Thursday Baseball

What to Watch on Thursday
Aztec at Farmington
Bloomfield at Gallup
Laguna-Acoma at Estancia
Magdalena at Tohatchi
McCurdy at Tierra Encantada
Mesa Vista at Penasco
Miyamura at Kirtland Central
Rehoboth at Zuni
Ruidoso at NMMI
Santa Fe Indian at Bernalillo
Santa Fe Prep at Pecos
Shiprock at Navajo Prep
Tucumcari at Dexter
Wingate at Thoreau

What Matters: Aztec could play upset tonight in Farmington but Miyamura can't afford to slip against Kirtland Central either. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened tonight. Farmington and Miyamura are the better teams but the direction 5A is going this season a loss isn't out of the question. How good is Santa Fe Indian? A game with Bernalillo could be a test for a 4-5A district that has plenty of uncertainty.

What Happened on Wednesday
Albuquerque Academy 7, Valley 2
Espanola Valley 11, Del Norte 1
Mora 21, Questa 0
Rio Grande 12, Manzano 4
Robertson 7, Pojoaque Valley 3

What Mattered: Del Norte falling to Espanola could be the biggest collapse of the night. The Knights could now be in jeopardy of missing the playoffs as they drop into the 3rd slot in 2-5A. Albuquerque Academy could be the biggest wildcard in 5A baseball as they now could climb into the top-8 playoff seed talks (we had them behind DN at 13 yesterday) and now move up. Rio Grande continues to build for the playoffs and Manzano could be all but popped.

TUESDAY TAKEAWAYS - BIG THREE
1) Grants beating Belen, 6-3, is that standout score in terms of upset. Grants also adds to their resume and now should be off the bubble for good.

2) On the player notes - what a day for Aaron Natera (Artesia). The young man hit 4 homeruns and 10 RBIs in a district contest against Lovington.

3) Deming with the sweep of Santa Teresa (10-2; 7-6) is number three of the big three from Tuesday. This shakes up the bracket watch for later today.

WEDNESDAY
Manzano and Rio Grande square off today. Rio Grande looking to stay within the 10-12 range of potential seeds. Manzano is a bubble team in need of a big win or it'll burst.
Del Norte needs to beat Espanola Valley in order to stay with Albuquerque Academy for the 2-5A title.

BIG THREE FOR TUESDAY
Deming vs Santa Teresa: The Deming Wildcats (7-7) have a showdown and get the first crack at Santa Teresa (11-2) on their home field today. It is a doubleheader. One of these could come down to the final innings as both teams warmup as the game goes on. Prediction: Santa Teresa 7, Deming 4; Deming 5, Santa Teresa 4.

Rio Rancho at Piedra Vista: Both teams ranked in the NMPreps.com Top-10 and both looking as favorites to make noise in the state tournament. Piedra Vista (14-7) has opened district play going 3-0 and look to close out the first round of games perfect. Rio Rancho (15-6) has recovered winning the last two games after losing the district opener.

Texico at Santa Rosa: These two continue their battle across all sports. Santa Rosa (13-4) is on a 4-game win streak heading into the contest, 4-0 in April. Texico (11-1) is perfect against New Mexico teams and haven't lost since their second game of the season. Both can put runs on the board but Texico has put about 13 per game in their last four. Santa Rosa will need to limit the Wolverines getting hot around the 3rd inning along with starting hot and staying hot on the bats.
