FINAL PROJECTED 4A STATE TOURNAMENT SEEDINGS - SUNDAY NOON

Out of all the classes, this is the easiest one now with the rankings and such being a little clearer. Less three-way ties and more clean finishes with no playoffs and ties for first in district play. A small mix with Goddard, Los Alamos, and Grants and some potential drama in the last teams area but nothing more for now. Seeds should look similar come Sunday evening.

#1 KIRTLAND CENTRAL
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: W vs. Los Lunas
Wins vs. DC: Three (3) - Ignacio (CO), Los Lunas, and Navajo Prep
Overall Record: 24-3 for 88.89%
Maxpreps Rank: 1
Coaches Poll: 1

#2 LOS LUNAS
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: L vs. KC; W vs. Highland, 2-0 vs. Gallup
Wins vs. DC: Two (2) - Mayfield and Highland
Overall Record: 24-3 for 88.89%
Maxpreps Rank: 2
Coaches Poll: 2

#3 GALLUP
District Finish: 2nd
Head-to-Head: W vs. Pojoaque Valley; W vs. Portales
Wins vs. DC: Three (3) - Piedra Vista, Pojoaque Valley, and Portales
Overall Record: 21-8 for 73.10%
Maxpreps Rank: 3
Coaches Poll: 3

#4 POJOAQUE VALLEY
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: W vs. Portales, W vs. St. Pius X; L to Gallup
Wins vs. DC: Three (3) - Dulce, Penasco, and Portales
Overall Record: 23-4 for 85.19%
Maxpreps Rank: 4
Coaches Poll: 5

Note: Pojoaque still has a possibility of moving to the 3-seed IF they can get the Coaches' Input to rank them above Gallup. It's a 3-2-1 lead for Gallup that could swing either way depending on the input.

#5 HIGHLAND
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DC: None (0)
Overall Record:19-6 for 75.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 5
Coaches Poll: 4

Note: Lady Hornets hold tiebreaker versus Silver with Maxpreps rank and should hold on to the 5-seed. Highland actually has a small chance to jump ahead of Pojoaque IF they can get ahead in the Maxpreps' Ranking (Pojo = 18.0; High = 16.0) AND maintain their higher rank in the Coaches' Input.

#6 SILVER
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DC: Three (3) - Hatch Valley (twice) and Sandia Prep
Overall Record: 22-4 for 84.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 9
Coaches Poll: 6

Note: Again, they lose the tiebreaker to Highland on the 2-2-2 split with Highland holding the Maxpreps and Coaches ranking advantage. Silver has no shot to jump ahead in the Maxpreps but have only a slim chance on in the Coaches' Input IF they get enough votes.

#7 ST. PIUS X
District Finish: T-2nd
Head-to-Head: W vs. Los Alamos, W vs. Gallup; L vs. Pojoaque
Wins vs. DC: One (1) - Hatch Valley
Overall Record: 18-8 for 69.23%
Maxpreps Rank: 6
Coaches Poll: 8

Note: SPX has the 2-2-2 split with Portales and have the Maxpreps rank tiebreaker. That includes losing the Coaches' Input to Portales.

#8 PORTALES
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: L vs. Gallup, L vs. Pojoaque Valley
Wins vs. DC: One (1) - Sundown (TX)
Overall Record:15-11 for 57.69%
Maxpreps Rank: 7
Coaches Poll: 7

#9 ARTESIA
District Finish: 2nd
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DC: One (1) - Portales
Overall Record: 18-10 for 64.29%
Maxpreps Rank:10
Coaches Poll: 9

Note: Has Hope Christian beat narrowly in each of the rankings criteria (Maxpreps: Artesia 10.9 to Hope's 10.0) . So yes, we could see Artesia switch places with Hope. Just a change in coaches' input won't impact this enough.

#10 HOPE CHRISTIAN
District Finish: 2nd
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DC: None (0)
Overall Record: 15-13 for 53.57%
Maxpreps Rank: 11
Coaches Poll: 10

#11 GODDARD
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: W vs. Grants
Wins vs. DC: One (1) - Sundown (TX)
Overall Record: Currently 15-11 for 57.69%
Maxpreps Rank: 14
Coaches Poll: 13

#12 GRANTS
District Finish: T-2nd
Head-to-Head: L vs. Espanola Valley, L vs. Goddard; 1-1 vs. Bernalillo
Wins vs. DC: Two (2) - Navajo Prep and Sandia Prep
Overall Record:12-15 for 44.44%
Maxpreps Rank: 15
Coaches Poll: 14

Note: The surprise move in the Maxpreps' Rankings to jump ahead of Los Alamos now gives them the 12-seed even with losing the Coaches' Input. It's a 2-2-2 tie with LA and they have the tiebreaker with Maxpreps rank.

