Week 6: Most Likely to Upset this Week
Grine

NMPreps.com's weekly take on teams that could possibly upset a ranked team. The rankings used are those from the NMPreps New Mexico Top-25

No. 21 Lovington (4-1) at No. 13 Artesia (3-2): This week the options are very low but sticking true to the feature of "most likely", the Lovington Wildcats have been playing well lately. The Wildcats have played a well put together schedule this season with a mixture of top teams to confidence builder games. Can they shootout with Artesia, like the did with Roswell (76-54), their only loss of the season. Not only will they have to outscore the Bulldogs but making some stops appears to be the caveat.
Line: Artesia -13.5
Over/Under: 76

Aztec (4-1) at No. 22 St. Pius X (1-3): The Saturday afternoon game (1pm) will take place in Albuquerque with the Aztec Tigers looking to make some movement in 4A football. The Sartans are coming off a 40-7 blowout loss to Portales and 0-3 against ranked teams. Aztec is coming off a 16-14 win over Bayfield, Colorado but are 0-1 against ranked teams; they fell in week four to Farmington, 56-33.
Line: St. Pius X -8.5
Over/Under: 58

Valley (0-4) at No. 24 Highland (4-1): Highland is ranked in the top-25 for the first time since the 2011 season (went 5-5 with a playoff appearance that season) and looking to get the program back on track. The Valley Vikings are struggling and the loss to Miyamura last week didn't help, although they did put 23 points on the board which was well abover their 2.3 points per game average.
Line: Highland -10
Over/Under: 38

Most Likely to Upset in Week 5

No. 11 Carlsbad (3-1) at No. 9 Mayfield (2-1): A playoff home game is on the line here in this one as District 3-6A kicks off on Friday night. The Mayfield offense hasn't been what it used to be in 2015 under OC Greg Henington who took over at Belen for the 2016 season. Mayfield scored a total of 539 points that season (2015), from 2016 to 2018 they have totaled 810 in three years (210 in '18, 228, '17 and 376 in 2016). Carlsbad, also a team that won't blow teams out on the offensive side of the ball but doesn't have some athletes and is coming off a 33 point performance win. This one could be in the teens and the team that has the ball on the final drive could win this one.
Would I take it: Yes.
Last Meeting: Mayfield won 12-7 last season.

No. 5 Rio Rancho (2-2) vs No. 3 La Cueva (3-1): Rio Rancho could be the biggest of the dark horse teams and has a chance to open eyes this weekend. This could be an offensive shootout and Chavez (QB/Rio Rancho) is coming into form. They are a team that could peak late. We can't count out the defending champs either and what Brandon Back has built at La Cueva. I like the even match-up and what could be a coaching match to see, sidelines will be fired up.

No. 18 Cibola (3-1) at No. 12 Los Lunas (2-2): Cibola has already outplayed their projection. Los Lunas, although 2-2, is in fine shape. However, can the young Cougars take out the power Tigers? I'm curious to how Los Lunas responds to the loss last week at Roswell.

Socorro (2-1) vs No. 23 Robertson (4-0): Socorro entered the season with hype. We had them around where they sit now. This weekend they have a chance to take out a top-25 ranked team and number one team in 3A football. This classification is open for business and a good chance we see a close one but in our contradictory fashion it could also get away from Socorro early.

Most Intriguing Score of the Night - Week 5

Friday Night: Friday Night Takeaways

Improved Mr. Football Candidacy, Luke Padilla (Capital HS/2020)
Scoop: The junior running back rushed for 262-yards in a 41-0 route of Moriarty on Friday night. Padilla, became the all-time career leading rusher at Capital High School after the big night.

Golden-Toe, Zack Benedict (Rio Rancho HS/2019)
Scoop: Hit a 47-yard FG in a win over La Cueva on Friday night.

Favorites Flex in Convincing Fashion: Bloomfield rolls over Hope Christian, 32-7. The Bobcats improved to 5-0 on the season and have dominate in all contests. The other team to keep an eye on is the Portales Rams who walked by St. Pius X, 40-7 in a 1 vs 2 4A match-up. The first contender is up for sale? Lovington? They also won, over Alamogordo but that one ended in three quarters thanks to the rain.

Earned His Coaching Spot, John Cabos (Bernalillo HS): Santa Fe's historic season got hit with a 20-6 loss on the road to Bernalillo High School. Santa Fe was ranked in the Top-25 for the first time in school history. Bernalillo is now 4-1 on the season and winners of three straight.

