary Doyle (DE/2021)

Review: The perfect bridesmaid. The Los Lunas Tigers have finished as runner up three times in the last eight state championship games. The Tigers are coming off back-to-back state championship losses at the hands of the Roswell Coyotes. Replacing quarterback Kade Benavidez and University of New Mexico commit Bryce Santana won't be easy. Benavidez tossed for over 2,100 yards last season but it's safe to say Jeremy Maupin knows a thing or two about filling holes.

Preview: The Tigers return star and heavily recruited prospect Tyler Kiehne at DE, along with the team's top rushing leader Derek Chavez. There's enough returning to prevent a major drop in performance for the Tigers. Coach Maupin's team is primed for another run at a state championship appearance and the defense will be one to carry the load early on.

Early Prediction: 8-10 wins
Early Playoff Prediction: Could go far. Semifinal to SC is the ceiling.
Early Spring Ranking: 1-4

GODDARD ROCKETS
Head Coach: Chris White
2019 Record: 9-3 overall, 2-1 district
2019 Playoffs: Semifinals (Lost to Los Lunas 35-14); Quarterfinals (Beat Piedra Vista 20-10)
Key Returning Players: Larry Luna (2021/OL); Sammy Zaragoza (2021/RB); Nate Stone (2021WR-FS)

Review: The Goddard Rockets are getting back to their standard deep playoff appearances. After a few years of having to rebuild or get back to the tradition that has won many games. They take a hit losing the likes of Robert Aragon (QB) and a handful of all-state players in Hunter Beene (LB), Connor Villalpando (LB), Kaston Ramage (LB) and Anthony Panto (OL). They reached the semifinals last season and went on to win 9-games.

Preview: The big question that sticks out with be replacing those three all-state LB group. The good news; the Rockets return Sammy Zaragoza (RB) and division I prospect Larry Luna (OL). The Rockets will need to replace some holes left behind from graduation but things appear to be settling back into place for the Rockets program.

Early Prediction: 6-8 wins
Early Playoff Prediction: Make and more
Early Spring Ranking: Top-5*