#13 LOS ALAMOS
District Finish: 2nd
Head-to-Head: W vs. Artesia
Wins vs. DC: One (1) - Pojoaque Valley
Overall Record: 13-15 for 46.43%
Maxpreps Rank: 16
Coaches Poll: 11

#14 ESPANOLA VALLEY
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: W vs. Grants
Wins vs. DC: None (0)
Overall Record: 15-11 for 57.69%
Maxpreps Rank: 12
Coaches Poll: 15

UPDATE [11:30AM]: Grants moving ahead of Los Alamos threw a wrench in EV's projected standings and now Grants moves up while LA falls down a spot and so too does EV.

#15 BERNALILLO
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: 1-1 vs. Grants
Wins vs. DC: Three (3) - Sandia Prep, Melrose, and McCurdy
Overall Record: 15-12 for 55.56%
Maxpreps Rank: 20
Coaches Poll: 16

Note: District final standings keeps Valley from moving ahead. Plus, they got the criteria to stay ahead of the other at-large teams.

#16(a) VALLEY
District Finish: 4th
Head-to-Head: L vs. Belen
Wins vs. DC: None (0)
Overall Record: Currently 15-11 for 57.69%
Maxpreps Rank: 18
Coaches Poll: No votes

Note: Holding on to the last spot over Shiprock with the 2-2-2 split. All Shiprock really needs is that Coaches Input to put them in over Valley and Valley could be out. For the time being though, and with the Maxpreps tiebreaker, Valley is in.

#16(b) SHIPROCK
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DC: One (1) - Dulce
Overall Record: 10-17 for 37.04%
Maxpreps Rank: 19
Coaches Poll: No Votes

Note: Again, small window of opportunity if there's enough votes from the Coaches' Input to put Shiprock in ahead of Valley to win that 2-2-2 split.

FINAL PROJECTED STATE TOURNAMENT SEEDINGS - SUNDAY AFTERNOON

1kjEGBT.png

No. 1 Melrose
District Finish: T-1st
Head-to-Head (H2H): 4-1 vs. Logan
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Cliff and Cimarron
Overall Record: 21-6 for 77.78%
Maxpreps Rank: 2
Coaches' Poll: 1

Note: It was almost Logan but the H2H is 4-1 in favor of Melrose. Now if they use critera, then Logan has the advantage. But I'm fairly certain they'll use the H2H record and seed Melrose as the #1 seed.

No. 2 Logan
District Finish: T-1st
Head-to-Head: 1-4 vs. Melrose; 1-1 vs. Tatum
Wins vs. DCs: Three (3) - Tucumcari, Tatum, and Melrose
Overall Record: 22-6 for 78.57%
Maxpreps Rank: 1
Coaches' Poll: 3

Note: Logan and Tatum were tied in criteria, but because they split their head-to-head meetings, the Maxpreps ranking was used and Logan gets the 2-seed.

No. 3 Tatum
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: W vs. Pine Hill; 1-1 vs. Logan
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Pine Hill and Loving
Overall Record: 23-4 for 85.19%
Maxpreps Rank: 4
Coaches' Poll: 2

Note: If they didn't beat Pine Hill, they would've likely only dropped back a spot. The H2H win came in handy late this season in keeping them in the top 3. Could still fall back if Pine Hill gets help from Coaches' Input.

No. 4 Pine Hill
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: 0-1 vs. Tatum; 1-0 vs. Quemado
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 25-2 for 92.59%
Maxpreps Rank: 3
Coaches' Poll: 5

Note: Pine Hill actually tied 2-2-2 with Cliff, but held the tiebreaker with the Maxpreps ranking (with nearly a 3 point rating advantage). Could make a jump at the 3-seed with help from Coaches Input.

No. 5 Cliff
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - Cimarron
Overall Record: 20-7 for 74.07%
Maxpreps Rank: 5
Coaches' Poll: 4

No. 6 Quemado
District Finish: 2nd
Head-to-Head: 0-1 vs. Pine Hill
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) vs. Mescalero Apache
Overall Record: 20-8 for 71.43%
Maxpreps Rank: 6
Coaches' Poll: 6

No. 7 Animas
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: W vs. Jemez Valley and Cimarron
Wins vs. DCs: Four (4) - Cimarron, Cliff (twice), and Melrose
Overall Record: 19-9 for 67.86%
Maxpreps Rank: 7
Coaches' Poll: 7

No. 8 Elida
District Finish: 2nd
Head-to-Head: 2-0 vs. Fort Sumner
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - Mescalero Apache
Overall Record: 14-7 for 66.67%
Maxpreps Rank: 8
Coaches' Poll: 8

No. 9 Cimarron
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 18-9 for 66.67%
Maxpreps Rank: 9
Coaches' Poll: 9

No. 10 Des Moines
District Finish: 2nd
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Cimarron and Hondo Valley
Overall Record: 15-10 for 60.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 12
Coaches' Poll: 11

Note: The reality is there's a mess here between Des Moines, Fort, Hondo, and Jemez. Truth is any of these four teams could fall in the order between the 10-seed and 13-seed. There's two intersecting three-way ties here that I'm curious how the NMAA will work their way through. Again, this is all without knowing the true Coaches' Input.

