Week 7: Friday Night Preview & Predictions

Week 7: Friday Night Preview & Predictions
Grine | NMPreps

NMPreps weekly preview and predictions of each game taking place in New Mexico High School football.

TOP-10 PREVIEW

No. 1 Volcano Vista (5-0) vs West Mesa (1-4): The Volcano Vista Hawks should move along with ease as they open district (1-6A) play against unranked West Mesa. The Hawks defense led by Darren Avila (2020) and Jacob Gellhausen (2020) have been a huge strength to the undefeated run with only allowing 44 points this season. Prediction: Volcano Vista 56, West Mesa 6

No. 2 Cleveland (4-1) vs Atrisco Heritage (0-4): Another district 1-6A opener with the second ranked Cleveland Storm welcoming the unranked Atrisco Heritage Jaguars. The Storm can put up points and this will be one where several members reach the end zone. Prediction: Cleveland 50, Atrisco Heritage 0.

No. 3 Centennial (6-0) vs No. 7 Las Cruces (4-2): The game of the night takes place in Las Cruces with the third ranked Hawks, sitting with a perfect 6-0 record, taking on seventh ranked Las Cruces High School. Both have shown signs of being able to put points on the board in a hurry and we could have a shootout on our hands. Eyes will be on top quarterbacks Aidan Trujillo (Centennial/2020) and Marcos Lopez (Las Cruces/2021). Prediction: Centennial 45, Las Cruces 42

No. 4 Rio Rancho (3-2) vs No. 20 Cibola (3-2): Both teams are coming off a bye week and open district play tonight in Rio Rancho. The Rams are getting a stellar season from Isaiah Chavez (2020/QB) and this could be a game that he continues to build his Mr. Football campaign. Cibola features QB Aden Chavez (2023) who could be in talks for Freshman of the Year. Prediction: RioRancho 42, Cibola 20.

No. 5 La Cueva (4-2) vs No. 19 Manzano (2-3): The Albuquerque metro area contest between the previous state champs - La Cueva last season and Manzano in 2017. La Cueva is without star wide receiver Connor O'Toole but have Brad Thomas (2021) and Tristan Altier (2020) to carry the load; the two have over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns combined. Prediction: La Cueva 28, Manzano 14

No. 8 Clovis (3-3) vs Sandia (2-4): The Clovis Wildcats are sitting at .500 entering district play tonight against unranked Sandia. A game that could improve his campaign for Chance Harris which has passed for 1,500 yards and 17 touchdowns at this point in the season. Prediction: Clovis 33, Sandia 13

GAMES OUTSIDE THE TOP-10

  • No. 21 Lovington (4-2) continues to play a difficult non-district slate before starting district play as they host Goddard (4-1). No. 11 Goddard is coming off their first loss of the season.
  • No. 16 Portales (4-1) travels north, back to Santa Fe, to take on Capital (3-2) in what could either be close, coming out for Capital or Portales flexes.

UNRANKED WATCH THIS
  • Grants (4-1) at Taos (2-3) has playoff implications all over it with a chance to host a first round game.
  • Albuquerque Academy (3-3) has improved this season and look to continue to build off their 3-win season against Hot Springs (3-3).
  • Gallup (2-2) has been improved but a trip to Silver (2-3) could allow us more into how 'good' the Colts are in this contest.

THURSDAY NIGHT

Escalante (4-2) at Socorro (4-1):
The game of the night puts in a 3A vs 2A contest. Socorro is ranked second in 3A football and a heavy favorite but can head coach Dusty Giles make things interesting? All eyes on quarterback Billy Giles (2021) who has passed for 425 yards and rushed for another 359 yards for a total of 11 touchdowns. He'll be going up against Payson Hicks the 6-2 senior quarterback that has been ranked among the best QB's in New Mexico. Prediction: Socorro 42, Escalante 20. Grine Pick: Socorro

Locks: Portales, Tularosa, La Cueva. I think all three of these favorites roll this weekend. They each have a quality opponent but it would be a major upset if any falls.

Best Game: Centennial and Las Cruces is the must-see game in Las Cruces this season. Centennial looks to win another DC and claim as the king of LC.

I wanted to go upset: Last week I said one of two would happen and Aztec took the upset as an 80% underdog. So, this week I keep the "I wanted to go upset" section of this feature and the team I wanted to go but didn't is Lovington. Also, I would keep an eye on NMMI-Hope.

