College Summer League

Gauging interest on a commuter college league in the area. Looking to get guys 8-10 double headers and possibly a couple tournaments. Coach Soucy at EPCC has 2 team, possibly 3 from kids in El Paso. I'm guessing 2-3 teams from the Albuquerque area. If you know of any kids that are interested have them email me. We are allowing 2020 signed seniors to play in this also.

A couple of El Paso HS coaches have expressed interest in managing a team. If any of you are interested let me know. Pay wouldn't be much. We will take care of travel expenses and a per game fee to coach. TC at Luna and Coach Cook at NMMI has gotten information out to all of their kids.

A lot of college leagues around the country are planning on playing. I talked to a GM in California and he said the league is ready to start as soon as they open the fields but a big issue is finding host families because people aren't as willing to open their doors now. Guys like Grant Smith and Chase Silseth are supposed to go to NY to play but I personally don't see that happening.

LOS ALAMOS HILLTOPPERS
Head Coach: Garett Williams
2019 Record: 3-7 overall, 0-3 district
2019 Playoffs: Missed Playoffs
Key Returning Pieces: Tyler Weiss (QB/2021); Alex Chavez (LB/2021); James Rodriguez (ATH/2021)

Review: After a 3-2 start to the season the Hilltoppers dropped the final five games and missed the playoffs. They had some success in their non-district slate of games and had 2021 quarterback Tyler Weiss have a game against Pojoaque that had him pass for 261-yards and rush for another 75.

Preview: The Hilltoppers new district will be Capital, Farmington, Miyamura, and Piedra Vista. The Hilltoppers could struggle again when they hit the back end of the season, their one shot at a district win is Miyamura. Can they compete with the best, this district suddenly has three teams that will take the final seats when the brackets come out.

Early Prediction: 2/3 wins
Early Playoff Prediction: Nope
Early Spring Ranking: 15-18

HIGHLAND HORNETS
Head Coach: Phillip Lovato
2019 Record: 6-5 overall, 1-2 district
2019 Playoffs: First Round (Lost to Piedra Vista 55-15)
Key Returning Players: Nathan Lopez (RB/2022)

Review: Highland High School as a whole had a fantastic year in sports, especially if you looked at the programs four years ago. The Highland football program is no exception as the Hornets were a known cellar dweller. The Hornets finished above .500 and reached the playoffs last season. Those two things are HUGE for the program.

Preview: The Hornets have struggled with numbers early on but they do return a spark in running back Nathan Lopez (2022) who played extremely well as a sophomore last season. Their new district features Belen, Del Norte, Los Lunas and Valley (corrected).

Early Prediction: 4-6 wins
Early Playoff Prediction: Border Line
Early Spring Ranking: Ten Plus

FARMINGTON SCORPIONS
Head Coach: Jeff Dalton
2019 Record: 9-2 overall, 3-0 district
2019 Playoffs: Quarterfinals (Lost to Deming 16-14)
Key Returners: Caleb Carrillo (2021/QB); Chance Carrillo (2022/WR); Macen Alley (2021/WR)

Review: The Scorpions were one of the biggest breakout teams with key breakout players in 2019. Not only did the Scorpions jump out to 9-wins on the regular season but they had quarterback Caleb Carrillo (2021) toss for nearly 3,000-yards and 36-touchdowns.

Preview: The big news for the Scorpions will be the returning duo of the Carrillo's. The younger of the two, Chance was on the receiving end of a team leading categories in touchdowns (10) and receiving yards (810). They enter a new district and will battle with the likes of Capital, Los Alamos, Miyamura, and Piedra Vista.

Early Prediction: 6-8 wins.
Early Playoff Prediction: Make
Early Spring Ranking: Top-6*