No. 11 Fort Sumner
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: 1-0 vs. Hondo Valley; 1-0 vs. Dora; 0-1 vs. Elida
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - Hondo Valley
Overall Record: 13-13 for 50.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 10
Coaches' Poll: 10

No. 12 Hondo Valley
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: 0-1 vs. Fort Sumner
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Loving (twice)
Overall Record: 17-10 for 62.96%
Maxpreps Rank: 16
Coaches' Poll: 12

No. 13 Jemez Valley
District Finish: 2nd
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - McCurdy
Overall Record: 18-8 for 69.23%
Maxpreps Rank: 11
Coaches' Poll: 14

No. 14 Roy/Mosquero
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 15-7 for 68.18%
Maxpreps Rank: 13
Coaches' Poll: 15

No. 15 Dora
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 15-11 for 57.69%
Maxpreps Rank: 14
Coaches' Poll: 13

No. 16 To'hajiilee
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 13-12 for 52.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 15
Coaches' Poll: No Votes

Note: Next up was Walatowa Charter after beating out Gateway for the Next In Line spot. But because To'hajiilee finished higher than Walatowa in district, Walatowa has next to no chance without a district tournament win.

FINAL PROJECTED STATE TOURNAMENT SEEDING - Sunday Afternoon

aezBByx.png

No. 1 Texico
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: 2-0 vs. Pecos
Wins vs. DCs: Five (5) - Tatum (twice), Tucumcari (twice), and Melrose
Overall Record: 22-3 for 88.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 1
Coaches' Poll: 1

Note: Texico has it outright. True #1 seed.

No. 2. Penasco
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: W vs. Dulce; L vs. Pecos
Wins vs. DCs: Five (5) - Cimarron (twice), McCurdy (twice), and Dulce
Overall Record: 24-3 for 88.89%
Maxpreps Rank: 2
Coaches' Poll: 2

UPDATE: Penasco has a chance to get the 1-seed. Will need overwhelming support in Coaches' Poll but that's the only way they can get it.

No. 3 Pecos
District Finish: 2nd
Head-To-Head: 0-2 vs. Texico, W vs. Estancia, W vs. Penasco.
Wins vs. DCs: Three (3) - Estancia, Penasco, and McCurdy
Overall Record: 19-6 for 76.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 3
Coaches' Poll: 3

UPDATE: It's still looking a bit shaky. Dulce and Lordsburg can overtake Pecos for the 3-seed. With Lordsburg and Dulce it could turn into a 3-way tie and the wild tiebreaker that could place any of the three in the 3-seed. This is the first of many messes coming up in 2A.

No. 4 Dulce
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: L vs. Penasco
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - McCurdy and Navajo Prep
Overall Record: 20-6 for 77.78%
Maxpreps Rank: 5
Coaches' Poll: 5

UPDATE: While they can't lose to Estancia with the tiebreaker and such, they can lose to a Clayton team if the Lady Yellowjackets get enough votes to push them ahead of Dulce.

No. 5 Lordsburg
District Finish: T-1st
Head-To-Head: 2-2 vs. Mescalero Apache
Wins vs. DCs: Three (3) - Cliff (twice) and Mescalero Apache
Overall Record: 21-8 for 72.41%
Maxpreps Rank: 6
Coaches' Poll: 7
.
No. 6 Clayton
District Finish: 3rd
Head-To-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: Three (3) - Cimarron (twice) and Logan
Overall Record: 15-11 for 57.69%
Maxpreps Rank: 4
Coaches' Poll: 8

UPDATE: Previously, I had said Clayton couldn't finish better than Estancia. Well, as the numbers worked and I projected Clayton to have a favorable Coaches' Input, they can in fact jump ahead of Estancia. I still think Clayton won't be seeded higher than this but with the way 2A is and my overall confidence I really can't say with 100% confidence anymore.

No. 7 Estancia
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: L vs. Pecos
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - McCurdy
Overall Record: 21-5 for 80.77%
Maxpreps Rank: 8
Coaches' Poll: 4

No. 8 Mescalero Apache
District Finish: T-1st
Head-To-Head: 2-2 vs. Lordsburg
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - Hondo Valley
Overall Record: 20-7 for 74.07%
Maxpreps Rank: 7
Coaches' Poll: 6

No. 9 Magdalena
District Finish: T-2nd
Head-To-Head: 2-1 vs. Alamo Navajo
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Pine Hill and Melrose
Overall Record: 18-10 for 64.29%
Maxpreps Rank: 9
Coaches' Poll: 9

No. 10 Alamo Navajo
District Finish: T-2nd
Head-To-Head: 1-2 vs. Magdalena
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - Hondo Valley
Overall Record: 18-10 for 64.29%
Maxpreps Rank: 11
Coaches' Poll: 13

No. 11 Cloudcroft
District Finish: 3rd
Head-To-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Hondo Valley (twice)
Overall Record: 16-10 for 61.54%
Maxpreps Rank: 12
Coaches' Poll: 16

Note: Cloudcroft is one of those teams that I wish had their fair shot at a title run. But they finished behind Mescalero and Lordsburg while also not getting the key wins they needed. But for the time being they're in the tournament field. That might change though if District 4 gets a different district tournament winner and with Loving already claiming one auto-bid, it might send Cloudcroft back home.