Pick 'EM Stats - 10/3 (6:13am)

RB recruiting

Not sure how many of you are watching HBO's Hard Knocks this year, but was interesting that last night when Jon Gruden was watching tape on running backs it was all about their blocking ability.

College coaches are looking for the same thing so if you are a running back looking to get recruited make sure to include LOTS of blocking and catches out of the backfield.

Top-10 Games to Watch in Week 7

  1. Las Cruces (4-2) at Centennial (6-0)
  2. La Cueva (4-2) at Manzano (2-3)
  3. Goddard (4-1) at Lovington (4-2)
  4. Portales (4-1) at Capital (3-2)
  5. Cibola (3-2) at Rio Rancho (3-2)
  6. Hope Christian (4-2) at NMMI (5-1)
  7. Escalante (3-3) at Socorro (4-1)
  8. Sandia (2-4) at Clovis (3-3)
  9. Tularosa (4-1) at Hatch Valley (1-4)
  10. Grants (4-1) at Taos (2-3)
Best-Game: Las Cruces, ranked 6th, (4-2, 2-0) taking on the third ranked Centennial (6-0, 2-0) for the district championship - yes, I know very early but projection wise this could be for the DC. Two of the top quarterbacks, that can move the chains with their arm and legs.

Sneaky Good: Tularosa is the top ranked team in 3A football and Hatch Valley took the week off and could be ready for an upset win. Should be a physical contest.

Upset Alert: Manzano (No. 19) has the chance to get La Cueva (No. 5). Do I believe that? No. But now would be the chance.

Playoffs, Playoffs, Playoffs: Grants at Taos as both are hanging onto a top-10 seed, Grants could still earn a top-8.

Week 5: Questions Facing Teams this Week

Week Five: Questions Facing Top-25 Ranked Teams This Week
Grine | NMPreps.com

Is No. 5 Rio Rancho back and can their defense hold No. 3 La Cueva?
Scoop: The Rams' defense has played well in back-to-back weeks against a pair of top-10 teams in Clovis and at Las Cruces. With the La Cueva Bears, they are putting up 34 points per game and played without Connor O'Toole last week. Rio Rancho is hot right now and has had some salty defensive backs in the past - if they can pressure Smith (LC QB) and lockdown the receiving options - they have a real shot at the upset here.

Playoffs?...playoffs?...playoffs? The No. 9 Mayfield Trojans and No. 11 Carlsbad Cavemen will play for a playoff spot on Saturday, right?
Scoop: Mayfield is 2-1 and Carlsbad is 3-1 on the season and yes you are reading this right, we are talking playoffs positions here. Also, can you believe that we have a district game this week? Both teams are sitting around 10-12 seed range and this one could likely be the determining factor for a seed. The question could also be: will this be the year Carlsbad finally reaches the playoffs?

Will Centennial QB Aiden Trujillo win the New Mexico Mr. Football Award?
Scoop: The New Mexico Mr. Football award is the top individual honor in New Mexico high school football. Trujillo, has had a monster monster season to this point with 831-passing yards and 9-touchdowns along with rushing for another 332-yards and 7 touchdowns. The Centennial Hawks (No. 4 NMPreps Top-25) face the winless and unranked Onate Knights this week. Trujillo will likely get pulled early but I could see him getting to 1,000-yards passing and 500-yards rushing on the season after this week and candidacy is high.

Is No. 21 Bloomfield the real deal?
Scoop: The Bloomfield Bobcats are 4-0 on the season and still riding off their State Championship showing from last season. They now face their first true test of the season as they take on a red hot Hope Christian (3-1) team that has won the last three games.

NFL

Montez Burfict suspended for rest of season after head to head hit against Colts.
I’ve been critical of the rules changes about contact with the helmet in the past but I’ll be the first to admit that it’s guys like this that have force d therule changes and taken away from the game a little bit I think.

Personally I don’t sgreee with the season long suspension, I think it should have been a lifetime ban. In this case it was so obvious ( I don’t care what he or any of the other players say) that his one true intention and the only thing on his mind was to try and hurt the guy instead of just playing football. The guy has done this many times before and should not be given another chance.

Get rid of guys like this permanently and quit throwing flags on borderline calls where head to head is unavoidable. Doesn’t seem so complicated but it’s big business and so many people have different ideas about how it should be calledmakes it complicated.

Another thing that makes it tough to do things right is the players union. They want be involved on decisions with rule changes but then every time somebody gets in trouble they think their obligated to protect that guy.