We're Back, Rio Rancho HS: The Rams have pulled of three straight wins and now sit at 3-2 on the season. Those three wins come against ranked opponents, all three in the top-10 in the entire state.

Home Sweet Home, Los Lunas HS: The Tigers were home last night, homecoming night, and rolled passed a ranked Cibola team 42-12. The perfect rebound after a tough outing last week against Roswell and before welcoming a top-four, 5A ranked Goddard.

Two Underrated Games: Socorro 46-28 over Robertson, West Las Vegas 25-19 over Hatch Valley. A couple small school division games that continued to show the parity in the classifications played in 3A football.

UNM Attendance Figures Well Below NCAA Required 15k

Lobo football home games were reported to have less than 11k fans on average last season. The NCAA requires 15k average for a season, in a two year period. If UNM doesnt get to 15k this year, they can face sanctions from the NCAA like being banned from bowl consideration, regardless of record; or possibly being forced to drop to FCS. This is not a good look for the "flagship" university.

Two Horse Town Success

In terms of football we may see all 3 Valencia county schools split up. Belen for sure will stay 5A, but Los Lunas is nearing that 6A 1450 number and Valencia should more than likely drop to 4A.
In other sports Los Lunas is a lock to move up to 5A with Belen and Valencia staying put in 4A. Definitely will be interesting to see. Also, hopefully if they do drop Valencia down, the district doesn’t petition to stay up. Valencia needs to be down in football with declining numbers due to open enrollment.
Totally agree. The open enrollment has ultimately hurt this county.

Week 5: Five For Friday

No. 1 Cleveland (3-1) at No. 13 Artesia (3-1): "It's electric, yeah, it's electric" - Metallica. Could this be a shootout? Score operator get ready. The second ranked Cleveland Storm have won convincingly over top-25 ranked teams the last two weeks. They travel south to take on another in Artesia High School. This is the four meeting between the schools; Cleveland is 3-0 in the series with winning the last two years at home. What we get in this contest - two New Mexico Mr. Football candidates in Clay Houghtaling (QB/Artesia HS) and Dorian Lewis (RB/Cleveland), both seniors. Prediction: Cleveland 48, Artesia 35

No. 3 La Cueva (3-1) vs No. 5 Rio Rancho (2-2): "Cause you're hot then you're cold..." I believe a Katy Perry, game of the night. La Cueva has the studs, the defending champs, but for some reason we still need validation to put them as a number one contender, tonight that could happen. Rio Rancho entered with some steam, cooled with an 0-2 start, but back to warm. Another game with Mr. Football candidates )Chavez for RR and O'Toole for LC) but more excited to see a possible breakout game for rising studs in Zach Vigil (2021/RB) for the Rams and Brad Thomas (2020/WR) for the Bears. Prediction: La Cueva 35, Rio Rancho 34.

Mr. Football Candidate to Watch: Romeo Gbassagee (2019/Portales HS). The Portales Rams are coming off their first loss but head back into 4A action taking on St. Pius X (1-2). The Rams are favored in the game but this puts 1-2 ranked teams in the class. Gbassagee has been a name on our watch list for a year now and is having another stellar season. He has 28 total tackles on the season, 4 sacks, and just shy of 500 yards rushing (12.1 per carry) and a total of 7 touchdowns.

Still Perfect: No. 24 Santa Teresa (3-0). "Whatcha Know About That...." T.I on the song here. Little talked about this far in the season, and they haven't truly done 'enough' to stand out but a 4-0 start gets the Desert Warriors in the conversation for a top seed. They are favored in the game against Valencia (0-3) and they will still have to beat out Deming and Silver for the district championship but trend wise you have to take notice on one of the few left undefeated teams in the state. Others: No. 1 Volcano Vista (bye); No. 4 Centennial at Onate; No. Roswell at Miyamura; No. 10 Goddard at No. 12 Los Lunas (ALL EYES ON ME-TUPAC); No. 16 Farmington vs Durango, Colorado; No. 21 Bloomfield vs Hope Christian.

Playing for November: Alamogordo (1-1) at No. 22 Lovington (3-1). The Wildcats of Lovington are hot right now and does this become a "I'm Blue Da Ba Bee, Daba die" for a short stint for the Alamogordo Tigers? Alamogordo is the12th ranked team in 5A football and could be waaay too early to tell but it appears to be wide open (spaces Dixie Chicks) in the land of 5A bubble.

--- Add Song and storyline for tonight.