No. 12 Rehoboth Christian
District Finish: T-2nd
Head-To-Head (H2H): 2-1 vs. Newcomb; 1-1 vs. Tse' Yi' Gai
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 17-11 for 60.71%
Maxpreps Rank: 13
Coaches' Poll: 10

Note: Every team in the 11-seed through 15-seed mix could be moved around in almost any order given the amount of 3-way ties (rock-paper-scissors conundrum in criteria points). Using the NMAA's method (not at all specific on some details) this is the order that drew out.
It's all because of the district finish between Rehoboth, Newcomb, and Tse' Yi' Gai who all finished tied for 2nd place. I gave Rehoboth the advantage after summing up the head-to-head record between the three of them (Rehoboth 3-2; TYG 2-2; Newcomb 2-3).

No. 13 McCurdy
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 16-10 for 61.54%
Maxpreps Rank: 16
Coaches' Poll: 11

Note: I'm not a big fan of McCurdy here at the 12-seed. But wildly enough, they got criteria points to hang in this area of the bracket. They even have a winning hand against Newcomb (told you it was a mess).

No. 14 Newcomb
District Finish: T-2nd
Head-To-Head: 1-2 vs. Rehoboth; 1-1 vs. Tse' Yi' Gai
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - Dulce
Overall Record: 15-14 for 51.72%
Maxpreps Rank: 10
Coaches' Poll: 12

Note: It's not what I like that matters but the criteria matchups. Newcomb could just as easily be in the 10-spot or in the 14-seed. It all comes down to how this tie works itself out. Another win against a District Champion (Dulce) could come in handy. I gave them the benefit against TYG but that could easily be swapped.

No. 15 Tse' Yi' Gai
District Finish: T-2nd
Head-To-Head: 1-1 vs. Rehoboth Christian; 1-1 vs. Newcomb
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 15-8 for 65.22%
Maxpreps Rank: 14
Coaches' Poll: 14

No. 16 Loving
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: 5-0 vs. Jal; 0-2 vs. 1-2 vs. Eunice
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 15-11 for 57.69%
Maxpreps Rank: 18
Coaches' Poll: 15

Note: I'm not a big fan of district champs on the road especially as a 16-seed (it's happened before; ask Alamogordo). It's just the way the criteria falls, and if you don't get the necessary wins in the regular season, this is where you'll find yourself. Thankfully, Loving has earned their spot after that whole debacle with the district not even thinking of holding a playoff game for first (after the 3-way tie) and basically handing Jal the auto-bid.

#1 ROBERTSON
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: 3-1 vs. SFIS; 0-1 vs. Tucumcari
Wins vs. DCs: Five (5) - Portales (twice), Farwell (TX), Texico, and Silver
Overall Record: 25-2 for 92.59%
Maxpreps Rank: 1
Coaches Poll: 1

Note: Clear and by far the #1 team in 3A.

#2 SANTA FE INDIAN
District Finish: 2nd
Head-To-Head: 1-3 vs. Robertson; W vs. Navajo Prep; W vs. Sandia Prep
Wins vs. DCs: Six (6) - McCurdy, Dulce, Navajo Prep, Sandia Prep, Pojoaque Valley, and Robertson
Overall Record: 24-4 for 85.71%
Maxpreps Rank: 2
Coaches Poll: 3

Note: They were the apparent 2-seed just narrowly ahead of Tucumcari. Their rating had some cushion and this win against Robertson definitely tightens their grip on this seed.

#3 TUCUMCARI
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: W vs. Robertson, W vs. West Las Vegas
Wins vs. DCs: Three (3) - McCurdy, Estancia, and Robertson
Overall Record: 21-4 for 84.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 3
Coaches Poll: 2

#4 HATCH VALLEY
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: W vs. Sandia Prep; W vs. St. Michael's
Wins vs. DCs: Three (3) - Sandia Prep, Cliff, and Estancia
Overall Record: 22-5 for 81.48%
Maxpreps Rank: 5
Coaches Poll: 4

Note: For awhile there it looked like maybe Navajo Prep was going to jump them for the 4-seed but Hatch had just enough to hold off the Eagles from swapping places.

#5 NAVAJO PREP
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: W vs. Sandia Prep
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Mescalero Apache and Sandia Prep
Overall Record: 19-9 for 67.86%

#8 WEST LAS VEGAS
District Finish: T-3rd
Head-To-Head: 2-1 vs. St. Michael's
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 17-11 for 60.71%
Maxpreps Rank: 6
Coaches Poll: 8

Note: West benefited from a drop in Tohatchi's ranking, likely from their loss to Crownpoint. Now instead of heading on the road, West is projected to stay home.

#9 TOHATCHI
District Finish: 2nd
Head-To-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 14-13 for 51.85%
Maxpreps Rank: 8
Coaches Poll: 10

Note: Three-way tie (in my interpretation) gave Tohatchi the advantage IF Sandia Prep won the Coaches' Input. Even in the event that Sandia Prep doesn't get that help in Coaches' Input, Tohatchi sticks to the 9-seed. Still a lot could happen, but I'm now fairly confident in Tohatchi staying ahead.

#10 CROWNPOINT
District Finish: 3rd
Head-To-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Navajo Prep and Mescalero Apache
Overall Record: 17-12 for 58.62%
Maxpreps Rank: 10
Coaches Poll: No votes

Note: Crownpoint has the better criteria against St. Michael's and Sandia Prep but it's really up to Tohatchi's position as to where Crownpoint will finally end up. At this 11-seed is their floor in seeding with Sandia Prep jumping to the 9-seed.

#11 ST. MICHAEL'S
District Finish: T-3rd
Head-To-Head: 1-2 vs. West Las Vegas; 1-1 vs. Sandia Prep
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - Sandia Prep
Overall Record: 11-15 for 42.31%
Maxpreps Rank: 11
Coaches Poll: 8

Note: St. Michael's splitting with Sandia Prep their head-to-head games might be the best thing to happen for the Lady Horsemen. Not only did it keep them from falling to the 12-seed (their floor seed), but it kept Sandia Prep from jumping to the 9-seed. There's still a possibility given the outcome of the NMAA's three-way tie procedure but St. Mike's has the criteria advantage over Sandia Prep.

#12 SANDIA PREP
District Finish: 1st
Head-To-Head: 1-1 vs. St. Michael's
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record:16-11 for 59.26%
Maxpreps Rank: 13
Coaches Poll: 11

Note: IF in the event Sandia Prep gets some support in the Coaches' Input and surpasses Tohatchi, it'll still force a three-way tie that they may not come out of on top. In my interpretation, Sandia Prep remains at the 12-seed.

#13 THOREAU
District Finish: 4th
Head-To-Head: W vs. Cuba; L vs. Laguna-Acoma
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 15-12 for 55.56%
Maxpreps Rank: 12
Coaches Poll: 12

#14 CUBA
District Finish: 2nd
Head-To-Head: L vs. Thoreau
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) vs. Sandia Prep
Overall Record: 12-11 for 52.17%
Maxpreps Rank: 16
Coaches Poll: No votes

#15 COBRE
District Finish: 3rd
Head-To-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record:11-17 for 39.29%
Maxpreps Rank: 14
Coaches Poll: 16

Note: It was actually a 2-2-2 split with Dexter for the final spot but the Maxpreps' rankings is used as the tiebreaker and Cobre has a HUGE cushion to maintain their projected seeding.

#16 LAGUNA-ACOMA
District Finish: 3rd
Head-To-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 14-13 for 51.85%
Maxpreps Rank: 15
Coaches Poll: No votes

FINAL PROJECTIONS AS OF SUNDAY NOON (UPDATED MAXPREPS RANKINGS AS OF 11AM)

YvsCrh8.png

#1 Hobbs
District Finish: T-1st
Head-to-Head: L to West Mesa; None vs. PV
Wins vs. DCs: Six (6) - Mayfield, Franklin (TX), Trinity Christian (TX), Kirtland Central, Seminole (TX), and Trinity Christian (TX) again.
Overall Record: 26-2 for 92.59%
Maxpreps Rank: 2
Coaches' Poll: 2

Note: Hobbs stayed ahead of Piedra Vista in the Maxpreps' Rankings and ended up likely clinching the 1-seed for the state tournament.

This rankings move can likely be attributed to Hobbs two wins against Trinity Christian (TX), an opponent they defeated twice this season who made a run to the 4A TAPPS State Championship and won. Playoff wins are worth more (per Maxpreps' explanation) and with TC winning Friday and Saturday, that was enough for Hobbs to hold off PV's win against the ranked #1 team in New Mexico.

#2 Piedra Vista
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Kirtland Central and Sandia
Overall Record: Currently 23-3 at 88.46%
Maxpreps Rank: 3
Coaches' Poll: 1

Note: Piedra Vista did not get the push in the Maxpreps' ranking they needed.

#3 West Mesa
District Finish: 2nd
Head-to-Head: W vs. Hobbs
Wins vs. DCs: Four (4) - Los Lunas, Hobbs, Mayfield, and Volcano Vista
Overall Record: 24-3 for 88.89%
Maxpreps Rank: 1
Coaches' Poll: 3

Note: A win or loss wouldn't have affected them much at all against PV. They're locked in at the 3-seed with the huge lead in the Maxpreps Rankings.

#4 Carlsbad
District Finish: T-1st
Head-to-Head: L vs. West Mesa; W vs. Mayfield
Wins vs. DCs: Six (6) - Americas (TX), Silver, Mayfield, Pojoaque Valley, Portales, Hobbs
Overall Record: 24-5 for 82.76%
Maxpreps Rank: 5
Coaches' Poll: 4

#5 Volcano Vista
District Finish: T-1st
Head-to-Head: Ls vs. La Cueva (twice) and West Mesa; Ws Sandia and Rio Rancho
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Sandia and Highland
Overall Record: 20-5 for 80.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 7
Coaches' Poll: 5

Note: Volcano Vista now has a 4-1-1 advantage over Farmington with Farmington only winning the point for Wins vs. DCs and the "tie" for H2H as the two never played against each other.

Volcano Vista dropped to the 6-seed because they dropped in their Maxpreps Ranking.

UPDATE [3/3 11:30AM]: New maxpreps rankings update has VV ranked ahead of Mayfield. VV now projected to take the 5-seed.

#5 Mayfield
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: L vs. Hobbs, L vs. La Cueva, L vs. West Mesa, L vs. Carlsbad; W vs. Rio Rancho, W vs. Cleveland,
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 23-5 for 82.14%
Maxpreps Rank: 6
Coaches' Poll: 8

Note: Mayfield getting the 5-seed depended on if they jumped Volcano Vista in the rankings. They did.

UPDATE [3/3 11:30AM]: Then they didn't. VV jumps Mayfield in Maxpreps and Mayfield falls back to the 6-seed.

#7 Farmington
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: Ws vs. Rio Rancho
Wins vs. DCs: Three (3) - Dulce, Sandia, and Piedra Vista
Overall Record: 21-8 for 72.41%
Maxpreps Rank: 8
Coaches' Poll: 7

#8 La Cueva
District Finish: 4th
Head-to-Head: Ws vs. Mayfield, Volcano Vista (twice), Sandia, Rio Rancho
Wins vs. DCs: Six (6) - Volcano Vista (twice), Mayfield, Highland (twice), and Sandia
Overall Record: 18-7 for 72%
Maxpreps Rank: 4
Coaches' Poll: 6

Note: Great resume of critera, but district finish behind Farmington forces them back to the 8-seed.

#10 Sandia
District Finish: 1st
Head-to-Head: Ws vs. Onate
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record:19-6 for 76.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 11
Coaches' Poll: 9

UPDATE [11:30AM]: New Maxpreps rankings pushes Sandia ahead of Rio Rancho for the 10-seed. Advantage could still go back to Rio Rancho though if Coaches' Input place them ahead of Sandia.

Note: Sandia didn't move in the Maxpreps' Rankings. Funny enough they're tied at 17.1 in the rating with Rio Rancho (Cleveland jumped them in the rankings). But in Maxpreps, it's likely they just round up to the nearest tenth for presentation purposes. They have better criteria than Alamogordo and every other team behind them.

#11 Rio Rancho
District Finish: T-1st
Head-to-Head: Ws vs. Sandia
Wins vs. DCs: Three (3) - Highland, Sandia, and Volcano Vista
Overall Record: 17-10 for 62.96%
Maxpreps Rank: 10
Coaches' Poll: 10

UPDATED [11:30AM]: New Maxpreps Rankings allow Sandia to jump ahead of Rio Rancho. RR can still regain the 9-seed if Coaches' Input place them ahead of Sandia

Note: Close call but the loss to Cleveland allowed the Storm to jump them in the rankings. Fortunately for the Lady Rams, the Maxpreps drop doesn't affect their seedings. While they also appeared to be tied in the ratings with Sandia, Maxpreps (my assumption) rounds up to the nearest tenth instead of showing the whole rating number.

#12 Cleveland
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: Ws. vs. Farmington, and Centennial
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Sandia and Highland
Overall Record: 19-10 for 65.52%
Maxpreps Rank: 9
Coaches' Poll: 11

UPDATE [11:30AM]: Even though Cleveland finishes ahead of Sandia and Rio Rancho, district order in the standings dictate that Cleveland MUST finish behind Rio Rancho. Because Rio Rancho has the poor match with Sandia now, Cleveland must also fall behind Sandia after Rio Rancho.

#12 Alamogordo
District Finish: 2nd
Head-to-Head: Ls vs. Piedra Vista and Cibola
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - Navajo Prep
Overall Record: 21-8 for 72.41%
Maxpreps Rank: 12
Coaches' Poll: 12

Note: Alamogordo, Centennial, Onate, and Deming all finished in sequence and will be seeded as such with no better resumes to move higher for Alamogordo.

#13 Centennial
District Finish: 3rd
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: Three (3) - Los Lunas, Piedra Vista, and Americas (TX)
Overall Record: 14-13 for 51.85%
Maxpreps Rank: 13
Coaches' Poll: 14

#14 Onate
District Finish: 4th
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Silver and Americas (TX)
Overall Record: 15-13 for 53.57%
Maxpreps Rank: 14
Coaches' Poll: No Votes

#15 Deming
District Finish: 5th
Head-to-Head: N/A
Wins vs. DCs: Two (2) - Penasco and Silver
Overall Record: 16-11 for 59.26%
Maxpreps Rank: 16
Coaches' Poll: No Votes

Note: Deming could fall back to the 16-seed if the Coaches' Input puts Eldorado ahead of them. If that's the case, Las Cruces, Manzano, and Albuquerque's bid to sneak in at that 16-seed is done for as Deming has the better criteria against all of those teams.

#16(a) Eldorado
District Finish: 5th
Head-to-Head: Ws vs. Albuquerque (twice) and Cibola
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 9-16 for 36.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 15
Coaches' Poll: No Votes

Note: Right now, Eldorado actually has a losing criteria against Manzano. Eldo' is also tied in the criteria with Las Cruces and Albuquerque, although in those matchings Eldorado owns the tiebreaker. But! If say, Las Cruces gets the nod and is ranked ahead of Eldo' in the Coaches' Input, then Las Cruces would move ahead of Eldo' in the 16-seed.

LAST TWO "OUT"

#16(b) Las Cruces
District Finish: 6th
Head-to-Head: Ws vs. Manzano and Clovis
Wins vs. DCs: One (1) - Americas (TX)
Overall Record:11-17 for 39.29%
Maxpreps Rank: 17
Coaches' Poll: No Votes

Note: Has the lead in criteria against Manzano and Albuquerque. Can jump ahead of Eldorado for the 16-seed if they are ranked ahead of Eldorado in the Coaches' Input.

#16(c) Manzano
District Finish: T-2nd
Head-to-Head: Ls vs. Las Cruces, Albuquerque; Ws vs. Albuquerque (twice)
Wins vs. DCs: None (0)
Overall Record: 12-13 for 48.00%
Maxpreps Rank: 19
Coaches' Poll: No Votes

Girls Hoops - Bracket Maker: 2019 Edition

Tell you what, friends of the forums. If you don't feel like making a prediction on an overall bracket I'll do one for you! After the final Maxpreps' Rankings come out tomorrow I'll use your predictions below as the FINAL Coaches' Input in my bracket-maker.

Instructions
1. In a post below, rank at least 16 teams for ANY classification (If you can rank 20 that's even better).

I'll quote your predicted Coaches' Input with the new projected seedings.

I'll do this up until the final hour prior to the brackets scheduled release. So about 5:00 PM-ish.

Saturday Hoops In New Mexico - Championship Day

Capital (21-8) at Santa Fe (20-7). District 5-5A Championship. Gone to the game. The city of Santa Fe will pack the house - The Toby Roybal gymnasium tonight as the two 5A programs battle for the district tournament championship. Capital leans on the shoulders of scoring abilities of TJ Sanchez (19 points per game) who recently broke the single game scoring record of 39 points. Santa Fe has been one of the hottest teams as of late, early too, but can cap off a year with a DC. When you cast your ballot for coach of the year Zack Cole has to be a vote.

Season Series: Santa Fe 2-1.

Scoop: Capital has played back into the playoff picture as of late. Santa Fe arguing and likely get a home game in the opening round of State.

Prediction: Santa Fe but don't get comfortable because this one will get hot.

Cleveland (24-5) at Volcano Vista (20-4):
District 1-5A Championship: In our bold, not really bold, statement from this week was taking the 4-seed Cleveland Storm to play in the championship game. Cleveland won three games this week over 5-Cibola, 3-Atrisco, and last night 83-74 over Rio Rancho. The Storm got 33-points last night from top prospect Aamer Muhammad as they took out crosstown rival Rio Rancho. Volcano Vista, a team in the conversation for the 1-seed in the post season has 20-wins on the season and looking to cap the year off with a district tournament championship at their home court.

Meaning: All four of the top teams in this district should earn a top-8 seed but this one could put Cleveland in the top-5, maybe they already are in the top-5 seeds.

Season Series: Volcano Vista 2-1 (70-71, 58-57, 73-71).

Prediction: Volcano Vista but very close and likely in OT.

Gateway Christian (18-7) at Tatum (21-6):
District 4-1A Championship. Gateway and Tatum will square off as the top two teams from this classification and split the regular season series, Gateway took the last game (55-42). Tatum the regular season champion took is perfect at home this season at 9-0 and hope to earn the 10th. Both are floating around 55-52 points per game this season.

Scoop: Both are ranked around 8th in the classification and the winner could earn a first-round home game.

Prediction: Tatum 54, Gateway 53

Eldorado (20-6) at La Cueva (16-9): District 2-5A Championship. Hello ole friend. The northeast rivalry is back, for the 2019 season at least. The La Cueva Bears took the one game playoff on Monday of this week, 70-64, and although they won could be on the road in the opening round as the "District Champion" according to the seeding criteria. La Cueva features the shooting hand of Derek Aeilts (2020) who is putting up around 21 points per game. Eldorado looks to the senior backcourt duo of Cameron Carter and Tyler Quintana.

Scoop: Who gets a home game.

Season Series: La Cueva 2-1

Prediction: Eldorado.

Ruidoso (17-10) at Silver (12-4):
The District 3-4A Championship. Ruidoso took a surprising loss to end the regular season to district cellar Santa Teresa but the Warriors are looking to earn their bid to State. Silver has 21-wins on the season, again, and looking to make their case for a top seed in the 4A bracket come Saturday. No matter the classification head coach Brandon Siqueiros churns out a tough squad - this one featuring one of the best players in the state guard Tristin Moore (2019).

What does it mean: Silver is IN, Ruidoso on the Bubble.

Season Series: Silver 2-0 (78-56; 78-60)

Prediction: Silver (-11)

What Else Is On the Menu

Des Moines (11-14) at Maxwell (19-4)
Escalente (19-9) at Mora (20-8)
Melrose (20-7) at Fort Sumner (20-7)

Miyamura (15-12) at Gallup (22-5)
Monte Del Sol (17-10) at Maxwell (19-4)
NMMI (8-8) at Dexter (15-11)

The Albuquerque Journal is reporting that as a consequence of three fans being ejected in the Estancia-Menaul boys district tournament game at Menaul the NMAA is handing out the following punishments:

1. Estancia will NOT have a 1st-round home game at state (even if they are a top-8 seed).

2. NO Estancia fans will be allowed at its 1st-round state game (Boys game only; Girls games not impacted)

CLASS 5A

District 1 - Cleveland at Volcano Vista
Cleveland hasn't had a statement win this district season until they finally defeated Rio Rancho after losing 6-straight meetings. Not sure it helps Cleveland to win but everyone likes championship hardware.

District 2 - West Mesa at Piedra Vista at 6PM
Part III and this one is critical for PV. A win and they'll likely jump ahead of Hobbs again for one last push for the #1 rankings (right now, they're back out at the 2-seed). A loss and they'll have to settle for the 2-seed. West Mesa can't improve their position, but can get some hardware and a road win on PV's court.

District 4 - Carlsbad at Hobbs at 6PM
Hobbs has to win to maintain their grip on the 1-seed. A loss to Carlsbad again at home would cost them. Carlsbad is just looking to put on a better game than their dismal start to the playoff game from Monday.

District 5 - Albuquerque at Sandia at 2PM
Albuquerque has won three games this week and in this fourth game might run out of fuel. They're one of my favorite teams to watch though but Sandia has too much firepower and talent.

CLASS 4A

District 2 - Los Alamos at Pojoaque Valley
The last time these two teams played in Ben Lujan there was blown leads, overtimes, and missed free throws. This one should be another classic. Then again, I think Pojoaque is sick and tired of close games at home and want the blowout win.

District 3 - Santa Teresa at Silver
Silver wins. That is all.

District 5 - St. Pius X at Los Lunas
SPX narrowly escaped against Grants at home, but now face a bad mismatch. Pius' strength all season long has been their defense. But again, I don't think they have the offense to keep up with Los Lunas.

District 6 - Hope Christian at Highland
These two will clash again. I don't like the long layover for both teams so maybe there's some rust early that allows Hope to maybe take the lead. A win here for Hope would be huge but likely not in the projected seeding.

CLASS 3A

District 3 - Cobre at Hatch Valley
Cobre's Skkyla Guck and company have willed their way to the district finale against Hatch Valley. I'd put Hatch on upset watch, but I'm fairly certain they've been hard at work to avoid another home loss like the one they had against Socorro. This one should be fun to see.

District 5 - Laguna-Acoma at Sandia Prep
If you're not into big school hoops but want some wild, possibly thrilling basketball? This one might be for you. LA got the big win at Cuba and now get the rematch they've been wanting. Laguna-Acoma has done well enough each time against Prep but until LA can put two quality road wins together I'm out on the Lady Hawks and high on the Sundevils.

CLASS 2A

District 2 - ATC at McCurdy
McCurdy in this one.

District 4 - Jal at Loving
They'll meet for the fifth time this season today. Jal is 0-4 and had to cause controversy before giving in to a playoff game with Loving. Now Jal is playing for an auto-bid on the line. It could possible knock out Cloudcroft out of the tournament! Or even Tse' Yi' Gai or Newcomb.

CLASS 1A

District 1 - Jemez Valley at Pine Hill
Jemez Valley is good but I don't think nearly as good as Pine Hill. Pine Hill wins big.

District 2 - Quemado at Cliff
Quemado can't improve their seeding with a win but since they were swept by Cliff all district season, I'm sure they want to steal this title game in Cliff.
